I actually bought one about a year ago, as it so happens this was one of the last Detroit jackets actually made in the USA. I go to school in Detroit and we have a large Carhartt store right near campus
I went on a hunt last year looking for a J97. Finally found a dark brown one in my size on some random website but I got it for a good price and loved it. I wear it for work and when I wear it casually I get more compliments from the ladies about the jacket than anything else I wear.

Thanks for the timely video! I bought a new one just a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t be happier with it. Hello Carl! I have watching your videos for apporox a year. Being in law enforcement there were so many junk jackets that the term "longevity" was not a term that was applicable. Hi RJ, thank you for the thoughtful comment! Have you tried the Carhartt Extremes Parka? I was honestly blown away by it’s warmth. What a piece! It might be just the thing you’re looking for.
Carl, I've attempted to locate local stores that carry it but so far none do. Unfortunately in our area winter clothing is sold out well before winter hits. Definitely want to try it on before I purchase it. Will follow through.
Just bought my first 2 pair of carheart jackets. 1detroit and one active jacket. Loved all the pants I've bought from them so I'm super excited for these jackets. Your videos (plus the research I've done) has definitely made me a fan of the company.
This jacket gives me memories when my uncle was still alive and we used to do some jobs together during the winter and we were always wearing these jackets. Good times. Id DEFINATLY rather have my mackinaw then now tho. IMO best work coat

Once again an excellent and informative review. Have to say that as a Carhartt fanboy it’s was great to hear the history of the Detroit jacket. Also like that you added some alternatives, although why you’d not just buy the Carhartt is beyond me!
I have a heavy canvas parka from China. Its extremely heavy and windproof though not waterproof. Given how poorly it moves, I seldom wear it on the go. It's my bonfire coat. Don't have to worry about embers melting plastic, but man is it heavy. Detachable liner was cool too. It came with a quilted cotton liner which made it heavier, but super comfortable. Its called the jundayi and it was what was originally used for workers and soldiers in China. Managed to get a detachable poly quilt liner from another store and its served me brilliantly. I'll use my timberland when I'm on the go, but when it's really cold, it's either the China black of the b3 bomber.
Thanks for the background and review. I just got one of these. It’s still a bit too warm to wear it, but it seems to be of high quality. Looking forward to putting it through its paces.
Nice video Carl. I have an older USA model that I love the fit. It does work well with my tool bags too since the bags sit below the bottom hem. Only thing is the zipper will have to be replaced because it is getting stuck. Check out picture in the ad where the guys are on the boat. The captain has a pipe! Nice photos
I could never afford a carhartt jacket had one when I was a kid, my old boss gave me one and I love that thing. I was at a flea market by my house and found one of these Detroit jackets from the 80s and I bought it and I love that thing too.
I have placed this on my Christmas list knowing I will pick one up if I don't get it. On a side note, I find it interesting that it is what people mean when they say "carhartt jacket" where you come from. In the rocky mountain cow country, we consider the active jacket general issue.
Haha that’s pretty cool! I was talking to a guy yesterday about how we refer to insulated bibs as “Carhartts”. Like “hey man, it’s pretty cold. I’m going to get my Carhartts out of my truck.”
I love that Tough Duck Dark brown jacket you showed towards the end of the comparisons. Ordered one straight away for home outdoor work but looks good enough to wear for casual days too. Great video
@@sl1237 it’s a good fit. I’m 6,3 and quite muscular with broad shoulders and the medium is a good fit but still big. I’ve quite slim waist tho so it fits in the shoulders and flows down a bit towards the waist. But doesn’t look “baggy”. Either way I’d size down whatever your size is. *edit: I’d also say that is has a really good quality inside and is insanely warm for the type of jacket.
I love my Detroit jacket! Got it a couple years ago for my birthday by my work colleagues and as you said Carl, it is just about the do-it-all jacket. Only other jacket I really wear is my Patagonia down sweater for those really cold days.
