Hi, I don't understand why everyone is complaining about the Prius. This review is no excveption! I just got my 5:th Prius (Now the Plug in version (Called PRIME in US) and I LOVE IT as the previous. They are nice looking (the first two versions vere not looking so good), really comfortable to drive, outstanding reliability (600 000 km (4 vehicles) with NO PROBLEM!!, NOT ONE!). It handles pretty well and is efficient to drive. My last Prius (Generation 4 (I don't know what is is called in the US)) took me 150 000 km with an average fuel consumption of 4.5 l/100 km and this is in a country with really cold winters with 4-5 months of snow. Note: This is not a sports car. Don't compare it to them.... It is a fantastic allround car for you and your familys everyday needs with gread fuel economy. (I believe the plugin will save me even a LOT more. My first 600 km has used around half a liter of fuel, just to take me the last km's of my jerneys when the trafic has been bad. Nils in Sweden
The review is way too whiney in my opinion. People buy a Prius for the mpg's, and my Prius Prime, over its first 21K miles, has a running average of 90 mpg. That's about double what a regular Prius would give. Also, the Prius Prime looks better than a regular Prius. Toyota put a Lexus front end on it, and the car just looks way better than a standard Prius. The Prius Prime is easily the best car I have ever owned.
I agree. If we could harness the energy in American whining, we'd never run out of power. I have 12k on my Prime and I've gotten 182 mpg so far. Pretty clear the guy in the video doesn't know even what mpg-e refers to either.
Totally agree, this guy doesn't know how yo operate the prime. Had mine for months now and the fuel gauge hasn't moved a sliver! Looks great and even bought 18 inch rims and didnt lose an mpg-e. It looks far better than the standard prius and I'm laughing at the Teslas I see because I have the huge range of the gas motor that's basically my reserve. With a second cable at work and my setup at home, charging is a cinch! This reviewer is probably bias towards other manufacturers....sorry but Toyota is king. It's why they are #1 and have high quality products.
I've been against Priuses for most of my life and just got the 2019 prime, because it looks better than all the Priuses I've seen up till now! The mpg is amazing😏 love this car!
@@alphasrgnt With more than 38,000 miles on mine, and being retired and not able to do long trips due to COVID-19, my running average for all those miles is now @ 96.5 mpg. I love my Prius Prime.
Sorry, I would never buy one mostly because it's just ugly and there is no fun "driving experience" Toyota has built some beautiful cars. They could have done a better job !
@JustAGentleman yup exactly, for anyone who liked Prius the looks didn't matter - hybrid drive train and fuel economy were what that mattered. It's like - giving us the power to save FUEL as you drive. And I gotta sau it's gets you to become narcissitically over conscious , having guilt over extra 1mpg you did today over yesterday. And I'm pretty sure for those who hated it also the looks didn't matter. It's the Driving Experience that made them hate the car. There is no thrill. Also the cars computers constantly trying to win over you for fuel economy.
I have a 2012 Prius that I think looks much better than this one. At least from this video it has some weird angles that (to me) look quite ugly. I love my Prius and am thinking of getting the new AWD one. I drive a LOT each week and live in a snowy area. As for the map function he disses, I would too. The Nav function on my car is horrible and after a few very frustrating attempts, gave up on it and never use it.
i bought one of these cars 3 months ago.I travel less than 30 miles a day, most days, and plug in-most days. I started with a full tank of petrol 3 months ago, have driven 1300 miles so far, used half of the that tank so far.thats economy.
You can turn off everything he complained about. Plus only the top of the line plug in have many of those features. You don't have to look at the screen while driving either. The map also is much better than a cell phone stuck in your vents. Comparing it to a much more expensive Volvo is cute. All those widgets can be easily taken off the screen also. I drive 26 miles to work purely on electric and plug in at work. Then purely on electric back home. My 2017 gets atleast 29 miles on purely electric. Also those are about 10 highway miles. If you just drove in city it probably would go 35 miles pure electric. The gas engine also recharges the battery.
The prius was always a car with no practical compromises (compared to corolla), that brought people fantastic fuel economy and reliability, while being more practical than a sedan. Things that make a prius a include the ability to use it "normally", the 5 seats and spare tire, the hatchback cargo room etc. The thing I like about the prime is how it gets slightly better hybrid mpg than the standard prius meaning that anyone can buy it, regardless of whether you have access to charging at this moment, which would be important to apartment dwellers. The prime still holds the title of top 5 most efficient gas cars and top 5 most efficient EVs - simultaneously - which offers its owners a wealth of flexibility. Above 100 miles between charging, the prime's total energy use is less than the gen 2 chevy volt. below 25 miles, the prime gets more mpge than the chevy volt. However the vanishing of the center seat does feel like a betrayal of the prius design, which every model prior from gen 1-gen 3, C to V, has had 5 seats. Still, anyone who can live with a prius c, doesn't need the small size, doesn't need 5 seats, doesn't need spare tires and can afford a prime is better off with the prime. Even "upgrading" from a prius C requires SO MANY QUALIFIERS, it really makes the Prime different from every other prius. Obviously the prime is not a bad car and plenty of new owners are using it without issue, but it is my personal opinion that the prius plug-in is more of a prius than the prius prime.
