This is such a breath of fresh air! I have watched Jared's R7 tutorial and I thought to myself... what possibly could Tony teach that Jared did not and you literally wrote a book about a book. Every single thing you talk about from a completely different angle in which jungle of settings suddenly make all the sense in the world. Thank you so very much for taking time to share this tutorial.
I used to watch your channel religiously years ago when I began photography. I’ve since moved on to videography. My friend is a photographer and does it as a hobby. When I started a photography business, he invited me to do events with him while I was getting experience. I always had the idea that I would become the best and highest paid photographer in my area, but I didn’t realize, until my friend and I finished an event, put a couple drinks down and began talking about our frustrations. He was very disrespectful to me in front of people but he apologized when I brought it up. But then he told me that his frustration was that I was turning his hobby into a business. I understood. We agreed to be respectful in the future and to also keep in mind that for him, it will always be a hobby. I have a degree in business so naturally everything I’m involved in, I’m trying to make money. I’ve done very well since then as a videographer. He still does photography as a hobby. We’re still friends!
I still watched this despite knowing all these settings. I love the way Canon keep the same menu formats and colour schemes from very early cameras right through to the R7 and I’m sure beyond.
After many long months debating which Canon camera I should purchase as an upgrade to my old but trusty Canon Rebel SL1, I decided on the EOS R7. Thanks for the excellent review Tony! I know I made the right decision 😊
Thanks so much for this essential tutorial! Nothing like seeing what you're talking about to thoroughly understand the settings. Appreciating the professional and clear example animations.
Thanks Tony for this awesome video. I upgraded from my ancient Canon 80D to the R7. Really big jump and so many features, glad you are breaking it down. 🤓🙏
Wow! I sat through this entire video in one sitting. Very well paced, explained and broken down. Thank you so much for taking the time to go through all of this! Liked, subbed and can’t wait for more updates from you! I’m very thankful I came across your channel!
I appreciate this video SO much - I'm only 25 minutes in but it already seems so helpful. The whole ISO/aperature settings are very overwhelming to me so hearing you say 'if you shoot in auto thats totally ok!' just until I can watch tons of videos and really get into moving out of auto mode. So glad I found this!

This is the best turorial for the R7, I have watched many over here in the UK. I bought recently and Couldn't get on with it, but this has opened my eyes to the potential of the camera, and therefore i am excited to go out and use it. Drawback currently is i have EF 24-70 usm L & EF 70 -200 usm is L lenses, with a converter they are big and heavy, maybe time to trade in ..... As always thank you for another splendid tutorial 🙏🏻. I got my R7 yesterday from the pre order in early June.......upgrade from my beloved 7D, he may rest now😇
Hey, Tony! Thank you for being so generous with your time and expertise. This total newbie greatly appreciates you! Quick question. At 6 minutes and 14 seconds, you show how to format the SD card. Is there any difference between formatting via the camera or via a stand-alone computer like a desktop, laptop, tablet, etc.? On the desktop, there are more options (which, of course, adds to this newbie's confusion). Does the camera already know which of these options is best, therefore formatting on the camera is the best way to format the card? Or, does it lack these options, thus, formatting on a computer is superior? I'm referring to options like File System, Allocation Unit Size, Quick Format, etc. Thanks!
"Ok, let's do this one last time" (to paraphrase "Spiderman Into the Spider-Verse"): 1) You can avoid having to clean your sensor all the time if you simply turn off the R7's power switch before taking off the lens, since switching it off closes the mechanical shutter, covering and protecting the sensor. 2) Using the Fv mode takes many more steps than simply using the ISO button behind the shutter button to use the main dial to set the ISO. That effectively gives you the third dial everyone has been pining for. 3) Anyone still on the waiting list for a body-only R7 should just call their dealer and change their order to include the kit lens. That's what I did on August 2nd after waiting since May 24th for the body and seeing that even Canon's own web store had only the kit, not the "body only" version. So I called B&H to change my order and they shipped the kit to me the same day. (It appears that Canon has been creating almost no "body only" boxes - they want to move the kit with the lens.) When I got the R7 I idly snapped a picture at 150mm wide open at a1/40 second of a page in the Real Book (the premier jazz fakebook) open on my piano 30 feet away. It took up only the bottom left corner of the screen - one quarter of the screen vertically and one sixth of the screen horizontally - but enlarged on playback it was perfectly sharp, though it was taken handheld at 1/40th of a second. And it was not in the center of the lens but its extreme edge! So my EF-S 18-135 IS nano-USM has become my video lens, since I bought the power zoom attachment on eBay recently when I saw that it's discontinued. The much smaller and lighter - but just as sharp - RF-S 18-150 is my new walk-around lens. 4) Under the AF setup menus, you can turn on "Touch and Drag" to use your thumb on the rear screen (while you look through the viewfinder) to position your focus point much more easily and accurately than with the joystick. Just set it to use the right-hand half of the screen for that, and to use Relative, not Absolute, positioning. This feature came in with the M50 and all the R bodies can do this! I use the "spot" focus point for back button focusing with the AF On button, and I assign eye detect to the asterisk button for my second kind of back button focusing.
