    Your videos are very informative! When we bought the house and inherited a pool, I knew nothing about maintaining it. Now my Polaris is running well, and the pool is blue and beautiful! Thanks!

    Outstanding review. In just 4 minutes, you answered several questions I had. Thank you. We recently replaced our 18 year old model with an updated model (380 I think) and it will quickly clean our pool, just like you stated. Just recently it started tangling itself in knots but with your video, I have a few things to go look at now (swivels, floats, and cord length).

    Glad you benefited from it. I currently service 8 accounts with the Polaris Cleaner so I have become very familiar with these cleaners. I am usually surprised when I get to an account and find one not running. They are that reliable.

    Wow! That was so helpful! Thank you!
    We’ve had Polaris for a while but it stopped working. A pool guy came to fix it but it still didn’t work. He came out again, took the Polaris (not hose) and claimed he ordered parts. Took about a month to get it back. Now it gets tangled up every 3-5 min so we have to get leaves out with a net every day.
    After seeing this video I noticed that back up valve is shooting out water continuously…and the tail is not moving half the time. 🙄 and there’s nothing stopping debris back up and there are 2 swivels but they’re so tight they’re not swiveling at all.
    Looks like the pool guy who charged us an arm and a leg has some explaining to do.

    I came across your wonderful instructional video on the polaris.... seeking help out of desperation. The Pool Guy we hired has over 30 years experience, but knows absolutely nothing except to vacuum a pool! So am educating myself on pool maintenance, so I won't be hoodwinked. I have had some issues with my Polaris and you covered every question I had. Now I have that "creepy crawler" (my personal name for him, he's cute) working exactly as he should be. Thank you, thank you.

    Depending on what Polaris Model you have I suggest you inspect the belt -f it is a 360,380. Also remove a wheel bearing and inspect it. If the belts look worn that could cause your power loss (again, if your Polaris has it). If it is a Polaris 280 also check the wheel to make sure the plastic teeth are not stripped in the wheel that touches the metal drive shaft. Change the bearings if they look worn. If you've ever owned a skateboard you will recognize worn bearings. Let me know what you find.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  12 лет назад +2

    If you already checked the debris screen in the quick disconnect then the last things to check is the small wheels swing axle and spring. That will keep the small wheel from making contact with the two big one. I've had that happen once. spin one of the wheels and see if the small wheel spins too.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  12 лет назад +1

    Check the debris screen in the Quick Disconnect for filter debris.
    If that is OK then the bearings in the Polaris are worn. I recently changed out all the bearings in three Polaris cleaners, one was a 280 model (6) bearings and the other two were 380 versions which have a total of (8). The Polaris 360 and 380 are a bit more work to change the internal bearings. The outer wheel ones are fairly easy. I am going to post soon the video on changing the bearings on the 360 and 380. Just been busy.

    Great Video! My Polaris is right at 20 years old and still runs well. You can purchase kits to "tune up" your cleaner. I replaced the rubber on the wheels and a few other minor items and it works as good as new.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  12 лет назад

    You can try replacing the nut with a new one if he old one looks old or worn. If that doesn't do the trick then maybe your feed hose assembly is damaged in some way. I have a video on my Channel on how to replace it. It is like a $30 part and very easy to switch out. But try changing the nut first, that usually solves the problem. Make sure the hose is completely over the feed pipe leading into the Polaris and is very snug, then tighten the nut.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  12 лет назад

    It is either the wheel bearings, or if you have an old Polaris 180 or 280 the wheels are stripped. The last thing is a rubber band failure an internal part. Check the wheels and bearings first since it is the more common problem.

