Something I really like about this boss battle, other than the fact that it is fanservice, is after the boss does their desperate attack, Thordan absolutely loses it. He's running at you swinging his sword like a novice instead of his regal fighting style from earlier. He's not even focused on the tank anymore. Thordan is the only boss in the game who became terrified of the Warrior of Light on the last 10% of his health.
I know this was before that particular fight was out, but that's a little touch I loved about the Nidhogg fight as well. In his final phase after you survived his onslaught in the form of Estinien and even the tiniest bit of control he still had gives way to blind rage and desperation he uses Akh Morn to finish you off. It hits, you survive, and he just spams it 5 times in a row, desperately hoping you die.
And when you really think about it, in the eyes of these antagonists, what is the warrior of light? An individual chosen on a crusade for justice? The one who holds the power to wrought ruin to the wicked? Condemning evil into an eternal prison through unwavering conviction? Did Garland really did anything bad besides kidnapping Princess Sara, he was a knight of the kingdom, and yet because of WoL, he was banished into the future and past alike and took upon an eternal and immortal creature known as Chaos. Obviously, in this context, the warrior of light would seem evil, but no individual should have that kind of commanding power either for good nor evil.
And then ShB comes around, then the reason why Thordan's so terrified of you is that he saw that you were an actual Ascian all along and that he probably thought you were there to avenge Lahabrea lmao.
Despite Thordan's Knights being called the Twelve, it didn't click in my mind until they all started swarming and performing their attacks one by one. Then it hit me. THEY MADE KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND A PRIMAL BATTLE! As someone who started with FF7, I shed a tear at the end of Thordan's ultimate attack.
I love how, after you survive his ultimate attack, he resorts to those clumsy, awkward sword flails. This was a powerful moment for me--in a game were we routinely fight gods and demons, backing the most powerful foe we've faced into a corner, making him panic and attack in desperation was exciting.
I completely agree. He blindly mistook the power of a primal to be equal to that of a god and thought himself unstoppable. When in reality he's little more than a man in cosplay swinging around a big stick :3
Slotha Sil To be fair, it isn't exactly an intelligent move to challenge the guy/gal who routinely slaughters primals with the power of a primal. I mean, my reaction was "Really? My job is to KILL primals, and is a job I do very well. Do you really expect to beat me on MY grounds?"
lenlimbo His reasoning was that the literal thousands of years of prayer from probably hundreds of thousands of people, along with the power of the Right Eye of Nidhogg and the strength of the Heaven's Ward would be enough to defeat you. Keep in mind that until this point, lorewise we've only ever fought Primals on a 1v1 basis and required serious technological aid in the case of Leviathan and Bismarck. But this - this was on a whole different scale. That the Warrior of Light has grown so powerful, that they could best 13 primals backed by Nidhogg's Eye and so much prayer on their own.
I love the moment Thordan just goes nuts like a desperate maniac after realizing that his strongest attack barely hurt you. Storytelling... outside of cutscenes... in an MMO. Fuck, FF14 is so damn good.
I know! That was totally me! Haurchefant was so kind and caring and a true ally and friend in a really dark scary and confusing time for us at that point in the game, and when he was taken I was PISSED >:( Gave me all the fuel to light my fire to kick Thordan and his Knights' asses!

I love how both Thordan and Nidhogg battles include variations of Dragonsong in their theme. Thordan's has the "chorus of man" which makes it sound more heroic, triumphant, and holy. The dravanian horde's version is more Gregorian, wrathful and ancient sounding. Makes sense because both Thordan and Nidhogg are powered by the same source of aether, eyes of a wyrm. Also shows that both sides of thr war are corrupt and blinded, and ties in the theme of an eye for an eye.
+Edgar Buenfil That's pretty much all there is to the story mode version. Sure, there are some other mechanics going on, but the punishments are so minor that you can pretty much just ignore them and just tank n' spank
The first thing I thought when I saw the Heavens' Ward turning into Primals, was "Oh god we're gonna fight Knights of the Round". I was not mistaken. That was an utmost epic ending.
I felt goosebumps during the whole fight. The effects and atmosphere felt like a spectacle, and the OST building up at each phase, until the end. I love it so much!
