Dude, this video is like hanging out with a friend. So wholesome
You're so right, I really think it's the secret sauce to his channel. No gimmicks, no bullshit, just hanging out with a pal!
You may need more interesting friends 😜😜

This format is the bomb, man. Literally just feels like my Friday and Saturday nights working on things. And, it's awesome to see a BA like yourself still runs in to the same madness we run into. Random bugs, flooding, missing tools. I like it.
It might be kind of nice for him to narrate a little bit too, working by yourself all the time might start to feel a little isolated. Having the phone recording at least seems a little bit like someone is with you. It'd be cool at first but after a while, I can see kind of missing having some of the other shop folks around.
What's a BA?
@@ianmangham4570 Fair question. I try to keep it relatively clean on folk's pages and resort to abbreviations sometimes. BA stands for Bad Ass. LOL
@@djwickstrom2891 🤣 I thought it was some kind of college degree lmao
@@ianmangham4570 LOL!!!!!
IMO what sets you apart from other automotive channels is your honesty, no one else would say gotta go wifey called issue at the house...
So true.
👍💯
The main reason I love this channel is that Alex doesn't stretch content into 132 videos. "Brake job Part 263 Wait Until You See The Rotors!!!!" isn't a title I'll see here (unless he's ripping on typical RUclipsrs). It's like I'm in the shop "supervising" with a beer in my hand while learning something.
“Love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life.” It looks like you’ve embraced this motto. Keep up the good work!
Work and you'll never do what you love a day in your life.
Do what you love for work, and the increasingly blurred line between your personal and professional life will make it impossible to feel financially or emotionally secure at any point along the way.

AC in a shop is great. So glad to hear you’ve got it when you need it. Gloveworks HD hold up really well for me. They are quite expensive these days, but they work well.
meanwhile the shop I work in still has no ac and the last 2 weeks were all in the 90s with a 100+degree heat index
@@biggiy I don't understand that in hot places. The owners are so cheap they don't realize they're losing 80% of their productivity to save on AC costs.
I seriously love the attitude you have towards your work. I commend you sir. I hope you didn't flood
In some areas in cook county some areas flooded a little but most of us are fine
I don’t understand how you don’t have equally as many followers as Tavarish. You actually WORK on cars. And complete them. This is the best auto channel on RUclips right now.
3 step video, how quaint, I really wonder why mostly everyone else needs to over complicate the process, find the fault, fix the fault, show it working. My father who started wielding spanners in his teens and is now 85 (and still working on vintage cars) looked at you working and nodded his approval, which is his highest praise!
Tool list: 4 inch grinder and a box of thin cutoff discs, grinding & flat sanding discs, flapper/pearl discs and some wire wheels for cleaning bolts and stuff.
I have to say, your videos have gotten better over the last couple months. I watch every video now. Keep it up, man!
Working on the lightning while it was lightning. Great video and a great start to my Saturday.
Best channel by far regarding automotive repair. Legit Street Cars is....legit. So happy Alex left his daytime job :-)
After using a flush product I always do multiple full driving rinses with distilled water. Some fluid always stays in the cooland jacket and if you know there's nothing left but distilled, it's easy to accurately calculate a precise mix. Plus the water is a good indicator, the job isn't done until it comes out clear. Small expense, only a couple bucks per gallon, worth it. Always use distilled water!
Congrats on the rock auto sponsorship and getting your own discount code. Its always annoying looking for that long number string for the discount if your code from the last order expired, and legit is super easy to remember.
I love these videos where you spend the whole video fixing up a vehicle. You have it made with that shop, I'd love to have a shop like that where I can be alone and just tinker with my cars on my spare time.
Alex, I have that same drain pan. I use a new 6" X 9" red Scotch Bright pad on top so that coolant doesn't splash all over the place. It works pretty good.
That's a great idea.
What's the brand for this drain pan? I need this.

Smart!!
You had a Larry David moment at Harbor Freight! … Love it!
Long time fan first time comment. Absolutely love how often you’ve been posting. These videos put a smile on my face. Please keep it up!