Than the basic Prius? Probably "close"? I imagine around town the C would be a little bit more efficient? Now, a Prime, is a different story. Those can be totally electric for 25 or more miles. I do hear the C can be on EV mode for a few miles under 25 MPH. That would be handy for me on really rainy days with high winds taking kids to school instead of biking. @@anthonyc1883
@@djkenny1202 Yes, just the regular Prius vs. the C. The stats from Toyota are 54/50 for the regular Prius, but only 48/43 for the Prius C. I've noticed this since the C was released.

Kinda feels like my old 92' Chevy Lumina ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Only gripe are the constant notifications from the cruise radar ...yes I know there's a car in front of me! FFS, I turned you on with intent!!
The crazy thing about this car is you can run the engine and charge up to 80% of the ev battery. So you can use ev in the starting area of your commute where most cars would get low mpg, hop on the highway and charge the battery back up and then put it back in EV and drive when the backed up traffic is reached. Alternatively if you’re driving just a little out of the EV battery range it will kick into the hybrid battery and keep going electric only if you have it in ev mode. That makes the range closer to 40 miles without using the engine. Then when you plug it in the charger will charge both batteries. The only time we have used the engine since buying one last Monday was driving out of the dealer because the battery wasn’t charged.
Holy Smokes, an actual objective review of the Prius Prime. You pointed out all of the issues I had with it when I test drove it. I really liked the car, but the design seems half-ass in areas like the trunk space and infotainment.
FastLikeUNO give it time. If not the Prius then other Toyota models will full electric with in less than 5 years. I’m hoping it will be the Prius. I’m biased since I own one and love it.
i'd have to agree. i have a 2017 Prius Prime Premium and also a 2014 Prius Hybrid and the 2014 is easier to drive. If i could get the plugin on the 2014 without a waste of trunk space it would be the perfect vehicle.
I just traded in my 2014 plug-in, for a 2022 prime. Boot space was much better on the 2014 but that's about it. The prime is much stronger/faster in EV mode, electric range more than double, it stays in EV, in PWR mode even when floored. I have the small screen, with physical buttons on the side and got rid of beeps by using OBD transmitter, Carista. I much prefer the 2022 over the 2014, it's suits us better, as most driving is city short trips.
I’m still not decided on which hybrid I want, but this review kicked the Prime down a couple notches. I care more about it being a better car than a better Prius. I don’t want it to be heavier, slower, with one less seat and a smaller trunk just to be able to do electric only driving. But going from 55mpg average to 80-90mpg average is nothing to laugh at.
They put the 5th seat back in for the 2020 prime :) I bought one and I’m happy with it. I get 100 mpg sometimes, so 54mpg starts to look laughable. Test drive one and see for yourself :)
The electric to gas conversion price is $2.50 per gallon so right now it is cheaper to run on gas all of the time, but gas may go up. The reason to buy this car is the 54 mpg. It is a great car that holds it resale value. the bass model it is the best. The $4,500 tax credit is great . The new models are coming out soon and may be better or they may discount the 2018.
Prius Prime also uses charge mode to recharge the traction battery to 80% in 30 minutes. Holding the EV/HV button for 3 seconds will force the charge mode to use engine power to top up the traction battery.
Oh so funny. I have a prius and know exactly what you mean! Beep. Beep beep. God God, let me drive thank you very much. But it does do what it should do, great fuel economy and as green as it can be. After 224000 kms only one repair. (small coolant valve) Thanks for this great review.
Great review! Love my Prius 2019 Advanced but the beeps and the nagging song that it plays upon turning off and on. I've turned the songs off, and am now researching how to turn the backup beep off. So annoying! Great review!!!
Dude...look into the camera. Always seem to be looking just to the left or below the camera, but not at it. Watching the video is like having a conversation with someone that won't look you in the eyes...
@naxT890 no it isn't. After 4 yrs my '13 gen 1 Volt gets over 40 EV miles per charge in summer and a minimum of 25 EV miles in winter. The prime will get better mpg in hybrid mode. But my Volt rarely has to use gas mode since I live and work in the same town. Lifetime average is currently 95mpg and climbing as the weather gets warmer and that is below average for a Volt. For the last 2 weeks I'm over 1,000 mpg having only used .20 gallons of liquid cancer. It's much easier to stay in EV mode in the Volt especially if you get a gen 2.
