I built a CAT TREE with a built-in litterbox using branches

  • I built a big cat tree for our cat Pooh and new kitten Wizzie! In this spot were our litter box and recycling bin. I had the idea for a while to build a frame to hide these and it was the perfect spot to add a big tree for the cats to climb in on top. So I thought it was a good idea to film and share the process. They love it so much and spend so much time in there just playing and cuddling.
    I have some plans for an addition with a bridge to a second part, maybe add a little clear dome bed so we can see their cute paws when they sleep in there. I am sure they will love it! Let me know if you like to see me make a second addition.

    One more step she should've done is using a brass washer for each shelf when she was screwing it down from above--it would've added more strength so the screws would not loosen up later on with all the jumping around by her cats. Also use a wider screw for more grip. I have owned several cats in my adult life and am a handyman too in property mgmt, so I do know how to improvise on the fly.

    Just gotta say, I think yours is the best cat-tree playground, because: 1) natural and rustic elements (great aesthetics), 2) sturdy supports, 3) big platforms (2 kitties can snuggle together), 4) great view (I would sit there all day too, if I were cat-sized), 5) space-saving (built over recycling bin and cat bathroom) 😻❤😻 LOVE IT! Yes, cat highway please! 😺👍😺

    Hey Esmee, where can I find branches like that? "Oh, my fiancee is a forest ranger." Oh I see. So you decided not to glue or nail in the rope, but to knot it. "Yeah, I'm a girl scout, so I know a thing or two about knots." Oh. How do you know this is structurally sound? "Yeah, I'm a structural engineer." lol

    Congratulations on a truly great build, really taking into consideration all the things cats like (the sleeping shelves, the crate "cave", the scratching posts, the rope "bridge", the hanging toys, the view out the window and the shady shelf inside looking onto your sitting room), PLUS it looks smashing and it's so practical to have your recycling and the cat loo all in one place. Simply wonderful! I'd like to see any other builds you do for them, especially a "cat highway" into your sitting room. I'll be copying many of your ideas!

      @@EsmeeHeebing -- my two cats have access to a walled garden, so while I do have a big indoor cat tree for them (which has been in use by many cats for almost thirty years now, so it's rather tattered!), I hadn't bothered much because I don't think they needed anything else. I still don't, but your build is so fantastic that it's inspired ME! (hahaha) to do something just because it would be so cool and practical too to have all the cat-related stuff in one central location. I really liked your ideas (especially the fact that you attached it to the wall and made it so sturdy, it's the one thing cats tend to dislike about cat trees I find). Sorry I'm running so long, I'll stop now. When I'm done with my project I'll let you know! 💕😃

    Love the inclusion of the bins and litter box. I was thinking about doing something like this between my kitchen and living room, and adding a trash can like this would be awesome. Currently the can is far away from the kitchen because the spot between the kitchen and living room is the best place, but if I put it there it would end up the focus of the two rooms. This way I'd get the best of both worlds, well placed trash and a nice decoration.

    Awesome! Best tutorial I have seen, that combines the cool tree with the litterbox solution. Great idea to conceal the recycle bins as well! I would probably use that space to hold a bin of food, a bin of fresh cat sand, bags, a scoop, and a bin to take out and scoop the "used sand" into. I would also make the *exit* shaped like a cat's head.

    To get big tree branches just ask a tree trimmer if you can take some when he is trimming. They will be happy to give you some. Then they don't have to chop them up and haul them away. Some trees are better than others- harder wood, more curves, etc. You don't have to have great skills to do this. The easiest tool for cutting the wood is a reciprocating saw, aka "Saws-all". They are less than $100 (US Dollars) and REALLY easy to use (insert blade, pull trigger). Then buy an inexpensive electric drill. For stability you can make a base with a big tub and some instant cement. Set the branches in the cement how you want and let dry. Use screws and rope to tie the branches together for more stability. Have fun!

    Esmee, we love this! How creative. Thank you so much for the very simple, precise tutorial. It’s helping this newbie tremendously. My challenge will be to find the types of branches/wood you did, but “where there’s a will”, as they say.... I’d be very interested in learning about your cat highway. That sounds perfect for our needs. Keep bringing the videos. Thank you.

    Prettiest cat tree ever! I hope some day I'll be able to build something lije this for my three cats. For now I'm going to upgrade some shelves to make it a cat tree, maybe I'll record it like you! Also, beautiful garden. Of course I want to see the cat highway!

    Oh I love this!!! You did such an awesome job on the build! I have an outdoor cat area that my cats go into and I was wanting to do something so they could climb up and have little perches so this is perfect. I'll have to find some big branches and copy what you did. The only thing I'd be worried about though is the string that hangs down my one cat is a trouble maker and totally would get caught up and tangled in that. Would love to see the cat bridge you are going to build.

    • @EsmeeHeebing
      @EsmeeHeebing  3 года назад

      Thank you so much! Yes that would be awesome. You could make the ropes shorter so he can't tangle himself in that. The long rope is really thick and tough so they probably couldn't get tangled in that.

    Great job. I love the natural materials, and you had the perfect spot in the window. How did you make the "rope bridge?" It's that heavier piece of rope connecting two of the branches. Was it braided? I want to try something like this for my cat. Thanks.

    • @EsmeeHeebing
      @EsmeeHeebing  3 года назад +1

      Thank you! It is one piece of rope going across wraping it around the branch on the other side and then when going back you wrap it around the itself. Same way as with a hangmans noose.

    Hi, watching you construct the cat tree was a pleasure then seeing the cats claim it for themselves was amazing! I live up a highrise building with my two cats Coco and Minky whom I adopted 3 yrs ago when they were 12ys old. I am going to put up some shelves and ladders to keep them active. Catch you soon
