- 2009 Barclaycard Mercury Prize Winner, Speech Debelle returns with Spinnin, the purest pop moment from her widely acclaimed debut album, Speech Therapy. Out on Big Dada on 14th September 2009.
Produced by Tunng mainman Mike Lindsay, Spinnin is a hugely catchy singalong of a tune, a feelgood route into the sometimes dark and emotional world of Ms Debelle.
That's not to say the girl sacrifices any of her lyrical intelligence. Her words are packed with barbed one-liners, clever asides and great imagery. The press has been quick to proclaim her a star in the making and on Spinnin she takes the opportunity to shine.
The world most certainly keeps spinning for Speech Debelle. In the last few weeks she has featured three times on the BBCs Glastonbury coverage, had her photo on the front page of The Independent, been interviewed for major features in the Daily Mirror and the Sunday Times, appeared on BBC1s breakfast telly couch and insured that her rise from hostel dwelling and bad deeds to articulate, honest and abrupt pop star has become the biggest story of the Mercury season. Great band, lovely sound, I dont like rapping usually but this is a joy to listen to.
Only thing I would say is give some space for the instruments to flourish, too many words over the track and it becomes congested

You do realise that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have their own dedicated radios stations?
Urban music is a cultural niche just like classical, folk, rock and so forth. All of these have BBC radio shows, and BBC TV covers all sorts of stuff - (eg Songs Of Praise is on Sunday evenings).
Londoners (of all 'colours') pay license fees for Scottish radio as well.
So prefer this version to the Olympic one

Some girl talking, minimal singing probably enhanced, breathless poor and an unforgettable monotnous tune. I am sure some people will like it but not many. Nothing about her looks, race or musical genre just a limited performer.
"but if your heads in the pillow and your butts in the air they can put it right there" why the fuck did this line get taken out, its worded in a inoffensive way so what was the big deal.This line does annoy me a bit tough and the couch potato line in the key song just cause i don't think theres athin wrong with being idle or lazy once your not contributing to the evil and ego-dominator mentality in the world.Shes good but takes herself a bit too seriously. : )
voice isnt particularly great, lyrics are ok, style is quite authentic but done before, nothing new here, the problem with this style is all the songs end up sounding the same