Biggest things that would drive me nuts: (1) All that touchscreen but no Android Auto even in 2019 model (I don't care about Apple CarPlay), (2) stuck with an obstruction in the middle of the back seat so you can't lay across it & (3) wishing it had more EV range (I'd even give up some trunk space for more battery). If I was going to get one, that massive touchscreen seems like a detractor that would push me towards the base model with the small screen that at least has some people hacking to add Android Auto
You no I just watched your video on the Prius prime and I have to tell you I love my 2018 Prius prime with the exception of the 25ev miles, I think the could have dont much better there. But I never here anybody talking about charging the Prius as you drive if you no what I mean, holding that middle button in for 3 seconds then you will see the change lite come on, its never talk about, but I would like to here your answer on that.
Very moronic review of an excellent car. Hey dude if you want a Prius with a little more room in the rear, buy the non-prime Prius which is still available! And its got tons of room in the rear and with the back seat folded down.
Question? I own the 3rd generation Prius and was curious about a plug in hybrid. Why would you need to plug it in if it's a hybrid? Doesnt the battery charge when you drive it??
The Prius Prime got a much bigger battery which allows it to go 25 miles on electric only. You can force charge the battery while driving, but that just uses up gas and is not very efficient. It’s much better to charge up the battery at home.
Why doesn't Toyota just do like they did with the Rav4? For a limited time Toyota Took a Tesla drive train and batter and put it in the Rav4. How about a 200+ mile range Prius Electric Vehicle?
In terms of fuel economy, its more efficient under 25 miles between charging, and more efficient above 100 miles between charging. Its also probably more reliable, however the volt has a 5th seat and is a better car in terms of being fun, and the volt also does not have a significant speed difference between hybrid and ev mode, unlike the prime that will take 15 seconds to get to 60mph in ev mode while it takes 10 seconds in hybrid mode.
Me too... and I had converted from a born to the heart Ford gal to Toyota starting with the Prius .... bought a Gen 2 Prius which has over 225,000 miles and still going!!!... but I'm think of heading over to the Volt now.... I cannot stand the look of the new Prius nor the loss of room side to side and in the back seat as well as the smaller storage bay...
naxT890 definitely better! We have won the volt gets 50 miles on a charge but on its Hybrid engine it gets 43 MPG and the Prius gets 54 the Prius can go 620 miles on a tank of gas the volt is approximately 130 miles per tank less
I don't need the big screen. Too distracting. I'm old school and like knobs and buttons. I also really hate the ugly black Lexus like grille. I'd have to take that to a paint shop and matched to the rest of the car!
Anyone considering this car should stop themselves and buy a loaded up Prius C instead. Then enjoy the extra ten thousand dollars saved. We've had a Prius C for five years now. It's been flawless and we love it. You forgot to mention how ugly this Prius generation is.
Tom Reid Umm, that's not how all modern AWD systems work. My 2011 Volvo S60 T6 AWD can use dissimilar tires (though the older generation does have issues with different tires) The Prius AWD the front axel isn't even connected to the back. Just a tiny electric motor. I don't think that system has issues with different tires on different wheels at all.
I hate they cars are moving towards so much screen garbage. We already have ppl on their phones we dont need people messing with a confusing display just to turn their music to the next song! The interface itself is keeping me away from this car even if the MPG is so alluring
LOL... I'm thinking he doesn't like this new Prius much.... I don't like this new design at all... so this sort of goes along with my first thoughts about WTH did they change up a good thing??? It wasn't broke, why'd you mess with it?!?!?!
Not sure why they couldn't copy Tesla's battery location and size ... why the hell that battery is huge ... my battery charge gives me 34.5 some times ...not 25
I just got an LE Prius Prime. No beeping, no big screen, easy to use interface and cheaper. I'm loving it.

I think Toyota tried to copy Tesla with that centre piece. Shame it didnt work out for them

It not copy I mean Tesla and Toyota was partner, so Toyota learned Tesla technology
The Prius Prime plus has a more normal center screen with physical hard buttons for climate control. Also about $2500 cheaper than the Premium model.

It's much easier to stay in EV mode in the Volt especially if you get a gen 2.
they should put this front end on the Reg pruis. so much better
thanks for the review. love the nanny comment!
Antuan went like - Beep you beeping Cnet!
IT JUST LOOKS WAY BETTER THAN A NORMAL PRIUS
I don’t like this review.
I remember you from the Android Atlas podcast!
