A yard of ale is around 2 and half pints. You're expected to down it in one go, and there's an amusing surprise right at the end. You still see them, usually hung up behind the bar of proper country pubs. A sporting landlord should let you have it for free if you can down it without spilling a drop.
This one of the episodes I always go back to for a hungover/comfort watch on a Sunday morning. “Delicious hairy Turkey!” has also become standard at the table for Christmas dinner with my sister and I every year without fail
There is no getting warm before you get to the bottom in a yard of ale, they are meant to be done in one go down in one sort of thing. Ale is probable preferred as Daniel points out is served at a warmer temperature it is also far less fizzy.
There's a few people commenting on the yard of ale but no one has mentioned the tricky part to drinking one. It is designed as a drinking challenge where you are not to spill any. However, at the base of the thin stem, the glass forms into a bulb shape. Once you tip it to a certain angle you will get a rush of ale forced down the stem and all over the person attempting to drink it.
Lmao, I die every time. "Not the dog. Not the dog!"(Peeks out window, sees dogs legs poking out from under the car)"SHIT, the dog!" "I should have thrown her like a discus!" The shot of Mark opening the trash and having Mummy's dead body with beans scraped over it should be really morbid, but that shot and Marks "FUCK!"and Jez acting all casual about it gets me laughing way to hard. Lmao, Jez running away and licking his fingers the whole time, XD!!!!
Our late Prime Minister The Honourable Bob Hawke (Australia), allegedly held the world record when he sculled a yard glass in 11 seconds at Oxford University. This could, in part explain The Simpsons' depiction of government in the infamous episode ending with a killer koala. Drop bears are real, by the way.
First episode of peep show I ever saw..I was scrolling through the channels n stopped on it out of boredom and I nearly died laughing...best comedy episode I ever saw on TV 😂
Peep Show was one of the rare shows I actually caught the 1st episode. Just seemed like another quirky C4 sitcom.. It took until series 2's 'mark the alchy' episode till I realised its solid status.
Those canal narrow boats are so easy to drive that even my former dickhead step dad, who never trusted me with anything, let me drive it unsupervised at 13.
I remember when I first saw this as soon as he found Mummy in the bin I just completely lost it the whole of the episode afterwards!😂😂 I saw the combination of uncontrollable laughter, cringe and utter disgust/gagging between the pair of you! 😂😂 I’m sure you know by now nothing is below Jeremy’s Level, and Mark too if (when) he gets dragged into it all lol
And yet many people (though not me) cite this as Peep Show's Armin Tamzarian moment, the episode it jumped the shark and never reached its former heights again.
I re-watched all of Men Behaving Badly recently and I was surprised how many aspects were like Peep Show. Some jokes were literally note-for-note the same. Peep Show's still very much its own thing though.
@@neilsun2521 Not seen the first series with Harry Enfield in Years, but yes, MBB is defiantly a precursor to Peep Show. I think the lads would enjoy it as well !
@@DavidZ4-gg3dm Peep Show is much better. A lot of that is down to the filming style and the internal monologues. (I hadn't watched MBB since the '90s though and was surprised how well it stood up. S3-S5 is the sweet spot.)
A yard of ale is a drinking competition, to down the whole thing in one hit. The people who can do it twist the yard as they swallow. It's like 3 or 4 pints.
It's more likely that a country or village pub like they're in now would have a yard of ale glass. Although I live in a fishing town and most of the pubs here have them. It's definitely not just for stag doo although there is an element of "on it" involved with downing a yard of ale. Also, it is downed, not sipped and it is served cold. Haha
Rugby clubs in my experience and the most successful person at downing it in one filled it back up again. Of course you have to stand on the table while the club house cheers you on. Amazed i still have a functioning liver sometimes! 😜
Best comedy ever. British comedy stands on its own i think, its totally different from American comedy, which i love as well. I have watched so many reactions to Peep Show. I love it, been enjoying watching with you guys, just found the channel in the last few days. 💀🔥🇮🇪🎧🌴
@@DavidZ4-gg3dm I was too cowardly to end it. I was a bit "Mark" in that respect. Besides, the sex was good, even if she did scare me. Which, if you think about it, is a bit "Jez".
@@JohntheLNERP2 Yeah, although it was a bit more complicated than that. I wanted to have sex with her but not spend any time with her apart from that because she was mental.
Most pubs in Britain dont do yards of ale these days, old school village pubs maybe, ive never seen one, i use to down pint of Guinness in four seconds but then when trying to challenge people now who can drink fastest i lose, i probably win on quantity if we got all day
eff off saying we're into room-temperature beer, if it's beer it's cellar-temp= cool and it doesn't last long enough to get room-temp. If it's a nothing lager, then chilled from fridge.
You guys should definitely try hiring a canal boat if you visit. I assure you, you’ll have a better time than Mark and Jez! I had a similar experience in a tall ship on Lake Michigan. Loved it.
@@neilsun2521 Yeah it is accidental but it's still pretty dark. When i first saw it i found myself fake laughing at the end because my pal was sitting next to me was genuinely laughing so i felt i had to but inside i was like ''na that's effed up''.
Spencer's comment about the yard of wine for hen-do's was a little misogynistic, but he's so sweet and well meaning, he get's a pass. Like David Brent (!)
Mark's inexperienced; this is his first ever relationship & he doesn't know how to be good at it. He's way out of his depth, in a relationship he doesn't want to be in.
“It’ll have to be a fuqing good poster to get that dog back” lol 😂
My favourite part of the dog-eating scene is Jez trying to convince Mark to eat the dog too. Even at his lowest moment he’s still motivated by spite.
This and episode 6 are sitcom perfection.

I still remember this episode airing on TV, I was crying with laughter at the end.
"That just went from a Saturday night to a Monday morning" - ETS
That's a perfect expression, I'm definitely using that!! :'D
You're supposed to drink the yard in one, just under 2.5 pints - it's a challenge.
Yeah, looks bigger than it is due to length.

The dog eating scene from this and the scene where mark is pooing in "shrooming" are the 2 funniest scenes. Oh and the time Jeremy blacked up😂😂😂
Jeremy eating the dog is one of the greatest pieces of comedy writing ever. Everything that leads to it is perfectly plausible, it's total genius.

You always think that Mark and Jez cannot get any lower, but the next step down is just around the corner every time.
Had to keep rewinding to look at your reaction when he's eating it. This and Gunny are my two favourite episodes.
The funniest detail is him sucking on his thumb after eating Mummy dog leg.

Yards aren't commonly avaliable- you'd have to search the pubs out that sell them!
Google has the answers, not at all widely available, but you can easily find places if you want to do the travel.
Such an awkward size to drink and probably costs more than the same amount in pints.
@@Lones555 it's the novelty factor, I'm pretty sure most places will charge through the nose so you get to keep the "yard"/glass.