As someone that got to use his fathers Canon FD (film) mount camera as a young teenager, I actually find the "basic zone" way more complex than the "creative zone", 12-13 scenes vs. controlling just two simple parameters aka. aperture and shutter speed (changing ISO while shooting is witchcraft, just as ISO>400 is crazy fast... yes I love the future)
Great vids Tony! Very helpful for my new R7. Is there a way to disable "Record Indicator" in video mode so you can have a true clean HDMI output? Mahalo! -Terry
Just bought the R7 yesterday and just starting this video but on the camera tab the menu only goes from 1-6. Is this because of an updated firmware? (I have 1.30) I did find the Shutter Release Without Card so I guess I'll have to search a little bit more for some settings. Can't wait for the 6 hour video from you.
Thank you so much for this video ............ I just bought an R7 , and am just getting to know it .......... your video is an invaluable source of instruction and will continue to be so .......... Tony Worcester UK
Based on excellent reviews such as yours, I bought one! I used to be a Nikon DSLR and ML shooter, but Canon blows the Z's out of the water and Canon has affordable long telephoto lenses. The R7 is an absolute steal at this price point. A strong weather sealed body, 32Mp's, a flagship R3 AF system that is unbelievable etc! I wasted too much time on Nikon. Nikon caters to the wealthier clients which explains why they haven't produced an affordable long reach zoom for the sports or wildlife shooters. If you want a longer reach, Nikon only has $2500 plus lenses available. Inexcusable Nikon. Go Canon!
Hi, what the best recommendation of settings for large group photos? I fact, this is an indoor and night setting event. Feedback is greatly appreciated.
👍 I found this video very helpful. I'm considering moving from my 7D Mark II to the R7. I have been very happy with my Canon 100-400 f4-5.6 L lens for bird photography and my 17-55 f2.8 as well. I'm wondering how well you think how well the autofocus works on the R7 with the adapter.
Another great video, thanks Tony. When the sensor shutter in my R7 slides back, the sensor mechanism swings into place very forcefully, shaking slightly. This is my first Canon mirrorless: is it supposed to work that way? I can't find a ref to it anywhere. Apologies if I missed it in your tutorial. Any info gratefully received. Thanks.
One thing to note here, you don't need two fast SD cards, on my test one V60 and a regular V30 for the backups work just fine. There's no noticable speed difference in terms of clearing the buffer. You might as well get one fast and one slow sd card for your backups.
I did take to heart your plea to order the Photography book from your site instead of Amazon. Not only is it $24.99 versus $13.36 on Amazon, but $44.10 to ship! Sorry, but I did purchase it from Amazon.
Nothing about focus bracketing? Tisk tisk, lol. Thanks for the great video about my new R7. As always, you guys put out the best videos for a newcomer learning the craft. I consistently come away with something new to think about, practice, or apply. Thanks!
It seems to have a heavy focus toward a beginner audience. I'm no professional and not the most experienced in terms of how much I use my cameras, but I just couldn't make it all the way through the video. Tutorials about particular cameras can be useful in helping to decide whether to purchase them, besides being a reference after purchase (Roberto Valenzuela's multi-part series on the R5/R6 menus, for example, was particularly good).
You couldn't make it all the way through a video lasting a bit more than an hour? And yet you post a comment advertising some other video tutorial for different cameras?why in the hell would you do sometging like that? 3 rhetorical questions.
