7 Quick & Easy Ways to Number Rows in Excel

When working with Excel, there are some small tasks that need to be done quite often. Knowing the ‘right way’ can save you a great deal of time.
One such simple (yet often needed) task is to number the rows of a dataset in Excel (also called the serial numbers in a dataset).
Now if you’re thinking that one of the ways is to simply enter these serial number manually, well - you’re right!
But that’s not the best way to do it.
Imagine having hundreds or thousands of rows for which you need to enter the row number. It would be tedious - and completely unnecessary.
There are many ways to number rows in Excel, and in this video, I am going to share 7 quick and easy ways to numbers rows in Excel.
The following methods to number rows in Excel are covered:

THANK YOU! I've been looking for an answer to my issue for 3.5 years. I have one special note: I'm numbering a ROSTER that has the party's LAST NAME in Column B and FIRST NAME in Column C. In a number of instances, there are two members of that party but we do NOT repeat the LAST NAME in Column B for aesthetic reason. By inserting a "space" in Column B, the system "thinks" there is text there and assigns a number for the 2nd member of that family. THANK YOU so much as I've been manually numbering for years.

Thank you. But in Subtotal when you filtered greater than 50, at the bottom of the tabulation it selected less than 50 valued rows too. How do we avoid it? That is where I am stuck and I noticed it is there for you too.

You can 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 using fill handle. Enter 1.1 in one cell adn 1.2 in cell below, then select both the cells and drag the fill handle down. 1a, 1b, 1c is tricky as fill handle doesn't recognize alphabets the same way
