Nice work doc, I think i might build one of these with a lava pit so the zombie get killed automatically! its awsum that they ignore the players too :-) Its like an in game nerf for the zombies :-)
I love that you reply to peoples comments. I have gotten replies from you many times but never from other youtubers that are as big as you. Keep it up!
I think it might if you meet 3 requirements - 1 - They have to be the type of zombie that can pick up an item (i.e., rotten flesh) 2 - They would need to be in a holding cell with a roof over their heads so they don't burn. 3 - It needs to be in one of those chunks that's always loaded around spawn. (There are a few videos around about that).
Something cool you can do is use hoppers and a chest, so when you kill the zombies, the stuff the drop is automatically put into a chest, no effort required! Great tutorial, helped me out a lot :).
pretty good, you can even add a zombie purifier with mine carts, or make some pet zombies and send them to a friends place via nether portal, once you get the nether hub set up, or use them for decorative purposes. lastly you can try to spice things up by making a zombie horde, equipped with stone swords, leather helmets or pumpkins, and have a few custom equipped zombies with spare iron armor. i really hope you consider the last option, you should bring a whole horde of zombies over to spawn.
You might be confused with Sethbling's zombie maze where he tweaked the sight distance.Until they go hostile zombies can only "see" 16 blocks, thus the need to surround your work area with villager traps. The point is to not let them go hostile - if one spawns within 32 blocks of you it can wander, so you want it to find a villager and track to the trap so it will sit there staring at the villager over head. Once they go hostile, spawn rules go out the window and they can spawn right beside you.
Nice and easy setup. Just dig the xp room further down so the mobs hits block 21 for easier farm, it lets you farm with your fists and avoid making a ton of swords.
Thanks for this video, Doc! I'm so glad you're able to help me survive better in Minecraft! We all share the same HATE towards Zombies! I'm going to build this straight away to finally be rid of my Zombie infestation!
I was lucky enough to find a near-surface zombie spawner in a desert on our server, and I came up with something similar in order to get zombies from both the spawner and the new tracking mechanic. Best of both worlds.
Nice design Doc - taking your idea a step farther, I suppose one could stick a villager-in-glass at each corner of your base to create a safe working area. No need for cactus - just a 3x3x2 holding pen - then you could ignore them or farm them as needed.
The Afk idea and the zombies not being able to spawn can be easily dealt with by digging a 1x1 hole underneath the afk spot and putting lava on the bottom (that would get rid of the lava light issue) aswell as putting a closed trapdoor on top of the hole (to make them fall in the lava pit). Placing ladders help you climb up and down to the afk spot :D
That's why the hoppers are below the zombie storage area. If a zombie can't pick up a helmet, the helmet is sent back to the dispenser to be fired again. The transparent blocks above the zombies would then burn away all the zombies that don't have helmets.
Pretty sure you can prevent that by placing water at the feet of the villager. If that doesn't work, baby villagers can fit in a smaller area than grown villagers. If you build a 3x4x3 holding cell like the one in the video, but fill in the 2nd center block from the top with either a slab or glass, then you can have a baby villager in there and when it grows it will not suffocate.
Hey doc i hope you read this. I really enjoyed your cooking video you did a while ago and i want you to do more of it! Would be great for some relief! :D
So even if you wouldn't need the farm, those traps would probably be amazing to have around for a zombie clean environment / base! Just build a few traps hidden around your area and you get rid of the most part. :) AWESOME!!!
That does make sense, however what I was looking for is something that wouldn't waste any helmets by any chance and would detect each individual zombies as they go through a tunnel. I would simply use tripwire if it weren't for the fact that 2-3 zombies can go down the line at once. I was asking Doc for some type of stress-handling device or something that prevents multiple zombies at once. Your idea could work using a daylight sensor, though.
