Yay! Thanks everyone! I appreciate the comment RE the 2nd/adlib/backup vocal. I tend to do that lots...! Glad you were feeling us at Chill n Charge - it was hard to work out how we were going down. It was, however a beautiful stage to play
Does anyone know how to download the audio from this video so i could listen to the this song on my ipod. I can't find this song on itunes it hasn't been released yet. Please help
wow! imagine the rhyming possibilities when she discovers words of more than 1 syllable! I mean "bye" and "cry" are certainly original enough, but I can hardly wait til Speech figures out how many words end with "...ation" (oh wait I think maybe she did that on another track..)
i was guna express many negative comments on this, but then i realised even if we say we like it or not we are still chekin out this page and we are still spending our time commenting therefore this is giving them even more publicity. so they must have done something right!!!
Thanks for all the nice comments - and the angry ones..! It's flattering to read strong responses of any kind, so do keep 'em coming. I was actually pleasantly surprised to see there have been so many views and also to see how recent some of these comments are. New album out soon...! We're working very hard on it at at the moment. @dreadkey [twitter] /dreadkey [MySpace] :)
Im happy for her - i think this is one of her better tracks but a very monotone rapper, wishing her best of luck for the future, not sure if I would pay for this album, ist more for sharers.
it's not that thick, but i have southern ears. but she doesn't have a thick accent compared to skepta or even dizzee rascal. check out fix up look sharp by dizzee rascal for a thick accent
I heard her do a live version of this on Huw Stephens's Radio 1 show last year. With a stripped down instrumentation, it came over a lot better than this studio version.
it might change your views?? and if this is industry music, what isn't (in this genre)? all music you hear daily is bound to be "industrial" because it wouldn't be made as public as it is without it being likeable to a wide audience... unfortunately, this does mean dumming down stuff (like Last Choir Standing on tv *VOMIT). i could ramble on about mainstream issues for hours, but im not going to. one thing i will say though, in my opinion, speech debelle is musically refreshing in this genre...
why are you takin up a whole page of comments chattin like what ur opinion is fact? true i agree wit some of it, but don't chat so much negativity on other artists, there's no point. she won, in my opinion she deserved it, but the other artists nominated were amazin as well.
... however, i am willing to be proved wrong :) - i dont know an awful lot about "black music" (is that the correct term?). P.S. Sorry for the late reply.
i am not over whelmed by her music - its not great - music has gone down the drain i appreciate talent what ever the genre of music and this is nothing but notice
much prefer 'the key' to this track. she's not bad. there are better people in the uk hip hop scene would are totally underrated though. still, happy for her to be making it.
Yeah well done Speach, not my thing but appreciated the Murcury lifting the strangle hold that big Corp music companies have on the play list we get fed day in day out. I would have poked my eyes out with a spoon if Florence had won - Radio 1 have made them selves a complete Tart to her cause. Nice one speach.
Terrible, terrible hate on this page. No wonder the world is in tatters, and babies are being blown up by bombs. This is music. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. Thats why we live in a society where we can have an opinion-go and listen to something you like. If you want to hate and abuse, then take that energy somewhere it can be chanelled into something useful, especially if it's somewhere I can't hear it! Really like this music - not my usual "thing", but I for one am open minded
Led Bib (how the HELL did they get nominated! this is WAY too far out for most people to understand! unless you are a huge Ornette Coleman fan, this music will make no sense to you. I found it brilliant, funny, unhinged, wild...it's ART kiddies!) Sweet Billy Pilgrim (lovely, gorgeous, beautiful, accomplished - no wonder they didn't win. still, thanks to the Mercury for giving them some exposure)
Yeah I Am Listening To The Same Thing You Are. I Don't Fink This Is A'Capella So OBVIOUSLY It Has Got Music Involved But Kewll If Dahs Your Opinion Then You're Entitled To It. You Know Music Theory? She Could Hav Taken Music And Gotten A GCSE.. She Could Know Music Theory Too.. All You Need To Know Mate, Is That Enough People Like Her For Her To Hav Won The Mercury Prize 2009. EVEN IF YOU DON'T LIKE HER, THERE ARE OTHERS WHO DO AND YOU SAYIN ALL THIS ISN'T GONNA CHANGE THEIR MINDS. SORRY...
I`m now convinced that the people who decide who wins or lose are either paid by the record labels or they just don`t give a shit. I can`t here some things she says The backing tracks are always nice though
