The autumnal fade out was a delight both musically and visually. You take these instruments to their extreme through musicality, science and experimentation, and that is what absorbs me the most. Thank you, Dr Nim...and I love the cat cameos !
@simonsample341 I really appreciate the feedback! I need to go back and listen to this. I also have a library of all of the uncut synth audio for the videos on here. I need to try to make some favorite clips and samples and try to organize them🤔.
Thanks for the great tutorial. FYI... The midi notes that I use to program my Volca Drum to my Beatstep Pro are: 60 - C4 - Part 1 62 - D4 - Part 2 64 - E4 - Part 3 65 - F4 - Part 4 67 - G4 - Part 5 69 - A4 - Part 6
Horrid Gamer I really appreciate this comment! It’s gotten me thinking a lot about why that’s the case. I guess it’s just that FM synthesis is really good at doing a lot of different sounds. That and the Drum’s overall architecture. Thanks a lot checking it out👍🏻!
This is excellent. Thanks for all of the time and effort you put into making these videos. They're both educational and inspiring. (Commented too soon - that piece at the end is fantastic!)
scott sturgis Thanks🙏🏼! You’re welcome! It means a lot to me that people such as yourself are getting something out of the effort (and letting me know). ps making that last part was so different from the rest - drawing the control curves in Live - a lot of fun!
Love that mini jam you did with the microfreak.. I'm tempted now to get the volca drum to use with my microfreak.. Your videos are always so inspiring.. Many thanks..
richard irons You’re welcome, and thank you for the feedback🙏🏼! I was particularly happy with that pairing - they seemed to blend together quite naturally.
I picked up a volca drum a few days ago. I spent this afternoon binging all your videos on the subject. You’re so cool! Thanks for the sick demos. I need more toys now.
Really, really enjoying these tutorials, you have an excellent teaching manner... I bought a Volca drum a couple of weeks ago and this has been very useful. The Volca is a lot of fun... instant gratification, but also a lot of depth. Money well spent!
@@undulations Yes, for £130 it's crazy good. As well as all the really great stuff on using it as a drum machine, you've really opened up my eyes on its possibilities as a straight up sound design machine as well!
jibberer Really glad to hear that! Make sure to check out my “Jamuary” compilation video on here for another Volca Drum thing that is not “standard usage” (chords in step jump mode; had not really figured this concept out when i made this video series). You can find that clip using the timeline in the video description👍🏻.
@@undulations Will do! These are my first steps outside a DAW for almost 15 years! I bought a Behringer Crave as well and am getting a bit tempted with the Behringer 303 clone... they are absurdly good value!
Hello, thé way you answer thé questions in the commentaires is wonderfull,,, i love your vidéos and i thank u for your work, your patience and kindness,,, bye
Thank you for your time! Great video. I am using a Roland Mc 707 to control/sequence a volca drum, fm and keys. The problem is I have to sequence the drum through a tone track which makes the drum unintuitive to sequence.
Thank you for checking it out🙏! So, I don't have any MC gear - is a tone track basically sending out MIDI notes? It is a struggle, and I don't understand why if Korg made it with 2 midi modes then there can't be a 3rd mode that takes actual midi pitch values and tunes the Volca notes accordingly? Anyway, I've done some stuff over on Instagram to try to deal with this, basically using custom computer code to allow the Korg SQ1 sequencer to sequence the Volca Drum. Not sure if that would be any help in this case those. Thanks again!
Alwin Van der Linde I think that sounds like a great idea. I’ve been planning to do a couple of videos on the Koma Elektronik Field Kit boxes next, but after that🤔. It’s crazy that I haven’t done a Digitakt video, given that it’s one of my very favorites😀!
I love the volca drum & I was wondering if you’ve figured out a work around for this: I want to control the drum with an external sequencer but use the volcas motion capture feature to modulate parameters. However to enable motion capture the drum must be recording and unless the pattern has no variations all of the different hits will be recorded and soon the sequencer is cluttered with overlapping patterns. Any suggestions?
I have an m audio modi keyboard the volca drum and 2 synths a DSI mopho and a behringer neutron. Neither synth has a 3.5 synchronization input. What's the easiest ans best order to connect them to the volca drum?
Hi, I don't have a Neutron or a Mopho, but here are some thoughts. The Drum has no MIDI out or thru, only in, so it has to be last. The Neutron has USB, so I'm figuring if you were using a DAW it should go first, but with the keyboard (I don't have that either) you could probably put the Neutron or the Mopho first. Mopho probably has to be set to midi thru mode for either case. And then you should debate the midi mode on the Drum (single channel vs split channel). If your keyboard has pads then split mode might be okay (would take setting of the pad midi channels). Does the keyboard have midi out or is it usb only? If usb out only then i think keyboard to laptop (daw) and then laptop to neutron by usb, then midi out/thru of neutron into mopho, thru mopho and into volca. Hope this helps a little!
