    I’m pretty sure someone already commented this but in Hilda bergs fight if she goes into the Gemini in the 4th phase then the orb will only start shooting from the north or south so if you position yourself on the east or west then it will be very easy to dodge it cause you will always have time to react

    Boss by boss? That's a lot of work dude but I'm glad you made it! Here are some points I thought I should point out to inform everyone.
    41:21 You can actually touch the sticks coming out from the wall, only the spinning bottle caps hurts you. Couldn't blame you, I myself never realized you can walk pass under his seat, I thought it was lethal. Game has this inconsistency on showing what can and cannot touch in the environments. The red corals you pointed out is another example.
    1:01:00 The blue chips are actually not RnG based. They come down in order either starting from the left, or right. After finishing a cycle, it restarts.
    I guess that's all I have to contribute. Other than that, your dissections are very informative. The frame by frame showcase is a fun little segment for such a long video. And of course, it befits a game that has such high emphasis on its art style and animation.
    Lastly, thank you so much for the shoutout Corvus !

      Ah, crap, I just assumed the poker chips were random, I can't believe I didn't notice. Thanks for pointing that out! And I'm glad to hear the frame-by-frame came out well. Thanks for watching :)

      Corvus Analyzes well, maybe it is jus me, but personally I never stumble across impossible scenario with moving platforms. With reaction,jump, dash, air dash and ability to fell under platform I always had opportunity to dodge, even with big gaps, that could be seen and telegraphed. Multitasking is the thing.
      And yeah, one more thing, really stumbling that video don't have proper conclusion. Just dry scroll of pros and cons without proper final. Don't really satisfying.
      But still, great video.

    • @DesignFrameCaseStudies
      @DesignFrameCaseStudies  6 лет назад

      At first I did think that way until I came across those ginormous gaps. Maybe impossible is the wrong word, maybe just unreasonable. I had a hard time coming up with a conclusion at all due to the video's format; the video originally had no conclusion even. I'm always looking to improve so I appreciate the comments :)

