Phil, I really like your notations that there is no "post production" processing! Most You-Tubers use $3,000+ guitars to demo equipment and a ton of post production.I really dig your positivity and real demos! Thanks for all you do! 👍🏼
I use my Tele with this amp and it sounds great. I also have an LTD with EMGs and it sounds great. Whether playing single coilor humbucking in clean or dirty settings. I have a consistently clear sound and I absolutely love the tone.
I got my son the Tubemeister 18 in a trade and he uses it for worship at church and his pedal's sound really good through it, outside of the worship music he and I play skatepunk music and the distortion channel's sound really nice without pedals as well, he's got a G&L ASAT,Legacy, and then an LP copy with gold foil single coils and they all work well with his amp. When he plays at church he runs it direct but at home he plays through a Vinatge 30's loaded 4x12.
Tyler, coming from YOU who is a supremely talented musician, that's like the pot calling the pedal black. Cause of you I delayed buying a PRS, because I thought no way they can sound THAT good. That has to be all you. Turns out it mostly was, but I did get a PRS SE and it was DEFINITELY worth it.
I agree. I've owned two SEs both purchased pre-loved and currently have a SE Custom 24 - and they are so worth the money! In my opinion they are the best of the best guitars not made in the USA that I've laid hands on. Schecter would be my #2.
Carlos and Brian, I have tried to really like the PRS, played a few SE's and custom models too. The neck feel is what gets me every time. To each their own. What is the main feature that makes you love your PRS? Just Curious?
Seems to me that they use the outer case as a heat sink where as most amps have the heat contained within the chassis. So your perceived heat is hight but the heat around the components is potentially less. Possibly a lot safer as well.
You beat me to it dude! That's exactly why the H&K feels so hot. I'm tipping any other tube based amp that had the tubes directly under a metal cover would get pretty hot. I'e had my GrandMeister 36 for just over 3 years now and it has always run hot like this but has never given me any trouble.
These H&K Tubemeisters are by far the best entry level tube amps I've played in the last 20 years. They sound very good, and at their price point, that is something that surprised me. I grabbed a H&K TM18 for a light bar gig rig and it gives me everything I need. They could be improved, however, I cannot complain with the incredible deal they provide.
At the end of the video, I knew the unit was using a solid state rectifier. Years ago, I did a home brew amp that used 12AX7s and EL84s but with a 5U4 rectifier. It was in a closed wooden cabinet and had no indicator light to tell if it was on or off (hey, I built the thing when I was 14 from an RCA schematic). I inadvertently left it on for two days and "BAM!" - the 5U4 exploded! Scared the crap out of me at the time. This amp looks beautiful - great sound and eye candy to boot. It's a winner!
I got the pre-facelift, the Grandmeister36 with the pedal and I love it. Bigger feet may be helpful to put it on a few cabinets. Take out the screws, and put bigger ones on there if you need. The head is light enough to carry with one hand. The travel bag is also designed to slide in the head from the top. And that is the main thing you should carry it in. It's handle is on top. My only issues: I'd like for it to save the wattage I chose for the particular patch with all the other settings. Or at least it could stay at one setting until you switch to another. It goes back to full wattage when you switch. Only thing I'd add is a nice output jack for HQ headphones. Especially with the red box late at night. I wouldn't need any additional gear. It can get warm, but you'll never get burned. They did a great job designing that box. If I imagine heads with 3 times the space and they start to smell funny or at some you may slightly melted plastic components...that thing is amazing. The housing is also designed to get rid of the heat quickly, so you don't have to wait after a gig to put it back in the case. Warm outside, cooler inside...where the components live^^. I know this thing is loaded, but you should've mentioned the option to adjust almost everything wireless via tablet or phone. The Deluxe 40 has also several modes to change the characteristics of the Redbox. The Midi Support is superb.
You can reduce the wattage with buttons on the back. 36, 18, 5, 0 watts (0W for silent recording). When I'm at home playing with 5W at low volume and I switch to another preset, I'm back at the full 36Watts. I can reduce the volume between presets with the volume and later change the overall volume with the Master but i still bugs me. I'd rather choose to play everything on reduced number of tubes and go through my presets and later change it again to full wattage or silent recording.
That is one of the difference between the 36 and the 40. On both amps you can save the power soak settings on a patch by patch basis, but on the 40 there is also a switchable global override that allows you to set the power soak setting regardless of the power soak setting.
Aww-.- I want that. Maybe after Christmas I give them a call and there is the possibility for an upgrade. Or I just go through all the patches and save them with the power soak setting I prefer.
