This sounds much like an old school classic, I can feel the flow and subtlety of ATCQ in this song, with a lovely personal touch of course. So nice that some artists return to those basis.

I came on Debelle's Speech Therapy through the Present Magazine. Great track.
I can kinda see both sides of the arguement, but I personally think this girl is fantastic. It's really refreshing to see some lyrics that are actually about something, and the music is just so laid back. I'm not a fan of Florence, but she writes some incredible music. Everyone has different tastes, but it's all music, it's all love. Embrace different styles, it'll help you appreciate more

The only way I can describe this girl is like the british version of 'Lady bug mecca' from digable planets reincarnate. Even her sound has a strong digable planets influence. Jazz and hip hop is and always has been a beautiful combination and also creates a positive and uplifting vibe. Good Luck to her and no dount she is gonna go on to great things oin the future. I hope she keeps her Raw appeal and does not get too commercial so she appeals to the masses. If you dilute it you pollute it.!!

RAP is about expression, telling a story, feelings, pain, emotions, thoughts evrything a person feels man, and my interpretation is that this is what Debelle is doing man telling her story, her perspective etc. Backing her all day shes giving us a message, open ur EYES ,EARS and SOUL. 1 love.

I understand everybody's surprise! I personally was thinking that Bat 4 lashes or Friendly Fires would win. I guess the Jury uses a certain criteria. I don't like hip-hop but certainly enjoy good music. Speech Debelle is full of details and has the most eclectic rhythm arrangements, it's simple yet compelling, combine that with genuine lyrics, Bingo! Mercury prize.

yeah maybe but she is unheard of now, she had her 1 year in the spotlight. Surly this prize should go to artists who are going to establish a future, not just people who make a quick buck for a record company then dissapear.

i've gotta say, i wasn't expecting very much. i mean most popular UK music is stale and, well, shit. but this is actually pretty damn good, a breath of fresh air in a lazy, complacent industry. well, this one song is anyway i'll have to listen to more before i get too optimistic
