  • On this trip to the Refuge I visited the site of the old Wall Creek Hunting Camp that sits right on the edge of the coastal timber here on the Florida Nature Coast.....Getting there by boat is the only access to this part of the Chassahowitzka NWR!! My drone Flight Air Bayport 40 in my Drone Playlist shows this area in a flyover if you're interested in this specific area!!

Growing up in Virginia and making the transition to Florida allowed me to experience a completely different outdoors lifestyle and when I moved here to Hernando County I found my paradise on the Florida Nature Coast here in Bayport......Have a great weekend!!😎

      Ken Thanks!! There is absolutely nothing out here for miles!! It's 3 miles West to the Gulf and 8 miles thru the swamp to US 19 which is the main artery here in Hernando County ....Plus going either North or South from where I'm at is about 8 miles in either direction....This Federal Refuge will be here long after I'm gone!! If you're interested I run trail cams in the Refuge and my drone catalog has a flight about 7 years ago.....Air Bayport 40 Flight over Wall Creek Camp.....Enjoy your weekend!!

    Thanks John!!.....It's a way of life when any structure is built low to the ground....I've seen several hunting camp buildings destroyed because of Hurricanes and Tropical Storms within 15 miles of my house!! I've suffered 2 water events in 30 years.....In 1993 the No-Name storm/Storm of the Century put 2 feet of water in my house.....It took me over a year getting it back in shape and the No Name was a winter storm not a hurricane and then last September Hurricane Idalia got the carpet wet and it took me a month to get back in after drying the T&G floors and replacing the carpet.....Living here on the Gulf Coast is great until it's not because of high water!!😎

      Thanks Greg!! Well I have a lot of knowledge from my college days about the Sawmill town of Centralia.....For instance they harvested huge Longleaf Pine. Cypress and Cedar out almost a 1/4 mile from my location....I still see remnants of the exposed stumps and root systems and there are still islands that have large Longleaf Pines still standing.....The Gulf has made numerous changes to the Refuge and at the turn of the 20th Century what's sawgrass and islands now was solid land back then....This is a fascinating area to me and I've enjoyed every minute of analyzing everything I see.....Sea Ya!!

      Thanks Wayn!! Anytime you can get this far inside the tree/timberline you're in an outflow from a Spring inside the Wildlife Refuge.....The coastal storms have really made most of these places hard to get to because of all the downed trees and there are too many gators back to go sloggin' around the coast.....LOL!! That's awesome Wes. I really appreciate you covering that both visually and historically. I've wanted to venture there but after the mangroves transition to marsh grass, I can only make it about halfway to the coastal zone in my Maverick. It's already head-on-a-swivel territory when fishing it.
    As a fisherman who hyper focuses on stealth, I generally loathe airboats, but I'd love to rent one for the weekend just to explore that "last mile" up to land.

    Thanks for the tour Wes. I have been pretty close to the end in my jet but didn’t proceed up to look for the spring. I had no idea about the camp being there or the history! I’ll have to go all the way up there this summer! I didn’t understand the comment about not being able to take airboats up there anymore. Are they banned in that part of the Refuge?

    • @WesLovelace
      @WesLovelace  Месяц назад

      Thanks Mark!! Air Boats are legal!! Years ago you could enter the Refuge from the coastline from any vessel and hunt or fish and not have law enforcement ding you which by the way was almost non-existent back then......Today you are suppose to enter the Refuge from a marked entry such as the Centralia check point on US 19.....This put's better control of Ingress and Egress at the hands of the State of Florida and FWC and to help control illegal activity.

      I know you're down near Ft. Pierce but the area in the IRL is a pretty nice place to hang out.....I use to keep my big boat in T-Ville and fish offshore of the Cape!! Short of going to the Glades this area is about 160 sq. miles that has a Wilderness Designation and about 40 sq. miles of fishable water that I'm familiar with and have access without towing the boat to another location....I've been enjoying the knowledge that's accumulated over many years of Xploration!!

  • @fishing4dinner
    @fishing4dinner Месяц назад +2

    Very interesting! Can you get there by land or did all that material have to be brought in by boat?
    Did I catch that correctly: airboats are not allowed in the refuge?

    • @WesLovelace
      @WesLovelace  Месяц назад

      Thanks Marc!! Back in the day you got to the camp mostly by airboat and from the camp walking going east to hunt.....Nothing has changed as far as airboats are concerned but you can't come from the Gulf side to hunt in the Refuge.....There is one main entrance off US 19 in Hernando County and the entrance is monitored and you also pay a $5 fee and register your vehicle.....FWC is the law enforcement in the Federal Refuge..... and they heavily patrol this area from land and from the Gulf!! All the material came from Bayport by boat!! Phone/GPS just don't work in the Refuge.....If you could do a flyover you could get a bearing but a compass is a poor way to navigate this place.....There have been people get lost in there....Some in last few months!!

      Marc I really didn't think this trip thru with the 3rd person which I've never attempted. At 15'-3" the boat is made for 2 people and I'm going to be overweight and I need to be able to freely navigate utilizing 1/2 of the rear deck. From a safety standpoint, weight distribution and the severity of the area I'm just not comfortable trying to attempt this trip under these conditions.....Sorry I should have given my answer more consideration before jumping to a snap decision.
