i watched as much of the creative live class as i could, and i have to say if any of you didn't catch it, its worth every penny. it was incredible to see ryan set up shots in a way you haven't seen yet. it gives you a great idea of how things work on a set and it was amaze balls!
A tip for winning your game Ryan. I've played a game similar to this before that involved trying not to laugh, or even smile, and I've found the secret is to feel the exact opposite of laughing or smiling--in other words, build up anger and you can resist laughing. I want to see you get on the scoreboard Ryan!
Something I've heard from several people is that a good many of the great comedy films are originally written as dramas then the comedy is brought in during revisions. The thought being is that there needs to be a good story regardless. And besides, what people find funny varies from person to person. Whether or not the first statement is entirely or not, there is still a good idea within the premise of it.
For the next episode of mail sack: How do you get money to buy a camera and software for your first project/s. Is there any crowd founding website for such stuff? Thank you!
I can tell you what I did. I made a campaign on Indiegogo and promoted it as much as I could. I went out in public to give out brochures, made special giveaways, promotions, films, livestreams and such. It has attracted a bit more attention. I say Indiegogo or kickstarter, although on Indiegogo you can keep all you get even if you don't reach your goal.
Just save up until you can buy a cheap camera ( I bought a T3i) then start filming until you feel comfortable enough to start selling stuff. Then you can just approach companies in your neighborhood to buy a promotional video or tutorials of some sort. By doing those projects you start to feel confident working with clients and you earn some money which you can use to invest in more and better equipment. I started with a T3i a borrowed H4N and my dad's tripod. Nothing fancy but it got the job done. Then I started to invest in gear and lenses. Bought a H4N, Manfrotto monopod (very versatile), samyang 35mm and the nifty fifty (canon 50mm f/1.4). Then I advanced to a Sachtler Ace tripod, some small lights and a shoulder rig + follow focus (Hong Kong-style). Now I'm renting different camera's for new projects to test which camera I want to buy next (C100, BMCC or GH4 etc. etc.). Just start writing, shooting and editing, and you guessed it... REPEAT!
Hey Ryan, We recently were in need of a new storage solution after the death of a few hard drives and the near loss of a lot of footage. What we did was build a small PC that uses a fairly low power processor and hooked up a bunch of hard drives. Then, through the recommendation of Puget systems, used a hard drive backup software that would take the information from 2 of our hard drives in the computer and back them up onto the other two hard drives. You could scale this up with 6 or 8 hard drives and it makes a great system to store files. Then, you hook it up to your network and you can access the files from any computer on the network. It's a fast enough connection to use the files when you need to, but it's definitely recommended to still use your internal for editing. We made a video about it on our gaming channel. A 12TB system for around $500.
a tip for storage is keep your eye out for a game company that is upgrading they sell off their old servers for cheep. i saw 17 of them for $150 with no drives or ram but it could hold 20 drives and 32 megs of ram and duel quad core processor. if you had one of these and filled it with 2TB drives you wont need any more storage for a few days at least
Regarding Storage… take a look at "Amazon Glacier", it's an Amazon Web Service which allows you to store teras of data for pennies. It's on the cloud so it is secure (unlike a hard drive it will not be corrupted), but it takes time to download it back, the data has to be "unfrozen". But hey… cheap!!
The funny voice you use when describing the CreativeLive class sounds a lot like the Ernie Kovacs character Percy Dovetonsils. Is that coincidental? Btw the CreativeLive class was awesome! Especially your superhuman feat of strength. I was ever so bummed I couldn't get a live seat. Thanks!
Could you guys please do a tutorial on how to make an animated (moving) film logo? I'd really like to make one myself but I'm not to sure how to make it all animated :)
Do you have any tips on how to get really critical feedback on videos? I am already active in several video creator communities but usually feedback is actually too positive where I know my work actually has flaws (because time - you know). It's hard to come up with improvements when you only get your back sugar coated.
Go to Reddit, there is a sub-reddit for filmmakers: www.reddit.com/r/Filmmakers/ They'll tear apart whatever you bring. You need to be able to discern between the people who actually want to give good advice and those who are just bitter and full of hate ;)
Hey guys at Film Riot! First things first, i have to say I'm pretty new to the channel and really love all of the amazing things about film making you guys have shared. Been watching for maybe two months now so I'm sorry if you have addressed this question before. I'm an independent music producer, and i kinda started watching this channel to learn how to make music videos (as well as i just have a love for film in general), but as with music is seems this is a very expensive path to start journeying, also being a complete novice i would be starting from the ground up, which is fine with me but that's not really the work id like my music to be represented by nor do i have the funds to afford all the gear it seems necessary to make a basic video deemed watchable at this time. So, i was wondering if there was a forum/group/community you guys knew about where i could link up with amateur/pro film makers who are actively looking for music for there pieces. This way i could get a win win, i can continue my own pace of learning film making from level one but also have people who know actually what they're doing making quality videos. I release a new track for free download every weekend on my sound cloud in case there are any filmmakers reading this who are interested soundcloud.com/flamingosgoha