still, i doubt she was the only one to be turned down by choice fm - i mean the twenty you speak of were probably in the same boat... but to me, speech debelle doesn't sound overly mainstream/sellable. i mean it's not the usual recycled jargon you hear nowadays in the charts. im not saying that innovation is automatically "good" (look at yemmin...). I'm probably looking at it far too objectively - i'm listening to the album now on spotify, and i quite like it. you don't have to appreciate...
@"Fair play for you. But honestly, I could find 20 female artists who would spit on speech debelle for days, " tru but i can say the same about many US rappers at the moment..(soldier boy, P diddy) your drive to succes and getting that break will put you out there.. also her style of production is very different from what u would here from the average UK hip hop /grime/urban tune so i know she aint the best im not even sure if i would by her album BUT i understand why she won
can't believe this tripe won the Mercury Prize, yea shes got some talent, but how many people could honestly sit and listen to her for 10 hours straight? her voice would annoy you after a while
Bat for Lashes (too smart and original to ever win, but they keep nominating her, good for her to stay on the radar but out of the mainstream..) Glasvegas (solid, serious and good in an i've-heard-it-all-before sort of way)
... music to enjoy it. (vice versa). for example, i like a lot of rubbish pop music, and i can appreciate mozart's music, but i'm not that keen on it. i think it's important to realise the difference between quality and actual preference... and for the record, this is tons better musically than dizzee rascal and the like. and im not just saying that because i can hear violins right now... you'll prob be glad that ive finished for now haha :)
@danbo1984 yeah that track is good, but quite a big difference, n to say her album is a joke is dumb, she just isn't to your taste or whatever, but Simon Cowell u aint! lol some lyrics may be banal, but there's room for that; its simple and sweet, many people can relate cos life is generally, for most people, pretty much like that.
I'm being bias obviously, and this is my opinion but how on earth did this win over Primary Colours? I thought I'd give her a listen, cos you know, never heard of her before, I'm not impressed.
i was doing security at the back of the main stage at Bestival in the Isle of wight and I tried to say hello and she completly blanked me - I am a black man 39 and come from the same area of south london ladies and gentleman you decide- perhaps because as she walked by I smelt the liquir from her breath - boy it stunk - Im not saying she is not talented but she dont represt the people actions speak louder than words
@d1esl0winnit I live in Pimlico and don't see this problem. Perchance you live in an urban ghetto where shit happens and other people just get on with their lives. Maybe if you had a job and less time to focus on negative aspects of you life you might find that there is more to life and you might get a girlfriend. Your palms must surely be very hairy by now?
the second track of vocals is way too loud... well, i say this as an emcee... i don't like the way the vocals have been laid but the rapping is real nice.
Ain`t is not a word mate! Being Cool is overrated and people try too hard to be outstanding. Being weird is now considered cool by people who watch TV stations like MTV and Channel U(whatever it`s called now). What`s a cool being to you?
like i got asthma but i dont even smoke like that. i can't see your face on face book, cuz we're not friends on face book ................. really? these are lyrics? .............really??
Yer feel me? It depends where you were bought up/dragged up/ drugged up and who your heros are. Can't stand that innit bruv voice either. I grew up in South London in the 70's and 80's we had our own slang back then it's all swings and roundabouts don't get hung up on dat shit. As long as you is true to your bad self all is well...
the bookies always put the odds on popularity. Mercury's were never about who is highest in the charts..Florence was never going to win..La Roux sudnt have even been in there
What Makes It Rubbish? It's Probably Better Than Anything You Do Because I Don't See You Posting Any Songs. No Offence Meant But Just Because Its Not Your Kind Of Music, Doesn't Mean You Should Slag It Off.
whats more concerning than opinions is the references you make to the girl; its appaling and you seem to embody the state of society yourself, so how about you take a look at your own expression before you criticise others!!!
her lyrics are deeep, but ...i dont know, her performance aint that special ....she kinda annoys me ...i hadn't heard of her till she one the mercury ...wish her the best doe
Florence and the Machine (interesting sound but it all gets a bit pompous and overblown and the videos are a right turn off) La Roux (phony, derivative bleep-blop crap with a surly unpleasant face and "ironic" styling that just looks butt-ugly)
Mercury-related nonsense aside, this has got no flow! If she was going to be frank and honest,, she should have just ripped off Jill Scott, who does it much better and to a tune.
It is poetry. If you don't understand it, or don't like then don't listen to it.
I love this! something new n fresh!
Another brilliant tune
She's wonderful

