  • Hey guys, hope you also have your tin foil hats ready to be put on cause we are going deep down the rabbit hole on this one. I love conspiracy theories and have my own "out there" beliefs so this movie was right up my alley. They Live 1988 was a nice surprise. They go deep deep in this movie and bring up some really hard hitting topics under the guise of humor and silliness. John Carpenter does a great job with this one!

The best thing about that great extended fight scene (for me) is how it shows how much effort is necessary to get someone to open their eyes to the truth, I believe that was Carpenter's intention.

I think it's telling that at first Frank is the conspiracy guy and Nada is the compliant one. But by the fight scene Nada is the conspiracy guy and Frank is the doubter. I've noticed this in real life: conspiracy theorists are all about the theory...but once you lay out in forensic detail how the real conspiracy works they start tuning out defensively. Once the conspiracy takes shape beyond their control they fall into denial as much as the "sheeple."

It's history repeating itself. For as long as their have been economic systems where few benefit from the work of many, there have been cycles of boom and bust. During the bust period, people suffer terribly, they built shanty towns, live in squaller, and then the people in charge see them not as fellow humans, but as disposable people that need to be driven or sacrificed to the gods.
The movie resonates because its underlying message is that we humans have to stop seeing each other as the enemy... and start caring more about each other instead of allowing powerful people to manipulate us into hating/hurting one another.

My best friend and I were big pro wrestling fans during the 80's and 90's so we went to see this movie when it first released in theaters. We didn't understand the "hidden meanings" behind the plot of the film, we just thought it was a cool sci-fi action movie. Now watching it as an adult, I understand it and find it almost prophetic. Certainly an 80's classic, thanks for reacting!😁💯

This movie is super over the top and cheesy in a lot of ways, but damn is the message powerful. I mean, do I actually think that we’re ruled over by a bunch of alien lizard people? No… not exactly. But, sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference, can’t it? And the methods of control used by those in power, and the way they live and do things that are completely alien to us as common people, I think that’s the message the film is trying to portray. However, haven’t actually watched this video yet, super excited to see your reaction and commentary afterwards, didn’t expect to see you react to this movie, but super excited when I saw it pop up!

About the beginning: he was a hobo, he traveled around getting any job he could. The social context of the movie: in the 1970s there was the Oil Crisis which melted the US economy and produced a huge recession in the 1980s, specially with the rise of Reagan and neoliberal economics. So there was huge masses of unemplyed people. And all of that was made worse by the end of the decade with the burst of Japan's economic bubble. Or something like that.

This is one of the few films I'd consider perfect in form and function. Its various pieces all communicate its core ideas. Nothing needs improving. Sure, the effects could be better, but as is, they don't take away from the story. And, the wrestling scene perfectly encapsulates how someone will fight to keep from seeing something because once they see it, they might have to do something about it.

Over the years when revisiting this particular cult classic I couldn't help but have my underlying suspicions that this film and many others have served as either means of revelation about our world or for a method of predictive programming for the masses sort of like the film V For Vendetta (2005). Also to answer your question Imon, yes human civilization had been successfully invaded by an alien species with this films universe but there's no telling when precisely the invasion had occurred.

one of my favorite movies and my favorite line "I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum & I'm all out of bubblegum plus They Live is the most frightening movie ever considering what's going on today also the main guy is Rowdy Roddy Piper a famous wrestler of that time🤨💪

Yes, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper was Canadian.
The film is primarily using allegory and metaphor to criticize the Reagan Administration. Reagan was the first president since Wilson to really kowtow to the laissez-faire capitalism that we know today, and started heavily deregulating business laws and ceding political power to increasingly more extreme conservative movements in the country, which is how we wound up with MAGAts and the Religious Right infiltrating government. Depicting the class war as an alien invasion softened the message into something more accessible, but it also commented on American foreign policy in the Third World.
If you think *this* film is topical, you *need* to see THE PARALLAX VIEW, which was one of the first movies to speculate on the world we live in today and it was made in 1974.

    “I watched the trailer.”
I wish reactors would stop watching trailers for older films before reacting to it. I think it makes for a better reaction when they go in blind.

I often wonder if Half Life 2 is inspired by They Live. I recommend that game or at least reading up on the lore.
Slightly different interdimensional invasion philosophy, but still a little close to home on the police state and human collaborators.

While this is a great paranoid movie, we *do* all need things-not just the basic necessities but assurances and choice, and comfort isn't just meaningless since it requires less physical and mental effort to have and enjoy both those necessities and luxuries.
We can also flip the script here. Perhaps the easiest way to actually manipulate and control people is to sell them a shared story in which they are the truly awake ones. This flatters them because it fulfills the ego to believe you have either superior knowledge, perceptions, or insight your enemies deem you to lack or that they underestimated you. Throw in that they're the true victims who are the ones being persecuted. This allows them to take their own past bad experiences (which everyone has had), and unite them against some perceived enemy. (Not saying this was John Carpenter's secret intent behind making They Live, just that a lot of revolutions and would-be revolts in history often have those who positioned themselves as leaders of those revolutionaries who are often benefiting mainly themselves..)
The fight scene was absurdly overly long and drawn out, I assume because Rowdy Roddy Piper is a pro wrestler and the fights in this film have a lotta wrestling style movements.

If you enjoy stuff like this and The Matrix, then I highly recommend the comic book series The Invisibles by Grant Morrison. The Wachowskis borrowed a lot of their ideas for The Matrix from it.

No matter what the people in charge say, never forget we got the tools, technology, and labor power to meet all our needs. The problem ain't really the people, exactly, it's this false consciousness that turns is against each other and makes us all doomers. The best way to fight that is to learn how to look passed and tolerate differences, to focus on broad material needs that everyone has, and to find some way to get involved with your neighbors in solving things. People like us can learn about politics, philosophy, economics, and strategies to achieve our own goals. With discipline, patience, and humility we can all be the leaders we need. A good place to start now is the economist Michael Hudson and his book "...And Forgive athem Their Debts"
