  • I'm obsessed with DCU's Titans and the show's approach to Dick Grayson. So I made a video essay breaking down all my thoughts about this version of the character.

    People tend to forget that Dick Grayson, at the core of his character, is an angry obsessive man. It’s because of his training from Batman ESPECIALLY no doubt, but ever since his parents’ death by Tony Zucco, something changed in him. In the comics especially, Koriand’r/Starfire is a crucial component to his rediscovering himself and becoming the more empathetic and charismatic Nightwing.

    I loved this video. One thing I hear a lot of Dick fans criticize is how Dick would never allow himself to do the things that he's doing in Titans. But I really like how your video clarifies that this is really how it would be for a guy in his situation plus your comic references. Yes, it's fiction, but it certainly puts a more realistic spin on it and it works extremely well with his character. Thumbed up.

      Thank you! Yes, it's certainly a more extreme take on the character, but i feel like all of it still has basis in the comics. And Dick has a lot more flaws than fans tend to acknowledge! Its refreshing to see those traits explored.

    Love your analysis, very on point! This is what saddens and frustrates me when I read all the common reviews for Titans „its to dark and broody“ „its gory and and r rated that Maikes it Great“ These reviews dont geht the Heart of the Show and what makes it so great and different from the typical dark DCEU: grounded relatable and realistic Characters! Your analysis captures this perfectly so Thank you!

      I feel like Titans' tone works where the darker DCEU movies dont because it invests so much in the characters. Like you said, it has heart!

    I never really thought of that, how he is usually lighter, more loose, and optimistic around Batman to like balance themselves out, and he’s darker when with the Titans. Cool insight.

    I really enjoyed the show. I feel that Dick's transition from Robin to Nightwing isn't given enough screen time, if any (I haven't seen BTAS or New Adventures of the Batman so I'm not going to speak for that).
    This show is giving us the slow deterioration of Robin into Nightwing, and I love it. I really hope it gets a second season.

      as frustrating and messy as this show can be, it continues to give me the Dick Grayson content that pretty much every other part of DC has given up on. He's basically non-present in the comics right now, the animated movies never portray him as very competent. At the very least, it's nice to see something that actually seems invested in his character and shows the potential the Robins have for compelling narratives.

    Wow! I discovered this video just now and want to say: Thank you! This is such a good breakdown of Dick's characterization in the show as well as of how the show works in general. I love Nightwing, he might be my favorite male DC hero. I love him in the comics, where he's different than in DCU Titans, but I also love him in Titans. I tried to explain to a coworker why I enjoy this show so much and why I guess that it is not only enjoyable but also an important milestone for superhero shows. I didn't find such good words as you did in your video. But after watching it I will re-open this discussion for sure! :)

    The sense of when not knew much about this character and about Titans in principle, but thank you, that now I know more. Many criticized this show for what it ended oberwallis... I myself was disappointed by with this ending, but I like this show. Like the tone that the creators picked up. But yes, of course the Titans are the disadvantages of me but they did not stop to enjoy it. I watched 2 parts of "The Tradegy of DC Titan's" from HiTop Films maybe you know him. And he said that this show is bad in everything, but I do not agree with this. This show has its moments, some of which no instance in which show on the CW. 110% agree with everything you said. I couldn't have explained it so well. Titans Dick has the most compelling and genuinely good characterization and every episode, I feel like this is gonna end, it's too good to be consistent, and I'm proven wrong every time. I couldn't be happier about that. Gotta admit, last year when I knew Dick from fanon and cartoons..the out-of-context pages and the newer comics, more than I knew about all his traumas and his darkness, this angsty dude was not who I expected to meet and I didn't like it. But I kept watching. And...the editing sometimes makes it pretty hard for me to focus on the characterization. But..now.... season 2.... he's been so good. SO good. I've literally cried because of how unexpectedly well written he is. I need more now, I need Titans Dick in fanfiction, in fanon. He's criminally underused.
    I have my issues with the show like the pacing, the dialogues, the vfx, the lighting, the crude editing...the way some other characters are treated etc. But it's... still one of my most favorite shows and I'm also going to continue watching.
    Also, thank you for talking about this!