Hopefully while you were at home, you loaded up some of the equipment you need for your shop. Love the videos Alex.
One other tip. Replace all the coolant hoses. I noticed that when folks neglect and rust starts, it tends to line all the coolant lines. Easy way to tell, pinch and see if the line makes crunchy noises inside like it is lined with a layer of rust.....cause it is.
If I feel that crunch, I just replace them all before bothering to do coolant update or stat.
The shop looks great! Your toolbox needs stickers to make it “Legit”
I agree
Just not Pokemon stickers 😬
Great Video. Just a little background for someone who is working on this at home. The reason the coolant turns brown is because of rust in the coolant system. When you flush and replace the coolant like this there is a good probability that something will leak afterwards because the flush takes out any rusty portions in the coolant system. Keep a watchful eye on the coolant temperature when driving it afterwards. The new coolant mixed with water will help prevent any future rusting in the system.
The best automotive channel on RUclips. Simple yet interesting work on all types of platforms. Love it. Keep up the good work alex
Some anti-seize woulda been very helpful on everything he replaced the thermostats bolts the shocks
Thickster gloves from Orielly’s are awesome. They’re on the thicker side, but they last a while.
Tattoo artist glove as well they are thick because well punctures.
A great tip is to use a old washer fluid jug....cut out a square out the side and the edges prevent from splashing out.....plus the lid is great for draining with no mess!!
At my wife’s veterinary practice she uses kimtech nitrile gloves.I use them around the house pretty tear resistant.
I have had good luck cleaning rust from reservoirs with an electric power washer sprayed in all the holes. Then pour a little muratic (hydrochloric) acid in and swish it around. Its weak enough to not cause burns. Then rinse a few times adding a little baking soda for the final rinse. Also works great on a cloth to remove rust stains on rubber, plastic, and others areas then followed by a good rinse.
Good stuff as always! Really enjoying the longer videos! A length of hose on the coolant drain will also help with splatter.
A little trick I use when I have to do something messy when not on the lift or without a larger pan it use puppy pads around the smaller pan. They absorb everything and easier than cleaning up the floor.
Always excited for your videos! This is a good one as always
Drill a small hole or 2 in the top of your thermostat for self bleeding of air it works ask Scotty love your work
Love love love this channel!!! I’m often clicking thumbs up before I even get a chance to watch, always great content, you don’t leave us hanging with lil 8 minute videos, stuff gets done!!!! I did the brakes on my car myself because you inspire me, I love cars, far from a mechanic, but Semi-DIY guy lol, Much success to you!
30 mil nitrile is what we used in the oil field and they rock. Lots of edges out there, they hold up 10x better than what my GM technician job provides.
I don't think there's ever been a lightning/terminator owner myself included, who has bought the right blower belt the first time around. As clean as the Lightning is, I have to wonder if you're going to drive it year round? Cool either way, love the videos!
Use a heat gun to restore your black bumper trim to new condition. It brings the component oils it the plastic back out. ✌🏻😎👍🏻
Wrench hint: Get a few cold chisels for your tool box, long and short. Handy when you have to break stuff off/loose and can't get the hammer in there.
When you need a drain pan, but are limited on good choices, a mortar mixing tub from building supply works. Also when transferring containers as a spill pan. I always spill going back into the gallon oil bottle.....
Was watching your amg rebuild video expecting when you'd post a new video. My prayers have been answered lol.
I learned a lot from your channel. Thanks
Dry ice bottom side.
Extensions on drain wipes from gutters. Check gutters for trash. Might be over flowing. Great truck.
Hope everything turned out okay with the basement at home. Love the content, glad you have the opportunity to do this full time.
Great workshop table. The wizard is going to be jealous...
I never understood why people skip on coolant maintenance, replacing coolant every 2 or 3 years is one of the cheapest maintenance and is a must if you want to keep your vehicle.