Awesome review, thanks for being true...👍🏽💪🏽👌🏽
Biggest things that would drive me nuts: (1) All that touchscreen but no Android Auto even in 2019 model (I don't care about Apple CarPlay), (2) stuck with an obstruction in the middle of the back seat so you can't lay across it & (3) wishing it had more EV range (I'd even give up some trunk space for more battery). If I was going to get one, that massive touchscreen seems like a detractor that would push me towards the base model with the small screen that at least has some people hacking to add Android Auto
Less cost because government rebates heck yeaaaa
Does anybody no what the tax credit is for a 2017 Prius prime or the 2018 Prius prime
credit is for a new vehicle, not used. federal is $4500. you may be eligible for other state rebates. see toyota's website
Wow, that wheel and tyre combo looks like the cheapest possible set of discount-store hubcaps on steel wheels and used tyres from a wrecking yard...
You no I just watched your video on the Prius prime and I have to tell you I love my 2018 Prius prime with the exception of the 25ev miles, I think the could have dont much better there. But I never here anybody talking about charging the Prius as you drive if you no what I mean, holding that middle button in for 3 seconds then you will see the change lite come on, its never talk about, but I would like to here your answer on that.
apparently Antuan listens to the rooster teeth podcast 4:00 he must be a man of culture
where is cooley
good review. Great speaker. clear.
25 Miles on Battery ? Terrible way behind in the Range Department
This Prius Prime looks better than the standard Prius. But that's also like saying, "I'd rather be on fire than have chlamydia."
hahaha i think you should review the next prius
RtDK Or, "Pick up the turd on the clean end."
Very moronic review of an excellent car. Hey dude if you want a Prius with a little more room in the rear, buy the non-prime Prius which is still available! And its got tons of room in the rear and with the back seat folded down.
This or Volt?
When you find out Toyota has better Prius across the country..makes you wonder why we don't have awd for 2016 Prius
I'm 1 minute in and all I can think is "get a volt instead".
Good review
So why didn't they just redesign the car from the ground up. Just laziness and penny pinching I guess.
Auto park that curb rashes its own wheels is a major FAIL!
There will always be room for improvement with technology. But at least we have the option.
A cheese wedge with a mission.
I would actually buy one if it had a 5th seat
The 2020 models do now.
Why doesn't Toyota just do like they did with the Rav4? For a limited time Toyota Took a Tesla drive train and batter and put it in the Rav4. How about a 200+ mile range Prius Electric Vehicle?
Is this better than the Chevy Volt ?
In terms of fuel economy, its more efficient under 25 miles between charging, and more efficient above 100 miles between charging.
Its also probably more reliable, however the volt has a 5th seat and is a better car in terms of being fun, and the volt also does not have a significant speed difference between hybrid and ev mode, unlike the prime that will take 15 seconds to get to 60mph in ev mode while it takes 10 seconds in hybrid mode.
Ahh cool. I just like how the Volt looks better. And you also have more space in the boot.
Me too... and I had converted from a born to the heart Ford gal to Toyota starting with the Prius .... bought a Gen 2 Prius which has over 225,000 miles and still going!!!... but I'm think of heading over to the Volt now....
I love my 2011 Prius. I agree with the reviewer about the big touch screen. Yuck. Not a fan of this new dash at all.
I can't commit to a car that needs 30 bumper stickers and drives 10 under the speed limit
if you want something that needs negative bumper stickers and doesn't bother following speed limits at all, buy a paypal model $.
Lower speed, fewer deaths. Period.
No navigation system in Prius AWD!
Tom Reid Umm, that's not how all modern AWD systems work. My 2011 Volvo S60 T6 AWD can use dissimilar tires (though the older generation does have issues with different tires)
The Prius AWD the front axel isn't even connected to the back.
I use the ghetto privacy shield. Plastic bags with laundry falling out.
Not sure why they couldn't copy Tesla's battery location and size ... why the hell that battery is huge ... my battery charge gives me 34.5 some times ...not 25
Because Tesla’s have 310 miles of range. This has 25. Its not a full EV like a Tesla, it’s a hybrid.
It looks like they didn’t want to to spend money redesigning the Prius. It’s cheaper to just keep the same design and put the battery in the trunk.
I don't think I've seen a worse looking car. Enjoyed the review though.
I see it still has the urinal on the steering wheel !
Beeeeeeeeeep
Beep, Beep, Beeeeep!!!!!
So according to this guy Toyota can’t do anything right. Got it.
It just looks, bland now.. And boring.. Prefer the 2017 Prius.
This is the perfect car for people who've lost their testicles...
Sorry about your dad.
You're nuts.
Sad, sad macho man.
Beep
How about the cost of your dignity?
Still haven't figured out a way to measure that :-/
Roadshow lol to both of those.
Welcome to the club :-/
Prius residual values are terrible. Sales are down
Fake review. You have better to review bicicles
the ugliest of all Prius Smh ...