    Try the Polaris screen inside the quick disconnect. Then remove the backup valve and reconnect the Polaris without it and see if it moves. Maybe the Backup Valve is jammed and needs to be replaced.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  12 лет назад

    Water will shoot out of the quick disconnect as it regulates the pressure to the Polaris. as long as your Polaris is moving fine then it is working OK. You can adjust it by turning the big black dot to increase or decrease the water shooting out. If your Polaris isn't moving however, then it might have failed (They fail every few years). More water than usual will be shooting out of the part or the black dot may be missing. Just install a new one if that is the case & you are good to go.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 лет назад +1

    It's probably the bearings in all three wheels. I just did a 280 last month. After I changed all of the bearings it was zipping around the pool. I usually don't mess with the small wheel. It is really easy to do on the 280. Just use a screw driver and remove the plastic wheel nut. I have a video on this too ;)

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 лет назад +1

    I think you said it was a new Polaris. More than likely something is stuck in the quick disconnect mesh basket. The quick disconnect is where the Polaris attaches to the wall. There is a thimble like basket in there. See if any debris is in there. It surely can't be anything mechanical unless the Polaris is a dud. If it is still not working let me know.

    I hope this gets your attention David. I got a brand new Polaris and I can't get the rpms to 28 min. It's 23 now. I blocked all but one return valve other than the Polaris one. I increased the pump speed to the max.
    Another issue is the backup valve keeps shooting water continuously. Sometimes stronger than other times but always strong. How come when it's brand new?
    The end result is that the Polaris floats around sometimes before landing down and cleaning again. But one fan definitely tell it's inefficient.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  5 лет назад

      If it is not getting enough wheel RPM the backup valve will engage constantly. Is there any way to restrict the other return jet? But keep an eye on the filter pressure to make sure there isn't too much back pressure. Maybe a restrrictor eyeball.

    • @fadisharif
      @fadisharif 5 лет назад

      Thank you for the reply. Currently I only have one active return valve. 2 blocked completely. And one for the Polaris. Do you suggest restricting the last one too with those balls with a small opening? I thought a constantly running backup valve is a damaged one.
      Thanks again.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  5 лет назад

      Yes, restrict that last one down. I have a pool running off of the Polaris 360 and one restricted return line and it is fine. The back up valve is probably fine. When the cleaner has low flow the gearing in the back up valve don't work properly.

    • @fadisharif
      @fadisharif 5 лет назад

      @@SPL thanks David I'll try that tomorrow and report back. Hopefully the local store has these eyeball restrictors. I just thought of a last resort option which is connecting the Polaris to one of the plugged return lines since they're very strong. But I'd have to buy a lot of hose extensions. We will see tomorrow. Thanks again.

    • @fadisharif
      @fadisharif 5 лет назад

      @@SPL So I plugged the last return other than the polaris one, and I let it leak a little bit after having high rpm. Right now I'm at 32-33 rpm. There's definitely an improvement in performance but still floats around sometimes especially after it hits a wall face forward. Btw it only got better after I switched the jet thruster to 6 oclock position.
      For some reason it loves the edges of the pool, keeps running there. some areas in the middle dont get cleaned but the power of the jet mixes the dirt into the water so I might find some of it settled again tomorrow.
      Thank you a lot for your help and I'm open to any other suggestion

  • @SPL
    @SPL  12 лет назад

    Just cut the hose with a razor blade and re-attach it to the swivel if you mean the hose broke by one of the nuts that hold it on. If you are talking about the connection from the cleaner, where the hose attaches to it, that part is replaceable an the newer Polaris. It is a very easy fix, part is "Feed Pipe with Elbow." You just remove the blue top and it is a matter of 4 screws. If you are referring to the part out of the wall "Quick disconnect", simply turn it w/ hand and it pulls out.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 лет назад

    That usually happens for a few reasons: One or more of the swivels is no longer working so the hoses aren't swiveling or the back-up valve has too much flow so when it activates it tangles up the cleaner. You have the new back-up valve pointed at the cleaner (The jet should shoot out towards the cleaner) - if it is on backwards that can cause the problem. If the belt is wearing out in the cleaner that could do that also -when you pull it up as it is running do all three wheels spin?

