Scott, have you ever seen a 4104, with the Hydro shift. It was the 4 speed with a splitter similar to a 2 speed rear, but it gave you 8 gears, and shifted pretty quick. Like driving the top end of a 13 speed.

Years ago, I had a part time job driving motor coaches for a company that did charters and tours. At the time the outfit had a number of 4106s, 4107s, or 08s and four 4905s. One of the older drivers taught me that they all shifted differently , despite the fact that they all had the same power train , common to each model . Some were slow to shift some weren't, and to never, ever miss doing a perfect H pattern when shifting . The other thing was o never try to down shift from 4th to 3rd, above 40 mph. BTW, one of those 4905s was one of the last produced , before GM quit the motorcoach business in '79 I think. I loved driving that thing. I wish I had it as a motorhome. As time went on, the company switched to Eagles and MCIs, but that's another story.

Jim it sounds like you and I worked for similar companies with similar busses 4104, 4106, 4905A and Eagle 01, 05, and 10s. Please refresh my memory when shifting the GMs into reverse I know I went from 1st to 2nd but did I have to hold the solenoid switch when I made the shit or did I push it on then push it off after I backed up. Secondly didn't GM coaches have sinks for hand washing new coaches do not carry water for hand washing. Thanks for your reply.

Back when driving a manual took finesse. I love driving manual cars but we're definitely spoiled by synchros these days.

He needs to learn to float the gears it would be much smoother that way

Educate or correct me if iam wrong. I'am assuming that the GM 4104 has the larger Detroit Diesels 8v71 ( 8 cylinder) two stroke turbo charged engines, and you have the Spicer/ Eaton 4 speed with a splitter box on the transmission?. I've seen a lot of the 4 speed transmissions but your is the first I've seen with the High/ low feature. Did you custom outfit your bus with the transmission or would that be a factory install ???.
    Thanks for sharing!
    Kind regards, Eric Dee.

Inline 671 no turbo 238 hp but usually closer to 200 hp. 4 speed spicer. No hi/lot that’s a Jake brake switch in the shifter (added)

@@BusGreaseMonkey: Thank you for your reply. 10-4 on the inline 6 (6,71) that's a good place for the Jake brake switch, fooled me, I bet the bus is a hoot to drive.
      Thanks for sharing!.

@@SteveCarras I remember my Dad who was a professional chauffeur let me do a ride along on a deadhead run on a greyhound and he was double clutching and rev matching the screaming jimmy. I don't know if it had a spicer box as I was only 8 but I know a 2 stroke diesel when I hear one. I am pretty certain it was a 4104.