Love watching you work Alex. You actually know what you're doing and using tried and true trucks of the trade, unlike the majority of RUclipsrs who silly stuff and make a job 10x harder than it has to be. It's great to see a real mechanic teaching simple but effective tricks to get a job done effectively. Great work Alex!
agreed and he gets right to the repair too, not like a certain set of popular youtubers in Tennesse who hop up and down, crazy arm gestures always pushing new merch on a weekly basis and seem like they drank a case of RED BULL before the video,
Your channel is Pretty inspiring.
Such a Humble dude working really hard, but when you're doing what you love i guess its not really "work" is it?
and you're also showing/teaching us along the way.
ICONIC
Great video Alex! Love the L content and looking forward to more. I'm taking notes for my L too. This is probably low priority (maybe someone already mentioned it) but like mine, it looks like your front bumper has a bit more panel gap on the driver side too. I think this is common on Heritage F-150s. I haven't addressed mine yet but if you get to it, I'm curious to see how.
Hope your basement didn't flood and you're able to seal off the Street Quarters from the next heavy rainfall!
Harbor freight 7mil and 9mil gloves. Not cheap, but really durable. I'm often able to reuse them multiple times.
I started following you about a year ago. Content is on point and you keep up with the updates. Glad that everything has worked out for you after deciding to do RUclips full time now. Keep up the great content. Can't wait to hear your impressions about the Lightning after a complete maintenance update.
Cascade or Finish dishwasher soap is your friend for tough flushes. It doesn't bubble up and does an amazing job.
I truly enjoy your down to earth and ’real’ videos; it really puts me in a good mood watching your awesome content. Keep it up Alex, du är bäst!
Alex I pray to God you and your family are OK and weathering the storm without any mishaps or basement flooding. Stay safe dude, family and home always before RUclips and video content!!!
I really just wanted to say I love the channel and I've been following you pretty much since you started. I definitely enjoy the content and how much you bring to this genre of videos. I also see that you seem to be enjoying yourself more. Thanks for bringing us some phenomenal content and being original and informative. Stay safe and keep dry.
Mechanix gloves are your best friend, they stop you getting workshop rash (gashes and cuts) and once you get used to the slight loss of tactial feel, it's pretty decent.
I always wonder where exactly do you guys dispose of all the stuff that comes out of your old and rebuilt vehicles? Between old shocks, rusted out breaks, and all manner of gross old fluids, where does all that stuff go afterwards?
I think it's a law that all businesses that sell motor oil must accept used motor oil from anyone. I take my used motor oil to Autozone or the local chain of quickie lubes. Not sure if they will accept used coolant and differential fluid though.
Anything metal junkers will pick up from you.
@@DC-iq4gf I worked at a quick lube a long long time ago and they would take coolant but sometimes things change.
Pump up garden sprayer can help clean out the tanks while installed. With the tank out, fill with water+Oxyclean or 3% hydrogen peroxide, add a handful of gravel and shake it every which way.
The M12 die grinders have a smaller 2" cutoff wheel and are easier to get into tight spots than the M12 cutoff tool with 3" wheel.
I highly recommend Caterpillar cooling system flush, its not cheap, but it obliterates rust and buildup almost instantly.
These vids are like Saturday morning cartoons, but for adults haha
love the comment
This is one of your best videos ever. I’ve been starting from more recent stuff, and working backwards in an anthology. I like your prudence and practicality of part replacements. Conversely, not skimping with fluids, and replacing seals goes a long way. Great work!
For gloves, Grease Monkeys Gorilla grip, 6 MM. The pack just bring 40, is all you gonna need, I reuse them and keep reuse them. Really good ones.
In trucks I put the axle side on first (especially on a lift). Much easier to compress the shock and control the extension to get it aligned in the top hole. May not have enough room to compress if the truck is on the ground, but typically it works in that situation as well.
Too much limited slip additive does in fact hurt. It can make a LS operate like an open diff no problem. I posted a video showing it, but it got taken down due to background music in my shop.
For gloves, I use the wal-mart three pack for 3 dollars. Nitrile Coated work gloves, they do fine to keep my hands clean, plus they're cheap.
I only use Nitrile / Latex gloves for grease, oils, and chemicals. I work with tractor - trailers and heavy equipment, mainly tire work.