    • @CautiousAmber
      @CautiousAmber  4 года назад

      THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!
      Aha I completely agree about the editing. 💦 Which is a shame because I think the shows cinematography and framing is GORGEOUS, and the editing and heavy handed post production really hinders that. But I give a lot of stuff a pass because I know they dont have much of a budget & theres still a lot of inventive work going into the visuals despite it.
      But yes, while being a deeply flawed show, the way they're handling Dick's characterization is beyond my wildest dreams. I was definitely where you were irt fanon Dick a few years ago. Seeing him more as the light hearted and funny one of the BatFam. Comics are difficult to get into, especially for a character with nearly eighty years of history. It's understandable that fanon has drifted so far from canon.
      But after reading a ton of comics and really getting deeply invested in the meta of his character, I went into this show with pretty low expectations. I didnt expect an adaptation that not only respected and understood him, but allowed him to be complicated, flawed, and hUMAN. (while also competent and badass ?!) I watched every episode of season one terrified that tHIS would be the episode that ruined him or slipped up. But I continued to be blown away by the incredible character arc he was being given. And season two is only expanding on that! I'm so in love with how much this show is obsessed with laying bare his every mistake, every fuck up, every reason he acts the way he does. Exploring his trauma but never being free from the repercussions of his actions. Backing him into a corner of his own guilt and self loathing and then offering him a way forward through his new family. aaAAAHH I LOVE IT.
      So yeah, Titans definitely has a lot of issues, but its clumsy and earnest in a way I find endlessly charming. And its giving me the Dick Grayson story I always wanted and never thought I'd see.
      + also I think I DOES capture a lot the traits fanon loves too. He's compassionate, a leader, holds himself to unfairly high standards, self sacrificing to a fault, clearly has that older bro/dad energy cuz he keeps adopting every kid he meets, hes even got a nice dry sense of humor that I'm really enjoying!!

    Love seeing character meta like these. You are so right how beautifully flawed the whole series is but like you, I love it anyways. I think Titans is the superhero series that is truly invested in its characters, the powers, the costumes, the big backstories are just parts to build up these characters. When other superhero stories are more concentrated on plot or the next big-bad, I feel that Titans is really one of the few that truly likes it's own characters and have plans to see them grow.
    As messy as Titans is, like you've touched upon, I think the series is going to show character growth from darkness to light, where Dick Grayson becomes the more well-adjusted character we are familiar with.

      @@CautiousAmber Definitely! For me it's hoping they would improve in giving a bit more emotional dept and screen time to Kory and Gar. I was a bit disappointed in the first season. Though both of them where just as much leads as Dick and Rachel, they simply did not have the same amount of back stor as Dick and Rachel. Even Kory's name ep was kinda dedicated to Rachel. And it becomes more apparent when both Kory and Gar are characters played by people colour, and getting the short end of the stick. Thanks for replying tho!

    This was a really good video. Well paced and edited and you construct your arguments very well.
    I agree with you on most points, especially what you said about Dick Grayson's character. I've never been much of a DC fan myself. Nothing against them, they have written some fantastic comics, I just never connected with any of the characters (same reason I never really liked Harry Potter. Great books, I just never connected with the main three).
    The one exception to this is the affectionately named 'Bat Family' or more specifically the four main Robins. I love their interactions with each other and especially with Bruce and Batman (because they are two different entities). He is effectively their father and in some canonical cases literally. But he can't give them a normal life. I love all the Robins but my favourite is Dick Grayson.
    You are right that the live action adaptations drop the ball when it comes to this aspect of the comics. I understand why. Genuinely talented child actors do exist but they are extremely rare. That added with Dick's (and the other Robins') exceptional physical ability and it is very hard to do a good live action bat family story.
    I would kill for a show that tackles these issues. I thought I had found it in Titans. I too can stand poor quality in a TV show if I love the characters so I was SO ready to love this show. The problem is, the guy on screen is not Dick Grayson (I know we haven't seen much of Jason but I don't really see him either). Dick has been built for years as this ray of hope style character, someone who always hopes for better and tries to see the good in people. Look at any other iteration. He is exceptionally chatty and incorrigible. (The one thing wrong with Batman: The Animated Series is that through the writing and the bad voice acting of the guy who played Dick, this came off as sooooooooo annoying. and that is one of the reasons I didn't fall in love with him until MUCH later into my dive into the comics.)
    Much like any other poorly lit, DC small screen show he is every other dark, brooding, joyless character in the genre. I barely see him crack a joke or even smile in the first five episodes (after which I gave up). You can tackle Dick's trauma and pain without taking away every personality trait he has.
    Not that I'm seeking to remove your enjoyment of this show. If you liked it that's great and I guess I didn't give them enough credit for tackling something not even the comics tackle as often as is probably warranted.
    I look forward to seeing what you tackle next. :)

