Hi Jared, Just finished watching this whole video. Since I've been using an R7 since early August, I have a few notes on it. I don't know why you didn't mention the Depth Of Field Preview button inside the Manual/Auto Focus Switch, but this is a valuable hold-over from film SLRs that I've been using until today, when I discovered, while following along with your video, that the viewfinder can be set to not only simulate exposure but also always show the depth of field. That should be the default. Unlike you, I like to use Touch and Drag for the focus point location - using the right-hand side of the screen set to "relative" (not absolute) position - I find that using my thumb on the screen while looking through the viewfinder gives me much finer control than using the joystick, while also avoiding the risk of accidentally changing the dial around the joystick. I use the AF On button to do servo spot focus and the * button to do Eye tracking - if I used a half-press of the shutter button to focus I couldn't easily choose between the two modes. . Like you, I live in Manual mode for exposure. However, I don't do a lot of manual focusing so I've set the Control Ring on the lens to simulate the aperture ring on a film camera's lens. In the menu I set that ring to Control, not Focus (and definitely not Off). If I need to manually focus with a lens that doesn't have a separate focusing ring, I can always use the Manual/Auto Focus switch to set the control ring to do manual focus. Continuing my nostalgia for the film SLR I used for nearly 40 years, I set the shutter speed on the top deck of the camera with the Main Dial, and for the third leg of the exposure triangle I set the ISO with the dial around the joystick. (Ok, I couldn't set ISO on my film camera at all except by changing the film, so that's a plus for digital.) Living in Manual mode and shooting RAW, I keep the histogram in my viewfinder on so I can expose to the right ("ETTR"). (More informative than a simple single pointer.) Since the histogram display is based on the JPEG picture style, I use a low contrast picture style to make it behave more like the RAW file I'm actually shooting Why isn't ETTR a standard auto exposure option? I might actually *use* Auto exposure if it were.
I tried to watch this video when I first got my R7, and my brain went tilt. I went and used the camera and talked to people. I made a ton of mistakes. 9 months later I watch this video again, and it makes so much more sense. Thanks!
For being the bad boy of photography, you did an awesome job on this Jared. You didn't give the true beginners grief, but you did delve pretty deep into the features. Great job pilgrim.
Perfect EXACTLY what I needed, was setting up my new R7. Canon user manual was only a few pages unlike my previous Canon that was thick as a phone book. While addressing each setting seemed tedious at first it was needed, found myself stopping video to explore the new options. I've been following The Fro for a number of years found him it be informative and entertaining at the same time. Thanks..game time now have to go Eagles vs 49ers.
I have been using my R7 since July. Took it on safari to South Africa. This is a great video even after having it a few months. Learned some new things. Thanks!
Man, I got my R7 in the mail yesterday, and it's the first camera I've had in probably 10 years. This video is coming in so clutch right now haha. Thanks for putting the work into this one!
23:45 dont turn off lens corrections if you´re shooting jpg, even modern lenses depend on in camera lens correction. As he said: in jpg everything you do in camera is baked in into the jpg. He´s turning all of it off, because he´s shooting raw and does the lens corrections in post. But for beginners, turn them on. Edit: The R7 has focusing problems with shooting at H+ in low contrast situations.
The reverse display works only when you turn the screen forward. When it is on the display screen is shown mirrored which helps composing. The image or video is still stored normally. With strobe lights one should turn the exposure simulation off or the viewfinder will be dark.
Thank you Jared. Yes it is a long video but one of the best ones out there to take me through the entire menu! I learned so much on my new R7 from this video before I even started to use it. It did help me take better photos of wildlife and portrait photos so far. I also saved this video so I can access the table of contents to help me out when I get stumped on settings or where to find it by your great color code idea of Red, Magenta Blue and so on. This was perfect for beginners like me!!
Always get so much out of your videos. Just bought a R7 and already onto my third new lens. Lots to learn. Just trying to home in on those fine detailed shots.