Great video! Love the rich history of Carhartt and the design iterations. It can be a bit confusing though, especially here in Germany: The classic Carhartt workwear is really hard to get, especially offline. Carhartt WIP with stores in every larger city is mostly overpriced in my opinion. - Making channels like yours even more valuable!
I'm a welder. One little spark on a zipper and the closure is done. For people like me the Chore Coat is the way to go. Thanks for the video. Well done
I wear this jacket for work and I love how it is above my tool belt. I don’t wear it casually because I don’t tuck in my shirt and I don’t like how that looks.
I like the old. I would rock the new one to though. I had one got it from JC Pennies. In Northland Mall off Greenfield. In Southfield MI. I’m from Detroit so it definitely hits home with this one lol. Good video bro.
Bought one at a tractor supply in north georgia for a deer trappin job and damn if it aint the best jacket i own. Took several hooves to the chest and it did great!
Hopefully I don't get a lot of flack for this... but I actually like the new jacket and the new features that they put on it I think that they took the time to look at what was working and what wasn't working... Great review as always!!!
I bought mine at a yard sale for $20 bucks that eventually fit me good when I got older. Once I actually started to love the jacket I had left it behind at work and next think I know it was long gone… I haven’t had an other cathartt that fit and looked good.
I have 2 of these that I wear as fashion pieces. One of them is the 1989 100 year anniversary jacket. It doesn't have the Carhartt badge, or an inner pocket, and the inner sleeve lining is actually blanket, not quilt. It's beautiful, though, and the different details make it feel unique/rare. My other J97 is a Moss- easily one of my all time fav jackets.
Great video, Carl! I’ve got a Carhartt in my closet that I confess I haven’t worn much through the years. I think I got it in the ‘90’s. It’s relatively short, it has the zipper, Detroit cuff, snaps under the collar, but doesn’t have an inside pocket, though. It doesn’t have any tags on it besides the “Carhartt” emblems, either.
I had one for years I bought back in the early 90s..I also had a carhartt Jean shirt Jac made just like an over sized Jean shirt and it had a blanket lining , I wore both till the elbows had holes and the cuffs were frayed I even had a guy sew patches in the elbows..I was eventually deployed to Afghanistan got divorced after bouncing between Afghanistan and Iraq in the Army and as a civilian contractor and along with everything else fell into that black hole void where stuff disappears..I really miss the old jackets and fund a store that sells imperfections from Carhartt and ordering one on Friday
Being tall and stringy I personally prefer the long hem. It does take away from "the look" and can completely understand why you might like the old one better. Keeping the old one in production as a detroit classic would be cool.
I have multiple made in usa Detroit jackets, and 1 redesigned version of the jacket. I like the boxier fit of the old models, but i also think the redesigned version is more functional and warmer.
I bought 2 last winter and both are made in the US. Now they aren't. I'm glad I have one to wear and one still in the bag. I absolutely hate that they don't make them here anymore.
The j97 was a washed duck, which came in several colors. The j001 was made with the original firm duck and only came in brown , blue, or black. It also had the blanket lining in the sleeves I think they made a mistake when they changed the Detroit jacket and the chore coat. They had two proven products and had to change them, and not for the better. They produce many other styles that have different options and could have kept their two iconic products original. I wish they would bring back a firm duck long sleeve button down.
I bought one of the detroit jackets about 8 or 9 years ago and shortly after took it up to visit my parents and help my dad do some maintenance work on their property. I accidentally left it there and now my dad wears it all the time and won't give it back! Great work jacket!
In the mid 1990’s my friend Joe who was a NYC union carpenter , local 1456 Dockbuilders (and pile driving), was walking to the bus in Manhattan on his way home from a job site. He was walking along 5th Ave with Central Park right across the street. Out of the building comes a beautiful young woman wearing a Carhartt short jacket absolutely clean. The building was in an area with some of the richest people in the country lived. This was the first time he had ever seen a “civilian” wearing Carhartt. He told me about it and commented that was the end of Carhartt. In a way he was correct, in a short period of time they stopped making everything in USA and turned from a work ware company to fashion. Now they have a vaccine mandate even though Superman Court hinted it was not legal And my working friends are disgusted.