Thanks very much for your tutorial. I get my camera tomorrow so wanted to get a preview how to use the R 7. It was very informative. I have been shooting wildlife for years on a 40 D then 70 D and have some good lenses to use for my R 7. Can`t wait to use the eye focus on deer and birds.
Absolutely amazing video, subscribed!! A question: why does Canon 7D have black or white bars if shutter speed is below 1250 when shooting with studio strobes (Alien bees, 3 separate ones)? I know shutter is delayed when using studio flash lights with a DSLR but 1250 seems way too high, can't seem to find answers online. Trying to help a friend who owns the camera and is a total beginner. Thanks in advance!!
I'm not disputing you, I just need to clarify something. In electronic shutter mode, if it takes 1/40 of a second to scan the sensor top to bottom, how can you shoot high shutter speeds? It would seem that, in electric shutter mode, 1/40 of a second would be the max shutter speed. Does the camera scan the sensor differently in electronic first frame and mechanical shutter mode? Thanks
If you use the Canon app on your Android or iPhone device, you will get notified of firmware updates also. I just got one for mine today. It was released in May of this year, I just got the camera 2 days ago.
Does the camera sensor move along the Y axis, up & down? I'm asking because I'd like to know if camera image stabilization would help with the up & down camera motion that comes with walking video shooting. Thanks
I tried following the tutorial and it looks like you are in another version of the firmware. What version is demo-ed here? My R7 came this week at 1.0.1 and I grabbed that latest update 1.1.0. The highest sub-menu number I saw in either version is 6. There is no 7. Could not find the setting for not shooting without memory. Love your work. It is hard to keep these up to date with latest firmware.
Thanks! Now if I could only get my hands on the camera I ordered from B&H in early June. Still waiting :(. At least I'll know how to set it up whenever it arrives sometime this year (I hope).
Call B&H and change your order to include 15-150. That's what I did a week or so ago when I saw it in stock at Canon only with the lens. B&H shipped the kit to me the same day. The dirty secret is that Canon is shipping far fewer boxes that don't include the lens. Turns out the 15-150 is a very nice lens. I'll reserve my EF-S 18-135 nano-USM for when I need the power zoom attachment for a video.
So what would be the point of using the electronic shutter for basically anything and not just constantly have it on mechanical? Seems the 30fps feature is relatively useless due to not being able to use it for things going fast. As if you can only use it on stills etc, why would you need to have 30fps for that? Or is it more to do with the fact it's silent and good for quiet setting? Is that basically the only advantage and when you would use it? Amazing tutorial tho, I'm getting through it bit by bit and clicking to the bits I'm curious about and just got through the rolling shutter section 😊
I don't remove the cards from the camera, I connect my camera to my computer via USB cable. I have found that the memory card slot themselves tend to be fragile. I had one break and it had to be repaired some years ago. Since I don't remove the cards, I don't have to stash extra cards all over the place. I also put cards back in right away if I ever remove them. Thanks for the video.
Recent discovery - you *can* have three control dials active at once in the R7's Manual mode to control aperture, shutter speed and ISO simultaneously with the histogram live all the time. Here's how: This setup relies on using the control ring on the lens as the third control dial, so on lenses like the R7's kit lens that use the control ring for focusing, you sacrifice manual focusing, but with lenses that have separate focus and control rings there's no sacrifice. That's any EF or EF-S lens with the EF to R Control Ring adapter, and any RF lens with both focus and control rings - like my Canon RF 100-400mm lens. The only lenses this is a problem with are the two RF-S kit lenses, since three-quarters of the RF lenses have both rings, and the other quarter have a switch on the lens to toggle between using the ring for focus or control. To set this up, go to page 6 of the AF tab in the settings screen and set the Focus/Control ring to Control rather than the default Focus setting. Then go to page 3 of the Camera tab and in Customize Dials you set the three dials up however you like. Since I used a pre-EOS Canon FT-QL for nearly forty years before going digital, and thus I'm used to having an aperture ring on the lens, I set the Control ring on the lens to AV. Since I'm used to setting the shutter speed on the top of the camera, I set the Main Dial to TV, and I put ISO control on the Quick Control Ring around the joystick next to the viewfinder. (Film cameras changed the ISO by changing the film you were using!) But you can assign those three functions between those three dials however you like. PS If you frequently want to focus manually with an RF-S lens that has only one ring, you can set one of your Custom Settings up to use the Control Ring on the lens for focusing and use the other two control dials however you prefer.