    • @CautiousAmber

      Hey! Thank you so much for taking the time to write out this comment. I totally understand that this show isn't going to be for everyone, it definitely has its shortcomings and flaws. But I still think its doing a lot of good in showing that Dick can be a character through which a lot of different types of stories are told and that he's not as limited as the general audience was lead to believe due to previous live action mishandlings.
      Titans!Dick isn't going to be the version of the character that appeals to everyone. To me, he still feels like Dick Grayson because he reminds me strongly of his 2003 Outsiders run. That Dick Grayson was isolated and didn't know how to deal with the trauma of losing Donna, and he did a lot of things he normally wouldn't. He was pretty joyless and insisted everyone handle their problems on their own. That era is a pretty good example of how badly he can respond to a deep personal trauma and how caught up he can get in it until someone with more sense comes along to shake him out of it. In Titans, hes responding to a different trauma, but in a similar way. I guess in that way, it still feels like a genuine and respectful interpretation of the character.

    • @justlisten203
      @justlisten203 5 лет назад +1

      Yeah I totally get what you are saying. I guess no-one ever falls in love with a character, they fall in love with a VERSION of that character. I guess I just loved Dick Grayson so much because I saw him as a spark of joy in what I see to be quite a grey universe (i.e. DC) it's another reason that, while I didn't LOVE Wonder Woman I enjoyed it a lot more because it could be serious without being broody.
      But looking at it from your point of view I can see that there are quite a few important aspects of his character they not only kept but are focusing on. Like how gentle and caring he can be. Bruce cares by imposing himself and withdrawing himself when HE believes the situation requires it. Dick is the opposite, he is there when others need him.
      Interesting comment on the unreliable narrator by the way. I guess that is another reason I love the bat family more than the batman. He is always more interesting to me through the eyes of others.
      Also I am ready and willing to retract my comment on Jason. After posting it I realised that I hadn't actually seen Jason in a full episode. I had just seen some clips on youtube. (like I said I stopped at episode 5) So I am watching episode 6 right now and let me tell you I LOVE Jason. I realised that I made a poor assumption because my main view of Jason's character is his rage (my favourite DC animated movie by the way is Under the Red Hood). But this is Jason as Robin. A cocky, chirpy, balsy kid who is so different from Dick and yet fits with him perfectly. Another thing I am sad about is that we don't get to see those two interact in the comics that much. Seeing that, alone makes this episode worth the watch. I also love the adorable hint of hero worship he has for Dick.
      I will say, if this show had a main focus on the two of them forming a relationship I would be in for the long run. Sadly though (for me at least) it's just a bright spot in what is still a poor show. I guess I mostly feel that way because it is fairly joyless. I am sick and tired of DC's joylessness. And I am NOT saying that they have to turn themselves into marvel because there are so many ways to be fun without being marvel. It could tackle all these great issues and still be fun. Episode 6 was fun just on the merit of Jason alone (which does say something positive) but I have to say, "It you're not having fun, why bother?"
      Just one little thing I noticed in your video; are you reading off a script? Because your eyes keep shifting to your right. Either that or it is just a nervous thing. My eyes do that too when I talk. I know learning lines is hard but it is always more compelling if you maintain eye contact with the camera. It makes the audience feel more like you are talking to them.
      Once again, great job. Thanks for helping me see merit in a show I had pretty much written off. I don't plan to return but I do feel better about it now. xx @@CautiousAmber

