Doc, you can plant flowers on tilled dirt, which will keep it tilled, but block melon or pumpkin growth, but still keep that effeciency high. You can completely surround your current setup with tilled dirt that way.
Yeah, I've figured it out since then and done some messing around with them in creative but thanks anyways for trying to help :). I just wasn't 100% sure if they counted being able to see the sun and SL but apparently they just care about SL.
Docm, I have just a suggestion for further tutorials. You can have other in the video to help with the technical talk how it works and so. But for the building part i would say it is easier if you do it by yourself. It got a little cluttered when JL and Philip(?) did it for you. Just my opinion and maybe something to think about. Other than that great tutorial and one build I was going to do next when i play :)
a normal hopper will only pick up stuff thru blocks that are less than a full block height, so slabs or soulsand for example. a hopper cart is raiser up on the tracks and will pick stuff up thru a full block
Hey doc, although I wanted a new melon/pumpkin design for a long time and survival friendly, by the way great job, I still prefer xisuma's 5x5 stackable farm
You need a glass block above then for it to work or completely open :) Might work with hoppers too since they function the same with sunlight as glass.
we can't soil under glass anymore, and for some reason 3 of 5 pumpkins ends up on top of this farm, even with 2 layers of glass, I'll try with solid blocks. I changed regular piston with sticky and solid block and its perfect now :)
Awesome tutorial, love this design. I plan to build a couple of these around my single player world (I know the design can be extended, but having multiple ones would make it possible to have access to pumpkins all over the place :D). A question though, how well does this work iif i have the daylight sensor underground with just the block above it open to the light? I haven't messed around with daylight sensors myself yet and am curious as to how they interact with SL like that.
Danke DOC
Tried this in 1.5.2 and latest snapshot, built it twice in creative and survival making sure its exactly like the one you guys built, but all variations I've built all have a ton of melons & pumpkin escaping the glass, or just sitting on the dirt not being picked up. The cart ends up picking up about 2-4 pumpkins & 10-20 melons on a full harvest.
Yea I suppose that is true. I was actually so caught up in testing it that I didn't even think that this will still generate lots of pumpkins/melons over the amount of time I'd end up needing them anyway.
Doc did you guys try having tilled soil with wheat planted on it instead of glass blocks? The wheat will block the melons and the soil will stay tilled. But does the wheat being there defeat the purpose of increasing the melon spawn rate?
haha ich bekomm immer die selbe antwort XD. Dann brauch ich jetzt wohl nicht mehr fragen! Also ich hoffe einfach mal, dass es so schnell kommt wie möglich! :D
Are the four blocks in the corners at 3:00 there to have a higher chance that a melon grows on one of the four adjacent blocks? Because I've never seen a melon grow diagonally
Couldn't you still do that by moving the water blocks back one space (they will still be close enough to hydrate the crops) and then adding an lane of minecart track to the rail pick up the pieces that land on those blocks?
how is the hopper picking up the melons through the ground? i tried using hoppers in 1.5.1 with tilled soil being slightly less than 1 full block but it didn't work. Also i know plants don't update in the spawn chunks but does this include their fruits?
I used this creation in Minecraft and it was really nice! I have a question to you. Can you please make a another Tutorial for a Melon/Pumpkinfarm in the version 1.6? I really loved this creation it was not high efficent and compact but now you can t hoe dirt under blocks.
Do most of the melons grow in one day/night cycle? If so, it might be a good idea to harvest more often. If a melon grows in 1 minute but isn't harvested until 20 minutes later, then you're missing out on 19 minutes worth of more potential melons.
And Docm, when you are bored, please build a Irn Golem XpFarm. But that would be too slow, so build a villager XpFarm next to it. That would be funny :D
Great work guys. Do minecarts keep their momentum if the chunk is unloaded? I can't remember. That's the only thing that would bother me with this design.
So you don't use normal hoppers under because they'd update everything? Or just not resource efficient? I'm always weary of free entities - they could do anything they want.
Guys, the hoed dirt under the glass is just for efficiency but because it take one whole minecraft day it will most likely have grown all the melons anyway
Problems: 1) I can't till soil beneath glass. Was that patched? 2) The pistons break the tilled earth where the melons are supposed to grow. It just becomes dirt. 3) I added all the extra glass recommended and even more. I'm still getting fistfuls of items popping out of the device.
i built the farm, and im getting bugs where the melons and pumpkins phase into the glass and dont get picked up, and some launch like a cannon. any help?
Trying this design in 1.5.2 with pumpkins on one row and melons on the other. The pumpkins are almost always getting stuck on top of the dirt blocks where the pumpkin vines are planted, while most of the melons are getting picked up. Any ideas?
Hey Doc for some reason when I change the time 22500 but the piston isnt moving, the bottom torch is not turning off (which i'm guessing is bad) and the minecart is not moving. Whats going wrong? thanks
Yeah. I agree. But just today I found a video about top speed traveling on rails without any boosters. Just using a pig with a saddle in the minecart and riding on the pig... So the gold is now even less valuable for me.
Nice videos man, keep them good :) , wanted to ask maybe u can give link or say where is the problem i wanna create the server on 1.6 snapshot but i donwlaod server it is "13w19a" and my launcher "13w23b" and i cant join to my server... i tried many things its still dont work :(
i built this with minecraft 1.6.2 but power doesnt transfer through the repeater. When daylight hits the single piston fires but all the other ones do not fire and the cart doesnt move.
i find there are enough things to do that you cant automate, that it balances out... why am i harveting melons to eat, when i could be choping trees to build with for example.
Am i alone in really disliking using day/night detectors as timers? Do other people never use beds, which will screw up the harvesting? Still, very efficient design, and very simple to stick a different timer onto it.
is there a way to have a different timer that will make the pistons go off in a shorter amount of time? basically an example would be every ten minutes
now you got a bunch of melons. so you now have more melons than you know what to do with. a bunch of healing potions, melon blocks, food, even melon houses.
thats the problem with these designs that all the melons are harvested together i prefer the more expensive designs that use bud switches to individually harvest the melon the instant it grows, putting all the items into a hopper chain this way melon growth is at maximum efficiency with no down time but it is less compact of course
It's pretty cool how doc says something like "We should change it to night" And someone does it immediately :D
Doc, you can plant flowers on tilled dirt, which will keep it tilled, but block melon or pumpkin growth, but still keep that effeciency high. You can completely surround your current setup with tilled dirt that way.
I love your videos! :D Never stop making them. "AAAAAALRIGHT GUYS!" xD
Btw, you dont make tutorials on new mods?
Sweet jesus.... Dat efficiency! Another excellent contraption from Mr Docm77! I do believe you earn my applause fine sir!
Yeah, I've figured it out since then and done some messing around with them in creative but thanks anyways for trying to help :). I just wasn't 100% sure if they counted being able to see the sun and SL but apparently they just care about SL.
Great design, and thanks for the info about the need for tiled earth!
236,000 subscribers! Congrats Doc :D
It's awesome seeing those automated designs in vanilla. I rather use frame motors or turtles. :)