Wow... This gives me that good nostalgic feeling if minecraft when you would build huge moats and elaborate traps to spawn in mobs and collect their loot. Ahhh the alpha days...
i was thinking you should have done something like this after i saw your last video. i was trying to make up some designs for you but looks like you have figured it out xD
Very nice tutorial thank you. I also love the way you make them you were funny and i didn't get bored for a sec. I subscribe just in case i need something later on C:
Thanks for the tip. The fact that it's easy for the average player doesn't mean me, who stinks at every game, won't take hours to actually pull it off though. Cheers.
"To get a villager is easy, just cure a zombie" Yeah Doc, I saw your last video, I wouldn't call that easy ;). Freaking thing looked like a horror movie, alone in a swamp, at night, surrounded by the undead and it starts raining...
Hey docm , Theres a little improvement of me . At the first trap , you just digg 2 blocks down . It will be easyer and cheaper if you digg 23 blocks down . Thats the maximum zombies can fall down . If you hit them jet , they just died after one hit . ;-) Der Pole
You can use lava instead of cactus which makes them die faster and provides light so they don't spawn nearby, and also you can use the glass thing as your afk spot instead of wasting a villager. Incredible concept nontheless.
This kind of reminds me of the old "above ground channel" traps there were around back when mobs would willingly fall in lol. This is a lot nicer with the "bait" concept. It would be cool if there were a "bait mob" for each type of bad guy. Talk about an easy mob sorter :)
As far as I can tell, "regular" mob farms haven't changed. I'm getting pretty much the same throughput as before, maybe even a bit better although I can't say for sure.. Docs trap was more about having the zombies not swarming after him all time so he can actually get some building done. The side benefit of it being that it's a quick XP farm.
If you add a 1.5 block path out of the pit to a spot closer to the villager you can allow baby zombies to path to another location. This filtering them out for other uses.
Well, you could possibly replace the blocks above the holding cell with transparent blocks then place hoppers below their feet that feed into a dispenser that fires thorns helmets that is hooked up to a clock. If that makes any sense.
Zombie calling is more like a mob spawner than vanilla spawning, they will even spawn midair. The only limitations that might exist are light and a 1x2x1 minimum area, and I'm not 100% certain on light.
Hey Doc great tutorial. Just a thought, you could put hoppers underneath the 3 x 3 hole but not under the cactus (sand underneath like you showed), so that when zomberds die, you can collect the loot. Can you make xp jars in vanilla (nobish question but I never tried it):):)
I would recommend removing the half slabs from the collection point, because it would be easier to hit the zombies. Also baby zombies would not be a problem because they are over 1 meter tall.
darn, I had this EXACT farm idea that looked the exact same before 1.6 even came out (It was in the snapshots.) Well anyways, good job for thinking of this too.
For the first design, after the zombies are collected, is it possible to move them off to a holding chamber to be released later on, but without them becoming attracted to the zombie again? I'm asking if they can easily start targeting a player without being attacked by one.
Hi Doc, nice vid. I have not been keeping track of all the changes to spawn radii for general environment and for spawners. Are there changes to 1.6 that make mob farms less effective than previous versions of MC? BTW I think that one of the most interesting aspects of MC is how ppl keep creating new mob farms and how Mojang keep changing the rules to make old farms invalid (then we make new ones) keeps the game interesting. Keep up the vids!
With hoppers as a floor (or under soul sand if it works) the cactus variant could work. The jl servers mine-cart system worked with the cactus breaking the minecart and the minecart got picked up instantly by the hopper.
Nice work doc, I think i might build one of these with a lava pit so the zombie get killed automatically! its awsum that they ignore the players too :-) Its like an in game nerf for the zombies :-)
Finding this comment in the wild is insane.