Hi and thanks for your channel..... I have a volca drum, micro freak and minibrute2 which I am struggling to sync.... I have managed to sync the microfreak to the drum but faster rates crash the freak, and only the first note of freak sequences are triggered by the drum.... any advice you have to offer would ensure my eternal devotion.... with love from Wales ✌️
Sure, happy to try! First, to clarify, does it work correctly at low rates? is it always just the first note (at any rate) or only at fast rates? when you say crash, the freak literally locks up or shuts down, has to be rebooted? are you syncing by midi or by the sync/clock jacks? Stuff to try. if you are syncing then the sync settings might help, in the Drum's global settings (as per manual) or down in the MF utility menu. also, i guess make sure the freak can play fast enough on its own (if you haven't already), just in case it's some native issue. another possibility is to change the device "in charge" see if it helps to go the other way. as for midi, it might be possible to set stuff up how you want? maybe freak to brute to volca? sounds like you just want timing on the Drum, not notes or such. There is likely a way to do that by choosing the Drum's midi mode and channel (see Drum's midi implementation chart). Anyway, hope this helps, let me know how it goes👍🏻.
Undulations thanks for your kind response. I will try your suggestions but to answer your questions... I am trying to sync with jacks from the freak clock to the drum input. And yes the freak "locks up" and I have to disconnect and reboot.....
It does work at low bpm on single notes and simple arps.... but any sequence crashes it... not sure if this is more about bpqn rates.... it's all Greek to me 😉✌️
@@lolwalters2936 Well, I feel like the sync stuff flat out crashing it is a problem with the MF system itself. Is yours uodated, just in case it's a known issue? Another thought is to see if you can sync it fast from the brute (as using Aturia gear to crash Arturia gear is a more clear cut problem).
I picked up a Volca Drum, my first ever synth, several weeks ago. This series has be really interesting and informative. Thanks! Also thumbs up for not over soliciting like/subscribe, and for your knowledgeable content sans know-it-all posture. Quick question. This week I added a secondhand Monologue. Does the synch connection only set the tempo, or should it also synch the start of program playback? Mine seems to just synch the tempo.
Sorry I've taken forever to reply. One thing you can try is: Synth 1 sync out -> Synth 2 sync in, but then put a dummy (dangling) aux cable into Synth 1 sync in. Then press play on both (nothing should happen), and then start synced playback on both by pulling the "ripcord". Kinda wonky but I've used it a lot👍🏻
Really informative and inspiring, as always, for a newbie like myself. It's a shame the Drum isn't designed to respond to midi pitch signals because its tone designing possibilities are huge. I liked the Microfreak groove a lot! Thanks for making the vid.
Hey, thanks a lot for checking it out🙏🏼 Not sure if you saw, but my latest video has a clip in it about using an external sequencer with the Drum. I did it with some custom computer code (but can share and give details if that's of interest). I like trying to turn the Drum into more of an instrument ensemble. My dream Drum update would have a 3rd midi mode (along with split channels and single channel as it is now) - it could basically leave tracks 1-5 in split mode and then have track 6 respond to midi note values🤔. Anway, thanks again!
Is it possible to play the volca drum from my alesis nitro electronic drum set? I also have an alesis multipad strike that I was originally just going to sample volca drum sounds to, but I thought how fun would it be to play the volca from the drum set. So far it doesn't seem possible, I hope I'm wrong.
Well, I don't know much in the way of details about your drum set, but hopefully it can work. Can you set specific drums to send notes on specific midi channels? You can search for the Volca Drum MIDI Implementation Chart if you don't already have it. The volca has 2 different midi modes, I think the default has drum parts 1-6 respond to channels 1-6, which might be good, but there is also a single-channel mode that relies on different midi note values to select the part. If nothing works using a direct midi cable you could also try usb (but you would need a midi 2x2 box to hook the volca to a computer, also less portable and a bigger likelihood of latency). Basically you use a DAW like Ableton to route incoming midi signals (from your drums) out to the Volca (I think that can be done using 1 or 2 daw tracks, but haven't done that sort of thing in a while). Anyway, best of luck. Let me know how it goes.
axobeatz Hey, sure - the default MIDI setting on the Volca Drum is “split midi” and this just means that the midi notes sent by a controller (like the BSP) on midi channel 1 will play part 1 on the Drum, channel 2 notes play part 2, etc. And it can be basically _any_ note on coming from the BSP, so something like C3 works fine. BUT, note that the Drum does not respond to midi note data chromatically (so a D4 on channel 4 does the same thing as a C#3 on channel 4, it plays part 4 as if you hit the part on the Drum itself). So, you need to go into the Arturia editor/midi control center on a computer and hook the BSP up by USB, then change some settings: the most straightforward way to set things up is to put BSP drum track 1 onto midi channel 1, drum track 2 onto midi channel 2, etc. - if you haven’t used the Arturia software, just poke around at the various tabs and look for the drum track settings. When it’s set up like this you can make drum sequences 1-6 on the BSP and it should play those sequences on the right parts on the Volca Drum. THEN, once that is working, you can also go into the Arturia software and set up what the knobs do. First go to the Korg site, look at downloads for the Drum, find the midi implementation chart, and see the midi CC values for the Volca drum. With all of this you can do stuff like set one of the BSP knobs to control the resonator send amount for a specific part, or a decay length, or whatever (bear in mind that you have to set a BSP knob’s midi channel to make sure you are controlling the right Drum part). I hope this helps! - Thanks for watching!