    I have a 280 and it is running great. Only issue that I run into is very fine dust that collects every so often on the top of the water or at the bottom. The 280 generally gets it from the bottom of the pool if it covers that area. Trying to figure out if there is anything that cleans up the fine dust that is sometimes in the pool? In Texas it gets dusty sometimes.... Your videos are great and very helpful, thanks!

    If it is 5 years old and doesn't work well to begin with in your pool, then I would suggest replacing it with a suction side cleaner like the Zodiac G2 (I review it on my channel). It is around $250 online and even if you add a canister for debris, it would be about the cost of repairing your existing Polaris.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 лет назад +1

    It sounds like their is too much return pressure going to the Polaris. Can you turn the return pressure down at all to the booster pump or is is plumbed directly in with no valves? Try opening up the quick disconnect - the part with the black dot and see if that helps.

  • @pmandragouras

    Good review I didn't know that I could adjust the pressure in the tail, but it is not running properly still and I think it is mechanical inside. I will search for directions on what to do when I open it.

  • @SPL

    when you pull it up is the backup valve shooting water continuously out of it or does it turn off every three minutes or so? Sounds like a backup valve failure. You can also remove the backup valve and see if the Polaris moves normally. Try that first and let me know.

    The Polaris 360 works best if it is connected to a jet near the center of the pool. So whatever jet is most central would be the best choice. It doesn't have to be near the skimmer at all. It is a really great cleaner.

    I've had the 280 for 15 years. I must have spent $200-$300. in parts over the years. The plastic pieces wear out quickly. Currently mine is not working once again. Polaris parts are expensive in Pool Stores but if you go on Amazon you'll find lower prices for the parts. I just replaced the Turbines in mine thinking that was the issue but replacing them did not fix it. The trouble with these units is you never really know what the problem is when it happens. Yes, the easy stuff like Wheels, the disconnect, Swivels. But there are so many moving parts that each repair seems like solving a mystery. ;-)
    Mine is running really slow and the brand new tail keeps getting caught underneath the Polaris. I took off back up valve thinking that would be the issue but it's not. David, It's Dino. Long time. If you can help I would appreciate it. I have replaced Turbines, 2 Wheels and Tail so far.

      I'm doing ok. Hope you & the family are ok.Crazy times. So yea water is coming out of the usual places but it's lethargic. Real slow. If it hits a float from hose, it gets stuck. That's how weak it is. I'm starting to think it's my booster pump as it seems to now always make the usual start up sound. Normally, after 10 seconds it use to sound quieter.

    I sounds like one of the tubes inside has come loose. I am in the process of posting a video on replacing the belts and fixing a leaking tube (Maybe tonight). It is an easy fix, but you will need to take the Polaris apart. The black clips that hold the tubes on tend to wear out over time. The screw that holds the top on might be missing.

    How old is your Polaris? If it is over 5 years old or so then my guess is that the bearings are worn out. If it gets hung up in a corner that means that the wheel RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) are too low. Even with good water pressure if the bearings are bad it will get hung up. Maybe the belt is bad too if it is a Polaris 360 or 380. If it isa Polaris 280 a wheel could also be stripping. I just posted a new video that might help.

  • @SPL

    I change them whenever they start wearing at an angle or start to look very flat. They last a long time. I leave all of the nozzles pointing straight back. Zodiac also admitted that the manual for the Polaris 280 is in error. All the nozzle positions they show are opposite of what they say they do... straight out seems to work best.

    I usually replace the complete "Quick Disconnect" unit when I see it leaking and not just the black release valve. The quick disconnect could be cracked causing the water you see. As far as the unit being clogged, if the debris screen is damaged, small debris could have passed through. I am in the process of posting a video on the"quick disconnect." Remove the quick disconnect from the wall by turning it clockwise, and see if the debris screen is clogged first. Let me know how it goes.