Thanks to this video I purchased the Detroit jacket I'm super stoked on it I already have a chore coat from Carhartt . Thanks for the informative video It definitely played a good role in my decision. Now the question is what color should I get next.
One of the main things being a wearer of watches I never liked with the popper sleeves is the bare metal back, it scratches the heck out of watches. I fixed it by glueing some thick felt over the back. But sleeves are always my Bete Noir as I have short arms so do prefer the poppers as I can then wear without the arms coming down over the tips of my hands. I wish manufactures would offer different sleeve lengths and the option of tailored of regular fit for each model. I remember in the old days many manufactures offered short, medium or long sleeve lengths. It can cost almost the price of s jacket to alter a popper sleeve or zip sleeve jacket to fit properly.
glad i have the older usa version in brown and black. it looks like on their website they have one hooded jacket and one pant usa made. guess even that dwindling offering is still better than 90 percent of manufacturers.
❤️ those old adverts. Brown duck water repellent. Men shrugged off the weather in cotton and flannel back then. Now they are drugged with the cosh of synthetics. I suppose they could wear it to wash the dishes.
Great video, Carl. I recently found several Detroits from the eighties, with blanket sleeves, small pocket-zip, etc. (6BLJ, …pre J97) After losing weight, my large Detroit jacket was too small. Don’t like the new ones. Sold all of the others, and kept a mediumish for myself. They were NOS, never worn. Quite a find!
I prefer the short, original cut of the jacket. The longer version that have been produced lately is kind of awkward IMO. In Europe, this jacket costs €130 in his "work" version whereas the WIP "fashion" version is about €180. Plain stupid if you ask me. Funny how people complain in the "review" section of the jacket on the official website, praising its original model like the one you had. Love the brand anyhow. Great video.
I have my Detroit jacket for a while now and won it from the Union Sportsmen's alliance. I saw this video and learned more than I never know about the jacket. I am happy to say and proud of it, "made in the USA". Thank you for the info.
I wanted a Moss Green Detroit for my uniform, but Carhartt has forsaken us. I'm not paying $500 on eBay, so I went with the Dickies Waxed Service Jacket. Very similar to the new style Detroit with a drop tail and a zippered chest pocket. It's cotton duck like the Detroit and much more comfortable than the Eisenhower. The drop tail hem is perfect for me because it lets me have my radio on my hip, but keeps me covered when I kneel.
I learned about Carhartt about a year ago when I found a store here in Prague and it subsequently lead me to finding your channel ✌️ I got me insulated WIP Detroit Jacket and looking at it along with your video it's right in the middle design wise - Detroit cuffs, mid-lenght and I just love it 👌 especially here in middle Europe where you don't see anyone wearing anything similar. With US made vintage jeans, a pair of Red wings and a worn Brooks Brothers sweater it makes for a dynamite autumn outfit! 🍂🔥
Hey man , the last one I had, the last two I had in fact had the buttons for the hood because the hood lasted for 2 jackets. I recall the last one had a big union print on the blanket. Made in USA. I’m really old or you’re a lot kinder on your gear. I acquired my addiction first as assigned uniform for a few famous ski resorts after college Since ‘91, I’ve worn through, to taters 7 Detroits most of em black ,1 blue, 2 Detroit Hamilton as well as a early 2000’ Hamilton short trucker (Levi Jean style hem) but, in gold duck. Always the stiff as cardboard duck cloth . Some entitled drunk girl visiting her friends in Willcox made off with my last one and a fresh pack of Reds . She Houdinied her Rix’s Tavern tab as well on a cold night 2 winters ago. It was weird going without one this winter. I still have my black CORDURA Alaskan Extreme whatever there calling it now . The Thinsulate chore coat style. I held off getting the new jacket because I was stunned the drop tail style. I’m going to spring for the organic winter version from WIP. Or possibly get a short size. I happen to appreciate hip high hem. The last one was a threadbare junk yard dog beat good and properly warn out for work and all bohemian sheik for a little Scottsdale shawty. But I’m a Medium ,5’9” ,150 AD-HD curious George monkey man. Generally climbing on the top or crawling under the project. For me it is a tool as clothing. Body armor that has saved my torso from drunken skateboarding commutes , a knife fight , nail gun fights, fireworks wars . Pub crawls and street brawls . to triple digit sport bike get -offs. And a lot of darn chores. I’ve kinda grown fond of them. I consider it an essential.