People say that it rains all the time in Seattle, but growing up just south of you in Champaign, I can tell you that the rainstorms in the midwest are epic. We get 36 inches of rain a year...Illinois gets 36" of rain in two months.
Alex, unless you're allergic to latex try Diamond grip gloves. Best, and most durable disposable gloves. I used to give a coworker who bought them a hard time. Then I moved to a shop that provided them, and they were awesome. I understood after that. Just don't switch to the cheap nitrile if using a solvent.
tip from me Alex. next time u open a drain just put a hose on the tip odf the drain. it doesnt splash all over the floor. hope it does help. Awesome episode as always
Alex:
I have found that Astro Grip (8 mil) Nitrile gloves made by SAS Safety Corporation are the best consumer grade gloves currently available. They are orange and sold in boxes of 100. They can be found at your better stocked auto supply stores. On the diff additive, for my '67 Mustang with a Traction Lock differential, the friction modifier additive sold over the counter at your local Ford Dealer branded by Motorcraft is the one that works and lasts. After a series of low speed figure eights in both directions the clutches absorb enough of the friction modifier to remain quiet (no chatter in low speed corners) in day to day operation. Lastly, on your shop flooding, I suggest you see about getting sandbags that can be laid down as a dam across the door openings to keep the water out of the shop. As for the roof leak, check to make sure the scuppers and down spouts are flowing freely as even partially clogged downspouts can result in a build up of water on a flat roof and can find flashing and vents which are at less than 100% solid.
Regards, Jeff
I fixed everything on mine... now it has a SVO fully forged short block, studded TF heads, custom cams, custom fuel system, 2400 stall and a built transmisson and a 3.4 whipple. RUNS LIKE A LIGHTNING SHOULD!
Use some steel wool to help with the splashing when draining fluids.
Alex, I own a few warehouses like your shop. The problem with the water is that you need a drip rail or flashing installed over the man door and bay door. Put them on and that will keep a lot of the water out.
All the things that changed from 2000 to 2002 Amazing. Belt change, I've had to get a lock wrench for the crank pully to get the belt off. I've still got paint on the Springs, Sch'dy NY. No rain or snow. Oh well.!
I don’t feel so bad now. I just flushed an 07 Grand Prix 7-8 times, and was beginning to think I had bigger issues. Nice truck btw!
TGC® Black Nitrile Disposable Gloves
I use these everyday on Heavy equipment in Australia, hands down the best Disposable I’ve ever used.
Venom Steel Nitrile Gloves is what I use. Tear eventually but pretty good. I put on mech gloves over top when working with chassis parts to keep hands clean and keep gloves from tearing.
Tip, just put running gardenhose top radiatorhose untill clear water, than bottom drain plug open and flush untill water clears ,even flush true thermostathousing, and keep flushing untill clear ,good luck, and great jobs thank you !
Orange Gripper Nitrile Tyre Tread Disposable gloves, use them working on my cars last well and the tread helps with grip
The orange gloves with the grippy surface on them are my favorite.
True wrenching 'tubers always get 👍👍👍👍👍. No flash or waving hands and yelling, just true wrenching. Keep the vids coming.
That White fluid sucker is very usefull. We have it on our garage too. It can go tight places too with that long hose.
From RoackAuto I put brakes and rotors all the way around for $254 to my door. None of my local parts stores have been that cheap. I didn't get the economy set either. Mid grade carbon ceramic. It's been about 9 months and I have no complaints.
About the front shocks, a thought the top of the piston rod has a hex type nut fited so you can put a Socket on top of it then a wrench on the main nut in order to keep the piston rod from spinning.
Put a cup of Ty-D-Bowl into the reservoir. Sounds crazy, but if you have an outboard engine that is overheating due to plugged passages, this is one way to clean out the spooge. I'm sure it will work on this engine as well.
I live close to you. Kick the sump pump, the float gets stuck with just a little sludge once it's loose it's fine. Then get used to cleaning it once a season.I had Speed do our caprice as well.
For gloves, google Emerald Total-Max Hi Risk gloves. They’re blue. I’ve used them for years and have zero complaints. 15mil thick but have excellent feel.
