I once got isolated in an island here in the Philippines. Glad I have that book to review. I started by 3pm to make my own shelter. Just near my shelter is a coconut tree, lots of it. It was a good source for thirst and hunger. And after that those coconut skins I use it to start a fire for my camp. I stayed there for 3 weeks. And now I want to learn more about this traps.

There’s a way to make the figure four trap more sensitive. The notch on the bait stick that attaches to the upright stick could be carved on the top side of the stick, instead of on the side. Then, on the upright stick, you remove material near the bottom (on the side where the bait stick is) so where the bait stick attaches, there’s wood for it to latch on to (that wood being right above where you removed material).

Trapping with mise en traps following regula tions and having your trapping licence is still a great est to learn trapping. 80% of trapping is about location of traps and knowing the animals behaviours. The device or trap used is still very important so testing in controlled environments is beneficial :)

That was so cool. I've had the same exact Tom Brown book for as long as I can remember. Just looked at it a couple days ago. I'm 63 so its been a day or two. Smiles
i have my electronics/computer/engineering lab in my basement, and we've been beset upon by city rats. I've been having a grand time making novel trap designs, my current favorite is just a nice piece of spring steel from a certain kind of wiper blade (I worked at an auto parts place) and I have that on a light toggle so that it springs straight and at the same time uses that force to tighten a noose. I've set up 3 of them and so far 2 have hit within about an hour. Why do I feel like Wile E. Coyote when I'm doing this sort of thing?
Nice video. Improvements? 1. The fishhooks looked way too big for small and medium sized fish. Try them out. 2. If the weight has to be heavy ... to decrease tension on the trigger stick can you hook up a second weight that is triggered by the first one? It needs to be close to the first weight so the critter gets a BA BOOM ... with the combined weight on him at the end.
Other vids i couldn't see whats going on because of weak light conditions but in your tutorial there were proper light setup to see clearly. Appriciate friend.👍👍
I have a wealth of experience using spring pole type snares and would not recommend that T bar snare trigger, most any other trigger is better. The other traps look good.

We had a big problem with groundhogs on our property, they kept eating our little veggie garden, got to the point where my father offered me 50$ a head if i could kill them, wish i knew how to make these types of traps back then
I am a trapper and I sure thankful that we have better methods! Give me a roll of wire and I can snare anything a lot easier. But they didn't have wire. Making a cross shaped landing stick for the bird trap would help position your snare flat. That would increase the success rate. Long trees, positioned on the crushing stick for your deadfall, would speed up the trap and would increase its crushing power. Very interesting video. It kind of shows why agricultural societies had more time to invent stuff. The hunter/gathers were too busy trying to get food. Thanks for another good one. If you shave the sides of you vertical stick on the triggers, and pound that stick into the ground, it will not twist if the animal pushes from the side. The problem with the last trap is that the animal is pulling out when you want it going forward. Snares work because the animal snares itself as it moves forward. A trail set snare or a cubby with bait at the back would probably be more effective. Thanks for the video.
That is so true, the T-bar is limiting as the trigger must be triggered by the bait being moved. As you said, a simple snare set in a trail will likely be more effective as it is a ''pass'' trap and you can target different species and you don't need any bait. That being said one could install the T bar snare to trigger the other way for a pushing trigger. Thanks so much for the comments and feedback ! Merry Christmas to you as well !! If you used a much thinner trigger/bait stick that would actually bend a little under the tension from the toggle; it would be quite a bit more sensitive to the animals weight/aggravation.
U could also move the vertical stick away from the bait and middle of the trigger stick. So the farther away it is the more sensitive it will be to movement no matter how much weight you have /| /| /__|__________ VS /__|______ / | / | Farther Shorter

Good vid. I think if you just did the one wrap around the trigger for the spring pull fish trap it would have reduced the amount of friction and ended up with a bigger jerking effect. Great vid though

Awesome, I mostly practice getting mechanics down because it is unlawful in my area to use such traps for inhumane reasons. I am convinced that a well made trap with right dimensions would be humane though. I will make more trap videos soon ! :)

What wood are the long bending poles and the ones the have the 7 cut?
I used mostly willow for my traps in this video.

figure 4 deadfall can be sensitive... the joints/ conections/ notches must be done correctly. certain depth on notch, certain length on ends, etc...

It would be good to keep simple straight pins in your pack to pin a live worm or other insect to the bait area.