Hi, just discovered your videos lately and loving them. Could you briefly explain how you go about changing the volca drum parameters within Ableton live? I have no problem setting up the 6 midi tracks as external instruments, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to automate the volca drum parameters within ableton.
Hey, you need the "midi implementation chart" for the Volca (a search should find that) to get the so-called CC parameters. Those CC parameters are sort of a variable that can be set to different values in Ableton - I will make up an example to clarify: if a CC parameter of 65 corresponded to a filter frequency on a synthesizer, then setting CC_65 to 0 would close the filter and setting CC_65 to 127 would open the filter all the way. It's midi stuff (7-bit), so the range is 0-127. Then maybe CC_66 would be a decay value (on this fictional synthesizer). So the chart I mentioned will tell you the real CC numbers for the various settings on the Drum. Then, in Ableton, when you are set up with a midi clip that can play notes on the Volca Drum, look for a little tab down in the clip viewer (on the left) that is called Automation Envelopes (or something like that). This opens a trace/graph for each of the possible CC values and you draw in a curve with the values, so those values change over time as your midi clip plays. Think of a midi clip as not only sending out note and velocity values, but also CC values, as a function of time. Let me know if this helps. I can try to send you a screenshot or such at some point, if that would help.
Excellent video, very informative. Thinking of purchasing a Microfreak and a Volca drum and wish to ask how you’ve connected these in your video. Looks like ‘sync in’ on the Volca to I guess either ‘clock out’ or ‘midi out on the Microfreak? Many thanks if you can reply.
Thank you so much for these in depth tutorials. I plan on connecting a volca drum to my prophet via midi. Will the clocks sync even if I don't have a sequence actively playing from my prophet?
You are very welcome! Thanks for checking then out🙏🏼 I'm not exactly sure about the midi. I've seen that sort of thing both ways. There might be a global setting on the Drum re: syncing via midi or not? Another option might be to use a sync or clock out from the Prophet into the Drum? Let me know how it goes👍🏻
Great video! Thanks for the in-depth tutorials. They have been indispensable as I make my way into the synth world. I'm curious if you've noticed a glitch on the volca drum where the light on one or more of the 'parts' shows that it's on when, in fact, it is muted. It has been a real pain not being able to trust the LED indicators for the parts, and korg hasn't been very helpful (yet).
Thank you, glad to hear the videos are helpful! But dang, sorry to hear about that LED issue :( I have not experienced that on mine. I don't use muting a ton, so maybe just haven't noticed it because of that? I hope an update fixes it soon!
JESSICA JAMES Sure, I can try! What are you trying to do? Just use the pads? Make a sequence? Use the knobs to control it? Do you have the Arturia Midi Editor on your computer? Is your Volca still in the default midi mode (split midi mode) or have you changed it to single channel mode? Let me know👍🏻.
Wayne Cowan Thank you! - the Drum has a couple of different midi options and I was using the default: each drum part (i.e. track/sound) has it’s own channel, so part 1 on channel 1, etc. With this in mind, you go into the Arturia Midi Control Center software (with your beatstep pro connected) and you set (for example) pad 1 to play a C4 note (the specific note doesn’t matter, but i think velocity does) on midi channel 1. Then pad 2 -> channel 2, etc. (so you are setting the pads to override the global midi channel number). That’s pretty much it! I hope this helps👍🏻!
Thanks for the reply...lots for me as a newbie to.get caught up with...so basically I need to assign a kick, snare, hiphat.. etc as a dedicated instrument on it's on channel.per pad sndcezch pad us set with it's own midi channel.in order for me to have individual.control. correct
Wayne Cowan Exactly. But, to be clear, in the clip in the video I am using a sequence made and running on the Drum itself. I am using the knobs to modify the drum sounds and the pads to change the waveguide effect settings. But you could also program and run sequences on the BeatStep Pro, have it control the Drum entirely. To do that, again in midi control center, you set the channel for the drum tracks on the Beatstep Pro - track 1, channel 1 etc. Then the midi cable transmits the sequence, handles the tempo, etc. Sorry if this seems like a lot - ask as much stuff as you like.
Hello! Great video, really useful for seeing all the capabilities of the Volca Drum. I've got a BeatStep Pro and I'm interesting in getting the Volca so I was wondering if they would play nicely together. I'm curious as to what you meant by having to edit the BSP in the MIDI Control Center to control the FM shrieks? What happened and how did you fix it?
Hey, sure, I feel like the BSP is super powerful and a really flexible way to control the Volca Drum. I think I was just talking about the MIDI CC setup for the BSP - just how you can set the BSP knobs and buttons to control specific parameters on the Volca. Some of the Drum's parameters are quite sensitive and, as I recall, I was pushing it into a sort of feedback mode of some sort. So, not really any problem or issue, just more of using it in a kind of unusual way.
