Lazy Tutorials for Lazy People.
Animating with displacement maps! My second favorite kind of animating.
This tutorial is made for Blender, which is free to download at Blender.org
Now my moths can follow the fish I created.
Moths and Fish have the strongest Bond of Friendship in the animal kingdom.
@@IanHubert2 Love you man!
A moth walks into a podiatrists office
moths would make fishes look real
Sounds realistic to me
1 minutes tutorial , I need like 2 minutes to decide whether delete the default cube or not.
lol , same
Now that was funny
Takes me about an hour to get through some of these XD
Be all of you are on like 0.25 speed watching this lol
another five to re-add the cube
Now I want an animated fish race on a road made out pipes in a post apocalyptic city. Also moths.
you forgot the papers flying everywhere
with human particles rolf
Moths make everything more realistic.
Now I have images of fish swimming in a sunken water park. A ship above the park full of humans aimlessly wondering on the deck carrying cell phones and moths swarming around.
Thanks. :)
@TechnicalTortuga maybe the guy who built the air conditioner wouldn't be exact, think about it.
0:23 that subtle noise change is everything to me
Fish add realism to anything.
Want to model a nebulae? *F I S H*
expect tons of fish posts in blender subreddit soon..
I wish I could up vote and give you karma
lmao too real that place is wack
Now I can finally make the sequel to Finding Dory by myself. Thanks IanHubert, very cool.
Are you done yet?
@@LordDuckoo lmao bro
Is the sequel done?
Can honestly say I've never clicked so fast!
@IanHubert btw, could you use any help working on Dynamo? Or are you keeping it "in the family" so to speak?
@@Fuffuloo AH! That's very kind of you! At this point I think I'm okay- but I'll let you know! I'm really excited to get back into it. I've got some big gigs I gotta wrap up, but then that's my next project.
@@IanHubert2 Thanks for the reply! Sounds good, my dude; I am anxiously looking forward to the next episode!!
Btw if you decide you would like help after all, I'm pretty experienced with After Effects and DaVinci Resolve. With Blender I'm more in the learning phase but I would still be willing to help out with blendering if I can!
@@IanHubert2 Are you a pro or you don't know ev4erything about blender yet bec3ause you hav4e am7az1ing skills
I literally animated a school of fish this week. Damn, that would have been a lot easier
dont let the material artist fool you into animating with displacements
@@theshuman100 What do you even mean? I'm so dumb
Im over here using rigs or lattice like a fool...Bet you can do even more with curve mod

😱 *Hardworking?!!*
🤣🤣🤣
Dangit, my attention span is only one minute!
im always shocked of your easy ways to do defcult stuff ♥ God bless you man
Step 1: Animate Fish in Blender
Step 2: Take them all to Grandma so she can finally accept you.
Step 3: Realize that grandma has been dead for a decade.
Step 4: Render a Big Ol Grandma in Blender.
And add moths to make her real.
With this animation?
Y e s
not with the displacement!
I didn’t know the application was called Blender so I was expecting to watch an animation about fish being turned into smoothies.
Hahaha. That would be a unique taste. Blood guts, bones. Would be unique flavor smoothy.
I Cannot believe how much I learn from watching these tutes! amazing and hilarious
love your lazy tutorials bcz whenever i watch long tutorials i feel super sleepy
i added MOTHS to my imaginary girlfriend and she became REAL... "MOTHS add realism to anything"
so i guess now i will add FISH to her house to impress her??

Thanks for the belly laugh, chief.

