- A fun DIY project to benefit your furry friend. My cat tends to like drinking water that is moving so I thought of this project and wanted to see it come to life.

Would be cool if you put a small bowl on top and let the water flow out of that. It would go through the PVC and fill the top bowl and flow off the sides and you'll get this cool 360 waterfall.
i like it update man, the maintenance, just a quick explanation on what i’m about to get myself into bro
That drilling sound highkey giving me dentist appointments ptsd
Instead of getting a larger diameter pipe, you can get a coupling/adapter that will fit over both the pipe and the pump outlet. It's always good to have pvc/cpvc cutters on hand. I have cutters for pex, pvc, and copper in a tool case. But, I've also been renovating my bathroom so I needed them.
You could even have used some sort of blade or grinder attachment on the dremel to cut that faster. LOL. But hindsight.
I want to make a larger one out of a dish tub-- something with larger capacity because I have 14 cats. I'm wondering if I can get some sort of smaller container from dollar tree or something that can be set in (similar to what I have with a store-bought fountain) that I can put filters in.
to adjust pvc pipe you can emerge the tip in boiling water to make it soft
To enlarge the pvc hole diameter simply heat it with heat gun or hair dryer or stove until slightly soft and snug it to the pump outlet pipe..
thank you :)
PVC fumes are EXTREMELY toxic so do this in a well ventilated area. Most people refrain from using an open flame to heat the pvc because it produces a lot more of the toxic fumes when it heats quickly or catches fire.
A safer, non-toxic-fumes method of making the pvc fit is by boiling the end in hot water 💦
That's what I was thinking
You could also heatgun the end of the PVC to make it pliable, as an alternative option.
Yes! Was about to say this
Not a good idea. You need to keep cleaning the stones or else they will get moldy and cause illness to your cat.
Great warts n' all tutorial!😂
Don't you have any kind of cutting blade for your Dremel? Better go buy one of those puppies. 😁 They come in handy.
Is this guy real??? You can just heat the pvc tube and adjust it. And to cut it??? Just use a X-acto knife, it takes 2 seconds to cut it...
Is the filtration necessary? Will the pump clog if I don’t use it?
Probably so. BUT, look into Colloidal Silver (a tiny bit put in their water) to keep your pets' water clean & fresh. It's a natural antibiotic & heals many illnesses. NASA uses it to keep their water clean. Also ER hospitals use it (conspicuously on their bandages) to keep bad burns from getting infected. Can be used (internally) just as anti-biotics are used. It can also be used in the eye & ears (for infections & pains caused by them), for teeth & gums, to clean the air (via a diffuser) & everything else.
JUST MAKE SURE to NEVER it in STEEL or ALUMINUM pots. ONLY USE them in CERAMIC or GLASS vessles.
Cutting a pipe with a straight blade while wearing a engineering shirt... loved it.
Links to where you bought stuff and an estimate of how much the project was altogether would be awesome. I got the 5 dollars for the bowl.
I got the water pump (fish tank filter) for 3 dollars
I didn't use filter media I just change the water every two days
@@GadGetHackss See yeah, I agree, I was thinking of simplifying and not using the filter. I haven't started making mine yet, just gathering materials right now. I just want to make sure it is safest possible for the critters too.
Texas State Engineering ?!?!?!?! SCARY !!!!!
First, thank you for making this video. We just moved back to NY and my Akita is having a rough time so I want to keep her excited by making one of these for her. And it's healthier so that's a plus.
It’s mostly suitable for cats 🐈
You can use a stainless pipe I guess it’s better
Awesome love it❤
Who else is here in 2022???
This is the best video on RUclips for cat fountain. Thank you! I’m gonna try. ^_^
Funny and informational. I'm going to make one now!
This isn’t Minecraft
You can just make a hole for on that filter for the pipe instead cut it half 😁
Take your pump with the outlet with you when you go to purchaser PVC pipe. That will solve a lot of problems.
Yer funny! Ha! Thanks babe.