Is it me or do the controls on his guitar not work in the traditional way? :P Great review! I've been thinking about grabbing one of these for a while now. :)
I seriously almost bought one of these, but ended up buying a 5150 III combo instead. I don't regret it at all, but I still would like one of these for its versatility, programmability, and the built in effects and cab emulation.
Benjamin Vreeman I don't ever sell gear. I only add to the collection. If I bought one it would be complimentary to the EVH. I guess it's time to work some more overtime, because I've had a serious case of GAS lately.
I absolutely love this amp. It goes everywhere with me. The only thing I haven't been able to perfectly dial in is that vintage Fender sound, but I'm a tone snob and I've gotten really really close. Lol. therefore I love it. Great review Phil!
Have this amp. Love it, and would Never sell it, But I also have a H&K Tube 50 combo that I bought new, in 2000, that I like the tone of more....particularly, the clean channel. The Tube 50 combo was designed in Germany, and assembled in Germany. The Grandmeister deluxe 40, was designed in Germany, and Assembled in Japan, where shortcuts might have been taken, to keep the cost down. Makes a big difference.
Correction there: "The Grandmeister Deluxe 40, was designed in Germany, and Assembled in... _CHINA_ ". Not Japan. Just sayin'. :-) Whatever, love this amp, at least going by all the great demos out there (including this one with Phil's great tips!), and it's now def on my radar!

Then I re-watched this video and found out about the built in noise gate button on the front. Doh! lol. No wonder the knob on the back wasn't doing anything. I need a head slap, but I'm a happy camper now.
Great review. I’ve had the Tubemeister 18 for a long time and still love it. Great for my needs. My only complaint is that it doesn’t have on board reverb, but I fixed that by getting Springtheory reverb from Subdecay.
I always wanted a mesa mark v, I got one a few months back and wish I would've gotten this instead. The tone sounds nice and squishy, whereas my mesa sounds stiff and has a horrible feel, touch response
Have have the regular Tubemeister 40. I love it. Don’t have a problem with the brightness that some people don’t like, I find it sits in a mix really well.
Thanks for the review on this amp Phil. I just bought one on Reverb w/ the pedal for $1000 because of yours and some other dudes review. I may even put taller feet on it and put a handle on top myself! Cheers mate
The metal top of the amp functions as the heat sink according to Hughes & Kettner. Unlike wood cases , it is not hot on top of the cabinet but hot inside. In this case the metal chassis absorbs the heat and actually not as hot inside the chassis.
Sort of reminds me of the little counter top oven we have. The top of the oven gets very hot to the touch, but you have to hand it to the marketing department. They call the hot top a warming tray in the manual. lol.
I've got the GM36 for a few years now. It's a great amp for the price. Most versatile I've seen. Small with enough power to drive whatever cab you want. I think if you can find a dark cabinet it sounds very good. Hi fi and fat. As Phil stated watch your gain level to tame the fuzziness. I'm also careful with the treble and presence. The amp really cuts and sits well in a live mix. I did have some problems with the amp running hot and cutting out. The amp would get very hot (especially in a hot environment). It would go silent with no warning and I would have to power off and then turn back. I solved this with a fan aimed at the back or top. I wish I didn't have to do that but it's still worth it to get all of the other conveniences.
Hey, I know this comment is more than one year old, but maybe you'll respond. Did the heat issue appear while using the power soak or in full 40W? Since the power soak converts power into heat via load within the head if it's below 20W.
@@norak- I can't exactly remember but I would guess your correct. I mostly have to run it with the power soak. The loudest I run it (even with the metal band through a 4x12 is in 18W mode. It cut out 3-4 times. I live in New México so temps don't go above 100. I used indoors. I haven't had it cut out on me since using the cooling fans. These sit on top of the amp and push cool air in. I tried the fans both pulling hot air out and pushing cool air in and found push in cold air lowered the temp most (used a temp sensor gun). I have the 1/5/18 watt 1x12 H&K combo as my main amp. Love how light it is and the DI sounds fantastic. Been using mainly in my apartment so haven't had the chance too mess around at louder volumes.
I bought this amp as an upgrade from my Yamaha THR10, my first and only amp. Its like the THR10 but on steroids. What I would like to see on the amp is a setting for piezo acoustic guitars and tweeters in the H&K 2x12 cabinet to give the cabinet full range.
This amp is fantastic. Definitely get the foot pedal for ease when switching channels. I also bought the 2x12 cab. I love the sounds on all channels. Solid amp
That's a hot looking little amp, I think if you get there cabinet the handles are on the side so the amp will sit flat on top so no foot problems. Pretty cool set up now I gotta get one.
