Chances are you will be able to scan the RFID chip, and read it (it won't be encrypted) but the only information on the chip will likely be just a tracking number that is tied to the invoice (or build sheet or whatever they call it in house) in their internal system. So unless you have access to Gibson's internal computer network the number will be useless (Gibson would need to start putting that information online somewhere). Or it will just be the serial number, which again needs to be tied to their internal database to be useful.
I’m thinking the real value in the RFD chips for the consumer might be proving an instrument is yours if it gets stolen. It would be nice if Gibson gave us some sort access to their db.
I just figured it was easier for inventory practices.
It is possible that they use the NFC variant of RFID, which is highly unlikely. It costs more, is only for internal use, and to scan those stickers you have to be in very close distance in order to scan them anyway. My guess would be that it is just the unencrypted 125 khz variant seeing the sticker. RFID variants are often limited in size of data what they can store, which I think contains either the serial number or tracking number that is linked to their internal systems as you mentioned before. Since the serial is not considered sensitive information, I wouldn't see the need to encrypt the data.
Their RFD probably would come back with alpha numerical codes that unless you have access to their in house tracking program it would probably be useless. I don’t know how modern Gibson has gotten with their in house tracking systems and processes. I worked in an engine plant and they had what they called a “Defect Tracking System” any and all serialized parts were scanned at the point of assembly and the engine set on a special stand with an rfd in the pallet that was tied to the cylinder block serial number. Any in house repairs done to any particular engine would have a description of the repair made and if any serialized parts that were replaced would have to be manually entered into the defect tracking program. I don’t think it would make sense to keep up with production guitars to that extent but possibly custom shop guitars would be worth it to have a build sheet with serial numbers or build dates of pickups and other components. Or creating a “VIN” type system so the serial number of the guitar would tell you everything from woods used body style pickup configuration and type. Ibanez sorta does that with their model numbers that everyone makes fun of but RG550 tells you it’s an RG guitar with HSH pickup configuration , that’s just a simple example but the RG565 also tells you what the guitar specs are, if it’s got a pick guard or not there’s some oddball models that don’t strictly adhere to that system but for the most part the numbers describe pickup configuration in Ibanez guitars.
Gibson remains IGNORANT 👍
the gold sg with p90's is beautiful ngl
I know why wasn't this mentioned???
That Bullion Gold/Cream P90 SG Custom at the very beginning is just heavenly!
You said it ! I was going to say the same thing , such a beauty !
My thoughts exactly! Would love to have that one!
The B roll in this video is so random haha. We're talking about gibsons but let's throw a random Jackson and zemaitis in there just because haha. It's like trogly is using AI to edit and it doesn't understand what context is
The RFID at custom shop is not inside the guitar in any manner. It travels with the guitar on the taped up neck to show each station its specs. The RFID is discarded after the guitar is completed upon it being cased up
Man, the wild thing about this is that I worked with Dustin just before he moved to Nashville to start working with Gibson. So good to see him doing well out there after 10+ years.
What does a staple pickup sound like? P90? Firebird? Mini humbucker?
Nice question. That would be a great video.
I'd like to know that as well. I think we need Trogly needs to do a comparison with humbuckers/P-90's/mini humbuckers and a staple pickup
Like a Dynasonic. The Staple P90 was Gibson's attempt at copying it. The Lollar P90 comparison video can give you a good idea of the differences.
P90-ish but I’d say a little clearer. I don’t have enough experience because I’ve only played one once but it’s certainly noticeably different from a P90
According to Seth Lover who designed it , it's a more beefy P90, he said he gave it rectangular poles just to make it look different.
Im curious why you threw in some Fender guitars in a Gibson themed vid??
New editor?
5:32 LOL 😂😂😂 Fender > Gibson
@@zaxmaxlax Gotta be joking me....bolt-on screw guitars 😅
Might be worth re-editing this one to linger on the custom shop tour footage rather than cutting back to past random guitars from Fender etc. Feels very strange to watch at the mo
I think ur right!
why the fenders in the clip ? :) its a bit confusing
I know! I thought the same thing! Confused!