I would suggest watching this video www.videocopilot.net/basic/tutorials/08.Titles/ I watched it and it really helped. Talks about the basic movements in 3d space and suggest ways to animate a logo.
How can I remove these ads? Sometimes I find my self in the middle of watching a video and not watching a video. Then I run into a 30 second Ad that I dont want to watch and walk away from the whole thing
im entering a film contest soon and i was wondering, is it ok to have a short credit roll? would it boost my chances or hurt them? plus any tips or film contests in general, if you feeling generous.
Hey Ryan, can there be a Monday challenge where it is a short film screenwriting competition? I know there are many many people that do not have access to good cameras, editing software, mics, etc, but anyone with a computer can submit a screenplay. Thanks!
That film was shot using the Phantom camera, which is capable of stupid-crazy high frame rates for super-slow-motion. Most DSLR's can shoot 60 fps, which is half speed in a 30 FPS project if you just want to do slow-motion, but it won't quite get you as far as you need; those sequences were shot in excess of 1000 FPS.
When you do stuff in slow motion, everything becomes very obvious. Ryan has shown how to fake punches in previous vids, but slow mo is a bit harder because you can see it for longer, and if you want to achieve an effect like Sherlock, you can't really do that without avoiding hitting your actor or spending big on VFX.
Yes I already know that. That's why I am asking the big guy. I have seen other people do it without actually hitting them. I'm not saying you don't know anything. I am just asking how he would pull it off.
liljshipman14 Well depending on how slow, it really does depend on your camera's fps. But an idea: Show your actor approaching the face with his fist, then cut to a different angle after the fist has supposedly hit the face, and have someone with a leaf-blower off-screen hitting the victim in the face with the air from the same direction as the fist. This can create a good impact effect (mainly in the hair), and if it is strong of enough, can add ripples to his cheek, and his facial expression from the air would probably match pretty well. You can even have your actors acting a bit slower. Then just replace the actual audio with sound effects or music.
Ryan please do an episode on how to do an "Unscripted reality tv show" I think you could make an amazing parody of keeping up with the kardashians or something. You could call it "Ceeping up with the Connollys"
News or freelance? Because there is so much movement in sport, change your shutter speed to be higher than usual, as this significantly reduces motion blur. A usual shutter speed at 25 FPS is 1/50th of a second, but for sports, you might look at using 1/75th, or even 1/100th. Also, shooting in higher frame rates is super helpful, one for speed ramping, but overall it reduces motion blur and makes it appear smoother. 60 frames per second, using a 1/120th or faster shutter would be good.
It depends what you define as "super slo motion". Although not a dedicated slow mo camera, the iPhone 5s (120fps) along with some frame interpolation in post-processing (optical flow in FCP, Twixtor, After Effects to name a few) can give some really good looking stuff.
Now don't take this the wrong way, Ryan, but I feel like you guys have been slouching a bit behind lately. I don't know what other stuff you've been doing recently, but it seems like ever since you guys abandoned Film State, you haven't been much more productive. We've seen only a handful of Monday Challenges over the last year, and you've put off the last one. This new show seems to be a step in the right direction, but it also feels very similar to what you've done before on Thursdays. I know you've been doing stuff with other companies, but I feel like after the last Monday Challenge, you guys shouldn't have taken such a huge break. I don't know, just a bit of criticism. I really have enjoyed watching your videos, but the lack of so much of what made you stand out has been non-existent for the last couple of months. Wall of Text/Rant over
Monday Challenge is something that comes and goes and is not a staple to Film Riot. It is more of an extra that we do to get you guys free gear and motivation to get out and shoot. It's coming back, but will continue to come and go with our availability for them. I love doing them, but I don't think you realize how much work they are for us. Also, check out our channel page. There is a playlist called "top episodes", they are some of my favorite that we have ever done, all within the last 2 months.
Film Riot Eh, I always saw it as a staple. Looks like a staple. But that does not mean you have to keep making them, especially if they burn you out. I just loved seeing how you connectd with the community and sort of got to mentor them through the challenges. But I get what you're saying. It must be a hell of a lot of work and effort watching hundreds of submissions. So in that regard I think it's good that you put them off once in a while. Everything has to change, even on Film Riot. It's good to mix and switch things up some times :) I just hope it comes back again soon :) It's one of the best parts of Film Riot in my honest opinion, even though I may not always agree with the first place winners :) One day I am going to enter myself, I hope.
umm...Sorry but i don't think they got any rainbow "sherbert" lol most people mistakenly add the second R. its actually pronounced and spelled "Sherbet"
nope.. sorbet and sherbet are both names for stuff but I'm not exactly sure which one is which. they are often used interchangeably so it gets confusing
hahaha kid listen up, if i say the word "spoder" you know its supposed to be the word "spider" now explain to me the organ system of a spider. oh you can't? ik you can't. google it maybe but u still don't know right off the top of your head. this is the exact same thing as what i did. how about you gtfo and eat your veggies so you can grow up