Can you tell me how heavy this is? I might have to make my own too, since my cats are very destructive.
Nice! I wanted to see the kitty drinking tho
hey bro, mine gives me a bit more powerful jet that is spilling water around. Any way ti mufflle it?
Or you can just buy one online for around twenty bucks.
Can you link a GOOD cat fountain that isn't plastic and requires a life time supply of filters?
The savings is in the filters... And its a significant saving over the long run... Not to mention, the DIY ones are often gorgeous
what all these diy makers dont tell you is how often and difficult it will be to keep this thing clean?
Believe or not to cut that pipe if you use the string to go back and forth it went through it like butter
is it a usb connection or AC power? Is their a risk of electrocution with the AC pump?
So kool. I like yours too. Thanks! 💯
Ha! The Grindr plug...
And for the price of building this you could buy a fountain that is quiet!!
I did it mainly for the joy of building something. Also I like ambient water noises.
Actually, working out the costs, replacement filter pads for the store-bought fountains work out to be very costly. The savings come there.
@@BM-cz5uz Or, like in my case, I can hardly find the replacement filters since they stopped selling the Apetdola water fountain that uses a cord.
Hey how often do u clean this out
I change the filter every month. But do a light cleaning of the bowl every week.
How frequently would you have to change the filter media?
I’m changing mine every month.
Its been 3 months, how would say using it? Is it better for your cat's health? I have problem with my cat's chin, it keeps getting acnes. I probably need this project, but i want to know how it works for you. Thx!! Great tutorial anyway
@@curiouscat7941 have you tried simply using glass bowls and cleaning them every couple days?
@@curiouscat7941 Try using a ceramic bowl, even for the food. That helped a lot to my cat.
Ammaris Raposo i did. But still got acnes on his chin. Probably because he's drolling a lot too. Because he lose his front teeth (idk why,i got him from a cat rescuer). So until now, i have tried many things. Keep his bowl clean, wipe his chin every night before sleep, wash his chin with treatment shampoo, the last thing i havent try is changing his food because im afraid it will caused him urinary/digestive problem, with his food now his tummy is fine, everything is fine, except the chin😅. So i might i want to try this project
Death trap for a innocent cat
A metallic pot, water and a live electric wire inside: recipe for death. If for any reason the insulation fails, that fountain will become a death trap. You might consider changing your design, so that the wire can be completely isolated from the fountain. Like drilling a hole under the fountain and sealing it with a rubber based compound. This is just too dangerous!
I don't think that would be necessary since it's only a 12v DC pump. No?
@@hariveturi4193 That depends on the rated current and design of the pump. I could not see it very clearly, but it looks like the wire that is submerged in the water has the 110AC flow. 10:38 shows a two-wire cable that has no grounding, and appears to be a 4A rated cable, used for AC applications. Even if that pump has a 110 to 12VDC transformer, without grounding it could put your cats in risk. The tongue is extremely sensitive to any voltage (a 2V / 10mA could shock even an adult human, have you tried putting a 9V battery in your tongue ? like that), and a small cat could become traumatized if that eventually happens. Either way, better safe than sorry.
@@Tiagotaf The workaround to this problem would be braided cable sleeves. They're tough and can take some damage.
@@hariveturi4193 That would protect the external part of the wire from being chewed or damaged. But what about the pump internals ? It might have a factory defect, or may be disconnected by the cat pulling the wire or an accident that pulls the wire out. My cat managed to destroy a faucet by dropping a 2Kg vase over it. Never underestimate a feline destruction capability.
Nah don’t worry, wires on aquarium water pumps are meant to be submerged. As long as you keep water off the part that plugs into the outlet it’s fine! I’m an experienced aquarist, if you feel like taking my word for it.
Can we use copper tubes (instead of the plastic one you used) for less toxicity in our pet's water?????
No copper is quite toxic
@@Monica_bondevik No it's not. Copper is an essential nutrient. Especially for RH negative blood types.
I don't see why not. Copper bowls for pets are A+. May as well go all out, and do the lot!