I have seen headstocks on Gibsons that had the tuning pegs put on each side of the headstock at different places that did not match.
16:23 On the Gibson Custom Shop tour video at about 10:42 they mention the wood dowels are to assist with aligning the top to the body. 😊
RFID readers are readily available on the web. I don't think the specs will be on that tag. It's probably a tracking and / or serial number that can be used to verify its an actual Gibson and not a Chibson. It can also be used to identify a guitar if it's stolen.
The Gibson Custom Shop video was shot on Thursday, the 30th of November 2023.
what's up with the tuner on the yellow LP custom @1:34 ? It looks like something is sticking out from it?
That burl maple top is SICK!
The green 335 looks like an Ibanez semi hollow from a few years back that I always thought looked really cool 😎. The TV yellow special looks very cool too, mini humbucker and P90 in a special could be the perfect guitar to cover tons of sounds.
Lots of us are drooling over the gold SG with cream P90s! The dowell is probably for the maple cap alignment. Fun discussion of the CS tour.
That gold SG with P-90s is a beauty for sure! I'd like to see them do that one 👍
I have no idea how they never brought back the guitar of the week to test the waters into what sells and what does not
I don't think Custom Shop are the only ones with RFID. You can def buy a scanner and read the data off the chip. I recall seeing a YT video where some very recently produced Gibson USA Les Paul production guitar was getting a neck replacement and also having a chip under the fretboard, so I would expect that all newer (think 2019 forward) Gibsons would have it. However, as others have said it's probably encoded with the serial # or some other tracking/invoice number that ties to a spec sheet stored elsewhere. It's not likely to have a readout of the actual specs.
Good to see Tim and Butch. I worked with them for many years. RL
That tv yellow custom Les Paul is cool.
I'd love to hear that pickup combination.
I'm about to try a Righteous Sounds Diadem set (Staple P90 neck+Wide Range bridge humbucker with staple magnets), and I've been wondering how other humbucker designs would fit with a Staple P90.
Loved that 'crop circle' Star Trek V.
I must have missed this one. Cool video 😎🎸🤘
The Blueburst lp was awesome
Yeah I saw this video on their regular site a long time ago, but thanks anyway !! 🎸
I would like an SG with an Evertune bridge from the factory.
I saw the white Les Paul custom and I was screaming 🔥
Loved that mustang ‼️
Loved the tv yellow lp ‼️👍
So they fill the truss rod channel with a piece of maple? Very interesting :) I always thought the channel was just deep enough to make the top of the rod flush with mahogany neck before they put on the fretboard. Thank you for pointing that out .
I love how you notice the finer details trog, you're a real guitar geek I love it😂
Have a 2004 LP Model in Pelham Blue with brushed stainless trim/pick-guard and can't seem to find another one like it... searched everywhere and had a gent recommend I reach out to you... ever seen one?
Scar my Guitar showed us that regular Gibs9n USA also have RFID chips under the fret board
Sometimes they sure do make guitars that are truly a head scratcher. Kinda like that white Custom with dot inlays & hockey stick headstock. Is that a Rick Derringer model? I just try to imagine being like yeah, that one!
That golden top P-90 61 SG on the rack on the back looks incredible!
Agreed and I can't believe it wasn't mentioned!
If they used encryption, they could release that function in their app. Scan it with your phone.
Nice Fender Telecaster at 5:56 !
Hey trogly, what guitar is this one 0:24 , Id like to hunt one for myself haha
that purple and pink LP Burst....... wow
Thank you.
The dowels (I'm guessing from other builders) are either for reliably and repeatedly locating each body onto a cnc bed for routing wiring+pup cavities, neck pockets, bridge posts etc. Or for locating routing templates onto the body. Im not familiar with which approach Gibson use. You can chop off the ears/dowels later once youve done all the drilling and routing that needs a precise and repeatable location. You dont want to be measuring those elements on each individual body.