Hi, I really appreciate your videos, thank you! I have one question: I recently bought a volca drum for connecting it to my uno synth by ik multimedia. I have tried everything with all the midi settings but I could not figure out how to sync them, neither with midi nor with sync in/out. Could you please help me with the settings? I also have a Keystep, could that be used? Thanks!
Johannes Kazunga Hey, you are welcome🙏🏼! Well I don’t have an Uno - looks really nice, btw - but I looked at the back panel online. So, no sync on it🤔. If you have uno midi out to volca midi in and start a sequence on the uno does it start the volca sequence (this happens, for example, with the sq-1 sequencer)? I feel like the Keystep could be very helpful here: you could run keystep sync out to volca sync in, and then keystep midi out to uno midi in - so then if you run a sequence or arpeggio on the keystep it should sync the volca drum (probably have to “arm” the Drum by pushing play). Not sure, but you could also try uno midi out to keystep midi in, that might set the keystep tempo(?), and then use the keystep sync out to the volca sync in. Last thing that comes to mind: use volca sync out to keystep sync in, then send a keystep sequence to the uno via midi. Just test to make sure that the tempo of the device in charge controls the other device’s tempo, and also keep in mind that volcas have a sync global parameter setting (see manual on how to change), if it seems like these devices are speaking a different “sync language”. I hope all of this helps, good luck with it👍🏻! Thanks a lot for watching, and the feedback!
@@undulations Hi, thanks so much for your answer. I have tried the midi out of the uno to midi in of the volca, but the sequence of the uno won't only control the tempo but also trigger the bass drum in the uno synth! I will follow your advice and try with the keystep.
Hi. Very interesting and informative video. I notice you often use a TASCAM DR recorder. I have a DR-07. I find the 3.5mm input on the DR-07 is extremely hot for Line level signals. Do you use an attenuator cable with your setup? I've seen a couple of -35dB attenuator cables on Amazon. Also, what is that nifty purple light in the final segment?
Hey, thanks very much🙏🏼! I certainly agree that a lot of line-level signals seem like too much for the Tascam(mine is a DR-05, probably similar?). I work around it in a lot of cases: low device volume and input gain pretty low also - I'm sure that's not best practices🤔. BUT, I do also use various attenuators. Sometimes the Bastle Dude mixer is good for this if the signal is mono. But at some point I bought some TRS "headphone volume" cables that are really cheap and turned out surprisingly fine. They just have a little in-line potentiometer wheel. You can get male-male and just use as a cable or male-female and use as an extension cable. The ones I use are so nondescript that there is no brand? As for the light? That's actually a toy, my kids had a couple growing up: it's kind of a small flat disk version of a plasma ball lamp? I think I put a plexi ball over the disk in that shot. The cool thing is that it has a mic for being a sort of music light. I think it was like $12, but no clue if they are made anymore? Anway, thanks again for checking out the video!
You can record external midi data in stages part by part, but you can’t just plug and jam along whole kit to midi notes play as you said. Do you think it is technically possible to system update to midi channel with midi notes? That’s be good if they did
Yeah, I really thing it could be done and I'm not sure why they wouldn't. Does it turn it more into a synth than Korg would like? Regardless, this reminds me of how I dealt with that on the Volca Sample. I wrote a custom Organelle patch that converted midi note values to the pitch CC data, allows me to play samples chromatically. I will look into writing some code (on pc) that would allow a midi keyboard to play a Drum. Will let you know if I do, maybe even make a short video about it👍🏻.
Sorry it's taken me forever to reply. I will try to locate that code; should just be in my Processing folder (hopefully the name is clear!). Do you have an IG or Twitter account where I can dm you a google drive link?
Do you get distortion running line level into the tascam d05 field recorder?i seem to remember reading the field recorders didn't candle line level too well....how do you get around it?
Hmmm... I don't do anything to it... I feel like the recording quality is fine (not a big difference from Zoom H4N) - I'm wondering if there are multiple versions or firmware issues? I tend to run the input level fairly low in most cases to avoid clipping. Sorry this is not really any help. Thanks for watching!
Hey, I've got a Chase Bliss Mood and think that the interfaces are similar. I don't think they have any timing I/O other than midi, and the Drum + Blooper are midi-in only. So this makes me think that you'd have to introduce a midi source to act as a "conductor" of sorts. So, for example, something like a korg sq-1 or an arturia keystep or beatstep? Then, it might be easiest to use a chase bliss MidiBox to hook things up: sequencer (or controller) to the MidiBox (by 5-pin midi cable), MidiBox to Blooper (by 1/4" trs cable), and from the MidiBox(thru port) into the Drum (by 5-pin cable). That should sync them. There might also be a way to do it with a DAW and a midi 2x2 box, one out going to the Drum and the other going to the Blooper (5-pin cable to a breakout cable, to a 1/8" to 1/4" trs adaptor) - but the type of breakout cable (signal on tip vs signal on ring) needs to be correct for the Blooper - maybe some info on the Chase Bliss site would clarify. Hope this helps some - let me know how it goes👍🏻!
