this is gorgeous and i got so excited when I noticed all of the greenery was pet-safe! My cat’s fountain was made of all plastic, a nightmare to clean, (full of sharp corners and I can never seem to get the damn gunk off) and it just broke! (I bought it only a few months ago for $20) I’m gonna diy something like this instead for my baby to enjoy!
I have a couple of crazy cats who love water so much, they will spill their bowl and will often go thirsty all day until we come from work. We finally opted for a large plastic container so it’s too heavy for them to tip it over, and we have put it in the shower so it’s alright if they splash it all around. But that’s still not optimal, so I’ve been wanting to build them a fountain that is too heavy for them to tip over, with heavier rocks inside it so the water level is not too deep so they can still play with the water without causing a flood in the living room. I bought an extra small fountain pump at Home Depot, and have been scrolling for ideas here. I am so glad I bumped into your video! I am going to take this pump back and head over to the reptile section at the pet store so I can buy a filter like yours! Thank you for the great ideas on how to make the perfect cat safe drinking station for my silly cats
I made this fountain garden for my cat because I loved the idea but in practice it failed me. So far to get a jungle like you show required a much larger base bowl and the plants you recommended are suffering without nutrients in the water. I have to refill about 1/2 gal. every day which seems like a lot. Working on modifications to improve my setup. Thanks for the idea. 6:04

My cat has urinary issues and getting her to drink additional fluid is challenging (even when put into her food); yet, she was once feral, so I think that something like this would encourage her if it reminds her of her outdoor life. I've tried pre-made fountains and she shows interest for a few days, but then, stops using it. I might as well try this. Thanks for the video!
Yes I was so excited to see this project for the same reasons!! My cat recently started getting urinary struvite/crystals as well (an unfortunately super common issue 😿), and it's been a challenge figuring out how to get him to drink more. Filtered/moving water is supposed to be better, but I swear all the commercial fountains are POS- stay dirty/ near impossible to clean, break easily, or just insanely expensive. So happy to see this option which looks very doable, affordable, plus the cat friendly plants as an added bonus and point of interest for him 😻! I love the idea here of using an aquarium filter as well- feels like this should work much better than the other options I've seen, this is so amazing!! Thank you so much for sharing (and awesome video all around)!!!
@@ryanlanyi I learn as I go too. Cheapest way to grow grass is to buy farm feed oat seed. We feed it to our chickens and it sprouts well. Cats love oat grass.
How often does the filter need changing? Do you have to run the filter 24 hrs. Can it be turned off at night? This is the best cat fountain I’ve found!
Change filter about ever other month. You can turn it off for awhile, but the water needs oxygen to stay clean so I don't recommend it. Watch so it doesn't overflow as the water drains out of the pump!
@@ryanlanyi Do you need to clean the body of the filter? The store-bought cat fountain I have now builds up all sorts of slimy muck if I don't clean the crevices of the fountain regularly.

This is so creative and beautiful! What kind of maintenance does it take to keep it clean and running smoothly? Do you just wash the cat dish and change the carbon filter?
Thanks! It takes very little maintenance because both the plant roots and the filter clean the water. It's always crystal clear. So far regular maintenance is just topping off the water as necessary. We'll clean the bowl and change the filter too when its time. Thanks for watching, subscribe for updates!
@@ryanlanyi hope you see this but do you get slime in the bowl or filter because I’ve been looking at cat water fountains but many of them build up a coat of slime if not clean every week. Also do you think a uv sterilizer would benefit in a setup like this?
A couple questions: 1. How do the plants survive without soil? What's the difference between clay stones and regular ones? 2. How do you know when the water level is too low for the pump before it burns itself out? 3. How often do you have to empty everything to clean the fountain, as I'm sure sediment and calcium accrue on the stones and bowl.
@@ryanlanyito clean the fountain you must remove all plants and pebbles I'm assuming? I'm curious about the plant care, the constant level of water on their roots and the absence of soil wouldn't make their root to rot? I've heard cats love to drink water from moss, I guess if I want to make this kind of fountain with moss the process is pretty much the same? Btw, amazing video!! I truly loved it, that kitty is such a lucky one ❤
Curious how your setup has held up in regards to bacteria and slime build up? Have the plants and regular siphoning of the water been enough to keep the water fresh and safe?

I read that some cats prefer the water to have movement, something like a fountain. I love plants as well so your particular fountain has definitely caught my attention, I'm curious tho on how well the plants do without the soil? I guess I know some plants can be hydro planted(?) (grown in just water?) But I always figured they still needed nutrients added in to keep them from basically starving? Or am I completely wrong? Have all the stuff needed on order but...... My cat now drinks from a pitcher that I add water to daily. That's how I just discovered she is drinking more water than she used to in the last week +. She now has an upcoming trip to the vet to check on this. With the pitcher I know exactly how much of an increase or decrease right away. With the fountain I will build, this will no longer be possible as in evaporation, plants usage of water, etc. It will be better water (she loves the stagnant water though) but I will not know anything except when I actually see her drink from the fountain. I'm still going to build it even if she doesn't use it, it will look nice in the room. Everything, including a year + of filters will be less than the $90+ for a plain looking cat fountain.

We love this fountain and tried to duplicate it, but neither of the Repto Filter links in your descriptions worked for us. We also caught a glimpse of the QR code on the bottom of your box, but that didn’t work either. We searched online for the filter at Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc. but they only have the 60 GPH filter instead of 90. Yours is perfect! and exactly what we’ve been wanting. I wanted to ask you, did you use the full 10 L bag of the clay pebbles on Amazon because I would only use it for this one project should I get one smaller? Thx for sharing!!! Love it!
To creator of this clip, have you read the warnings on the Tetra reptile fountain pump, using in other applications outside of an aquarium. I ordered it and have read the details with second thoughts, especially having other pets that could knock it about and cause shock.