I'd love to get a pancake in a standard that is a redish brown to match my Studio. I'm not much on purple on a guitar but that one with the purple neck is cool. I'd think the rfid would be good to track a guitar. I want to see a lp with a staple in the neck a P90 in the middle and a mini humbucker at the bridge. This was quite an interesting video
I would love to see a tour of the Gibson mod shop.
They make Custom Shop Les Pauls with weight relief holes?
Trogly what no mention of that beautiful gold SG Standard with P- 90s?? I would love to see Gibson offer that as like a USA product!
you would need the data base in order to get all the RFID specs.
3:47 Yeah, god forbid you would get your hands on a superior instrument, build by one man, dedicating all his effort to building that one instrument, nursing all the details until perfection, delivering an immaculate end product. Ohh the horrors. 😂😂😂
I know that you mean Trogly, I just couldn’t resist. ❤
Austin, do a video of you building your dream Les Paul with Gibson! If anyone should get a M2M it’s you!
Joe Bonamasa is a brilliant guitarist. he switched to an ES 335 a while back. and he seems to like it.
you have an rfid reader in your phone i would wager... but agreed it might not have the etire spec sheet on there but worth some further digging !!
Trogs you should implement the idea of the radio chip that way they have to buy it through you…
So is there a small maple strip in every Gibson neck? Like a standard 60s? Or just customs.
A 60s Standard will have the maple strip too, yes.
@@raytorvalds3699 nice. Thanks.
Love this passionate geeking out
Ok, i like that alpine white les paul custom with 3 pickups. I always thought, why does the 3 pickup les paul custom only come in ebony and not alpine white.
They were building a guitar for James Bond in that room.
I NEEEEEEED THAT '54 YELLOW LP WITH THE STAPLE PICKUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What's up Troglydites!!
What's the neck pickup on the TV Yellow thingy?
it's a "Staple Pickup".
I'm watching these tours because I want to see a completed LASS Paul. I saw the prototype in the Ben Hikes video, but I've seen no one else show it or mention it.
Those are a decade old. That tour is a reposting from ~2011. Most of the people in that tour are no longer with gibson. I cover the Less Paul in this episode and since a few more have surfaced m.ruclips.net/video/9dMi_m1vuT4/видео.html&pp=ygUSIkxlc3MiIFBhdWwga3Vua2xl
Would be nice to use RFID ad a way to identify stolen guitars too.
It wouldn't be a '54 reissue if they removed the wraparound bridge/tailpiece for a tune o matic.
Then people will putt those chips in fakes
Using a Scotty Cameron Phantom, presumably?
Doesn’t work that way, it’s just an internal RFID tag so you won’t be able to read it the way you’re thinking. It will likely just be numbers and letters that only Gibson can understand unless Randy Leonard can give you the info after you scan it lol
Trogly, Gibson has been doing the RFID chip in the neck for several years now. Sean over at scarred guitar replaced the neck on a 2022 gold top for Brad the guitolotist. There are multiple videos off the restoration on Sean's channel it's called the dumpster paul as it came out of guitar center's dumpster. The RFID is placed under the fretboard. Check it out it's pretty cool. It would be awesome to see you get an RFID scanner and scan all the custom shop guitars that come through the channel.
RFID requires the software to read it, and it has to be connected to Gibson to work properly.
I wish Gibson would make a neck thru series.
scanning will give you a reference number, not all the details (just like when you tag a dog) I just had this crazy vision of all these nerds running around guitar shows with RFID readers like phasers from star trek yelling at each " dude I just found a 44764", "no way" "i just found a 777845", "dude, cool!
Do you name your guitars? If so what are their names?
Now I just saw a Zemaites guitar. What happened Trog??
Yeah man, that wasn't a Zematis.
@@thomaskinne2357 Man, I thought it was. What brand guitar was it?
@@yourstruly5687 I may have been wrong. But Gibson, sure has attempted to do some different things over the years. Apparently he was showing some Fenders in this bit, so maybe it was?