Thank you for your in-depth video. Question please : the GM40 delivers quite agressive tones, how do I get more vintage-Marshall-type sounds, a bit softer, but still with lots of gain ? Bit like the JVM OD1-type ? Like on your video. I can't get them at home. Thank you so much
Read the manual. That one is really well made. Put some bookmarks in the pdf-file for later if you want to do more with the midi options. Also keep playing around for quite a while. You will find sounds you like quickly, but there is more. If someone tries to break into your house, leave the bat and try the foot switch instead.^^
it's running hot on the top because it's like a heatsink, it's supposed to get hot to get heat out. hughes and ketner explained this to me, not to be worried about.
I just bought this amp this week I really like it so far, I read that if you install after market tubes that it makes a huge difference in the tone, you rock Phillip love your channel brother, I need one of your T-shirts to validate my coolness in the universe
Surely a thermometer would have been useful in the 24 hr temp test? Is it not the case that 'hot' or 'warm' is a subjective thing? Also, even though the amp was 'on' and guitar plugged in, doesn't the amp get hotter if some input signal is actually passing through the valves and transformers ? (Please correct me if I'm wrong !).
But if you use the foot controller, it will swotch channels from clean to ultra? But the knobs on the amp will still be in the one position it was left in? How does that work?
Good Review! 😀 but.. your 24h experiment fooled everyone! This Amp has a Power Soak Function as you mentioned in the beginning. You said the amp was running on 5 Watts. Pushing one of the four buttons will activate the output power reducing function. When you press the 20 W button, TSC™ (Tube Safety Control of this amp) disables two tubes to reduce the output power by half, to 20 watts. When you press the 5 W and 1 W buttons, some of the power is converted into heat to further reduce the output to 5 watts and 1 watt respectively. In Speaker Off mode, all the power is converted into heat and the amp is muted. That's because it became so hot ;)
I've had a few HKs and keep sending them back. Just can't get them to tighten up and CRuNCH and prefer pedal boards to on-board effects. The dirt always sounds like fuzz to me. Nice playing though, thank you.
I would love to see a review of or a rating of a bunch of mini tube amps. I know H&K has one in this series and a ton of other brands do too. I think they seem great for a home or studio amp. And maybe a smaller gig. I would love to hear what you think.
Thanks Phil. Great review. However, this amp has also actually a great feature to save 128 presets through foot controller or iPad. Been gigging with the previous GM36 and it is also very usable for gigging with those in amp effects. So very good overall / all round amp. But sure you need to tweak to find your tone, but can easily do GnR, Claptons, Jimi’s, ZZ Tops, AC/DC’s what not..
If you had a choice between this one (H&K TM 40), or a Marshall DSL 40, or a Blackstar HT Club 40, to play rock to light heavy metal tones, then which would you want and why?
Very versatile amp ,I do find the boost a little to fizzy & i prefer an overdrive pedal ,but this amp can do it all . amazing 40 watt tube amp that is about the size of a loaf of bread .
These are great little tube amps, and you sounded really good today. For all of those videos that demo pedal effects, they're always mixed very low. This time I can hear all of the effects. 'The little amp that could.' Hope you enjoyed your holiday.
Great review...im really thinking to get one of these as it has all features i look for. Not a big fan of the blue lights, but i could not find any similar amp with these features other than going to modelling.... does theis amp has any similiar competitor?
How well does it sound with multiple distortions and other effects in front of it? I don’t care to use the built in effects and I have plenty of my own.
just kind of an anecdotal PSA. I don't trust any electronics company enough to run something like that while I sleep. I never charge my mobile device at night. I know it's not chinesium, per se, but thanks Phil for sacrificing for us to show the potential issue.
I have a combo, it's a 100 watts amp, and my question is, in order to play with the same potency, is it posible to play with that H&K head and get 100 watts potency?
Just one question, what did you do to your amp to take away that harsh tone, I have the same amp but it just sounds harsh, almost like there’s way too much treble and that’s the only thing that is murdering my AC/DC tone, I’m now thinking it’s my cab now because I haven’t found one RUclips video with what I’m complaining about however I have read tons of shit related to my complaint, so if you didn’t change the tubes then my only guess now is my cab sucks.
Out of curiosity, what are you doing with your guitar's controls internally? Is it a 4p super switch that just has five settings, or are some features operated by push/pull pots?
Great amps, however, I have found all of them on OD channels, all seem to sound a bit too compressed. My TM18 is a bit compressed on crunch ch! Nice amp tho Phil!