My cat drinks everyday from a lange glas Vase. And i have to clean and change the complete water every 3 days(because some food fell inside). So im surching for a fountain ,and found your awesome Diy.Hope you can help...
He loves it! How long does it keep the water clean? My cat hates his water dish because it gets slimy after a day and I always wash it for him every morning but he still doesn't like it.
It looks really cool and I want to make one, except aren't the plants going to make it nasty and slimy eventually? And then when you clean it do you have to rebuild the whole thing once a month? I think I'll just keep washing two ceramic water bowls and refilling them with Zero Water that I filter myself.
This is so cool :o I'd really like to make one of those too, love your creation! I have a question if that's okay, how do you keep the plants alive & the roots healthy with just water, do you ever get any algae or mould issues?
Nope, but I do change the water when it starts to feel "slimy". As long as the fountain runs to oxygenate the water the plant roots are happy. Some do better than others.
@@ryanlanyi Very helpful, thank you for your reply, my cat always prefers to drink out of dirty puddles or the run off from muddy plant pots despite her crystal clear water inside, filtered water that's also changed (with no soil residue) has to be a better and more appealing option.
Hello. I'd really like to build something like this. Over time does the water start to smell like a normal pet fountain? Obviously it needs to be cleaned. I'm concerned about the porous clay pebbles harboring bacteria. Can you give your thoughts on these concerns? Thanks in advance!
Hi, the plant roots and oxygenization help to keep the water clean but eventually the water will need to be replaced. Once every month or two is a good idea. Kitty will stop drinking from it eventually if you don't. Bacteria wise, not much more than a typical natural water source I'd reckon. Just replace the water often and should be fine. And make sure your pet has an alternate source of water should she find the fountain water unpleasant.
Yeah, I was hesitant to post this video for that reason. Though I researched all the plants I used, I'm not sure all pet owners will be as a thorough. That's why I typically recommend just planting cat grass in the fountain.

Maybe... too much resistance or clogging? Try running pump in just water, if it doesn't run the issue is pump related, if it does, it's the pebbles.
Do you have any idea if the Repto 60 GPH filter will function close enough to your 90? You are a fantastic 😍❤ brother. How about joining our family? 😊🎉🤞
Ah ha! I just found one exactly like yours so we’re good to go. 🎉😊👏👏👏 thank you 🎉🎉👏👏👏😊😊
Glad to hear it!
this is epic so cool
How long do the plants last without any fertilizer?
It’s such a hot summer and I was looking for a simple do it yourself fountain for two of my feral outdoor kitties and I love this I’m gonna make it for them! I wanted to ask you, did you use the full 10 L bag of the clay pebbles on Amazon because I would only use it for this one project should I get one smaller? Thx for sharing!!! Love it!
For a small fountain like mine, small bag would probably work. I use expanded clay in lots of projects so didn't mind a larger bag.
To creator of this clip, have you read the warnings on the Tetra reptile fountain pump, using in other applications outside of an aquarium. I ordered it and have read the details with second thoughts, especially having other pets that could knock it about and cause shock.
So cute! Great idea
Amazing
I love it! How do you clean it? How often?
Wow! This is such a beautiful creation!! I just got a nice ceramic fountain but I have not seen my kitty drink out of it .. he doesn't seem interested. I wonder if I should add some pet safe plants around it. . And if I need to move his food bowl. Subscribed
I recommend starting with cat grass if you are going to add plants. Thanks for subscribing and commenting!
@@ryanlanyi will do!! Off to the pet store now :)
Wow it’s so creative and beautiful 😻
Lucky cat 😺
Very pretty idea. How often do you change the water and how do you clean the filter and the stones on the inside of the bowl? My cat drinks everyday from a lange glas Vase. And i have to clean and change the complete water every 3 days(because some food fell inside). So im surching for a fountain ,and found your awesome Diy.Hope you can help...
I'd say complete water change once a month. Clean the bowl change the filter twice a year should be good.
Great videoo!!!
It looks amazing, but wouldn't the roots grow into the filter through the opening at the bottom?
Maybe eventually!
He loves it! How long does it keep the water clean? My cat hates his water dish because it gets slimy after a day and I always wash it for him every morning but he still doesn't like it.
These fountains stay relatively clean bc of the plant roots and oxygen from the falling water, but water should be changed about every month or so.
It looks really cool and I want to make one, except aren't the plants going to make it nasty and slimy eventually? And then when you clean it do you have to rebuild the whole thing once a month? I think I'll just keep washing two ceramic water bowls and refilling them with Zero Water that I filter myself.
Yeah, a plantless fountain would probably be simpler to keep clean. Might design one myself!
Do you need to change water every so often ?
Yes!
Could I do this bigger with some like guppies or beta??
With adding *
Hi thanks for the tutorial! How often would you have to clean the bowl out and replace the filter?
Probably once a month is a good. Eventually kitty will stop drinking from it if you don't.
How often do you have to clean this? It seems pretty easy to do with this guide, so I think I will give it a go!
The roots will keep the water somewhat clean but probably a fresh water exchange is a good idea about every 60 days.
Does the water recycle back into the filter? From the organic material that the plants are arranged in?
Yes! Water is constantly filtered.
❤
Careful though, some plants we use for decoration can be toxic for cats. But great idea
Yeah, I was hesitant to post this video for that reason. Though I researched all the plants I used, I'm not sure all pet owners will be as a thorough. That's why I typically recommend just planting cat grass in the fountain.