Me again :) Just playing around with clocking the Drum via the BSP via MIDI, but the also clocking via the Koma RH301's clock divisions output via the clock input on the Drum. I did this the other night and realised that even tho I was using external clocking, the tempo dial was actually making a difference. From watching your videos, I now know why. Have you had any joy using the roller/looper on the BSP and the Drum?
Smacksalad Productions Yeah, stuff with syncing and the resonator can be a little perplexing at times🤔. I still struggle with it all the time (but it can still be fun! one of my favorite parts of NTS-1 video was when I synced it to a Pocket Operator “wrong” (using the audio signal instead of sync signal). I have not really done much with the roller/looper - I feel like, in general, that I need to use the BSP more🤔!
@@undulations OK, thanks. I shall have a look into the MIDI more and see if I can get the Drum to obey :) RollerLooper, plus Step Jump sounds like a winner to me.
Hmmm, not sure🤔. I should update my BSP and check. Traditionally, my main problem with both has been trying to play the sample/sound chromatically using a keyboard or other midi source, but I don't think I was doing that in this particular video.
Super informative video! How would you connect a volca drum to a microkorg? I'm looking to have the arp function and tempos be on the same clock. New to all this but really enjoying it. :)
Hey, it comes down to MIDI (I don't think the MicroKorg has sync i/o). So, you would need a standard 5-pin MIDI cable to connect from the MicroKorg MIDI _out_ to the Volca Drum MIDI _in_. Then you'll need to explore how the two interact (I don't own a MicroKorg - there might be a youtube video that talks about pairing the MicroKorg with a Volca - any Volca - which could be helpful.) and possibly change some settings (on either device). Ideally you can get the MicroKorg tempo to control the Volca tempo, also transport control (i.e. sequence start and stop). Beyond that? Bear in mind that the quantized (chromatic) pitches on the Volca Drum are more-or-less "internal" (at least of the last update that I saw) - meaning that you can do sequenced melodies on the Volca Drum using its own sequencer, but not from an external sequencer. I should also mention that it might be cool to send the Volca Drum _audio_ through the MicroKorg. Anyway, sorry this probably not super helpful. Good luck with it and let me know how the MIDI connection turns out!
Joe Gigs Thank you very much! She seems to like hanging out while I make videos (“WHO is he talking too???”😂). The other one has to go in timeout a lot because he rams tripods and jumps on tables and howls, etc. 🤔
Hi there :) After some fiddling around i finally managed to hook up my bsp to volca drum! I just noticed 2 things that bother me, maybe you have the answer. When running a sequence and pressing record on the bsp the pitch on the volca changes, after i stip recording it goes back to normal. The second thing is with controlling the volca with cc messages with the bsp knobs. My first sound works perfectly ( i have all 16 knobs set to a specific cc message found on the midi implementation chart) but when i change on the volca to another sound only part of my knobs still works. So sound 1 no problem and sound 2 through 6 are somewhat weird. Thanks in advance, thought i asked you, because you used the same setup and this is soooo specific :D
TheVik7900 Well, I’m gonna have to think a little more about the first one, but I believe I do understand the second issue: It seems like you’re using the the default midi input setting on the volca - i think it’s called “split midi” - and this sends midi channel 1 cc messages to drum part 1, channel 2 to part 2, etc. So, when you want to control a specific drum part from the bsp you need to switch to that midi channel on the bsp. Now, the reason that some settings like the resonator tuning or such work when you are on the other parts (2-6) is because they apply to the entire kit. I’m guessing, but I think this is what’s going on. Hope this helps, lmk.
@@undulations thanks, i compromised and added cc function to the bsp knobs for send for each sound plus 1 extra parameter and for the resonator chamber, might fidle around sone more in the future if i have the correct gear to update my volca drum. Ill also keep looking for a reason for the pitchchange when recording since the kicks in high pitch drive me nuts :D
TheVik7900 Good luck with it all. I don’t know, but the update might fix the pitch recording thing? you don’t need a lot to do it: aux cable, access to a laptop/pc, the update audio file, and a way to play it. there might be a phone way to do it, not sure. (just don’t play file into a speaker or headphones!).
CAN YOU make a more detailed explanation of the volca implementation charts? What are those X's? And those **********? etc.... I don't understand a thing on that chart. Can you translate it for us please?. I have a BEATSTEP PRO and want to set it up.....with the V Drum. I found some info by a sweet German dude but it was about the V Sampler. I haven't tested it yet ( I assigned 6 midi channels on the BS pro -hoping this will affect the 6 parts of the kit ) How about the knobs...?.....IF this works ofcourse.THANKS!!!