Thank you for this amazing tutorial, Tony! I am brand new to this technology, I had a SLR back in the day but haven't picked up a real camera in a long time. I have a question: Regarding the copyright issue and how to find the option on "Wrench 6," I only show three options on Wrench 6: battery, manual/software, and Firmware. Not sure what to do about it, perhaps there is a software update? I'll check it out, but curious if you had any ideas. Thanks again for the great education.
I just got my Canon R7 camera and 800mm lens, When I look through the viewfinder the image is unfocused and it says in a box, "Set The lens to the shooting position" What does that mean? Please someone help me.
Hi, i recently bought the canon r7. When i used it manualy and change the setting my preview image doesnt correspond to those settings leaving me in oblivion about the correct settings for that light in photography. There is any button that i have to turn on so my camera can act like you showed in 20:28 min demonstration in the video. Thank you so much
I have the new version (1.4.0) of the canon R7 and it's a bit different from this tutorial... I have a question and can't find the answer! Do you know how to avoid the back screen from dimming every 10 seconds? I'M really tired of that. I'd like to have it on for at least 1 minute especially when I do videos. Thanks! I like your videos very much by the way! 😃
I think you could back off the knee jerk 'turn off the beep' position, and dive into the Wrench icon menu 3 Volume section where you can turn down everything except the shutter volume, and set that to 1 (0-5). I have found this helps me know when I took a shot, when I inadvertently had it on high speed and accidentally took 4, and almost no one else around me can hear it. Otherwise, a solid performance. I got several take-away suggestions, and have been researching this body since I got it in late July. Especially nice was the idea of leaving myself a not on the back of the body. Reading my own note to turn Location ON for wireless connection would have saved me from a few rounds of frustration. Also that Flash requires Mechanical Shutter, glad my 3rd party flashes work with this body. The notes on Raw Burst and needing to turn on Pre Shooting will save me from similar frustrating loss of opportunity. I do wish there was some available data on the Focus Bracketing, as my experiments have yielded sorry results. General ideas of what the camera sees as the extent of the depth of field, preferring RAW images, and how chops that down to size, based on the Focus Increment would let me get my macro shots all the way in focus, without having to go through this much trial-and-error. So far, mostly error. I do appreciate your and your efforts. Now that your SDP price has come down I don't need to buy them used to send to friends. Hope to see you sometime, once the West Seattle Bridge gets fixed. Keep up the good work.
Hi. Thanks for rhe video. Are you sure that the Godox V 860 II c or the Godox X-pro c works correctly on the hot shoe of the R7? Don't need the shoe AE-D1?
One thing I was disappointed about this camera in comparison to my R6 was that there wasn't a 3rd dial. Then from watching this I found out about FV Mode. I love this camera even more now thanks to Tony. Cheers
I use the main dial to set the f/stop (I'm coming from the era long ago when the f/stop was set on the lens), I use the rear dial (around the joystick) as the the shutter speed dial, and I tap the ISO button to set the ISO with the main dial when needed. This is many fewer steps than using FV mode - and I run in Manual, with the small histogram on screen. I don't like to have a backseat driver grabbing the wheel when it comes to exposure. (I'd set the f/stop on the lens by defining the control ring as "Av" but that blocks using it for manual focus.)
@@philiprolenick4475 Ive tried something similar but main as shutter and rear dial as AV and ISO button as you have, but you lose the histogram when changing ISO. Thats why I stopped that way. i do like seeing the histogram move while changing settings. To be honest the FV mode is a little slow for wildlife bird photography and not completely happy with this. Thats why I prefer the R6 setup.
Sorry Tony, but I've been using that app since I've been using my 80D and it works. Yes it's not perfect. You can only connect to one device, so if connect it to my phone and I wanted to use it with my tablet I'd have to set it up all over again. Also if you are some one that has your phone to lock after a few minutes it will disconnect, so just stop your device from locking or sleeping. BUT THIS APP WORKS. Hope you don't delete my comment.