When I first did this fight, it was with a friend of mine, a Scholar. I was a BLM. We were both unsynced to avoid queue times, but both lvl 60 (the proper level for the fight anyway). It was one hell of a battle. We got about 50% of the way first try, then we both died. The Echo boosted our power, and we formulated a basic strategy, then revelled in the absolute fucking marvel that is this fight. It was **so** challenging, and SO fucking satisfying to get to the next stage. I could actually feel my heart pounding and my adrenaline building as we got closer to about 30% of his health, then he went into his desperate ultimate attack phase and we thought it was all over. We survived through amazing synergy, teamwork and co-ordination: abusing the everliving fuck out of manashift, manaward and galvanize, Eos on max healing and the scholar just constantly healing me as I tanked as a BLM. Without all the randoms there to mess up mechanics or spoil the experience, this was by far the best experience I've had with the game since I got it. We almost screamed when we finally defeated him: the scholar had died on the very last leg of the mile, I was on my last slivers of HP and the boss was flailing his sword about hopelessly. We traded, and I nearly died (1k out of 20k total HP) but I out-DPS'd him. After it was over, we both had to sit down calmly for a few minutes while the adrenaline wore off and our hearts stopped beating like mad. There was such obvious satisfaction. The whole fight was just extremely epic. The awesome music, the theme and tone of the boss, the story behind it and everything leading up to it. It was stunning, and I really hope there's more content like this coming with Shadowbringers - but with Okabe and Yoko Taro on the team, I know it's going to be an abolutely legendary experience with music that rends the heartstrings asunder. I still listen to Wretched Weaponry a year or two after completing Automata and it still makes me yearn for more, sometimes it makes me cry. No other game has wrought such raw emotion from me and that's why this fight alone is why I've cemented Square Enix as my favourite videogame producer, ever. Final Fantasy 14 is just amazing. I was expecting throwbacks esp for this expansion but for Square to pull off one of the most well known summons and turn it into a boss fight, use the same designs while retaining the aesthetics we've come to love AND incorporate the boss's Ultiimate in the same manner. Ah, yes, the loyal knight - most pivotal in your initial relations with Ishgard. The knight who always had your back. The knight who... You let die for no fucking reason at all. Just stood there and watched that beam take ages to tear through his shield. Frozen, wondering if it was going to kill him. If only you had had a quest objective to save him, you might have done so. But alas, the slave of light literally only ever does what he has a quest to do - anything outside the quest objectives, and his only reaction is to sit there like a gawking idiot. At the end of 2.0, I thought the warrior of light's greatest weakness was rope. You know, the whole strength to beat primals yet somehow a length of rope and the brass blades proved too much. But the death of Hauchefaunt showed the reality: if there's no quest for it, he can't do it.
@@Valarauko19 no, just that healers can’t undo death. In a fight, the player is unconscious, we just say they’re dead because it’s shorter and means the same thing gameplay-wise.
Endwalker Spoilers: . . . We are the sundered Azem; not just an Ascian but a member of the Convocation empowered by the Mothercrystal AND the Blessing of Light. Perhaps in Thordan's final moments, he glimpsed at the color of our soul.
My favorite aspect of this fight is how it felt like the whole expansion, the fights and all you've done up to this one, was training for you this fight's mechanics. Good stuff.
I lost my mind at the 7:31 part my first time through. FC buddy and I were going ballistic in teamspeak. Have to hand it to SE, they know how to make one hell of a final boss.
orrthehunter "Knights of the Round to be a Primal" um knights of the round was a summon in ff7, so why wouldnt it be primals? Ifrit, ramuh, titan, shiva, garuda? All summons turned primals in ffxiv.
nathan madden It is because SE never hinted KotR to be a Primal in FF14 nor mentioned there was going to be a 3rd Primal. All they did was said that there will be 2 new Primals with 1 being a exclusive to FF14 being Ravana and other being Bismark.
+orrthehunter Considering how related to the story it was, I wouldn't be surprised if holding it back was intentional. Although, I'm stumped so many of us didn't read the whole "King Thordan and His Knights Twelve" thing deep enough to realize that, oi, Yoshida's bringing back another FF7 thing. I mean, think about it for a sec - Before Meteor's Final Boss was technically Judge Sephiroth (shame they didn't use the Dragon Forme in 1.0, but I can kinda see why), ARR's Final Boss was FF7 Ultima Weapon, and HW's Final Boss was FF7's Knights of the Round. Really makes me wonder what else they'll pull from FF7 as the updates go by.
Y'know, looking at Thordan fight, I notice a lot of his animations are repurposed from Dark Knight job actions, with his model being roughly based on the one they used for Phlegethon/Acheron (difference being that those two hold their sword outward, like a Paladin would, whereas Thordan holds his inward, similar to how Dark Knights do). For example, Dragon's Eye uses the same animation as Darkside, but is an AoE stun. The animation for Ancient Quake uses the Unleash animation, but has longer reach and is Earth-aspected. And Dragon's Blood uses the Shadowskin animation, but is simply the stance he enters to enable use of Dragon's Eye. Something tells me that these bosses might actually work on a system similar to player characters - maybe one day we'll get a mode or something to play as Primals (or simulacrums of them, rather).