I'm very new at digital recording. Had a blast with the old film cameras. Thank you Jared for simplifying the introduction tutorial. Using 50mm ef lense now. Waiting for arrival of my 18 to 150mm next week so I can get back in the groove. Will keep refining my familiarity with your tutorial until then. Loving this Canon R7 already and I haven't gotten started yet.😊
Thank you for the great tutorial Jared. I bought my R7 in early August (upgraded from a 2008 Canon 7D). I hadn’t cracked the manual yet and knew I was missing out on things, but was I ever. This past weekend I shot my daughter’s last horse barrel racing event and was shooting RAW and M and getting way better results than the previous event I shot a month ago. I’ll be buying the FroPack 1-3 Bundle tonight since that tutorial was worth more than $90 to me. FYI: I had some issues trying to buy via my iPad/iPhone the other day via PayPal. I had no problem logging into the PayPal app from those devices, so it seemed to be an issue from your system to theirs - would hang in the step of may second factor authentication. With Canon’s pretty nice RF lens sale I’m switching over to just RF lenses and for budget (F4 vs F2.8) I went with the L glass of 15-35, 24-105, 70-200, plus the 50mm 1.8 and the 100-400mm that were also heavily discounted.
October 21st 2023, I just got this Camera today and It is overwhelming to begin with haha. So many options but All I need to know is Juggling the Exposure triangle.
I like that you have this video, as I was able to follow it back and reset up camera settings. I do like how you approch setup.. I go from sports to plane to landscape to street using the cust. setup C1,C2, an C3.. both in shooting an video, really nice to have the ablity to just shift gears so to speak. While not really a major feature in this video, one aspect that many goss over.
Jared, man, thank you for a very clear tutorial...much more enjoyable than Acrobatting through 900+ pages of tech writing. I own the EOS R7 and EOS RP and will look to see if you have a similar guide for the RP. Thanks dude!
Hello Jared, I just purchased this camera yesterday, I have experience with canon cameras, however your in depth video helped in many things like I didn’t know that there is a wheel around the joystick for extra control which is used to control the aperture. I got with it an R to EF adapter while using the canon ef 24-105 f4L IS1, the one that comes with the 5D mark 3. Ay 43:45 in your video, you explain about the focus guide. I cannot see the focus meter on the screen like you do when demonstrating it. It’s possible that I cannot see it because I’m using an adapter & ef lens instead of an RF or RF-S like you are using in this video? Thanks
Sorry Jarred, but in your video, were more options than in my Canon R7. Is it possible that there is another menu that I did not see? On my [camera icon] menu, I only have options
Interesting, what is wild to me is honestly this is probably a terrible camera for someone's first camera if new to photography, not because it's bad but because it's not designed for them. It's clearly designed for semi-pro to pro use. I'm super excited about it and these are great to know things as someone moving up to this camera but I'm shocked when people recommend this or the R5 or R6 as people's first camera. I'll give canon credit for knowing how overwhelming this is though and giving simplified options for people. It would be awesome to see this whole guide again more from a pro standpoint. Also, I'm as a wildlife and landscape photographer, back button focus sure saves me a lot of time from accidentally touching the focus when I don't want to but to each their own. Appreciate this none the less.
I have to disagree - this is a great camera for someone new to photography because it does everything for them. Now if they want to learn more about what aperature means, how to use manual mode, why people back button focusing (it is not just to focus)? Then this may not be a good starting camera since it could promote complacency, but people are going to learn if they want to whether they buy this or a used T7i.
I've been having focus problems with my R7 recently. After looking for solutions I see a few people saying Canon has done warranty replacement of some components to fix it.
Manual threshold for minumum shutter speed when using (custom ranged) auto ISO is the best thing on a camera and you do not explain it 🙂. It is such a great tool. AV mode + limited auto ISO range + this setting = GOLD!
He seems to explain only his way of doing things. That's OK, but that's the reason I soon stopped watching. There are better tutorials which are critical to some options but at least explain them. So not a camera tutorial but to his way of doing photos.