      @@justlisten203 honestly, thank you so much for these thoughtful responses. I made this video hoping that even people that dont like the show could see it as a valid version of the character. For me, the show feels like it succeeds in the "dark" DCEU themes where the movies fail because it actually invests in its characters. And I personally love "dark" angsty stories as long as the characters are complex and have underlying warmth. Luckily superheroes are so popular right now, we really can be picky about the exact type of stories we want to consume. And that's awesome! Its extra cool that theres currently multiple versions of Dick Grayson to choose from. (YJ, Titans, DCAU)
      Episode 6 is my favorite episode by far. Jason's time as Robin has be skipped over so much, I was DELIGHTED to see it actually presented in live action. He and Dick's dynamic was perfect. I went into the episode worried Dick would be mean to him, but was surprised to see how much he clearly knew he couldnt take his anger at Bruce out on this kid & instead just tried to get Jason to see his side.
      I didnt write a script for the video but I wasnt reading off of it while recording. I just tend to look to the side when I talk. 🤭 I'll keep that in mind for future videos!

    • @justlisten203
      @justlisten203 5 лет назад +1

      No problem. I love this kind of thing. It's so interesting to see different points of view.
      Though my dislike for the 'dark' kind of media is not the dark character, more the general colourless atmosphere. For me it kind of makes it feel like the world isn't really alive. I know a lot of that is to with asthetic but a lot of it is to do with writing too. The ending battle in Civil War was dark as all hell but it felt so alive and raw and filled with colour. So I honestly don't mind dark characters or dark story lines (I actually love them) it just seems to be the whole general feeling that DC gives me.
      Anyway, this will be my last comment (on this video anyway ;)) because if I keep going I know I will be here all night.
      One more major confession before I punch out. I guess the thing that really left me hurting after this series was the lack of effort they put in to casting Dick Grayson's perfect backside. I mean come on, it's practically entered comicbook legend at this point ;) @@CautiousAmber

    Still, the show itself was kinda Rush. I still belive a 22 episodes would have work better than what we got...
    One of the things that I like about Dick is his Charisma. I get your point and what the Show is, well, showing us, and I still see parts of Dick in this version, but idk... There is just something missing... As in comics, from all the times we saw Dick defeated, I wish in the 3rd Season he gets out 100% from the darkness so we can see our Optimistic, Empatic and Funny beloved Dick Grayson 💕
    What I loves and see about Dick Grayson/Nightwing is that he is like the perfect balance between what Superman and Batman represents, is like the perfect middle without being actully perfect. Because you can see how many times Dick had fail, we have seen him at his worst, defeated, in Comics too. But what he has, is that, even when he is down, even when he is running trying to escape, he always finds his way back at the end.
    (and recently we had him back again. Hahaha xD **Cries in Rick Grayson ;-;**)

      Yes!! That's exactly what I love too. It's kinda unfair that hes often treated like he doesnt have issues or trauma because hes usually presented as being more emotional adept. Or even setting his problems aside for the sake of others. So it's cool to have at least one piece of media really focus on his mental state.

    Wow good video. While it gave me a different spin on dick in the titans universe I still have problems. Not to say I still don’t like him I just think towards the end he was handled poorly. Especially with the episode being cut. But I think my main problem derives from 2 scenes. The first being donna Troy’s photography party. I feel like it makes sense because he’s isolating himself but I think the scene should be split into 2 parts. The first where he’s having awful social skills. Donna comes and tells him to relax and have fun. We cut to the train scene and when we come back dick is having a wonderful time. This would show the audience that when dick relaxes and doesn’t isolate himself he can have a great time. He sees Donna leave and that whole thing happens. My second problem is the ending. Dick is 100% smarter than they played them out to be in the 11th episode. I think in this episode he should’ve used his detective skills and the end figured out that this wasn’t his reality. He notices certain changes throughout the episode but doesn’t really think about them too hard until the end. Take a standing above Batman gun in his hand. Batman says kill me. They close up the gun or he’s hesitating he can’t seem to pull the trigger. He shakes his head. I-I can’t says dick. That thing that pushes you to finish the mission and matter the cost I don’t have it in me Bruce. There’s still hope for you. All the sudden reality warps and Batman has a gun in his hand he pointed up a dick. Dick yells no and he shoots the gun out of Batman’s hand. What is this. Where am I asks dick. He wakes up in the living room raven on the floor next to beastboy and ravens mom and trigon standing next to each other. Impossible says trigon. The rest of the team bursts in the front door. Starfire, Wondergirl, Hawk and dove are all standing behind him. Trigon backs up. Each has their special weapon out. It doesn’t matter says trigon. You can’t stop- raven cuts him off blasting him with her powers in the back. Trigon says we need to leave and teleports away with Rachel’s evil mom. Beastboy asks if he’s gone and dick responds with for now. StarFire asks if their team now and dick says I guess you could call it that. Boom bata bing cut to black and that’s how I’d fix dick in 2 scenes