every time I heard josh talking I just imagine a young child stilling on the floor watching Ryan do the video, I love it!

Really? Thank you very much!
I'll chaco it out!

thanks! I can't say it's going well.... Well, it's going better than my last campaign! We got 11 dollars! HELL YEAH!
Well thats something. ;)

LOL! " Please do NOT bend the c-stands with bare hands" I laughed hard when you did that in creativelive lesson. you kept your kool though Ryan ;)
can we have a camera on Josh to see his facial expressions while trying to make Ryan laugh??
Google drive is awesome for collaborative writing you can both write at the same time chat and revisions are saved.
Please discuss your personal metered audio level choices when editing & exporting (the whole online/broadcast/film audio headroom thing: - 0, -6, -12, etc) Merci buckets

Comedy is timing. And I picked up a couple tips I'd never known about. Thanks!
Hey Ryan, you guys did a great job in the Creative Live course. I watched them live online.
Ahhhh I need you for the next episode to not laugh! I'm rooting for you man! Every time it just kills me, haha!

I love the sign in the background. Did Bill D. make that for you?

Isn't this the second week shouldn't there be a new Monday challenge???
I hope you take it positively, but watching your episode totally drunk on your birthday is totally epic!!!
Hey Ryan, I was wondering if you could do a Doctor Who effect when the Tardis materializes and de-materializes and show us how to do it.
dammit Ryan, win at least once. God. Get your shit together, Ryan.
Great video, Ry-Bread! Interesting as always
Aww, no Monday Challenge as promised?
Could you guys please do a tutorial on how to make an animated (moving) film logo? I'd really like to make one myself but I'm not to sure how to make it all animated :)

Ryan will have to win his laugh challenge at least once before it ends
Dear Ryan Connolly. Why are you and Josh so hairy? HILARIOUS!
Hey guys at Film Riot! First things first, i have to say I'm pretty new to the channel and really love all of the amazing things about film making you guys have shared. What software have you used for your Film Riot intro? I really like the liveliness of it :)
Wait I thought the new Monday Challenge was this week, did I miss something?
Hey Ryan can you show everyone how to make a really good but short trailer with a good choice of song?
Thank you Ryan ! For everything :D
Quick Tips is awesome. The CreativeLive course is awesome. Film Riot forever!! Also, any tips on editing a performance style music video?
Check out my channel for the c stand spoof funny times :)
Ryan how can I add artificial lights to an object, do I have to track it or something? Thanks
I'm trying to make a logo animation for my films I was wondering if you could possibly do an episode on how to do one. Thank you!
I would suggest watching this video www.videocopilot.net/basic/tutorials/08.Titles/
I watched it and it really helped. Talks about the basic movements in 3d space and suggest ways to animate a logo.
I have nightmares about being uppercut in the butt. What can I do?
Can you review the eimo pro DSLR shoulder rig?