But then, she is a seasoned blenderer as well, whole 2 years in before you even deleted your first cube.
I got really excited to animate fish in a blender... But this is good too.
Are you able to make modeling hair look easy?
Ian Hubert: *Challenge Accepted!!* 🔥
This. My fish look shiny and all, but they still lack fur.
He can make ANYTHING look easy, haha
this. Please for the love of god this

Another cool trick.... In just one minute. You are a pro.
wow it's perfect
seriously love these tutorials man, keep em coming, I can't get enough

It took me about 3 hours to replicate this animation, but it was worthwhile... 🙂👍
I have finally impressed my grandma and said she won't disown me now.
Thank you.
Before I watched the video: No idea how to impress my grandma
After video: The best grandson
Thanks so much for this series Ian, it made me remember how fun blender is. Time reinstall blender I guess
Fun fact, in the game "Abzû", where you have upwards of like 500 fishes at once in your screen, all moving around, THIS is the basic way in which they done it.
They created very low-poly models of fishes, and they animated their movements with moving displacements rather than bones, because it takes way less processing power to animated them.
They then also worked some programming magic to "blend" different "swooshes" together and how the fish actually behaves.
The end result is pretty outstanding. :)
3D models not super upclose can be so much simpler than people think. Ian really opened up so many possibilities. Because in Uni you only learn the AAA Qualilty perfect quad topo workflow ... which is such a pain in the ass and only worth it if you see it even in the end
why is this guy so hard to find, it sucks that you only get a two hours tut that goes through every single click whenever you google anything while this great guy exists lol
Exactly. Showing every click is annoying when the clicks change with each new version of Blender anyway 😂
I just revisited this tutorial to make a video at work in 3.5, the tutorial was still as good as new.
Even though these are just a minute long, it seems you put a lot of soul into them. You are doing Gods work, keep it up.
WHAT THE HECK!
YOU MADE THE FISH LOOKS TOO EASY TO BE MODELLED!!!!
Haha! It was a bit of a pain, actually- like, you could get away with basically an extruded silhouette if you're doing distant background fish, but yeah, getting a good fish shape good for closeups takes a little finagling.
i mean, it is
@@IanHubert2 mate, I can't believe you've done this again, I'm still suprised on how easy it is for you to model a certain object. So I knew that Expert always know the Shortcut when they want to model random stuff
bro. please do not quit with these. not only are they absolutely hilarious, but they are legitimately helpful.
Now make them a particle and teach them to love
I've finally figured it out--your voice is 50% Rick and 50% Morty!!
Now, i will never unhear this. 😅
This series is genuinely one of the most helpful resources for blender
wow, that cloud texture as animation really is 'lazy' 👌
Dude. Thank you. The commentary, the visuals, the humor. Everything. You’re worth more than your weight in gold

These are the best tutorials hands down - swoopy
Literally any 3D animator in industry : we need to make bones to animate it.
Him : let's use modifiers.
Never gonna stop watching these lazy tutorials, you and CGMatter are the most useful people alive for any Blender user.
"she'll finally be impressed" you know, as a full psych major, I can't help but notice this very SPECIFIC sentence. You have some feelings about your rich grandma?
I attempted to make a swimming fish in my first 3D design class in high school. This guy just blew away what took me many weeks to do in a matter of minutes. Nice!
Do autodesk users have content like this? I DON'T THINK SO
Muad'dib you can do this in any 3D package, if you only watch blender content you'll only learn 1% of what you could learn if you don't care about the software.