    Overall it's a decent video to an extent but I don't feel like you fully grasped all the nuance of the game. The mechanics only come fully together when trying to S rank the bosses, otherwise a lot of important stuff just comes off as weird/random. My main critique of your analysis is that you state way too many opinions/anecdotal things/untrue things as if they are facts. Analysis implies some sort of objective approach. I'm also a big fan of Joseph Anderson and I think looking at how he makes sure things he's not 100% sure of, or are just his opinion, or an incidental experience he had he makes sure to state that as such. I highly recommend copying that style because you're otherwise well on the right track. My biggest complaints about Cuphead are the inconsistent ducking telegraphs, the foregrounds blocking things, and the game doing a poor job of easing in brand new players who struggle even on the first couple of bosses. Some bosses have bugs/weirdness about them that makes them way too easy, especially the Devil who is a really disappointing final boss. The only places I feel RNG really was a problem is on the few bosses where it's possible for them to not spawn enough objects for you to actually get an S rank on them.
    Because I'm obsessed with Cuphead I have more detailed thoughts but you don't really have to read them.
    The second phase of the frog brothers has variable amounts of attacks depending on your damage leading up to it. It's not *always* just 2, sometimes it's 1 or even 0 if you're fast enough, or more if you're slower. That's worth pointing out. Incidentally if you parry the handle as soon as it shows up you always get the green pattern.
    Taurus is a lot less cheesable when you actually get there in game because you don't have bombs at that point. The "decision" to make it easy if you go back with bombs is kind of a meaningless distinction. This phase doesn't happen on expert mode so (or at least I've never had slow enough dps to see it if it does show up) so I think they were aware of how weak it is if you're not forced to stand in front of it to damage it.
    Gemini's thunder attack *is* predictable. On normal it always starts shooting straight up or straight down, you can even see that in the clips you chose. On expert it always starts shooting in one of the four diagonal directions. The only flaw of it that I see is that you can actually stand in the glowing ball part of it for some reason. Also the patterns for the little spawning ships isn't just "oh that's interesting" but a way to control parry spawning, I can't tell you the rhyme or reason of those patterns but every 4th purple ship shoots a parryable bullet and that's significant enough to point out.
    Baron von Bon Bon's expert mode starts with jellybeans the whole time, that's a pretty notable change. Most of expert mode seems to be about parry spawns and those pink jelly beans are a significant source of them in this fight.
    Beppi's dogs have the chance to just randomly pop up exactly where you're jumping. You can avoid the yellow horse + roller coaster by controlling your dps carefully in theory, though I never bothered to test this out.
    I'm really not sure it's fair to say you never need to use the little plane on Djimmi's stupid transition phase, especially on expert. His pyramids don't attack "in a random direction," it's the same attack every time.
    Wally Warble's second phase isn't "random," it's a specific bullet hell pattern. The nailbirds aren't just random throwaway additions, they provide a source of parries which going after is risky but gives you more dps, however they also serve as meatshields for the boss that lower your dps. Perhaps for a basic run through you can more or less ignore them, but optimizing them is key to mastering the game.
    Grim Matchstick's flamethrower never hits the top level of clouds, making that attack very easy to dodge and manage. The jumping fires in phase don't really telegraph their direction. Worth noting is the frustrating lack of parryable objects sometimes on expert mode, forcing many restarts. This is the true RNG bullshit of the game and you don't even touch it.
    Honeybottom's first phase again is crucial for getting your 3 parries in, and it's not just filler especially on expert. And expert maybe makes a small amount less platforms spawn, but that was just bad luck/bad crisis management you showed. I wager there isn't a single pattern of platforms in either of these two bosses that can't be dealt with with proper preparation and reaction time, thanks to the generous distance a jump + dash takes you.
    The rat's second phase is, again, manageable, I don't think it's entirely rng or bullshit. I won't argue it isn't flawed on some level, but given that you can consistently get past it without taking damage with enough practice it is solvable.
    The robot's second phase is a nice breather after the intensity of the first phase so you can calm down, focus, and get ready for the marathon of hell in front of you. The fight would feel much worse without that break. On expert with good dps the second phase barely lasts two patterns worth, it's very, very short.
    No mention of how the pirate ship's laser can't be ducked under in expert mode? Definitely a major change. I also think the periscope is a terrible telegraph for the dogfish, if you happen to see it it's great, otherwise it's very very easy to miss.
    I don't feel like you do any actual analysis of Calla Maria. It really feels that by this point in the video it's more "here are my feelings on cuphead bosses" as opposed to analysis of them. The ghosts do not require you to be pressed up against the wall to dodge, it just might feel that way at first. She's one of the most bullshit bosses in the game to S rank only because she's not guaranteed to spawn 3 parryable attacks, and even if she does they can be in impossible to reach places. Everything else is telegraphed, the turtle isn't "rng bullshit" (he attacks with the same exact pattern three times, where's the rng?)... and the green shit can be dodged with perfect positioning in the last two phases. Otherwise it's a matter of knowing where the bullets/obstacles will be and lining yourself up to be safe when you get petrified, which comes at a relatively consistent timing. Hard? Yes. Unavoidable bullshit? Absolutely not.
    Sally's first phase has some major RNG regarding heart spawns. If she only does the attack once or even zero times you can't S rank her that run. Fun. Roses in the last phase are important because they're the only other parryable object in the fight. Getting there on a two heart run becomes a frustrating game of "dodge until a pink rose happens to spawn in an accessible space," on a one heart run it's better to just retry instead of hoping for god RNG. Probably the second most RNG bullshit boss in the game behind Calla.
    Train's third phase is made a joke by the fact his lightning can't hit you if you hug either edge, and the ghosts no longer pose a real threat of moving you. Final phase just repeats the parry gimmick from the frog brothers. The additions of pumpkins throughout the fight on Expert really changes the feel of the whole thing.
    Incidentally I found the drinks the easiest of the first three bosses on King Dice. The 8 ball is a total joke of a fight. Worth noting is how buggy his final phase is, he often just stops attacking altogether.
    The bug with the dragon transformation doing damage for no reason is only on the left side of the stage, and it's avoidable with good timing. Definitely annoying. The imps add challenge to what would otherwise be a joke of a first phase. I happened to find the one flame pattern you liked to be the hardest to deal with, for whatever reason. Phases two and three the poker chips follow a set pattern, they're not RNG. The third phase is really manageable if you just kill the big guys as they spawn since the poker chips are so predictable. Last phase the tears are a weird shade of pink but still obviously pink. Are there really ones you can't parry? I never felt like that was the case. I also did this fight with p. sugar so tears spawning on top of me was only beneficial.