I agree with you, I usually use 5min timers, it's a lot more reliable and you can sleep as much as you want.
they do. when you reenter the chunk, it will continue travelling!
a normal hopper will only pick up stuff thru blocks that are less than a full block height, so slabs or soulsand for example. a hopper cart is raiser up on the tracks and will pick stuff up thru a full block

Awesome design doc :D
So using this in my minecraft world! Thanks, i have always wanted something like this machine.
Love this design! It's quite clever!
hey doc what i used in my design are ladders(i think u can use torches aswell) to prevent the melons to "spawn" on the efficiency increasing blocks
great video and concept doc :P

This was just What I was looping for
Yea I suppose that is true. I was actually so caught up in testing it that I didn't even think that this will still generate lots of pumpkins/melons over the amount of time I'd end up needing them anyway.
top-notch as usual!
can the design be made bigger for larger scale production or would you need to make multiples of this single design??
I am going to amaze my friends with this thanks :)
If you sleep at night it can skip the cycle. So I put a button on the block with the redstone torch to manually trigger it.
Doc did you guys try having tilled soil with wheat planted on it instead of glass blocks? The wheat will block the melons and the soil will stay tilled. But does the wheat being there defeat the purpose of increasing the melon spawn rate?

all the powered rails that you put have to be powered rails? or you just need to give the minecart enought momentum?
I used this creation in Minecraft and it was really nice! I have a question to you. Can you please make a another Tutorial for a Melon/Pumpkinfarm in the version 1.6? I really loved this creation it was not high efficent and compact but now you can t hoe dirt under blocks.