Carl Murawski, I used to do receiving in a Grocery and on busy with both overhead doors and the man door being open, I had to get a jacket to wear. The store winter jackets were too heavy. I bought a Dickies Canvas jacket with a blanket lining but couldn’t put my name tag on it. The Manager didn’t care I wore my own jacket as long as I had a name tag on. I eventually bought a Tough Duck one made here in Canada. That’s what I wore at work till I left due to my health. I did try the Carhartt but same issue as with the Dickies I couldn’t put my name tag on. I did keep the Carhartt one riding in cooler temperatures. That is till I left it in my truck and someone decided they needed it more than me.
Excellent video. Wife just bought me an older version with the Detroit cuff and I love it. Would love to get my hands on one of the J97 sandstone in the UK but it seems to be all of the WIP fashion stuff which are terrible.
I've got an old version from way back when you had the measurements in inches and not in sizes. I love my old jacket, I don't like the new ones with that extra bit on the back.
It's really unfortunate because I thought that I found my perfect jacket when I bought the older style jacket a few years ago. I really liked how roomy it was in the arms, slim waist and how it was short around the waist. Especially since I lift weights and it was perfect for my body type. I hoped that since it was a classic I could get jackets like that for years to come. Unfortunately not. I will not be buying the new one since it ruined the exact features I like. Time to look for an alternative.
Don't know about the Detroit jacket being the most popular but in my neck of the woods the chore coat and the artic jacket are been wearing Carhartt for a long time well before they became a fashion statement can remember when a brown (cotton duck ) chore coat with the blanket lining was 30-35 bucks
I still have my first one I bought the day I got in the trade 24 years ago. It is almost white and tatered. Hung it up and retired it. It was still made in USA. Dont' think I would buy one today with how Carhartt has changed.
My favorite casual wear jacket ever was a generic Dunbrooke I got many years ago and wore it until the cuffs wore out. My Daughter in Law got me a Dri-Duck to replace it and the cuffs have already wore out on that one. So I need another light-weight jacket. Thanks for the info.
Oh no - I can't believe they changed it! I had a Detroit I bought in 2008 but I had a large and didn't wear it so much as it was a bit too big - I ended up giving it to a friend and always intended to replace it. I just kept on with my A2 deck jacket which now really is disintegrating I'm in the UK and the Detroit is a bit more pricey here - I'd previously ordered from the USA. I never did get round to replacing it, and post lockdown I think a large would fit me great 😁 I like the old cuff and length - not sure I'd go for the new one.
Every time Carhartt redesigns their clothes, it's cheaper and uglier. I finally gave up on them altogether. The older Detroit jacket was perfect. It didn't work if you were fat, so that's why they axed it. Sad.
I like the old version mostly because of blanket lining. It was perfect. You didn't mention how the old version went from numerical chest sizing to overall sizing. Mine is a 54 I think and I got too fat for it.
I wanna buy one but the collar is a different color now, plus I see a lot of comments saying it’s not worth buying since the quality went down but I mostly just want the original brown collar back.

Nice photos
Very cool! Sometimes that zipper gets a little cruddy. Have you tried any WD40 on it or anything?
I could never afford a carhartt jacket had one when I was a kid, my old boss gave me one and I love that thing. I was at a flea market by my house and found one of these Detroit jackets from the 80s and I bought it and I love that thing too.
Appreciate the info. Under ten minutes, respect that.
