  • Should You Read Cradle Ghostwater? Book five of the cradle series is another step in this journey for Lindon through this progression fantasy series. I'm super excited to bring you another quick review today of this novel, I've got a few problems with it, but overall I still enjoyed this book a lot! Of worst books of a series so far, this is still super close in the running for a good book, just not what I was hoping for in this narrative style.

I love that Will Wight's writing is so quick but at least at a level where if you like it or not it's largely an issue of taste. It's not my favorite book in the series, but I like the hyperbolic time chamber feel a lot. I think it was my favorite at the time, but it's not 'good' like I thought the rest of Cradle was 'good'.

I really like your perspective on this. I also didn't think that this was Will's strongest Cradle book, especially so when I re-read the series again (and many more times after that haha). One thing that always kind of bothered me, was that if the Beast King that sponsored Ziel knew about the wells, why didn't they loot the actual water? How did so much of it build up for 50 years since Dross was thrown in the well? The Life Well alone would have been invaluable for building up stronger forces. Ziel had only 6 vials? not a void key of barrels? It made me feel like this pocket world wasn't AS valuable as it was made out to be. Plus.... What were the other people doing? Lindon killed the dragon, yes, and we saw Ziel just vibing, but what about the other ones? What did the Red Moon Hall girl do the entire time? Even Harmony? What was he doing for the entire time he was there? He took a tour yes, but then what?
I did like that the separation of Lindon and Yerin was important. It made both of them grow as a person. Being able to better heal with loss and progress was vital to get the pace of the story going, and this is a clear tipping point in the series for both of them, but I do agree that the style was done in a way that ..... made it feel like a brute force. Instead of an organic progression it was literally chugging down plot potions.

Oh that's a really good point about the other members of this looting squad, I didn't really think about that especially because London constantly describes most of the place as already looted. And yeah....you'd think these wells and those dream tablets would be a bit more prized. I think perhaps the doors were locked and dross helped? But that still leaves the initial well having no reason to be so full yeah...really good points!

Locked doors, abandoned facility, 1st well was insignificant for the True Golds who got sent for looting

The key point is that these thing are valuable to Lindon. However, everyone who enters Ghostwater either has a direct connection to a VERY powerful sacred artist, Heralds/Sages at the lowest, or we’re the Monarchs and such who looted it originally. So, why would they care for these specific materials? The truegolds are at a level that can’t be passed with Madra levels, only with soul fire and personal introspection. Meanwhile, the Sages/Heralds/Monarchs have absolutely no need of these for themselves, and they have enough sheer resources that if they wanted to, they could sponsor anyone they wanted on their own. And finally, for anything from those wells that were taken, it’s important to remember that they were capable of refilling.

Nice talk! Just a smol correction: Orthos is a secret animal/beast, not a remnant.

I agree with you. Now I'm not a literary analyst, but I like this series a lot. But they are more like a guilty pleasure, they're not super deep, there's very little actual complex mystery, and there are no real easter eggs. They're entertaining though, like a shoot em up movie! Lol. But that's why I like them.

Oh 100% I agree I describe them when I rec them as low brain, but I do think Will Wight is very skilled at writing despite those things. My goal isn't to uhm, like analyze something and be like 'ah this is low brain so it's bad' I really look to praise good writing craft where I can, and I think Will Wight is hitting his niche near perfectly, even if this book wasn't as amazing as I had hoped it's still really good.

Before wintersteel a large portion of the cradle community put this as the best book in the series. I’m not one but be prepared for pushback! The next book in the series is my favorite!