It's about time they fix all the bugs and give us a better app. Ability to download raw files instead of jpeg, ability to stay connected after the phone screen locks and better hardware in the cameras going forward, that would produce a better and more stable signal.
My menu is definitely different requiring some extensive searching for menu items being discussed. It seems like with HDR PQ enabled for HEIF, then Raw Burst Mode cannot be adjusted or set. Also, I cant find copywrite anywhere, maybe they removed it, I dont know.
After adjusting the dials so that in the "M" mode they work the same as in the "Av" mode, to have the aperture under the index finger and the shutter speed under the thumb - during exposure bracketing (AEB) in manual mode (M), the camera takes subsequent photos by changing the aperture value instead of exposure time value, which causes the depth of field to change in subsequent photos. In this case, all the photos are useless and there is nothing you can do with them. What should I do to make the camera change the exposure time and not the aperture value during exposure bracketing in manual mode, so as to have different exposures with the same depth of field? I would like to mention that this problem does not occur in another Canon camera that I have, so it is probably a software error.
Great explanation. One question, which is the best prog to watch a dng file, (so far I used picasa viewer, but it cannot open the dng converted from cr3. Thank you.
Love this tutorial on the settings, however I do use the Canon app and really like it but I do not do bluetooth file transfer not even on windows as it is sooo slooow. The app is very cool as I can control the camera via my phone when doing tripod macro.
Thanks for the video , hon3stly I use the canon app constantly ill shoot photos and then connect right away to my phone and transfer photos without any problems its been 100 percent every single time I use it 99 percent of the time it's crazy you and others are having such an issue with it. Unless I need to transfer like a bunch of photos I'll plug the card into my co.puter but most the time I shoot photos connect to canon and 5hen use lr to edit then upload or send photos to ppl in like 2 minutes . But amazing video I got alot from it I just got my r7 yesterday before this camera I had and still have my m50mark2 love that camera with the right lenses but needed more and the r7 hit so many check marks for me.
Great review, thank you! I recently bought the R7 and I noticed that there is a continuous buzzing/blowing/humming sound. Not loud but certanly noticeable. Is that normal? Does anyone else have that too? (I have preview AF and IS off)
Hi Tony, I am using canon R7 and I want my photonames start with IMG_ and videos start with VI_ HOWEVER what I try in "yellow menu 1" and saving it to C1 photo or video . . . . is doesn't work. I always keep my last setting . . . . Any ideas on this ???

R7 is my first mirrorless. Was lost when I purchased it. I truly appreciate your tutorial. Will be ordering some of you other books soon.
Thanks for a great tutorial. By far the best R7 tutorial on here. Thanks Tony !!!
Thank you Tony, being following you guys for years. Just bought an R7, so SO helpful. Transferred from dslr, great tutorial 👌😁🎄
Thanks, just got this as my first mirrorless after upgrading from an 80d. Your tutorial was great for starting with it out of the box.
I just shared this tutorial with my cousin who just purchased the R7. Your tutorials are the absolute best! Thanks a million🤩

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge freely. It speaks a lot to your passion for the craft and wanting to help everyone grow. 🙏🏿 🙏🏿 🙏🏿
Thanks for this excellent video. Is the rolling shutter still an issue if you use Electronic 1st-curtain drive mode?
Thank you very much for taking the time to put this video out. I can not tell you how helpful it is to my wife and I.

Jeez Tony, you are so good at this. I switched to R7 from 7D mk11 and I have a lot to learn and this is so useful.

beautiful video, now I know a lot of things I can do with my camera that I didn´t know before, God Bless
Well done! Very concise. I feel confident I can take my new R7 out and get some good shots right now!
Very helpful, thank you. I was looking for some input on the R7 metering modes here but did not find. Any advice on where to find?
Thank you so much for this video ............ I just bought an R7 , and am just getting to know it .......... your video is an invaluable source of instruction and will continue to be so .......... Tony Worcester UK
Glad to help!
Go Canon!
Thanks! This is super helpful for R8 setup too. Almost identical layout, minus joystick and ISO button etc
Nice Video Tony! So much Great Content here on your Channel
Hi, what the best recommendation of settings for large group photos? I fact, this is an indoor and night setting event. Feedback is greatly appreciated.