    I bought a house in January that had pool and a Polaris cleaner, not sure of the model. I just figured out how to turn it on. I have a jandy valve right after my Pentair variable speed pump that feeds the Pentair cartridge filter and a line that goes to what I've heard called an energy/jandy filter. If I turn the jandy valve towards the energy filter,I get water flow at the Polaris port. I don't have a secondary pump for the Polaris, it's run by the Pentair pump. My question is where does the debris go that the Polaris picks up? I know the basket collects large debris, but what about the smaller dirt? Since it doesn't have a line to a suction port that takes it back to the main filter, how is it cleaning? Does it just stir it up in the water so the skimmer and main drain can send the water through the cartridge filter?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  Год назад

      THe smaller dirt particles get blown around and eventually make it into the skimmer. You can try a sand/silt bag to pick everything up.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 лет назад

      JillLauren Wemmer More than likely the front wheel is worn or the one side wheel is worn- the teeth are worn out by the metal drive shaft. If the back wheel looks fine you can rotate it to the front. While you have it off check the bearings to make sure they spin nicely. The wheels have plastic teeth on them that wear down over time.

    thanks for all your information on the polaris. my hose gets knotted up all the time and it has swivels already on the hose similar to those in your video. I think that the polaris tail needs to be reduced in pressure because it flies out of the water and sprays regularly. my pool guy says that the end of the tail required a spongy thing and that's when it started getting tangled.??? but he says it is normal to have to go out and untangle it. I never touched it before he messed around with a spongy thing attached to the end. it gets tangled from the polaris end of the hose before the entire hose because entangled and inactive.....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

  • @stever5887

    At about 1:30, you talk about the tail shooting water if it's turned up too much. This can be critical, as the water (which, of course, has chlorine in it) will cause water spotting of nearby glass. It will also start and feed corrosion of any metal on, say, a sunroom structure, metal chairs or chaise lounges you may have nearby. Over time, the spraying etched the glass on my mom's sunroom, partially removed the anodizing of its exterior anodized aluminum. My elderly mom didn't realize what was happening, and the pool guy didn't take the two minutes to adjust this during one of his weekly visits. But isn't that why you have a pool guy? If the tail of your pool cleaner is thrashing, shooting water as it climbs up the walls of the pool during a cleaning cycle, you need to adjust it.

    Good morning. I have a 360 and it works well when the filters are clean, which doesn’t last long since I have lots of trees and debris that gets past the skimmer and pump basket. The previous owner had a booster pump type cleaner prior to home purchase, but I purchased the 360 since the pump was no longer installed. There is a dedicated return line or jet with a hose / booster pump set up. Would it hurt to boost the 360 and rely less on filter cleaning? I would also like to reopen the jets I had to close up to get the correct RPMs.

    Wall connection relief valve is passing water! I replaced it thinking bad relief valve but it is releasing water frm the relief valve. Is it too much back pressure from the unit? How do you clean debris in the unit that may be causing this back pressure at the relief valve (Polaris 360 with bigger supply hose). Thanks for the video, I love this pool vacuum.

    I would suggest just running your Polaris for one hour per day to see how clean your pool remains. Also, just take your regular pool pump down to the minimum. If you tell me your filter size and pool size I can give you an estimated run time. The Polaris will only work with a 3/4 hp pump, otherwise too much return pressure. A 1 hp saves you a little on energy. A 2 hp pump is pretty massive and most pool filters can't handle it unless they are the largest type/class.

      Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to me. i actually came to this conclusion from watching one of your videos. and with some help from the guy at the pool supply shop i was able to wedge in a small flat head screw driver and break that peace out and put a new one in. It seems to working better but it did still come off once. could this be caused by too much water flowing through there? i did not put one of those washer looking things behind it when i installed the new quick release.

    Hello, Love your channel and your videos. They've helped me so much with my polaris 280. I'm having an issue that I wonder if you can shed some light on, please. So my Polaris is about 7 years old and up until this season has been trouble free. This year it was acting funny and I found your RUclips channel when I googled the issues. It was tying itself in knots and just kinda floating around with no purpose. I ended up changing the entire hose, tail, and even the float. It works better than before, but not the same as in past years. It won't go to the shallow end, EVER, and I find it running into walls in a perpendicular way and staying that way as opposed to going up and down the walls on it wheels and hugging the walls and floor. Hope that this makes sense and that you can shed some light on this. Thank you.

