If you liked this character design, you might enjoy cult fave The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension!, starring Peter Weller, Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Lloyd, Ellen Barkin and John Lithgow as the most over-the-top villain I can think of offhand. The movie is absolutely bonkers, and the aliens, the Red Lectoids, all named John Bigboote, are a marvel of 80s makeup and prosthetics, and reminiscent of They Live. Earth Girls Are Easy, also with Jeff Goldblum, has a similar thing as well, and is, IMO, a criminally overlooked 80s comedy gem.

I love the shot where he looks at money and it's a white piece of paper with the words "THIS IS YOUR GOD" on it.
As much as people love Carpenter's The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, and Starman, they all lost money initially. This film and Prince of Darkness were Carpenter's return to lower budget, more manageable films and more creative control.
The look of the aliens reminded me of the Mars Attacks! aliens without the bulbous heads. Maybe Carpenter was a fan of the trading cards.

Your guess is pretty correct. Vince McMahon is a control freak. Back when he took over the WWF from his father there were many wrestling territories. The WWF was the most well known was known as New York. Vince went on to absorb most other territories through higher paychecks and major events. He then went on to side projects. In the planning was a movie company when Roddy wanted to do this movie. He has started a WWE movie production company that is moderately successful. It's not great but it profits better than the XFL that he tried.

Matthew, you were correct about the WWF/WWE having their own film production. And yes, Vince McMahon did have extensive involvement in the production of No Holds Barred. By the way, whether Piper was wrestling in WWF/WWE, or WCW, he was famous for his great one-liners. And actually, one of Piper's signature moves in wrestling, was the Three Stooges style poke in the eyes. (Hogan always had the funniest reactions to that.)

Hey Emily, hey Matthew, first of all: Awesome reaction! And I want to say thank you for the recommendations there at the end! There is also a French Synthwave artist going by the name Carpenter Brut. His tracks are heavily inspired by Carpenter but also many other 80s movies, especially in the horror/action/exploitation genre. In case you have played the Hotline Miami games or the game FURI, you will have heard some of his music, too, along with pieces of many other Synthwave artists. - And to the topic of Wrestling (or Wrasslin'!): Emily, if you are interested in this to some people very strange subculture, I wholeheartedly recommend the 30 minute video "Professional Wrestling is stupid and beautiful and I love it" by the RUclipsr Super Eyepatch Wolf, whom you might have heard of. It's very informative, but also funny and even emotional. And as he states right at the start: It's not meant to convert you into a wrestling fan, but to explain why so many people are. AND there is a bit about Roddy Piper in there, too! - I guess, a reaction video to that is too much to ask, especially bc wrestling copyright is a REAL pain the ass, but a modest man can hope. :D Anyway, thank you again and all the best.

the way to play Hop Scotch was you had a coin that you would throw down the pattern. Where ever it landed you had to hop scotch to a spot near it and pick it up. If you fell you were out, pick it up you continued the pattern till you got back to safe. Obviously you tried to toss the coin near the double squares so it was easier to pick up, near the single squares was much harder because you had to stay up on the leg you landed on. You would get points for the farther out you tossed it and how close you were to the coin to pick it up. Close to the edge of the playing area was the most points and if it landed and stayed on a square that was the least points. Yeah it was a silly game if you didn't know the rules but if you did it was actually quite challenging. I know this because I grew up poor in Nebraska and it didn't have to be a coin you tossed, anything hard and basically round would do. Using wood coins would work, you just didn't get as many points because they didn't roll or bounce as much as far as something metal. Now back to the least appreciated John Carpenter film he made outside of the stupid Mars one and Escape from LA

We had two other variations of hopscotch (though the one you describe was the most popular, though we used a bean bag instead of a coin). One was each person would try to hop faster each time without their feet touching a line, and any single spaces, you had to alternate feet. If you messed up, you were out.
The other version was one person hops on the squares any way they want, and the next person had to repeat it. Almost like a dance-off, lol. This one was probably the least-played one I saw.

    • @naiaddore1797

Didn't cost any money (other than the chalk) and it made the time pass quick as we watched my friends not be able to do what I could. I was a master at my style of hop scotch. Keith had been in the first games playing another character, and they even reference this a couple time saying he sounds like this other person they knew.
Later in the game, something happen that requires you to fight keith, but, you don't fight keith. Roddy Piper shows up out of nowhere and decides to help you fight keith, and it goes into a full reenactment of that scene from They Live. It's really not anti-Capitalist, since Carpenter doesn't have any issue with people making money or selling a product. It's against Corporatism, which is itself an anti-capitalist collectivist ideology, since it operates by attempting to distort and control a free market. John Carpenter was against the rampant Corporatism of the 80's, where corporations were expanding and gaining control over modern society. Carpenter since then, became a Libertarian, and continues to hold his anti-Corporatism views. It was corporations that are the reason he fought constantly to make his films his way.