Canon EOS R7 or Fujifilm X-S20. Can you help me to make a right choice please
Hi Marty, same here. Have the 7D but am considering the R7.
Hello! Please write, is the Godox Ving V350C TTL flash for Canon suitable for my Canon EOS R7 camera?
hey im not tony, im just a random German guy... i use this exact flash on my R8 and r7
@@germanpoweractivated Thank You!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nothing about focus bracketing? Tisk tisk, lol. Thanks for the great video about my new R7. As always, you guys put out the best videos for a newcomer learning the craft. I consistently come away with something new to think about, practice, or apply. Thanks!
Great tutorial! - I would have recommended the RF 70-200 f/4 instead of the 2.8 since I think it's a much better value and won't break the bank.
??? @@zekethedego
Thanks Tony - I am learning a lot from you.
Glad to hear it!
Great tutorial. Thanks Tony. It is now on my bookmarks.
Love my R7! Compliments my R6 perfectly. Thanks Tony!
Don't you want to swap both cameras for one R5?
@@antontoss5280 No, but I will add a R5C next. The R6 low noise for video out performs the R5 and for Real Estate I need low noise.
Just picked up R7 overwhelming compared to t6i your videos are great your suggestions pc laptop tablet for work load thank you
Synchronicity? I will be purchasing an R7 in the next few days. This video thus arrives with perfect timing. Thanks, T&C!
Michael The Maven's 2-part tutorial on the R7 has been up for over a month.
I have the same problem
I found it on page 2
Thanks! Now if I could only get my hands on the camera I ordered from B&H in early June. Still waiting :(. At least I'll know how to set it up whenever it arrives sometime this year (I hope).
Try Milford Photo! You might have to call them.
@@philiprolenick4475 Too funny! I did that and the camera arrives on Tuesday. Thanks for suggesting!
@@TonyAndChelsea Thanks! I actually upgraded my order to include the lens and it shipped immediately.
Thanks Tony. Would you please give us a tutorial on the Sony a7 IV..
Very informative and helpful video. Thank you.
Thanks a million for this video!
Is there a cable that can be used to charge the battery directly?
Great knowledge and info, thanks!
Here's how:
This setup relies on using the control ring on the lens as the third control dial, so on lenses like the R7's kit lens that use the control ring for focusing, you sacrifice manual focusing, but with lenses that have separate focus and control rings there's no sacrifice.
(Film cameras changed the ISO by changing the film you were using!)
But you can assign those three functions between those three dials however you like.
PS If you frequently want to focus manually with an RF-S lens that has only one ring, you can set one of your Custom Settings up to use the Control Ring on the lens for focusing and use the other two control dials however you prefer.
Great tutorial - thanks for doing this!
Great fun video. I watched all the way thru.
Ok, so after much hand-wringing I changed the mode from auto to Fv and voila! there were all the various options in the menu. Learned something new.

I just got my Canon R7 camera and 800mm lens, When I look through the viewfinder the image is unfocused and it says in a box, "Set The lens to the shooting position"
What does that mean?
Probably under wrench/ option 3/ power saving / screen dimmer
Thanks! I'll check that asap! 😀

@@JT_1 Thanks a lot. It's exactly there! Now I fixed my "problem". Have a nice one! 😁

Sweet detailed tutorial, thanks a bunch!
@@tonynicolaci3244 You can use the lens' control ring as a 3rd dial, but you can't use it for manual focusing if you do.
Nice one as I’ve just ordered a R7 for the crop factor to pair with the old EF500mmf4L is.
Then use the R6 for landscapes and astrophotography
Sony a7iv or canon R7?? For wildlife photography. I love canons AF but Sony has better glass options any advice?
I'd take the a7IV. The bird AF is great.
Glad it works for you!
It's about time they fix all the bugs and give us a better app. Ability to download raw files instead of jpeg, ability to stay connected after the phone screen locks and better hardware in the cameras going forward, that would produce a better and more stable signal.
Is there a way I can get the histogram in the live view ? Like when I am gonna take a picture?
Yessa thanks been waiting for this one
I shoot mostly sports. I want to get an R3 but it's sooooo expensive. How would an R7 work as a substitute?