I'm a new player in 2024 and got to this fight. Sadly it was 5am in the morning so I could not get a party. I decided to go solo unsynced and it was amazing!!!.
It fucking blew my mind that this fight combined the mechanics of nearly every primal, raid, and boss fight into one. However, I felt it was too early for a fight like this to exist.
***** I agree. The fight was holy shit awesome, but it was a shame that I beat it on my first try. It was definitely Bahamut-level material, if not even more epic. If nothing else, it'd be cool to see an extreme level version of Thordan to compensate - Normally I figure they wouldn't do this with main scenario bosses, but they made Ultima HM, so why not Thordan EX? :c
TheMattimeas Maybe they'll do a similar thing to what they did with Ultima Weapon and coils, with that ballad guy in Mor Dhona. This fight would be even more epic with an extreme mode.
***** It's a good fight, really ,but the way the really designed it is all show and no real damage. You would have to try to actually wipe on this fight. Maybe later on they'll do the same. Because if majority of these spells did any kind of damage, you could not duty finder this at all.
Such an epic feel to the battle...and yes, quite beautiful to behold. I do hope they consider making a harder version of this fight. I can just imagine!
What I like about the Heavensward themes is... each theme goes with the area. Churning Mist(Soft version), The Aery(Full version) or Sea of Clouds(Soft version), Neverreap(Full version). A better example would be Ishgard(Heavensward Theme), The Vault(Heavensward theme played on an Organ). What's interesting about the Vault's theme is... every time you go to a different floor or section, the take a key out from the organ. I hope I didn't confuse anyone? LOL!
Insta-like! I love this theme, and this fight too! I've dreamed of a fight against these for some time now, and to have it actually happen, dream come true. My favourite fight ever! I really hope there's going to be an extreme version of this fight.
Absolutely freaking *love* the chanting in the refrain, reminds me of Nobuo's best works (mad props to Soken and his team) and when I'm just not feeling it (XIV will never be as good as XI was in my eyes) little things like this remind me why I still like XIV.
I really hope they make a The Singularity Reactor (Hard) like they did with Ultima in 2.1. I'd love a more challenging version of this fight, since it's so damned epic.
God I loved this fight. And at the end when you withstand his best attack like it's nothing. "Damnable fool! I've *destroyed* your kind a dozen times over!! A thousand years past your wretched deceitful kin started this war. And here is where it will all end! Let us finish this rotten business, here and now, once and for all. For Haurchefant, Ishgard...for Eorzea!!"
Sydonai11 It's also a great end game boss because it revisits a ton of mechanics from A Realm Reborn.. as if it was all leading up to this... Also, I feel like it would lose it's epic feel if you wiped over and over learning how to do the fight.
THIS THEME IS BANGING! Damn, makes me want to head back into eorzea and complete the main scenario quest to maybe then play heavensward just to get here.
Man I will never forget the moment this shit started and I heard it for the first time in game. Shit is too epic. This and T13. Just that opera at the beginning. "KREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" I was like o_o o shit this is boutta be epic
I love this fight so much. Not too many mechanics just a good old fashioned epic brawl. Wasn't expecting them to throw in all of the Knights of the Round, considering throughout the story you only saw like 4 of them. My first thoughts when I noticed "They didn't..." They did. You had to have played FF7 to get the full reference but I think a lot of people really appreciate this fight Now if only Duty Roulette would give me this for Trials instead of the FUCKING CHRYSALIS EVERY TIME, I would be so happy
This fight alone made me feel the same way I felt playing final fantasy 6 in 1993... For that moment I felt like I was fighting... Kefka all over again... Basically .. Even though it was a ff7 reference for me this fight was woke my FF spirit up
The history of dragons in Eorzia is fucking sad. Always dragged into these earth shattering wars over power and control. Scores of them enslaved and imprisoned to suffer for eternity. The scope of the abuse and torment they've suffered at the hands of the Allagans as revealed in the coils of Bahamut is just heart wrenching. I have the Twintania mount and I cant even use it. Just the very nature of the neuralink device around her neck is too grusome for me to bare.

Oh but the things that sets up for the future, I am VERY much looking forward to what 5.3 set up about the WoL's... heritage.