Great video
How's the fit on the Tough Duck? Does it taper at all down towards the waist or is it just boxy? Huge sleeves?
@@sl1237 it’s a good fit. I’m 6,3 and quite muscular with broad shoulders and the medium is a good fit but still big. I’ve quite slim waist tho so it fits in the shoulders and flows down a bit towards the waist. But doesn’t look “baggy”. Either way I’d size down whatever your size is.
*edit: I’d also say that is has a really good quality inside and is insanely warm for the type of jacket.
tough duck is the canadian carrhart
I love my Detroit jacket! Got it a couple years ago for my birthday by my work colleagues and as you said Carl, it is just about the do-it-all jacket. Only other jacket I really wear is my Patagonia down sweater for those really cold days.
Great video! Love the rich history of Carhartt and the design iterations. It can be a bit confusing though, especially here in Germany: The classic Carhartt workwear is really hard to get, especially offline. Carhartt WIP with stores in every larger city is mostly overpriced in my opinion. - Making channels like yours even more valuable!
Fellow german here. feel you, it sucks😂
I'm a welder. One little spark on a zipper and the closure is done. For people like me the Chore Coat is the way to go. Thanks for the video. Well done
The Round House Oklahoma Jacket made in USA is another good option to consider.
love this type of comparisons
I had a Carhartt overalls with tool belt built in, and it was the most awesome thing I've ever owned. Second is my hooded jacket.
I just received my updated version. I decided to wax it in part thanks to your experiment with waxing. Love the channel and info.
Love Carhartt. Got me a huge Hoodie and long sleeve collection going on.. Have a couple of jackets too but i certainly need more!
Love mine! Got it a few years ago when interstellar came out.
I wear this jacket for work and I love how it is above my tool belt. I don’t wear it casually because I don’t tuck in my shirt and I don’t like how that looks.
Excellent video! Great info. Your articulation is perfect! You sound like a pro announcer. Well done.
I’ve had this jacket since my birthday in 2015. Damn good coat!!
Hopefully I don't get a lot of flack for this... but I actually like the new jacket and the new features that they put on it I think that they took the time to look at what was working and what wasn't working... Great review as always!!!
Isn’t it ironic i got a fast fashion ad before watching haha ! Great video man ! I like.
LEGENDARY jackets man. J97 for life
what color 1989? nice find
@@Klektic Carhartt brown! Like the older sandstone canvas material. Was a bargain and hardly worn. Easily one of my all time best hauls haha.
Literally just ordered one of these a couple days ago. We’ll see how it wears when it comes in
Great video, Carl!
Enjoy your videos! I like the style of the older version, but I own a new one and I'm very satisfied with it.
What size is the one in the bag?
@@ES-qe1nh XL
The j97 was a washed duck, which came in several colors.
The j001 was made with the original firm duck and only came in brown , blue, or black.
It also had the blanket lining in the sleeves
I think they made a mistake when they changed the Detroit jacket and the chore coat. They had two proven products and had to change them, and not for the better. They produce many other styles that have different options and could have kept their two iconic products original.
I wish they would bring back a firm duck long sleeve button down.
Carhartt in general. Changed what was good, why? More money. The only good stuff these days is WIP.
I still have my button up one I bought in 1997 working on the pipeline. It's white now.
I bought one of the detroit jackets about 8 or 9 years ago and shortly after took it up to visit my parents and help my dad do some maintenance work on their property. I accidentally left it there and now my dad wears it all the time and won't give it back! Great work jacket!
In the mid 1990’s my friend Joe who was a NYC union carpenter
, local 1456 Dockbuilders (and pile driving), was walking to the bus in Manhattan on his way home from a job site.
Now they have a vaccine mandate even though Superman Court hinted it was not legal
And my working friends are disgusted.
Thanks to this video I purchased the Detroit jacket I'm super stoked on it I already have a chore coat from Carhartt . Thanks for the informative video It definitely played a good role in my decision. Now the question is what color should I get next.
