  • Decided to trailer the Skinny Boat to the St. Martins River and run down to the Gulf to look for some Bay Scallops. Dropped the boat in @ a ramp in Ozello and made the 5 mile run down to the Gulf which brought me to the St. Martins Keys in between the Homosassa River and Crystal River on what's referred to as the Bombing Range on the Central Florida Gulf Coast. The Range was used for Bombing Practice during World War 2. Anchored in 5 ft. of water and found a Limit of the Tasty Critters!! ....Enjoy

      The Old BASSer...Thanks!! I grew up Fishing in both Fresh & Salt living in Virginia & N.C. Had a chance to move to Florida and live on the Gulf Coast...one of the best decisions I've made. Along the way all these other Hobbies just fell into place!! Did a lot of Hunting @ one time but have pretty much exited that aspect of my life. Appreciate U diving into the Adventure & leaving a great comment.....Sea Ya!!

    That looked like an Easter egg hunt. And some of those scallops had some colorful spots like Easter eggs. We were surprised to see that. We love the idea of trying scalloping some time. Seems it would lead to some delicious meals 😊 Enjoy!

      WILKINS' OUTDOOR ADVENTURES....Thanks!! The Scallops in the film are Calico or Bay Scallops!! The type you get @ restaurants are Deep Sea Variety!! There is very little commercial catch because of Restrictions Imposed by the State of Florida. They are only found in a few areas on the Gulf Coast & the season is 2 1/2 months long. The life span is one year. The area where I live is Scallop Central. As you can sea I only mess with the Critters in shallow water...this filming was in 5 ft.!! Diving in 8 to 10 feet of water is a waste of effort. Most Kids have a blast in the Skinny water because this Reely is a Family Adventure!! Come on down & give it a try.....Jaws doesn't mind!!

      They are in Crystal River which is just up the road on US 19 about 5 miles. Ozello proper is knot much of a Tourist attraction with the Xception of Pecks Seafood restaurant out near the Gulf. Ozello is in between Homosassa Springs & Crystal River. I use a dirt ramp to get away from all the congestion & the St. Martins River is a Gem to Navigate & is very easy with the Skinny Boat!! When I anchor on the Gulf I'm in between Homosassa & Crystal River. There are a lot of Guides that do Scalloping trips during the season in both Homosassa Springs & Crystal River...The season is closed in 10 days & reopens next year on July 1st. Sea ya...

      The Fishing Hobby....Thanks!! What makes Scalloping Reel easy for Kids is the ability to Dive in Skinny water!! I hit the Scallop area @ the time of high tide which was a +3 ft. I'm 6 ft. which is how filming was easier because I'm standing up in 5 ft. of water. @ low tide the water would be 2 to 2 1/2 feet deep .....Kids with a 2 ft. wingspan would barely need to go underwater. Also as you can see there was a lot of Pinfish flashing in the Sunlight...it's an underwater delight!!

    I thought scallops were stuck to rocks or piers. We can't eat seventy five percent of clams or mussels
    in south Texas waters because of toxins or mercury. Oysters though are found in designated areas.

    • @WesLovelace
      @WesLovelace  5 лет назад

      Wayn Jul....Thanks!! These Scallops are only found in Shallow Bays on the Gulf Coast of Florida. As you can sea the water clarity is Xcellent as is the Quality!! The life span is only one year!! The season is fairly short..this year it was from July 1 to September 24. Florida also harvests a lot of Clams & Oysters but pollution is knot a huge concern....

    Excuse my ignorance but what's the difference in Scallops and Clams? Full View Like 72

    • @WesLovelace
      @WesLovelace  5 лет назад +1

      Well lets sea.....Both shell fish are bivalves & are attached to the shell halves...both are filter feeders.....The big difference is Clams have a foot which they can attach to the bottom & bury themselves. Scallops as you saw in the video lay on the bottom or use water pressure to sit on top of the grass...They also have those Cobalt Blue Eyes attached on the 2 shell halves & the meat is very tender as compared to a Clam....Hey thanks 4 the Question Allen....Have a great week!!