Yeah that was epic. It made me realize how truly terrifying the WoL's limitless power can be.
Endwalker Spoilers:

We are the sundered Azem; not just an Ascian but a member of the Convocation empowered by the Mothercrystal AND the Blessing of Light. Perhaps in Thordan's final moments, he glimpsed at the color of our soul.
My favorite aspect of this fight is how it felt like the whole expansion, the fights and all you've done up to this one, was training for you this fight's mechanics. Good stuff.
This is the best boss fight ever in my gaming experience
Thanks for upload this man
And thanks to you Square Enix !!
I lost my mind at the 7:31 part my first time through. FC buddy and I were going ballistic in teamspeak. Have to hand it to SE, they know how to make one hell of a final boss.
Remember that you can right click on the screen and select "loop" if you want more of this, people. =)
+Frostare Good man.
Stupid iPad not offering the option to loop... Ah well. 9 minutes is enough for me :)
+Steven Khan i downloaded it
right click if you use a right handed mouse like 90% of the people (I'm left handed but I use the mouse with the right)
+Edos512 Oops, fixed that. Thanks!
The Title should be Knights of the Round.
I seriously did not expect the Knights of the Round to be a Primal Fight in this game.
orrthehunter Let's hope it is incoming in a future patch XD
orrthehunter "Knights of the Round to be a Primal" um knights of the round was a summon in ff7, so why wouldnt it be primals?
AshramAstarcia don't forget about the gold saucer
Amazing track, definitely has that "final boss" feel to it.
If you've ever did Hallowed Ground or Living Dead and that 10 more seconds granted your team enough time to finish the boss. Your the real mvp.
The extreme mode of this is going to be sick.
*reaction to King Thordan after fight*
"YOU BROUGHT THIS ON YOURSELF, TRAITOR!"
This fight and theme kicked me in the face, it blew my mind.
SE did an amazing job with Heavensward.
I'm a new player in 2024 and got to this fight. Sadly it was 5am in the morning so I could not get a party. I decided to go solo unsynced and it was amazing!!!.
He has 12 powerful knights and, instead of releasing all of them from the start, he releases them in pairs only. What a silly king.
At least he was smarter than Organization XIII in Kingdom Hearts and sent 2 instead of 1.
@@DeviltoGeorgia34 hahahahah thats tru

Common stalling strategy. Build up your power for an ultimate attack, buying time.
This is my favorite song and fight in the entire game so far. Absolutely love this.
I didn't realize the first knight that cast that room ride AOE that we can never seem to kill is Zephirin! I promised I get his heart...
It fucking blew my mind that this fight combined the mechanics of nearly every primal, raid, and boss fight into one. However, I felt it was too early for a fight like this to exist.
***** well it made one heck of a grand final battle to the 3rd Arc of FF14 storyline.
***** I can honestly see this becoming one of the most highly requested trials to get an EX mode
***** It's a good fight, really ,but the way the really designed it is all show and no real damage. You would have to try to actually wipe on this fight. Maybe later on they'll do the same. Because if majority of these spells did any kind of damage, you could not duty finder this at all.
Dare I say "almost as good as "One Winged Angel" without getting MURDERED??? LOVE the theme...
One of my favorite soundtrack and battle so far!
This fight made the grind worth it, the first time you do this battle, its level of epic is well over 9000!! The music... THE MUSIC!!!
Totally makes me remember of the Kingdom Hearts songs.
And its epic.
Woulda been hilarious if Thordan said "Have at you!!" at the end like the black knight when he was flailing his sword around like in national lampoon.
I just fucking love how many fights in this game go with the music
Such an epic feel to the battle...and yes, quite beautiful to behold. I do hope they consider making a harder version of this fight. I can just imagine!
The beginning... oooooh the beginning! It's so amazing that it excites me like CRAZY for the battle!
My inner FF7 Fanboy was fangasming hard this entire fight. I was nearly incapable during the summon phase.
This is the theme that gets stuck in my head all day.
LOL!
Now, this is how a final boss theme should be made. This song is incredible and it really adds to the adrenaline when you do this fight
one of the best fights with one of the best original music for the game.
Insta-like! I love this theme, and this fight too! I've dreamed of a fight against these for some time now, and to have it actually happen, dream come true. My favourite fight ever! I really hope there's going to be an extreme version of this fight.