@@yourstruly5687 I'm no fan of this "Gibson Custom" supposedly being of better quality than Gibson USA. Their QC, is questionable at best.
All RFID chips give out to a reader is a number. You need the Gibson database to look-up what the number means.
Why did you show a mocha telecaster at 5:57?
At one time I thought it'd be cool to work at Fender or Gibson, yet I think I might burn out and actually get sick of being around guitars , like working at a restaurant for years then getting sick of the food ...I don't know . Thanks Trog !
Take your chances win or lose them.
Well…if my dog steals my guitar, I’d be able to track them both down 🫤
Chibson is working on your rfid idea as we speak
The rfid it’s very common and high-end handbags sounds weird and asked me why I know this because my wife buys expensive shit and her bags have RF IDs in them. That’s how it was made. What day was made where it was sold the materials and when it’s purchased, they give her registration number which identifies it to her, that be awesome. Forget them because I feel there’s more out there and you don’t really know
Flipper Zero can scan RFID
& finally, some Epiphone LP's with an open book headstock that aren't Epiphone Japan.
Maybe put a QR code under the finish on the back of the neck, for identifying your guitar, not sure if an RF code could be faked, put an apple air drop chip in the cavity right.
The blue and the green finishes don't appeal to me in the least. I mean, if someone offered me one free, I would not accept it, unless to sell it on.
"Unique" means "one of a kind." You mean UNUSUAL.
Thank you! Modern mis-usage is just killing the word.
Why no Fender content? Fender is like the Mountain Dew Code Red of electric guitars.
Liked your comments on the scarred channel
Gibson couldn’t be trusted to have the accurate data on the chip…. That’s the new Firebird XII with the tuning hole template. I wonder if you order extra weight relief, do they make more holes - or make the holes bigger?
always think lp style guitar looks better with p90
Actually it appears Gibson has three channels...
Don't all Gibsons have a RFID under the board?
Wtf? These are cool!
Gibson RFID scanner.. 5k 😅
I'm a bit confused as to why Austin keeps flashing Fender guitars while talking about Gibson's. Am I missing something here?
RFID is read-write you know
great show trogly
Just letting the community know that Chibsons have these chips upon the instructions of the Chinese regime. They are used to scan your phone and collect your data. Algorithms then feed your devices especially children's games. Epiphone and others are also installing these systems.
According to some they add a sweet sustain although that might be subjective.
Rock on but safely.
✌️
Gibson Needs to offer non gibson pickups on the M2M customs
Austin can you ban sgt grinch?
Haaaaaaaaaa!
Whyyyyyyyyyyyy?
@@mknewlan67 simple answer, I’m probably the only person with over 100 first comments and 5 times first 3 comments. Pure jealousy. I’m retired now, but I still watch every episode. Thanks for asking.
@@sgt.grinch3299why would I be jealous of that? That’s just sad. You’re essentially a sentient spam bot that says the same stuff every video, it’s just insufferable at this point.
1 fayal flaw with RFID yes i could be encrypted but also you can still fake it if you want to go through the work to decrypt it.
Gibson needs to come back to Earth with they're Pricing.....GEEZ!!!
Have you not looked around to see that EVERYTHING has gone up? Really? SMH
Bidenomics 😂
Have you looked at other USA manufacturers? Gibson isn't the only one with out of this world pricing.
@@MarkEdward-bl6cr More like Trumponomics. That shit started during the last adminstration.
This is Tymhe custom shop. There is a 2 year waiting list. They are fine
editing mistake? You keep showing Fender guitars while your narration is all about Gibson.
Maybe they were Fibsons! 😀
Woot woot Trogly's guitars 🎸 🙌
Gibson decided to concentrate on making their guitars look old so they are way behind the times on new innovative finishes. PRS, MusicMan and Kiesel have been knocking it out of the park for years so why get excited just because Gibson finally does an aqua burst quilt? Gibson can’t even do a plain finish without messing it up like that 335 you pointed out. That being said, I own many Gibsons and not one PRS, MusicMan or Kiesel lol.