Been watching for a long time... and never noticed the Marshall Shredmaster on the wall. Great pedal , I have one ( and have had it for 20 odd years ) , and will never sell it. The amp sound s good too, bit out of my price range though :)

Thank you for your in-depth video. Question please : the GM40 delivers quite agressive tones, how do I get more vintage-Marshall-type sounds, a bit softer, but still with lots of gain ? Bit like the JVM OD1-type ? Like on your video. I can't get them at home. Thank you so much
I just ordered mine yesterday w/ the foot switch. Can't wait to hear it in person.
Read the manual. That one is really well made. Put some bookmarks in the pdf-file for later if you want to do more with the midi options. Also keep playing around for quite a while. You will find sounds you like quickly, but there is more. If someone tries to break into your house, leave the bat and try the foot switch instead.^^
lmao. The foot switch is that sturdy eh? I have already started reading the manual and agree, it's well laid out. Thank you for the heads up!
You'll see.
that one riff with the clean channel reminded me of bitter sweet from big head tod.
It's beena while since i watch a video in this channel, maybe a couple months, and i think your playing improved alot!
it's running hot on the top because it's like a heatsink, it's supposed to get hot to get heat out. hughes and ketner explained this to me, not to be worried about.
I just bought this amp this week I really like it so far, I read that if you install after market tubes that it makes a huge difference in the tone, you rock Phillip love your channel brother, I need one of your T-shirts to validate my coolness in the universe
Awesome amp, I notice that a lot of other guitar RUclipsrs have been using this head, and it seems very high quality
My music room is chilly in the winter.
Not selling my SigX for one of these anytime soon.
One quick question: what is the model of Strat being used in this review? I skipped around this review, but that doesn't seem to be mentioned. Thanks!
Thats a cool guitar! Is there a video where he talks about it! Its not in his collection videos.
I've had a few HKs and keep sending them back. Just can't get them to tighten up and CRuNCH and prefer pedal boards to on-board effects. The dirt always sounds like fuzz to me. Nice playing though, thank you.
After all, tubes are cooking... so pretty normal to be hot. The question is: would it be enough to really cook any food?!
Great video. Ultra curious about the red guitars now.
Love that riff you played with the delay
I would love to see a review of or a rating of a bunch of mini tube amps. I know H&K has one in this series and a ton of other brands do too. I think they seem great for a home or studio amp. And maybe a smaller gig. I would love to hear what you think.
Keep up the great reviews ! Thank you 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Awesome review video Phillip as usual. Very insightful in regards to the nuances to this amp head.
Nice little amp...good sounds.....great features.
Man, this is what i call love at first sight
The only question I really have is whether the controls on your guitar work in a traditional way?
Is there any way to mode tha amp to raise the feet? Thanks
Love the red guitar background collection!
These are great little tube amps, and you sounded really good today. For all of those videos that demo pedal effects, they're always mixed very low. This time I can hear all of the effects. 'The little amp that could.' Hope you enjoyed your holiday.
It's been 2 years since this video. Do you still have this amp, and are you still loving it?
Question: does one control the compression of the clean channel by choosing the wattage? I know one can, but is that H&K's intent?
Thank you for uploading this Ive been curious about it for a long time but didn't have an preference on it :)
What is that red guitar on the wall with the ridiculous cutaway?
I'm in the mood for this channel
Great review...im really thinking to get one of these as it has all features i look for. Not a big fan of the blue lights, but i could not find any similar amp with these features other than going to modelling.... does theis amp has any similiar competitor?
Great review and demo showing how good the amp sounds and many features.
I’m seriously thinking about going with this amp. Thanks for the review 👍
That thing is sweet! I don't need it, but I want it just the same - sort of like a Ferrari!
Brian Stewart you made me laugh. I thought the same thing. 😜👍
Can you demo some distortion/gain pedals in front of the amp?
Even better the second time.
Head won"t sit on speaker cab because of handle? Maybe put speaker on its side. Anyway I always enjoy your videos, and this amp is quite impressive.
Dose it have to use plug in to an amplifiers
Does anybody know if there is currently an app for Android for this amp, or is it just iPad?
Nice range of sounds and a very pretty looking amp, looks expensive. I do like the clean (but not really clean) sounds a lot, crunch is great too.
Thanks Phil, I've been wanting a H&K.
Is that a Dana scoop on the wall?
Sounds like a great all purpose Amp & Burrito Warmer.
So, you don't need to add effects pedals with this amp ?
All the effects are included ^^
That is correct
Love your vids Phil. I'm looking for one amp/pedal to give me the slight OD's of Carlton, Bonamassa (Sloe Gin),early DiMeola, Santana(Europa)......
Was wondering if you were ever going to do a review of the Shredmaster Phil?