Absolutely freaking *love* the chanting in the refrain, reminds me of Nobuo's best works (mad props to Soken and his team) and when I'm just not feeling it (XIV will never be as good as XI was in my eyes) little things like this remind me why I still like XIV.
i have to say when i first did this fight and they used LB's i sat there for a second and just thought...... did they just... limit break... us?
the music at the begining is too awesome :O
The Warrior of Light. The sword that cleaves evil!
Amazingly one of the best fight in this game! Just wish it was more challenging if they were to add extreme mode for it. But great nonetheless :)
I really hope they make a The Singularity Reactor (Hard) like they did with Ultima in 2.1. I'd love a more challenging version of this fight, since it's so damned epic.
Thordas : _"Feel my power... Feel my divine power miserable human !"_
Ultimate End !
Wow, this fight looks intense...
Photanic It isn't that bad as long as you can adapt to mechanic changes rather quickly. Still feels intense when you're fighting it though.
Photanic They did achieve for a great "Endboss" feel, it isn't actually "Hard" but it's helluva hectic and fun.
Sydonai11 It's also a great end game boss because it revisits a ton of mechanics from A Realm Reborn.. as if it was all leading up to this... Also, I feel like it would lose it's epic feel if you wiped over and over learning how to do the fight.
Jay Steiner SE have hinted at an extreme version of the fight coming up in a later update! I'm so looking forward to that!
+strifey07 They do this and I am there
The work 'majesty' comes to mind when hearing this song
Now THIS is what I call a final boss song.
"KREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"
I was like o_o o shit this is boutta be epic
In the last moments of his life he did see a glimpse of the truth. *What* are you indeed. If you haven't finished ShB then... have fun!
The music is frikkin amazing through the whole of HW
Thanks for putting a spoiler warning in your title but also having the spoiler IN the title
was waiting for this song so bad! :D epic trial
Riley Westwood the music here is incredible! Such a perfect track to go with this fight!
I really hope this guy gets an Extreme Ballad. It deserves it, imo.
I'm getting some VERY distinct Kingdom Hearts vibe from this...
Now give us a proper Minstrel's Ballad: Ultima's Bane version of this one.
I love this fight so much. Not too many mechanics just a good old fashioned epic brawl. Wasn't expecting them to throw in all of the Knights of the Round, considering throughout the story you only saw like 4 of them. My first thoughts when I noticed "They didn't..." They did. You had to have played FF7 to get the full reference but I think a lot of people really appreciate this fight
Now if only Duty Roulette would give me this for Trials instead of the FUCKING CHRYSALIS EVERY TIME, I would be so happy
I can't begin to imagine the hard mode of this fight that we're about to get..
OMG I remember when I first did this my heart was going so fast cause of the song had me jamming out
This song is majestic
THORDAN EX IN TEN DAYS BOYS
HE'S GONNA LIMIT BREAK THE SHIT OUT OF YOU
+Jonah Adkins That fight is just unholy...
+Jonathan Joestar
Nah, it's actually the Holiest of Holy. ;p
/sarcasm
cardboardsnail
Ech...
Legendary!
damn the beginning of this song gives me goosebumps
This battle was so epic... Only thing that can make it better is more epicness
peak final boss theme
The string instruments at some parts here give me a FF8 feel.
This fight alone made me feel the same way I felt playing final fantasy 6 in 1993... For that moment I felt like I was fighting... Kefka all over again... Basically .. Even though it was a ff7 reference for me this fight was woke my FF spirit up
Life... dreams... hope... Where'd they come from? And where are they headed...? These things... I'm going to destroy!
One of best music themes
nobuo uematsu is a God..... He did beastly music in ff6 and ff7 . basically all of them but I love ff6 and ff7
shinku222222 Nobuo Uematsu didn't compose this though - it's Masayoshi Soken.
This song reminds me of Bhunivelze's final boss theme from Lightning Returns
The most beautiful fight in the whole game
Currently playing D&D as my Paladin faces down a small army of corrupt paladins.....perfect background music
G-damn I love the intro to this.
Every time I get this in random trial, I smile
Good king Thordan mog, good king mog!
According to iTunes, this theme is called "Heroes"
They did good topping A Realm Reborn final fight
I wonder they will be topping Heavensward
Needs an Extreme Trial that provides a challenge as epic as the visuals.
Woods as soon as he saw Menendez: "MENENDEEEEEEEEEZ!!"
Me as soon as Zephrin took to the field: "ZEPHRIIIIIIIIN!!!!!!!!"
That giant nergasm you have when you realise they're doing the SAME FREAKING ATTACKS as FF7.... I was MTing for this fight and i died to that Holy Bladedance as well but I didn't care a single bit I was nerdgasming too hard