You are all missing the joke. I use more programs than just blender and enjoy watching informative videos. But this new trend of fast tutorials is exclusive to blender :P
I almost laughed at the swooshes and how simple it is! GOOD JOB!
0:20 *and that completes the "fish from chernobyl" tutorial!*
Using the displace modifier to give the fish some motion is so genious! Again, another amazingly informative video in such a short time
"Put em in the rich grandma's house!" :DD
YOU ARE THE GOD OF THE BLENDER! MORE TUTORIALS SO PLEASE
i don't have rich grandmas house... could you make a tutorial?
I just finished doughnut and anvil tutorial. and I just discovered your channel and going through all your vids one by one instead of studying for my exams tomorrow.
"She will finally be impressed"
Now im sad :c
I really love your tutorials, most tutorials out there are mostly for beginners doing the same things. I hope more people do intemediate to advance levels of tutorials.
Sorry, I just have to ask... Are you an actual genius?
These are my favorite (and the most helpful) blender tutorials of all time.
My grandma kicked my out of my house when I did that
Maybe I threw in real fish 🤔
Well doesn't matter now
lol the choice of sound for the bloated fish (or should i say, fosh) was perfect!
Hmmmm wondering if i use EVERY SINGLE lazy tutorial, would it create a good scene for a vid ?
A car chase through an apocalypse with crowds of zombies and moths around every light source and posters on every wall, ending in an overall filled with fish. Make sure the cars kick up lots of paper as they drove by.
It has never been so easy to have a bunch of fishes. Easy peasy! A great tutorial! Congratulations and thank you for sharing it.
Can you give me rich grandmas house? I can't finish the tutorial because of that
Your Lazy Tutorials are the only thing that keep me into 3d
Cuz I've used to think that everything is so complicated
And now I try to oversimplify everything like you do
Your so creative :o ... Your problem solving skills are insane
I used to hate Blender but these tutorials are so good that i makes we me want to just go and "Blend"
Like seriosly though, Great job. Easy to follow and fun!
Dude, this is legit the most informative tutorial channel I've seen in a while.
I live for the displaced fish sound
Dude I can't tell you how much more I would've gotten done in the past month had I known "project from view" was a thing, goddamn it, thank you
Yes!!!!! It's like, "oh yeah just slap the texture on there like that bam done." And you can still tweak it in the UV editor if you want. It's great
You're probably the funniest dude on RUclips. These Lazy Tutorials are so damn good.
I really enjoy this guy tutorials.
I love these tutorials so much! it makes me sad that they're so short, so I just watch them on loop a few times.
This is impressive! Noise textures never sease to impress me!
I love the aspect ratio of this video. And the content isn't bad either.
That’s inspiring! Who would have thought of these techniques to animate a fish? Amazing!
by far the funniest tutorial I have seen out of you so far
I haven't even touched Blender but I love these videos
Thank you for flashing that title at the beginning, someone on tiktok stole it & posted without credit. I was able to find you easy
A beautiful tutorial. An ode to the masters that have come before. I did not expect to find such an exquisite specimen here. Mauths!!!
Somehow you fit the best tutorial I’ve ever seen into a minute.
Jesus, this turns out so much better than I expected.
Still screensaver level animation but it's that premium screensaver animation you had to pay 15 bucks for in 1997.
This is exactly what I needed. This is so much easier than I thought.... Our teacher explained this so extremely confusing... Now I can finally not feel like I have the IQ of a burnt toast.
Please don't ever stop making these! I am learning so much and it's funny at the sale time and it's so quick. No stupid "hey guys today we're going to blabla hit that bell bla bla subscribe bla" You're the favourite teacher I never had
I loved these kind of tutorials quick, humorous and easy to learn.
As always, you just nailed it.
jesus i learn more from these 1 minute videos than i do in entire developer videos.
I'm not even an animator or something but hell this is kind of a content that I enjoyed. Subscribed~
Really cool that you take a workflows and find unique solutions with it. Many Thanks.
Trying not to sound like a bot here but, LOVE THIS CHANNEL.
Quickly becoming one of my favourite 'edutainment' channels on RUclips 🙏🏽
These tutorials are exremally short and extremally great!
I have fallen love with ur videos now I want to master this
I watched lot of tutorial but you are genius Ian sir ...❤️ love from India
This is the funniest thing I've seen in months and idk why
You‘re a genius. A creative mind with a lot of heart & humor. Whats better than that ❤️
I was having a rough day at work and you put a smile on my face. Thank you for the swoopy fish, sir! Hope your rich grandma wills you all her money!
These are the best videos on the internet
What a legend.
I didn't even know you could animate with a texture.
Like seriously.. Would have never imagined when the program asks me how something moves to respond with slapping it's face with a picture or random squiggles and say like dat.
As a casual viewer this is very cool.
But part of me is sad that you didn't make an animation of fish...in a blender
I like the commentary here, brilliant minds with a touch of genuine comedy. You people do know these one minute tutorials are exactly like advertisements. Ian is indirectly, maybe unintentionally, selling BLENDER 2.8 by cleverly inspiring interest. I think he should be reported to the Blender Foundation. 😀
I'm always excited when I see a new video thumbnail from this channel :D