Saw this as a kid on cable. Always loved it. Helped that I was already a big fan of Mr. Piper And a very important movie IMHO.
Remember getting my buddy (a film student) into Carpenter movies, he thought they would be cheesy. I was working as the Video Replenishment Buyer for Virgin Megastore (Biggest Video Department in all of Nevada, I kicked Tower Records ass when it came to selection and hard to find stuff).
Before the store opened for the day, I had put on a dvd compendium called Ultimate Fights Vol.1 to play over the video displays in the store. The They Live! Fight was playing. My buddy (who was the book buyer) saw this and tracked me down.
"Dude, what movie is that. That looks brutal!"
"WHAT!?! you never seen They Live!"
"No I never watched it. Who did it?"
"Dude! That's John Carpenter, he fucking awesome."
"Oh. I only seen Halloween....I think"
    "How is that possible?"
I explain the story of the movie and show him the dvd box
"Dude, John Carpenter movies are just fucking great man. I will say that some of his can bit cheesy, but he always worked with tiny budgets. That way he could do what he wanted. And while his movies seem cheesy with the effects (They could be better, but they where serviceable and sometimes just fucking cool) at times, Carpenter knew how to make the most of what he had to work with. And he does the music. Simple but just fucking cool (we both liked Hardcore Techno and ambient stuff like FSOL). And the story is, look if you like 1984, you will love this."
I ran over to the PC games and grabbed a copy of Duke Nukem.
"Where do you think this guy came from? His most famous line and some of his look, comes from They Live!"
My buddy became a big fan of Carpenter's movies and music. An he yelled "Fuck Yhea!" at Piper giving the camera the finger to the Aliens at the end.

Hopscotch you throw a pebble onto the numbered squares in order each turn and retrieve it as you return. If, while hopping through the court in either direction, the player steps on a line, misses a square, or loses balance, the turn ends. First one through the sequence wins.

As others have said, Vince McMahon is a major control freak. So much so, in fact, that he tried to prevent Bob Remus (aka Sgt. Slaughter) from being the spokesperson for GI Joe back in the 1980s. He also tried to prevent Jesse "The Body" Ventura from being in "Predator" (1987) with Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ventura would also appear with Schwarzenegger in "The Running Man" (1987), two movies on your "to watch" list.
In complete fairness to Vince, he may have inherited at least some of his being a control freak from his father, Vince Sr. After all, Vince Sr. ended up firing Hulk Hogan from the WWF when Hogan appeared in "Rocky 3" (1982) with Sylvester Stallone. While WWE Studios didn't officially form until 2002, as Matthew mentioned, Vince was listed as an executive producer for "No Holds Barred" (1989) under the banner name of "Shane Distribution Company." (Shane is the name of Vince's son)
As Matthew said, there's an entirely different discussion to be had regarding how some wrestling promoters treat their wrestlers. Even today, the WWE likes to limit and/or control what projects the wrestlers can or cannot do while under contract.

Right, the DVD-commentary is great. But he best Carpenter commentary is with Kurt Russel (Can't remember what movie.) when they mention the movie only a couple of times. The rest is them just talking about memories, family and stuff. You get the feeling they are great pals who don't have enough time to just hang out and used that recording to do that.

    How to win at hopscotch
Sign On the Line: Instead of throwing the stone in numerical order, toss it in any square. When you complete a successful turn, initial the square where your marker landed and pass it to the next player. The game ends when all spaces have been initialed. The person with the most initialed squares wins.

Hop scotch. You draw the pattern of 10 number in boxes. Step one, toss two objects onto 2 boxes. Jump onto the Number one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten. When the boxes are side by side, land with both feet. When there is one box side to side, land with one foot. Skip boxes with a stone in it. Loose by falling or not landing in the boxes. Win the turn by completing all 8 jumps into the box and the last jump out of the last box without falling.

Part of the fun of the aesthetic of this film is, if it had been a big budget picture with flashy special effects, that would have undermined the anti-consumption message. Also Carpenter would likely have had to sacrifice a lot of control if he had to appease big investors.

Rowdy Roddy Piper was once the "main villain" in the WWF (at the time) and Hulk Hogan was the "hero." There was a Saturday morning cartoon called _Hulk Hogan's Rock'n'Wrestling_ which starred both of them, as well as most of the rest of the big WWF wrestlers of that era. It might be worth it to look up an episode or two.