Hey, you can definitely set up the bsp knobs to control Drum parameters. The midi imp chart is your guide for doing just that. The X's and ******'s are just blanks. So, for example, you can see that the Drum doesn't _transmit_ any midi. Next, realize that the Drum actually had TWO midi imp charts - one for Split Channel midi mode (the default) and one for Single Channel midi mode (see Drum's manual on how to set, but I feel like split mode is good in many cases, so sticking with default is okay). Then, talking Split Mode from here on out, you'll see that you can send on channels 1-6 for parts 1-6, as you mentioned, and then - I haven't used it, but it looks like you can control velocity from a controller pad by using midi note 90 (on channel 1), note 91 (ch 2), etc. - kind of confusing. BUT the main thing is the big list of control change (CC) codes. For example, to control Pan for Part 2, use the Arturia software to set a knob's midi channel to 2 and it's CC code to 10 (see chart). Or Bit Reduction is a CC code of 49. These CC values are sort of like a code number or address. Then when you turn a knob its CC send value changes. Again, confusing, but realize that CC is all about two numbers: the code number (given in the chart) and the value (0-127) which is set by the knob in question. So if I make a knob Fold for Part 3, and turn that knob, then it will send a midi signal that is like "midi channel 3, CC 50 (the code for Fold), and 11 (a value for a low Fold setting)". Let me know if this helps at all👍🏻.
@@undulations OK! Thanks for the responce! .....Here's where I am, at the moment: The midi channels for the 6 Volca Parts worked! (Thank you German dude! -not to be confused with Gearmanndude) So I have to figure out what you'r talking about above and expand on controling the knobs. ( I will connect the BS PRO (.........Did I just write BS? ........+ PROFESSIONALLY?... wELL i sHURE hOPE nOT!!!!!) to the PC and go to the drum map page and see what I can make out. SO reading one of the midi implementation charts ( I have no idea which is which)...iiis 14CC = PART1, Value 1 or 2? (Is this Layer choice?) IF yes I'm getting somewere.
@@MYGAS21 Well, I was avoiding Layer Choice and Layer 1+2 for the moment because those are the weirdest - a CC value _range_ is sometimes used to control a button's on/off state (i.e. a value of 63 or less is OFF, and above 63 is ON). Beyond that, you can set BSP pads to _toggle_ and send specific CC values. So combined this basically can turn a BSP pad into a synth's button (or even make a new "button" for it). I'd say that the first thing to try is getting a parameter like Fold to work - knob on BSP controls setting on Volca. Also, you can see the display change when it is working. Oh, last thing - changing parts - I recall also changing parts directly on the Drum (no rule against using Drum and BSP at the same time to control it). But I assume there is some way to change parts from the BSP. Good luck👍🏻!

@@MYGAS21 Hey, you bet! Sounds like it's coming together👍🏻 Vey true that the Layer button has 3 states, and you may need to look at the Drum's global settings (see manual) to change the details of syncing. Understood about the other two synths in a duet: a lot of times fixable by putting each synth on a specific midi channel, like 7 and 8 (many synths receive all channels by default).👍🏻
Well, this raises an interesting point - I don't really ever pair it with the Digitakt, BUT I think it makes a lot of sense to do that. It seems like I'm always trying to get samples onto the Digitakt and then use it standalone. I really like the idea of using Digitakt midi track control of CC values to get the Drum to do a lot of melodic stuff (maybe with the Digitakt handling the beats?). One of the clips in my latest video is sequencing the Drum via SQ-1 (and using some custom code as a midi relay) for more of a synth-like voice. I feel like the Digitakt could take the computer out of that setup. Anyway, thanks a lot for checking out the video!
Well, that's a really interesting question. The short answer is no (but an update of the Drum could potentially change this). The Kick has got its so-called Touch FX for live playing that the Drum doesn't have. That's stuff like instant-on rolls and tempo changes that are sort of like a Pocket Operator might have. BUT, for me, the biggest difference is chromatic mode (Kick) vs. quantized mode (Drum). You can _sequence_ a mono/polyphonic melody/harmony on the Drum using one or more tracks but you can't just _play_ one on the full keyboard like you can on the Kick. You can overcome this a little on the Drum by using Step Jump or by making each track have a specific pitch (so the Drum can have a 6-note polyphonic "keyboard"). Live-playing melodies on the Kick is one of its best features (see the very first video on this channel, btw). AND, probably the most important feature difference is that the Drum doesn't receive MIDI note data. So it is much harder to just hook up a keyboard or pad controller or sequencer and get a melody out of the Drum. I'd say Kick + midi keyboard + some sort of audio effect like rverb or delay = something very playable that the Drum can't replace. Hope this helps!
@@undulations yes that helps thanks! Those differences are enough for me to go ahead and "add to cart" on the Kick and Drum. I'm also keen to get the recently announced Volca Sample v2 which addresses some of the limitations of the original Sample.
Hmmm... it's been a while, having trouble remembering all the components. I think I ran most of the audio into the Dude Mixer from Bastl Instruments, then into a Tascam DR-05 field recorder. For some of the MIDI I think I used a MIDI 2x2 box from Midi Solutions? One of those? If not, give me a time in the video and I can tell you for sure. Thanks for watching!
I was hooked at the first demo! Looking to purchase a Volca Drum and your videos will be incredibly helpful. Were the sounds in the first demo all coming from the Drum or a combination of the Drum and SQ-1? Huge Radiohead/Thom Yorke fan and looking to make music very much like your demos. I have an Akai MPK249 and use Ableton Live Lite - I have so much to learn!!! Thank you Nim.