This video is extremely helpful and informative! Excellent ! Recently I bought a Canon R7, I have a question, hopefully will get an answer . Menu -- AF page 1 AF operation, my camera always locks at MF, no option for AF SERVO. I tried to reset camera a few times but still when I turn to page 1 of AF, there is no other option except MF in a blue bracket. How can I change to Af servo ? Thanks for a reply. Ray
Dear Jarid, i have the R7. what i miss is the pop-up flash. One i stud in a little bit dark tunnel and i am used to use in that situations tu use the pop-up flash. Now i had to use the build-up flach. how can i make a good picture without the poo-up flash or the build up flash? thank you.
HI love this video really helped me set up camera. I cant get the video function to work- message " video SD card cannot be used to indentified to record on multicards ". I have 2 SDs and not sure why I cant video. Tried choosing 1 SD on video but still same message ( is it too small an SD)
Hey, Jared! Thank you for being so generous with your time and expertise. This total newbie greatly appreciates you! Quick question. Somewhere along the way in this tutorial, you show how to format the SD card. Is there any difference between formatting via the camera or via a stand-alone computer like a desktop, laptop, tablet, etc.? On the desktop, there are more options (which, of course, adds to this newbie's confusion). Does the camera already know which of these options is best, therefore, formatting on the camera is the best way to format the card? Or, does it lack these options, thus, formatting on a computer is superior? I'm referring to options like File System, Allocation Unit Size, Quick Format, etc. Thanks!
I have been told..and have made it a habit..to format on my PC and then again IN CAMERA...because sometimes get an error message card not formatted by the camera . Double protect that the card is clean and ready to go
Thank you for this great video, Just got my R7 and I am following the setup process you are going through, but in the image stabilization menu, there is only the Digital IS option. I updated the firmware to its newest version, and yet... Please advise. Thanks again.
Thankyou so much Jared! Sadly this video doesn't help me with the menu. Somehow mine isn't as extended. It only goes to 5 icons and for example, in the red menu there are only 6 numbers... I have this amazing manual macro lens but can't take any pictures cus the option 'release shutter without lens' isn't in the menu... What can I do to get the full menu??
I am not sure why but the menu on my new R7 is different than the menu in the video. Perhaps someone can comment on why that might be? I tried repeating the video to seee if i missed something but no, mine is different and i know i purchased the USA model.
This is so strange. I have the same camera bought 1 month ago canon eos r7 and when in selecting video menu RED I can only select between 50 P and 25P in terms of fps for all format videos except the 100fps slow camera. Any help?
Once I get past Jared's delivery his videos are really good. One thing I'm surprised he doesn't talk about is the kit lenses and that they are all polycarbonate (aka plastic) - even the lens mount. Not cool with that.
anyone else have this issue? when i plug in an external microphone.. the camera disables the audio noise reduction option (attenuator)? Ive been using external mics and the attenuator option for years on the 60d, 70d, 80d 90d. but the R7 wont allow it?
Looking forward to test the R7 next week at Photopia in Hamburg. That sadly is the only alternative to Photokina now. I hope Photokina will return one day.
The big knock on the R7's electronic shutter is that shooting at 30 frames per second can yield rolling shutter effects on moving subjects, while the mechanical shutter, being limited to 15 fps, doesn't do that. So set the electronic shutter to 15 fps! No rolling shutter and no shutter vibration - for sharper low light shots and silent shooting. The camera will last longer, too. (Since I don't shoot sports, I set my electronic shutter burst rate to 3 fps.) But I'm glad there's still a mechanical shutter in the camera so I can use the "close the shutter when the camera is switched off" function to protect the sensor while changing lenses.
There is rolling shutter at 15fps electronic, but you are right....much, much less. I've been shooting thousands of flying birds at 15fps electronic and getting only a few here and there with noticable rolling shutter. The other complaint you hear is about the buffer not being big enough (though it's twice the size of the buffer on the well loved 7dii). Again, in a camera at this price point, consider the 30fps advertising hype. 15fps is still blazing fast, and I have been catching amazing action without once hitting the buffer; and I'm not even using the fastest cards.
I noticed how you seemed to dismiss the RAW Burst mode. Shame that, because hidden within there is the 0.5 sec pre-shooting facility that not everyone credits the R7 for having.