Still lovin this
yeah i heard that too - it was so so good
she make a very good music!!!

Yay! Thanks everyone! I appreciate the comment RE the 2nd/adlib/backup vocal. I tend to do that lots...! Glad you were feeling us at Chill n Charge - it was hard to work out how we were going down. It was, however a beautiful stage to play

richtig geil!!!
read about her , she is definatly cool but there are other female rappers that dont get this attention ,why?
wow! imagine the rhyming possibilities when she discovers words of more than 1 syllable!
I mean "bye" and "cry" are certainly original enough, but I can hardly wait til Speech figures out how many words end with "...ation" (oh wait I think maybe she did that on another track..)

Im happy for her - i think this is one of her better tracks but a very monotone rapper, wishing her best of luck for the future, not sure if I would pay for this album, ist more for sharers.
@OlliBertolli BULLET!
why do you believe I wouldnt get the money...how else would get paid baby?? As long as you enjoy it..its all good x
read the article on her in this week's big issue - argues this.
it's not that thick, but i have southern ears. but she doesn't have a thick accent compared to skepta or even dizzee rascal. check out fix up look sharp by dizzee rascal for a thick accent
This sound isnt new, dont get things mixed calling it the all new fabulous sound of 2010
my man if stupidity is exhalted you must be king,
I heard her do a live version of this on Huw Stephens's Radio 1 show last year. With a stripped down instrumentation, it came over a lot better than this studio version.
..yeah buy it so she can get paid and give you more of this stuff where it came from
it might change your views?? and if this is industry music, what isn't (in this genre)? all music you hear daily is bound to be "industrial" because it wouldn't be made as public as it is without it being likeable to a wide audience... unfortunately, this does mean dumming down stuff (like Last Choir Standing on tv *VOMIT). i could ramble on about mainstream issues for hours, but im not going to. one thing i will say though, in my opinion, speech debelle is musically refreshing in this genre...

Why not wait for the release at the end of May S so you can buy the track, and then the girl can get paid ; )
... however, i am willing to be proved wrong :) - i dont know an awful lot about "black music" (is that the correct term?).

R00FLL AHAHHAHA best comment!!!i so agree wit you tho
much prefer 'the key' to this track. she's not bad. there are better people in the uk hip hop scene would are totally underrated though. still, happy for her to be making it.

@Grazolla
100% correct Grazolla 100%

I can`t here some things she says
The backing tracks are always nice though
dunno about that there is a school full of infants up the road. I certainly think they would be able to match her lyrically
@ozipk If pretentious means I wish people with real talent would get awards ad recognition over mediocre ones, then, sure, I'm pretentious.
still, i doubt she was the only one to be turned down by choice fm - i mean the twenty you speak of were probably in the same boat...
but to me, speech debelle doesn't sound overly mainstream/sellable. i mean it's not the usual recycled jargon you hear nowadays in the charts. im not saying that innovation is automatically "good" (look at yemmin...). not bad, if you ignore the lyrics
Why Would You Wish Someone Who Has Done Nothing To You Dead?
well yeah, cos it surely isnt about the talent! i'll give most things a fair go, but this.....?
Maybe it's less about how she sounds and more about what she has to say? eh?
NO Offence But She Probably Has More Skills Than You. If I'm Wrong Sorry But I Don't See You Posting Any Videos As A SIGNED Artist.
mach ihn fertig, mädel (:

i really want to like her, because she seems like a great person, very inspirational. but her music is boring
no no no
No, casual racism bothers me though.
whats more concerning than opinions is the references you make to the girl; its appaling and you seem to embody the state of society yourself, so how about you take a look at your own expression before you criticise others!!!
I just had to say "Speech Debell-end" on another of her crappy videos.
She's very cute, has a very cute style. But I don't think it's that special, I wouldn't buy the album.
laughable that this won mercury!
her lyrics are deeep, but ...i dont know, her performance aint that special ....she kinda annoys me ...i hadn't heard of her till she one the mercury ...wish her the best doe