Great to hear! I've always been partial to Carhartt brown, but that blue looks great too!
(6BLJ, …pre J97)
After losing weight, my large Detroit jacket was too small. Don’t like the new ones.
Sold all of the others, and kept a mediumish for myself. They were NOS, never worn.
Quite a find!
Found one at thrift for $15. Was gonna flip it on EBay but wore it a couple times n I just love it now.
Great score!! They’re a great jacket and kind of timeless too.
My Detroit jacket has been through pure torture, I still wear it when working outside, I’ve probably had it about 15 years.
I learned about Carhartt about a year ago when I found a store here in Prague and it subsequently lead me to finding your channel ✌️
I got me insulated WIP Detroit Jacket and looking at it along with your video it's right in the middle design wise - Detroit cuffs, mid-lenght and I just love it 👌 especially here in middle Europe where you don't see anyone wearing anything similar.
I acquired my addiction first as assigned uniform for a few famous ski resorts after college
Since ‘91, I’ve worn through, to taters 7 Detroits most of em black ,1 blue, 2 Detroit Hamilton as well as a early 2000’ Hamilton short trucker (Levi Jean style hem) but, in gold duck.
Awesome video, a lot of cool information. Carhartt is pure quality. I love Carhartt stuff.
May Jesus bless you!
Same with their vests
It's really unfortunate because I thought that I found my perfect jacket when I bought the older style jacket a few years ago. I really liked how roomy it was in the arms, slim waist and how it was short around the waist. Especially since I lift weights and it was perfect for my body type. I hoped that since it was a classic I could get jackets like that for years to come. Unfortunately not. I will not be buying the new one since it ruined the exact features I like. Time to look for an alternative.
amazon i get all my old new models i love, there hard to find sometimes you have to import them but they are around
@@Realtimeray unfortunately the prices are through the roof now
Can someone tell me what brown pants that dude is wearing on the left at 2:09? please 🙏
Don't know about the Detroit jacket being the most popular but in my neck of the woods the chore coat and the artic jacket are been wearing Carhartt for a long time well before they became a fashion statement can remember when a brown (cotton duck ) chore coat with the blanket lining was 30-35 bucks
Ever blue collar guy in Chicago owns one. Currently in Iowa/South Dakota. Noone wears them here. Everyone wears the Active hooded jacket.
That's because they're warmer...
i had an NOS J97 that i put up on ebay for $159. it sold very quickly. definitely should have charged more
I still have my first one I bought the day I got in the trade 24 years ago. It is almost white and tatered. Hung it up and retired it. It was still made in USA.
Dont' think I would buy one today with how Carhartt has changed.
Got one at my local salvation army really happy with it
My favorite casual wear jacket ever was a generic Dunbrooke I got many years ago and wore it until the cuffs wore out. My Daughter in Law got me a Dri-Duck to replace it and the cuffs have already wore out on that one. So I need another light-weight jacket. Thanks for the info.
I have two older versions. Both are in shreds. I wanted to buy a new one but now that I've heard of the "upgrades" I'll look at the Dickies Ike Jacket
Oh no - I can't believe they changed it! I had a Detroit I bought in 2008 but I had a large and didn't wear it so much as it was a bit too big - I ended up giving it to a friend and always intended to replace it. I just kept on with my A2 deck jacket which now really is disintegrating
I'm in the UK and the Detroit is a bit more pricey here - I'd previously ordered from the USA.
Them silky sleeves make a jacket slide right off . They did that part right . I ll get one because they are good coats imo .
Great video Carl, also you truck is BAD@SS!
Hahaha thank you!!!
Great video dude!
Thanks man!!
I wanna buy one but the collar is a different color now, plus I see a lot of comments saying it’s not worth buying since the quality went down but I mostly just want the original brown collar back.
Tough duck chore jacket made in Canada warmer then the detroit jacket and looks more like the vintage detroit jackets with the darker collar.
The Kuhl Burr jacket in khaki is another good option.