Hi, kind of curious why you would shoot in srgb... isn't adobe rgb the larger colour space?? or does it really even make any difference? great video though, really thinking about getting this camera or the r8 and your videos are being very helpful. Have a good one :)
Shooting Clog does not take that much time. My preset works on almost everything I shoot and it takes a second to apply it to all my clips. If you're not going to use Clog, you might as well shoot jpeg.
Hello Jared, I don't have the kit lens but I have a rf 24mm and rf 85mm, in IS mode setting, only have 1 option is "Digital IS", there is no "IS mode" option. Is that option only come with the zoom lens? Can you help? Many thanks
Even tho I will never own this camera, Im going to watch this all
Same haha

Thank you Jared! I just got this camera and would have been lost without this video. Appreciate that you do this work!
Jared, you do a great job with these. Your D5600 user guide helped me so much in 2018 to get started on my photography journey.
The most informative video for a new camera owner!! Thank you sooooo much!!
Thank you for these!! I just purchased this camera after months of lusting over it and now I’m ready to watch this 💕

Hello Jared, I just purchased this camera yesterday, I have experience with canon cameras, however your in depth video helped in many things like I didn’t know that there is a wheel around the joystick for extra control which is used to control the aperture. Thankyou very much Jared, this has been a huge help.
Excellent, Jared. Good info, delivered at a nice pace.

Once I get past Jared's delivery his videos are really good. One thing I'm surprised he doesn't talk about is the kit lenses and that they are all polycarbonate (aka plastic) - even the lens mount. Not cool with that.
Letss goo my r7 recently ship, soo this is perfect timing
Love those videos so much, I just hope you had one for the old 5D MK IV.
Just to bring the best of her..
anyone else have this issue? when i plug in an external microphone.. the camera disables the audio noise reduction option (attenuator)? Ive been using external mics and the attenuator option for years on the 60d, 70d, 80d 90d. but the R7 wont allow it?
I take aviation photographs and I just can't get any with the R7 all of them blurred everything I've tryed every setting but still no luck.
I have the Canon 90D. Why does the R7 have so many more settings??
Thank you so much! Might be long for a video but not for a new user!
How do you setup to take a picture of the moon with R7?
Looking forward to test the R7 next week at Photopia in Hamburg. That sadly is the only alternative to Photokina now. I hope Photokina will return one day.
The big knock on the R7's electronic shutter is that shooting at 30 frames per second can yield rolling shutter effects on moving subjects, while the mechanical shutter, being limited to 15 fps, doesn't do that. So set the electronic shutter to 15 fps! No rolling shutter and no shutter vibration - for sharper low light shots and silent shooting. The camera will last longer, too. (Since I don't shoot sports, I set my electronic shutter burst rate to 3 fps.)
But I'm glad there's still a mechanical shutter in the camera so I can use the "close the shutter when the camera is switched off" function to protect the sensor while changing lenses.
Shame that, because hidden within there is the 0.5 sec pre-shooting facility that not everyone credits the R7 for having.
might be purchasing the R7 moving up from M50 .. can't afford R5 ,,, You suggest the R7 ?
Hi, kind of curious why you would shoot in srgb... isn't adobe rgb the larger colour space?? or does it really even make any difference? great video though, really thinking about getting this camera or the r8 and your videos are being very helpful. Have a good one :)
Thank you for going through this camera but what lenses do you recommend?! 😅
Its my starting with my canon r7
Can you do a 45 minute Mentorship using Linux OS & Darktable ?
Jared, great vids! Canon R7 HDMI clean output. Is there a way to disable "Record Indicator" when in video mode?
Shooting Clog does not take that much time. My preset works on almost everything I shoot and it takes a second to apply it to all my clips. If you're not going to use Clog, you might as well shoot jpeg.
Hello Jared, I don't have the kit lens but I have a rf 24mm and rf 85mm, in IS mode setting, only have 1 option is "Digital IS", there is no "IS mode" option. Is that option only come with the zoom lens? Can you help? Many thanks
What do you prefer? R8 or R7 😊?
Sony a6700 user guide next 😊