      I appreciate taking the time to write everything out. That’s quite the essay you got there!
      First of all, I did A rank most bosses and played through the game twice plus more for footage sake. Considering most people aren’t going to S rank the bosses, let alone play Expert mode, I don’t think designing around such “nuance” is good design, even if what you say is the case.
      I’ll make sure I get better at expressing opinions, thanks for that feedback.
      Before responding to the individual bosses, I do want to say that I did know about how some bosses just don’t give enough objects to parry unless you stop shooting. That’s a point I decided not to hit. If I could go back and add those points in, I definitely would upon reflection.
      Ribby: Yeah it’s not always 2, but that still demonstrates how ridiculous it is. There are some aspects that I assumed was random but ended up not, and I’m sad to say that the slot machine was one of them.
      Taurus: I can’t believe that completely flew over my head. That completely changes the phase, my bad.
      Gemini: It may be predictable, again I should've paid attention for a pattern, but just the fact that it’s possible to cheaply hit before any pattern can be noticed is bad design, and that’s considering if the player actually notices a pattern and doesn’t think it’s random.
      I did notice, however, that the fireball can vary in location (which happens quickly), so the fireball not damaging the player makes sense in that regard. It could also be quite the sour hit if it’s the first time someone is playing this boss.
      Bon Bon: Yeah, that’s something I removed from the script. I just didn’t think it was an important enough distinction considering Bon Bon’s expert mode is practically the same.
      Beppi: I have noticed that about the dogs, so you make a good point. The yellow horseshoes I’ve seen used as an unavoidable damage example in the couple of Cuphead videos I watched regarding difficulty, so I’m not alone on that one. Every time the yellow horseshoes and roller coaster collides, it never ends well for me.
      Djimmi: I judge Expert difficulty separately. Regular difficulty, that transition phase definitely doesn’t need the little plane. Still a waste of time in my book. I didn’t say the pyramids were random, I said that there’s no indication of what they’re going to do and what direction they’re going to shoot in, which is a problem unless you’ve faced the boss before and already know.
      Wally: I called second phase a bullet hell, not necessarily random. You described the second phase’s birds pretty well, I must admit. The bullet sponge idea never crossed my mind.
      Grim: True about the flamethrower, although I focused on the break in between blasts. The fireballs definitely do telegraph their direction and are easily dodgeable, although it becomes harder to dodge depending on the equipped weapon due to the multitasking.
      Honey: I would argue that the first phase is not a necessary evil for the sake of parrying. Parryable objects should be managed better instead.
      Rat: Yeah, my argument is that it’s possible for a cheap shot, although very unlikely. The fact that his platform can crush you when you beat his second phase is what kills the phase for me, even though it sounds minor.
      Robot: I still find it an annoying transition phase, similar to Djimmi’s. The only breaks the bosses usually give are in-between phases, so I don’t think a breather phase is necessary, although I can’t deny that would be the only benefit of that transition phase. I think the cons outweigh the pros.
      Pirate: That’s a cool Expert mode change; wish I noticed that one. The dogfish periscope is pretty prominent, and if not then the sound is pretty distinct so it’s hard to miss.
      Cala: The ghosts definitely press you up against the wall. Even if I’m wrong, it’s definitely not a fun move, especially when combined with the pufferfish and the turtle. As a Soulsborne fan, I’m all for challenge, but they move so incredibly fast it’s just extremely limiting. Of course, I’m fully aware that my opinion here may not be shared. As far as the stone, even if you try to line yourself up, the stars won’t always align. I also don’t consider mashing buttons fun.
      Sally: Yeah, her pink objects are atrocious.
      Train: Very true. And the frog slot machine I could’ve snuck in.
      Dice: Yeah, 8 ball is a joke. I never encountered that King Dice bug.
      Devil: Yeah, left side only, which is why I showed the dragon on the right side for dodging. I felt like the imps were just sloppily added in. That one flame pattern I agree is definitely the hardest to deal with, until I realized that parrying the middle flame made it much easier, and I liked that challenge. Felt like actual learning, rather than cheap or frustrating. I can’t believe I missed the poker chip pattern, thanks for pointing that out. The third phase I definitely wish I expounded. Some of the tears shine, some don’t, but either way they’re not obvious that they can be parried to me, considering they’re a non-typical shade of pink.
      I’ll definitely try to improve for the upcoming videos. This Cuphead video was a toughie due to the format, so I’m glad you took the time to watch and comment. Thanks again :)

    I really gotta say that your narration was almost ASMR, guy. It kinda made your video sound dry and exhausting. Add some emotion to your VO!
    But all things considered, the depth you went into with each boss was fantastic. I had no idea that some bosses had entirely different attack patterns in higher difficulties, and I think you analyzed each boss very fairly based on their patterns and emphasis on RNG. If you can just spice up your narration, you'll take off. I reckon you didn’t know about secret phases at the time of writing this.
    In addition to Cagney, if you let a pink seed sprout, a flying flower appears like normal. But if you parry the second pink seed, and then let a third pink seed sprout, you’ll have two flowers. Keep repeating this and you can have dozens of flying flowers.
    Wow, I guess they removed the swords when you fly behind Djimmi in phase 1 cause I’ve never seen that happen when I play.
    The blaze brothers also share a gameplay flaw like the skeleton. If you stay on the very edge of the screen, the lightning won’t hit you.