Hey Doc really nice design. I also saw a very good design by sZPeddy. He is a very impressive MCer and I am nominating him to be on Dear Doc.
Can you have a dirt block where the stone replaced the tilled soil that gets updated, even untilled won't it increase the melon rates slightly?
hey doc i really miss the modded survival with monkey farm.Do u think u will ever do something like that again?
Guys, the hoed dirt under the glass is just for efficiency but because it take one whole minecraft day it will most likely have grown all the melons anyway
hey doc, is the growth with this design so fast that almost all melons will grow in the time the clock goes?
Problems:
1) I can't till soil beneath glass. Was that patched?
2) The pistons break the tilled earth where the melons are supposed to grow. It just becomes dirt.
3) I added all the extra glass recommended and even more. I'm still getting fistfuls of items popping out of the device.
my Question is instead of a day night sensor could you use a button? of course it wouldn't be so afk but you could still have an automatic one
i built the farm, and im getting bugs where the melons and pumpkins phase into the glass and dont get picked up, and some launch like a cannon. any help?
Works in 1.5? without snapshots?
I love your desing.
Trying this design in 1.5.2 with pumpkins on one row and melons on the other. The pumpkins are almost always getting stuck on top of the dirt blocks where the pumpkin vines are planted, while most of the melons are getting picked up. Any ideas?
Doc, a daylight detector wouldn't be the most efficient, would it?
Try using buttons instead of glass... it won't destroy tilled soil and melons won't grow there.
Hey Doc for some reason when I change the time 22500 but the piston isnt moving, the bottom torch is not turning off (which i'm guessing is bad) and the minecart is not moving. Whats going wrong? thanks

Can you replace the Day/Night censor with another input like a lever?
I dont think we can till soil under glass anymore.
This works with pumpkins aswell right?
does it need to be of the ground?
Nice videos man, keep them good :) , wanted to ask maybe u can give link or say where is the problem i wanna create the server on 1.6 snapshot but i donwlaod server it is "13w19a" and my launcher "13w23b" and i cant join to my server... i tried many things its still dont work :(
why do you make the glass wall 2 blocks high?
kann es sein dass regen die blöcke auch updated ?
i built this with minecraft 1.6.2 but power doesnt transfer through the repeater. When daylight hits the single piston fires but all the other ones do not fire and the cart doesnt move.
i don't like using automatic contraptions in minecraft cause then i don't have to do anything and i get bored, but i do find them very clever
Made my day.
why do you not block it off with other seeds?
Hey I can do this. Thanks for a very easy to understand tutorial. :-)
Is this 1.5.2 or is it a snapshot. Will it work on both?
You can use buttons to block all dirt you need.
As I heard about the hopper minecart thing. Exept I failed with the timer
i find there are enough things to do that you cant automate, that it balances out... why am i harveting melons to eat, when i could be choping trees to build with for example.
Minecart could have one more layer of rails on both sides.
I know, but they said in the video that the tilled earth increases chance to grow.
check xisumavoids video on his storage system, you dont need to stack chestminecarts but chests!
I love you doc
Am i alone in really disliking using day/night detectors as timers? Do other people never use beds, which will screw up the harvesting?
Still, very efficient design, and very simple to stick a different timer onto it.
is there a way to have a different timer that will make the pistons go off in a shorter amount of time? basically an example would be every ten minutes
hopper clock
Yes you can, it's only there so the system is fully automated :)
the hopper minecart can grab items trough full blocks
normal hoppers cant
Hey Luete, macht irgenteiner von euch die tutorials auf deutsch?
does this still work?
You DEFINETELY played 'Age of Mythology'. I can see it. Your picture tells me. xD Maybe you just found the picture, idk :)
are the glasses optional :/?
does it work in 1.5.2
it triggers but next time it becomes night time it will work fine again
Another Insta-Like for Doc :P
You play fable 3???
now you got a bunch of melons. so you now have more melons than you know what to do with. a bunch of healing potions, melon blocks, food, even melon houses.
this could be because the hopper minecart only has a limited storage
why no water stream?
Doc can u play dont starve?
Yeah, but mass producing them you could get tons! :)
Wow, that was unasked for.
thats the problem with these designs that all the melons are harvested together
i prefer the more expensive designs that use bud switches to individually harvest the melon the instant it grows, putting all the items into a hopper chain
this way melon growth is at maximum efficiency with no down time
but it is less compact of course
does this work on xbox?
Very Interesting
how did he use stone ans bone meal
Awesome sauce
Then the items can't go up on the walls
I didn't know minecart hoppers could suck things down through the top of blocks.
Glistering melon ---> potion of instant health mayby?