I had Accel coils for over 50k miles. They didn't feel bad until I replaced them with the OEM Motorcrafts, made a huge difference.
I would run Motorcraft gold coolant instead of the green.
I just swapped out my garage door bottom rubber seal on my home garage door. Wasn’t a fun solo repair as you really need four hands but it has made a difference in the amount of water that comes in during storms. might not have helped all that much with the storm you experienced - that was coming down in buckets. $30 fix off Amazon. The old one was only 7 years old but totally shot. Might help with possible pests too - I had a mouse find its way in last winter. I left it an eviction notice and sealed up all possible entrances.
Cog pulley systems sound amazing on these trucks! You need the EGR delete, do the turkey pan mod, and clean out the intercooler. I bet it’s caked in oil.
My dad used to clean those coolent tanks with coarse salt! I'm still doing it and it does wonders
As someone who owns a warehouse, it's cheaper to run AC 24/7 than it is to turn it on when it's hot. Tested that it costs around $500/month when I run it 24/7 and around $700 when I turn it on around 10am and off around 8pm, for 6 days. It kicks on when it reaches 85 and cools it down to 75-80. Without it, the shop gets up to 115 and seems like it doesn't get cool for 4-5 hours when we did turn it on in the morning and off at night. Try it out for yourself though. See if it works for you.
24:30 this is why you leave the strap on the shock, hang the top, then snip the strap and as the shock expands put it in place of the lower bolt and quickly stick it through as it lines up for a split second...
I was used to use Harbor Freight gloves which weren't horrible but they are just like everything else there. Now I use gloves from Uline and I've been very happy with them. I'm not a mechanic just a guy that likes working on cars. I have a lift and quite a bit of tools so I'm more than your average guy working on their car but just wanted to be clear that I'm not a pro. I have been very happy with those Uline Secure Grip Nitrile 8 mil gloves. They don't rip easily while giving me plenty for feel.
Nice truck. I am also a Lighting owner, bought mine brand new in 2000. White. It just turned over a 100k. Still love to drive it. It is a Florida truck, very clean. Those Michelin tire are the wrong size, Michelin doesn't make the correct size. Should be be 295/45 zr18, should help a little on the traction. Very little choices in tires, I think Toyo makes the last set I pursed. ENJOY
Hello from France, for your gloves, use the ignite nitrile glove from Aurelia Gloves, they are heavy duty and can be use several times. Unfortunately, we can not find them anymore in Europe due to Covid... your show is great ! and hope your basement is not too flooded.
Hey Alex Dietrich put about 2 gallons of white distilled vinegar in a radiator get it warm and let it sit overnight and what you said about the blower belt first of all I hope you save those for in case of emergencies for roadside repairs but always remember as long as you can can say kind of dumb it's not as bad as it could be
Be grateful for that rain 😢 it's really dry here, this year was specially dry.
Best gloves I have found are Venom Steel Industrial 2 layer Nitrile. The white interior makes them slide on easier than any other glove, as well.
Also, for most general mechanical work, I have always used Atlas fit 300 gloves....best work glove ever made, and they're washable!
You should probably try to find old road kill or engine masters episode where they tested mechanical fan vs electrical. The difference was huge. Electrical was eating like 1hp and mechanical 10hp. Probably one of the best performance/fuel economy upgrades.
I gotta say. Your attitude about what you do and being an American is too awesome for words. Glad you are here Alex. Not only here doing what you love every day and making killer content but glad you are here in this great country man. Fuckin' murica.
Hey Alex. I work for BMW and we use gloves called HyFlex. They are amazing. They are really stretchy and withstand a lot off beating. Also they are thin and have great grip. I recommend them!
When doing rear shocks, I find it easier to attach the bottom first and then the top, because instead of pushing up on the bottom you are pulling down on the top and using your body weight!.....We sell an orange 8 mil nitrile glove for $267.20 per case of 10/100's plus frt....so find 10 friends that want a really strong nitrile glove
Diamond Grip gloves have always done right by me. I rarely rip one.
Love the truck!