      I've seen issues with generic bags getting air in them causing issues. Just to test it run it without the bag for 1 hour. If still the same issue we can troubleshoot some more.

      @@SPLThank you for getting back to me. I actually changed to the fine bag also as you recommended in your video. I didn't have the courage to the wall fitting with the new tube, but I think I'll try that today. I also might play with the jet direction in the back. I think that it's at 11 o'clock. Maybe I should try 1 o'clock? It definitely only makes left turns and stays at the bottom. After watching more vides I see that it's not uncommon for it to not walk the walls, but I swear that it used to. The back wheel seems to come up a lot. Maybe I should change out the wheels? I haven't changed those since I've had the Polaris 280.

    I work on my grandmas old pool that was built in 1977 and it still has the original pool equipment. In the 90s she had her pool replastred and they added a booster pump line because she has a tree that drops large leaves ,twigs and acorns that would give a suction cleaner trouble. She still has the original old style turquoise Polaris 280 and an old PB4 booster pump. I got her a 380 but it keeps getting tangled ,I’ve bought these things that clip on to the hoses and that didn’t work. But is there a way to make it stop tangling and not climb the wall as much? Also is it normal for 380s to move slower then 280s?

    How do you test if booster pump has issues or is losing power? I’ve checked everything else but my Polaris still doesn’t run properly! Also, if backup valve gear mechanism stops working, will entire unit not move properly?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  3 года назад +1

      Typically if the booster pump is struggling you will hear it. A good way to test it is to disconnect the polaris at the wall. Then with the booster pump and main pump on try reconnecting the polaris. If you can reconnect it then the booster pump is not pushing out enough water. YOu should not be able to reconnect the polaris with the booster pump on. You can also remove the back-up valve completely and run the polaris without it to see if somehow it is jammed and resticting flow.

    Polaris 280: The 2 Jets shooting water up into the bag are shooting water crooked and the water from each side is crossing one another. They use to both shoot water straight up. I cleaned out both jets with a paper clip. There is nothing clogged in there. But ever since I noticed the Jets shooting crooked, the Polaris has been running really slow and it gets caught on everything and just stay there until backup valve kicks in.

      Hey Dino - it's been forever! Strange issue. Sounds like a low water pressure issue. I am sure you checked the screen in the Quick Disconnect. If the screen was cracked some debris might have gotten into the tubes on the bottom of the cleaner. Besides cleaning out the jets have you taken the Polaris completely apart and check the lines on the bottom?

    • @Music-Tech-Life
      @Music-Tech-Life 6 лет назад

      Hey Man, how are you? Hope All is well. Yea I have not taken it completely apart which is what I need to do. It's not the water pressure from the pump going into the pool. That seems fine. You think something could be stuck in the 4-5 Inch Water Tube inside. I had replaced that years ago.I'll take it apart and try to figure out what's blocking and causing pressure of water to be low going into Polaris. Thanks for your usual help. I appreciate it.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  6 лет назад

      Usually that only happens when the screen in the line is compromised. I've had little pebbles get into the bottom tubes before. That would stop the water pressure.

    My polaris cleaner doesn't seem to get the deep end of the pool. The bag is often empty for weeks even though there are leaves in the pool. Does that means it's not doing the suction? The tail pressure is also too weak, and I have already adjusted it to the max..