holy crap :D this is one of the smartest idea in minecraft, that i have seen in a while.
This is super helpful Doc!! I haven't been able to find any spawners in my world, I will for sure use this!
I love that you reply to peoples comments. I have gotten replies from you many times but never from other youtubers that are as big as you. Keep it up!
Awesome Design Doc, I'm happy to see another Mob Spawner Design from you, keep them up my friend! :)
I never understand how people come up with these ideas. I mean i could never think of a BRAND NEW xp farm design.
Doc, this was an awesome tutorial!
I will most likely use this in my single-player world
I hope to see more! Keep it up man!
I think it might if you meet 3 requirements -
1 - They have to be the type of zombie that can pick up an item (i.e., rotten flesh)

Awesome, got one on each corner of my land and it works perfectly, so simple. Good job Doc.

Glad to see you made it after having some trouble at the beginning
Congrats on your NEEDED REVENGE, Doc!! Love your videos!! The never ending death cycle was crazy insane...I may have rage quit after that... LOL
Hey Doc i think this video is really good and all your other tutorials are good i think you should make a series on them -A fan-
This is awsome. Could not help but make one right after seeing this. Thanks man. Went from 1 to 9 in the first night.
Awesomely simple, definitely going to try this out with a mob softener of some sort.
absolutely genius doc. perfect for mindcrack server. need to start selling zombie protection on the server :)
Thanks for this video, Doc! I'm so glad you're able to help me survive better in Minecraft! We all share the same HATE towards Zombies! I'm going to build this straight away to finally be rid of my Zombie infestation!

Nice design, Keep up the good work Doc =D
I used this design as well it really works well thanks docm77 you are the best
Haha okay, It's 6:32 AM here aswell (The Netherlands).
I really need to go to bed but I just keep on watching your videos! :D
great zombie control , making one straight away , nice one doc !!!!!!

Nice design - I like using zombies for XP farms at the start of the game coz you can get so much random loot from them.
I Built it in my survival world and it works great!! Thank you so much Doc!!!!!!!
this is brilliant. Bravo on turning the endless waves of zombie destruction into a xp farm. :-)

Great Job! I also had this Idea, using the new zombies for XP... But I had no idea how to do that XD
I had this idea but I never made a vid :( but it's cool to see it implemented and made, great job doc

that turned out great Doc. its like you made a "Zombie Magnet"
Creepers have blown up looking through half slabs in my mob grinders before! I wouldn't be so sure doc.
Made it once works perfectly docm keep going :)
Outstanding, nice work Doc
Worked like a charm. Appreciate the tutorial, mate.
Nice work doc! Bit more simple than my zombie horde xp farm xD
yup, i saw this trap coming lol, great design doc!
Wow, funny, i would never of thinked about this design. It's so simple, i am so suprised!
Very nice tutorial thank you.
I also love the way you make them you were funny and i didn't get bored for a sec.
I subscribe just in case i need something later on C:
This farm is great even if you are not going to use it since you don't need to worry about the zombies in your area. I will build one of these today.
Thanks for the tip. The fact that it's easy for the average player doesn't mean me, who stinks at every game, won't take hours to actually pull it off though. Cheers.

the ending of your video earlier made me laugh :) nice to see you got your revenge!
Cool design doc!
Thanks Doc! this design is awesome!!!
This works sooo great!!!You are an amazing designer! Thanks for sharing...
Super cool Doc!
U r so awesome Doc! Never forget that! And never stop making videos! I
Such a smart design. great job :)

Doc, you should build a mob softener (like MumboJumbo's for example) to make the zombies a 1 hit kill. Great design though :)
So basically you took a hornet trap from irl and turned it into a Zombie trap...I love it.
Hm nice Video and Design Doc!
Pretty cool design; I might try this in my new world with a lava grinder.
If you add a 1.5 block path out of the pit to a spot closer to the villager you can allow baby zombies to path to another location. This filtering them out for other uses.

OH MY! DOCM POSTED THIS JUST 46 MINUTES AGO! HI DOC!
That's a pretty cool concept :D nice
That is extremely smart awesome job doc
This is such a smart design!
Very Nice!!! love your vids. keep it up.
Was actually working on something like this, this helps alot
I would recommend removing the half slabs from the collection point, because it would be easier to hit the zombies. Also baby zombies would not be a problem because they are over 1 meter tall.
thats even better than the one i know with a spawner. nice bro
Doc did it again!
Love the content doc. And get some sleep you crazed doctor :)
darn, I had this EXACT farm idea that looked the exact same before 1.6 even came out (It was in the snapshots.) Well anyways, good job for thinking of this too.
OMG first popular youtuber that reply to my comment xD.

Doc is planning his revenge... First the zombies make a DocM farm, then DocM makes a zombie farm.

SUPER AWESOME THINKING DOC!!
He's already made it on the Mindcrack server. At the start you directly see Pakratt saying stuff.
awesome vid doc
Doc, you could get the zombies fall the 22 or 23 blocks get them to half a heart to kill them with you fist.
Nice vid doc
Nice :D I didn't actually think about that; thanks!
Great Video Doc very usefull
According to minecraft wiki, zombie can choose to either track a player or a villager, it doesn't say that they can track villagers better tho.
It's possible to make them spawn more in many different ways. DocM ask ZipKrowd to look at how the horde spawning works.
you could put hoppers on the ground to pick up some of the drops such as armor/tools/weapons/etc