Hey, that is all great to hear! I guess the very, very first demo at the beginning of the video is just the Drum, no SQ-1 required, but a couple of the later demos (with the tiny plants) do use the SQ-1. The SQ-1 is generally super-useful, but it's tricky in the Drum case because the Drum doesn't respond to MIDI notes chromatically (at least not with the update that I have; always a chance they have changed that). BUT, that said, the SQ-1 can still contribute some nice glitchy rhythmic effects. Thanks for watching!
@@undulations the demo I was mentioning starts at 3:06 (with plants) I guess I'm more interested in the bassy sounds but am I right to assume the eerie higher pitched noises, like a triangle? are from the SQ-1? Love the bass line in DEMO 1 (at 3:06...)
GreenEyedScotty Ahhh, understood. Actually all of the _sounds_ themselves are from the Drum. The SQ-1 is just telling the Drum some of what to play. note: while the SQ-1 can be coaxed into making some buzzy tones in special circumstances, it’s generally more of a supporting member of the sound sources.
I take it you did cc redirect to access the pitch parameters on the Volca Drum. I know with the new firmware, you can get it for chromatic notes, and it has got me thinking I could rig it as a 6 note synth, by redirecting the note info for each of the 6 midi channels to the pitch cc for each of the 6 parts. Midi Solutions Event Processor Plus would be a good candidate for experimentation. By running the Event Processor to poly chain mode, and redirecting the 6 parts in a round robin method, it seems possible. But a whole lot of work, as the Volca Kick has chromatic control right out of box!
Mark Pigott I think all of what you’re saying is very true! In some ways, particularly using the layer-specific level parameters (or possibly pan), you could even think of it as up to 12 voices. I had the same exact thought about how the Kick is so much easier for external melodic control. It’s a lot to think about!
I've ordered my Volca Drum. Where did you get the notes that you use for the Single Mode? I will be using a TT-78 as MIDI Controller, then redirecting the Notes (all on Ch #10) and redirect note # on the TT-78 to I believe C.D.E, F, G. A???? Thanks. I can not tie up midi channels 1-6. It would be nice if you could pick and choose midi channel per part.
Mark Pigott Hey, the split and single MIDI implementation charts are online as pdf’s at www.korg.com/us/support/download/product/0/809/#manual (if this link doesn’t work, go to the Korg site’s Drum page and look for the “manuals” link at the bottom of the page). good luck getting it integrated into your setup👍🏻!
@@undulations Hi! I have all the manuals, user, and both midi charts. The question I have, is how you figured out that the notes in single midi mode are C,D,E,F,G,A? This information is not listed,or I missed it, in all 3 manuals. Thanks.
Mark Pigott So, I think I just flailed around on the Keystep for little bit and found the active keys. I have some java code to scan for CC’s, etc. but in this case it was just looking around. No clue why it wasn’t written down anywhere - maybe single channel mode was sort of a late addition?
lol, basically all of them🤣! synth cats are great and all, but one time i caught the tabby pulling out patch cables. all the more reason to take some notes, but 😡!
How can i underatand the way u plugged the drum into that beatstep? It sucks.....i Always Need a PC to "set It up"...... U know man, i Just ordered a soma ornament....Will get RID of that CPU based shit
Yeah, I totally get that. I was just thinking about using Akai MPK Mini Mark II on a project, but then have to think about what was the last thing I used it for, how would it be set up, would the setup tool need a software update, would the keyboard need a firmware update. So then I just do the dishes or something😂. As for the setup, I don't 100% recall but I assume it was just the Arturia midi breakout cable plugged into the Beatstep, then 5-pin midi cable into that and the Drum. But as you say, channels and pad behavior have to be set up on PC. Mine is probably still set up from this video.
The autumnal fade out was a delight both musically and visually. You take these instruments to their extreme through musicality, science and experimentation, and that is what absorbs me the most. Thank you, Dr Nim...and I love the cat cameos !

62 - D4 - Part 2

65 - F4 - Part 4

I love the volca drum & I was wondering if you’ve figured out a work around for this:
I want to control the drum with an external sequencer but use the volcas motion capture feature to modulate parameters.

Another thought is to see if you can sync it fast from the brute (as using Aturia gear to crash Arturia gear is a more clear cut problem).
wow. what a nice tutorial
Thank you very much!
Sooooo nice🥰
YGRAVITY Thank you much🙏🏼!
Really informative and inspiring, as always, for a newbie like myself. It's a shame the Drum isn't designed to respond to midi pitch signals because its tone designing possibilities are huge. I liked the Microfreak groove a lot! Thanks for making the vid.
Hey, thanks a lot for checking it out🙏🏼
Not sure if you saw, but my latest video has a clip in it about using an external sequencer with the Drum.
Belated thanks for the reply. When I become a more advanced user of the Drum, I will come to appreciate the beauty of your dream update.
It would be cool if you demonstrated how to actually synch these synths up with oneanother.
Sorry, it has been a while. Which synths would you like to sync?
I was wondering how can i sync out from a Volca drum to a perkons hd01? I can't seem to get the correct ppq for the drum to be the master.