    • @CautiousAmber
      @CautiousAmber  5 лет назад

      Hey! Thank you so much! I totally get where you're coming from with the two scenes but I think I disagree with the first one. Dick in Titans is shown to be exceptionally broken, his trauma and issues run deep, and just some advice from Donna to have fun wouldn't result in that dramatic of a change. Dick is a performer, yes, he likes having a role to play. But we see over and over that he has no idea what that role needs to be, its his entire struggle. I don't think we'll see him truly comfortable in his own skin until Nightwing happens. I think the Donna Troy episode does a fantastic job at showing a different side of him with someone he's comfortable with, in a way thats still consistent with what we've learned about him so far.
      I did avoid talking about the 11th episode in the video, not necessarily because i didn't like it but because I find it very hard to have a solid opinion on it until I get the context of the next episodes. I'm not as upset as others about where the season was ended, because I knew season 2 was already happening. Trigon is an insanely powerful villain, and even then he has to personally step in to push Dick in the direction he wanted. I like that Dick's road to recovery isn't linear, that there's still deep issues that a demon could take advantage of. But we still haven't seen what happens next, so I cant yet say what the impact will be on his arc & if i think it works. I know I'll probably have to make a second video after season 2 though. ^^

      Thanks for replying it great to see a response. I actually started a video essay on this topic. I agreed that some advice from Donna wouldn't change the fact of dick having a hard time in a social environment so I got him a little drunk in my rewrite too. I still can't wait to see the second season and wish they wouldn't have cut the 12th episode from the first season. My theory is it had them defeating trigon and the producers simply didn't want that yet. Doom Patrol is what's giving me hope because from a film critics perspective the show was awful I did enjoy it. Again thanks for responding!

    • @CautiousAmber
      @CautiousAmber  5 лет назад

      No problem!! Yes, i definitely think they wanted to reshoot some things so that they didn't wrap up too many plot points in season one. I can't wait for season two & as my friend said "Titans walked so Doom Patrol could run" so I have a lot of optimism for the future.

      Recovery isnt a linear path, i enjoyed his back and forth struggle as it showed just conflicted he is. If he too easily made a desicion, I think it would undercut the depth of his trauma.

    • @CautiousAmber
      @CautiousAmber  5 лет назад +1

      @@kangaroo3708 I'm honestly withholding judgment of the finale until I see the the next episode, because I think the context of the resolution is important. The back and forth with Rachel very much felt to me like an example of the deep conflict between wanting to help a child & Dick feeling like hes so broken that he'll inevitably drag Rachel into the type of life he resents. It would be morally irresponsible of him to blame Bruce so intensely for the childhood trauma he experienced while also playing his own part in training Rachel the same way. He feels like he not capable of preventing it. Hence constantly attempting to find a better place for her. He doesnt go about it the right way (a microcosm of his entire struggle) but I see his reasoning. Pacing was a real issue with the writing, which made it harder to see clearly, but not a problem with the actions themselves.

      I'd love to see her get good live action content! I'm not sure if Titans is the right show for it because it is already going to be so crowded with other characters (who are actually Titans), but it would be amazing if some sort of Gotham centric spin off show happened. They've established so much about the BatFam it wouldnt be hard. But with all the movie rumors who knows of theyd be able to ,,, : (