One of the belts was loose. Once I replaced the above parts except the back up valve my Polaris is now moving super slow. Could the belt tension or the back up valve be the cause of this. Thanks for the information. I love my Polaris, whoever invented it is one smart person. The only issues I have with mine is that it will spin in place sometimes when is hits a corner or my steps, it's like the wheels should have the ability to get more traction. I changed the tires thinking that may cure the problem, but it didn't help. Are there any tires available that have more traction?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 лет назад

      Depends on what Polaris model you have. Is your pool tile or fiberglass? If you have a Polaris 180 or 280 you are out of luck as those can't be modified. If you have a 360 or 380 they sell a Positrax tire with suction cups on it. I use those in a Fiberglass pool on my route. How to tell what Polaris Model you have - the 180 and 280 will have a small wheel like in this video/ 360 & 380 no extra wheel. www.google.com/shopping/product/884326240094600751?newwindow=1&safe=active&sclient=psy-ab&q=polaris+pool+leaner++poly+trax+tires&oq=polaris+pool+leaner++poly+trax+tires&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.71778758,d.cGE,pv.xjs.s.en_US.JrJfHfJxu8c.O&ion=1&espv=2&biw=1517&bih=714&tch=1&ech=1&psi=k0nVU-q8GIKoigKD_oDYBA.1406486930692.9&sa=X&ei=rEnVU9zaBIi9jAKk0oBg&ved=0CEgQrRI
      You can buy a set of 3 on ebay - again, only for 360 & 380 models.
      Also, check to see if the bearings inside the tires are in good shape. It should have enough power to spin out of the area pretty quickly so maybe traction is not the issue.

    How is the hose supposed to connect the the cleaner? For mine, we push the hose onto the thinner hard plastic tube in the middle of the cleaner and that push a plastic nut with threads downwards to better the connection. But that never made sense to me, bc surely the threads need something to thread onto. I ask bc the water hose sometimes separates from the cleaner, leaving it stranded.

    • @SPL

      Nothing is holding it on except compression. So you gotta put those nuts on real tight.

    Alot of water is coming out around the quick disconnect. Polaris runs fine. Is this ok or will this affect plaster, plumbing, etc...

    • @SPL
      @SPL  10 лет назад

      Some pools will have too much pressure for the Polaris so water will shoot out of the quick disconnect. It could also be broken - if you notice the Polaris moving slowly that is the case. If the Polaris is moving fine and lots of water is coming out - I turn the fitting facing down so the water doesn't shoot all over the surface. No damage will occur - this is normal. In your case it looks like your booster pump has too much pressure and the quick disconnect is doing its job by relieving the excess pressure.

It worked fine for a few days, but then a lot of water was being sprayed out of the pool through the preassure release valve (the black round thing) next to the wall. I tried to unscrew this valve but it is impossible, it seems glued! So I put the blue restrictor disk and water stopped coming out, but the robot goes very slowly and barely cleans. • @SPL

      +Deb W When it is back-up mode it should be pulled backwards in your pool. The reason it stops moving is the the water pressure switches from the Polaris itself to the back-up valve. You will have to drill it out. Easy to do. Find a drill bit smaller than the threaded sides and just drill the plastic out.

    I feel incredibly stupid BUT can't seem to get the hose to stay ON the polaris even with the nut. The wall fitting is fine but it's the connection right at the polaris. Is there any trick to being able to tighten that nut over the hose so that it doesn't pop off?

      Cindy Sullivan it stays on for 5-10 minutes, the polaris seems to be functioning fine, cleaning, etc., and then the hose pops off. grrr.

      Cindy Sullivan If you have jammed the hose over the polaris swivel and tightened the nut completely it shouldn't pop off. Unless the nut is really old. It works off of compression so try putting it on as firm as possible.

      Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 hm. thanks for the quick reply. the nut IS really old and there's no sort of 'tightening', i.e., no threads. there doesn't seem to be any 'give' when I try to tighten it (I've even whacked it with a hammer to try to force it down). maybe I just don't have the strength to force the nut over the swivel and hose? I saw another thread on the forum that suggested taping it on with marine tape. I figure it's worth a try.

    So if the Backup Valve shoots any amount of Water out of it under normal Operation & Not Backing Up, this means it needs to be replaced?