My beatstep pro wont trigger my volca drum 1-6 parts, what are the midi cc for these ? can you help
axobeatz Hey, sure - the default MIDI setting on the Volca Drum is “split midi” and this just means that the midi notes sent by a controller (like the BSP) on midi channel 1 will play part 1 on the Drum, channel 2 notes play part 2, etc.
@@undulations thanks a lot, a very useful explanation, worked great for me
Hi, just discovered your videos lately and loving them.
@@undulations Amazing, thank you!

Excellent video, very informative. Thinking of purchasing a Microfreak and a Volca drum and wish to ask how you’ve connected these in your video. Looks like ‘sync in’ on the Volca to I guess either ‘clock out’ or ‘midi out on the Microfreak? Many thanks if you can reply.
anthonydavid1965 Yes, it was clock out to sync in. I feel like they make a nice combo. Thanks for watching👍🏻!
Undulations Thanks for the reply.
Can you please explain to me how did you make your BTSP work with drum volca? I got the same connection as you
JESSICA JAMES Sure, I can try! What are you trying to do? Just use the pads? Make a sequence? Use the knobs to control it? Do you have the Arturia Midi Editor on your computer? Is your Volca still in the default midi mode (split midi mode) or have you changed it to single channel mode? Let me know👍🏻.
@@undulations good to know that you can set the volca drum to standard single channel as well.
Great video, how are you able to trigger individual drum sounds on the beat step pro
Thanks for the reply...lots for me as a newbie to.get caught up with...so basically I need to assign a kick, snare, hiphat.. etc as a dedicated instrument on it's on channel.per pad sndcezch pad us set with it's own midi channel.in order for me to have individual.control. correct
Wayne Cowan yep, that is correct!
Thanks... I wanted to confirm that all I need is the midi out to the volca and I do not need to use a synch cable as well, correct ?
@@undulations Cool thanks!
Anway, thanks again for checking out the video!
ugh why won't this download :(
nvm. i got it. great videos!!
@@undulations it’s not a ‘rhythm composer’
May I have the code you used to achieve pitches via midi cc?
Thanks for watching!
don't know if you still answer on old videos but Can you sync Volca Drum and Chase Bliss Blooper pedal via midi or in any other way?
All Volcas should have been eurorack compatible from day one ,I loved my FM and my BASS volcas , very good machines
Yes, those are two of my favorites👍🏻
BSP has Volca implementation in firmware since 2-0, it's obvi for the Sample once you get into it, does it not apply to Drum as well?

Your videos are great, also your cat is cute
@@undulations Q1: Weird because Layer Choice must have 3 positions: Only 1 or 2 and both? Q2: When I use the CV sync the VD goes crazy fast when the master BS-PRO is at a measly 45 bpm! In other words CV sync & midi sync ...are not in sync!!!! (hehehe! see what I did there?). Why is this happening? Q3: Please explain split channel mode and single channel mode. OOPS I JUST GOT IT! - I THINK ...it's just a different way.to structure midi commands..I reread your responce for the 435th time -I'M SMART!-and I think I understand it now!...(I will have to test it)....The BS-PRO.... ( the professional bs-er at your service!) ....I haven't told you this yet - I was meaning to - is controlling a LIL EREBUS from DREADBOX as well...and was hoping the three of them .....you know.....had a nice Ménage à trois. ......But their roles are a bit confused at the moment! (I'm told this is normal in the beginning) sooo.....I have to find how the BS-PRO sends separate polite requests...at the moment both respond to a common midi message -command! ..in an eager beaver kind of way.....(I know it's the professional BSers fault) Thanks for everything.
Where do you store all this gear? I just keep seeing boxes appear on the table, hehe.
meccanised lol, don’t worry, I have offsite storage😀
how do you find it pairs with the Digitakt?
on Elektronauts it gets a lot of love ie "machinedrum in your pocket" and I know you gotta lotta love for the 'Takt
Quick question: Can the Volca Drum do everything the Kick can? Does the Drum make the Kick obsolete or can the Kick work well with Drum?
Yes, that new Sample _does_ sound really nice!

What's that interface you're running everything into?
Hmmm... it's been a while, having trouble remembering all the components.

@@undulations thank you for your quick replies! If I grab a Drum unit I know what channel to turn to for tutorials! Thanks again.

The question I have, is how you figured out that the notes in single midi mode are C,D,E,F,G,A?
This information is not listed,or I missed it, in all 3 manuals.

Mark Pigott So, I think I just flailed around on the Keystep for little bit and found the active keys. I have some java code to scan for CC’s, etc. but in this case it was just looking around. No clue why it wasn’t written down anywhere - maybe single channel mode was sort of a late addition?

Yeah, I totally get that. I was just thinking about using Akai MPK Mini Mark II on a project, but then have to think about what was the last thing I used it for, how would it be set up, would the setup tool need a software update, would the keyboard need a firmware update. So then I just do the dishes or something😂. As for the setup, I don't 100% recall but I assume it was just the Arturia midi breakout cable plugged into the Beatstep, then 5-pin midi cable into that and the Drum. But as you say, channels and pad behavior have to be set up on PC. Mine is probably still set up from this video.