    The phases are progressed through by damaging the boss. the Djinn guy's second phase doesn't happen until after you beat the first phase by damaging the boss and going though a short "detour" through the pillars. The pillars isn't a time where you can damage the boss, so it's not a "phase" at all.

    • @DesignFrameCaseStudies
      @DesignFrameCaseStudies  6 лет назад +1

      Arguably you could say that shooting his totem faces does damage to the boss. Despite that, I would still argue that it's an unnecessary phase / segment altogether.

      @@DesignFrameCaseStudies interesting response considering you criticised a lot of that fight in this video. I know this was made a while back, so maybe your opinion has changed over time.
      I was gonna post another comment but i'll just respond in this reply. I was gonna say how i'm happy your VO has gotten more personality since this video, and that aside from your opinion slightly clouding analysis towards the end, especially in the case of the devil where it was pretty obvious you just didn't like it, this was a good video and i really liked the frame by frame showing normally unseen details.
      Your DLC video was a lot more focused and made more valid criticisms over the imbalance of the OP items, but this one is still good.

    • @DesignFrameCaseStudies
      @DesignFrameCaseStudies  9 месяцев назад

      @@noname-jt6kl Yeah, I consider my old videos to not be very good. I'm afraid to revisit what I thought of the bosses haha. I appreciate the comment on the VO. I used to struggle a lot with it! It's super difficult to get right.
      I just read what I said about the devil boss and I don't like what I wrote lol, but I do stand behind a couple of the Phase 1 attacks being trial & error. The rest of the boss is fine though. I don't think there's actually RNG in Phase 3 but I'd need to replay it. It's difficult to tell which tears are pink in Phase 4, but it's also a great and very fitting last phase.
      I mention a few base game bosses in the upcoming DLC video which may differ from this video. I was thinking of Unlisting this one, but I figured I'd keep it to maintain some of the channel's history.

    Amazing video. I agree with the comment about your voice acting though.
    Is there any chance you will do this with the game Hollow Knight sometime in the future. I'd probably be very interesting to see a long boss analysis.

    46:12 You can dash while ducking under the beam, it's pretty useful.
    1:00:23 Not unless you shoot the little devils, which is easy to do since you can turn while ducking.

    • @DesignFrameCaseStudies
      @DesignFrameCaseStudies  Год назад +2

      I'm guessing the dash animation clips through the beam though, so it's not intuitive and it's a fault if that's intended. I'm guessing it's not needed though, if you plan ahead and don't stand under the barrel which I'm assuming is why I'm criticizing it. So the boss is probably fine.
      I probably forgot I could do that? I don't remember.

      Depends on how the RNG is handled. It needs to be clearly telegraphed and non- trial & error. Regarding the RNG platforms, I'm willing to admit I have faulty ground to stand on with those examples, enough to where I shouldn't have made that point.

    Ik it's been 4 years but I don't understand the thought process behind the carrot being an insult to Hinduism particularly in regards to Shiva. The third eye is a concept seen in many cultures and religions, the most common for the western world probably being the cyclops, something that here is more familiar than a goddess in Hinduism. A simple third eye on a carrot (which is a reasonable boss when the setting is a vegetable garden and likely has nothing to do with phallic inferences) is not enough to make the stretch that it's a mockery of Shiva.

    • @DesignFrameCaseStudies

    I enjoyed the video, but just stating things are fun or not, you´re entlited to your opinion, but I just enjoyed the whole game to be honest. The cheap parts are important also, life isn´t fair you know?

    • @DesignFrameCaseStudies
      @DesignFrameCaseStudies  6 лет назад +1

      True. "Fun" isn't quantifiable. If I could go back, I would definitely flesh out some of those "fun" parts.
      Although I will say that cheap isn't fair nor fun, and just because life is cheap doesn't mean the games we play should reflect that, especially when games that are realistic are often boring.

    I think the frame by frame is unnecessary. You can just analyze gameplay, it’s ok. I won’t get bored as long as you’re giving points that aren’t obvious, and backing those points up with examples.

    • @DesignFrameCaseStudies
      @DesignFrameCaseStudies  4 года назад

      I added the Frame By Frame sections whenever I spotted animation frames I wanted to share because of how interesting they are. Are they unnecessary? Probably. But Cuphead is a unique beast and opportunity that I don't want to pass up on. When I remake this video, I'll re-evaluate the frame stuff.