Love you guys!
Is flycam nano okay for first stabiliser and it's for the 7D
RYAN!!!! If we are making videos for fun and not making any money off of them, can we use copyrighted songs. If not, why?
How can I remove these ads? Sometimes I find my self in the middle of watching a video and not watching a video. Then I run into a 30 second Ad that I dont want to watch and walk away from the whole thing
hmmm... did anyone notice the sign in the background that says "Please do not bend the c-stands with your bare hands"?
Hi Ryan, When do the Monday Chalenges start?

im entering a film contest soon and i was wondering, is it ok to have a short credit roll? would it boost my chances or hurt them? plus any tips or film contests in general, if you feeling generous.
Your Monday Challenge is more famous than your laugh challenge. :D
Hey Ryan, can there be a Monday challenge where it is a short film screenwriting competition? I know there are many many people that do not have access to good cameras, editing software, mics, etc, but anyone with a computer can submit a screenplay.
Thanks!
Where's the Monday challenge?
dude..... :) quick ?. How would you format your resumes?
you should CC everything ryan says. I think it adds to the comedic effect. think about it ;)
How would I put a fly in my film? I would want it to be flying around my actor. Thx :)
wish i would have had this when i made my last short film comedy. u guys should check it out though
Any software for the Story Board ?
Ryan! External hard disks are not the way! A RAID setup you must! Network Attached Storage you should.
how would you pull off a slow mo punch in the face ? like in Sherlock homes
That film was shot using the Phantom camera, which is capable of stupid-crazy high frame rates for super-slow-motion. Most DSLR's can shoot 60 fps, which is half speed in a 30 FPS project if you just want to do slow-motion, but it won't quite get you as far as you need; those sequences were shot in excess of 1000 FPS.
right but I don't want to actually punch my actor in the face.

liljshipman14 Well depending on how slow, it really does depend on your camera's fps.
But an idea:
Show your actor approaching the face with his fist, then cut to a different angle after the fist has supposedly hit the face, and have someone with a leaf-blower off-screen hitting the victim in the face with the air from the same direction as the fist.
This can create a good impact effect (mainly in the hair), and if it is strong of enough, can add ripples to his cheek, and his facial expression from the air would probably match pretty well. You can even have your actors acting a bit slower. Then just replace the actual audio with sound effects or music.
Let me see if I can spell out that last sentence that Josh spoke. Here goes:
"Who knows? The world is eiro-oya-gy-oysta."
Where is Monday Challenge?
Ryan you should make Josh laugh. Make sure you are still on camera so we can see the other end of it. Admit it, It could help your score...
we need a josh cam
HHEEEYYY!! Why not try to change roles?! Ryan will make Josh laugh!
Ryan please do an episode on how to do an "Unscripted reality tv show" I think you could make an amazing parody of keeping up with the kardashians or something. You could call it "Ceeping up with the Connollys"
Is Monday challenge coming back next week?
Hope so, Ryan said there was going to be a two week break, and that was two weeks ago :P
NorwayVFX I know, that's why I was asking! He said that they were going to line up some cool prizes for this next one!
Any tips for shooting sports videos?

It should be a t-shirt now !!! Check my spoof of it on my channel !!!
DIY DSLR cage?
what is the cheapest way to get super slo motion
Getting a slow motion camera. There really is no way to do it any other way.
***** Well, yeah. That's kind of what I meant. If his camera doesn't have that option though, he can't. That's what I meant.
shoot in 60fps and use a plugin in for after effects called Twixtor. helps make it even slower by interpreting frames and such wizardry
It depends what you define as "super slo motion". Although not a dedicated slow mo camera, the iPhone 5s (120fps) along with some frame interpolation in post-processing (optical flow in FCP, Twixtor, After Effects to name a few) can give some really good looking stuff.
GoPro is pretty cheap, very wide angle lens though.
Do you have any tips for extreme sports filming?

exactly what a 12 yo kid like yourself would say. go practice screen writing
Also, if directors can say "Feel free to do ____" rather than just "Do ____." :)
Hi RYGUY!!! :D I was wondering
if you could make some videos discussing the directing styles of prominent directors so that we roooookies could get some professional perssspective!!!???
Check out a channel called Every frame a picture...here on RUclips... He discusses that very thing and he's quite good!
Terrel Perry, YOU SIR are AWESOME!!! Every frame a picture iS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED!!! Having the time of my life watching Tony's videos
But..but where is the Monday Challenge....I liked those.
Am I the only one who feels like the 15 second laugh segment seems a little forced now?
Filmriot already did that in this episode : Film Riot - Run in Slow Motion, or just Limp like a Pimp
wait sorry wrong person
Yeah
I think its gonna be funny when its like 1000 to 0 but other than that yeah i dont fuck with it
