Flying with the new iPad mini 5 in the Cockpit
The iPad mini 5 is the best iPad I have ever flown with.
The last time Apple updated the iPad mini was in 2015. We finally got an update with the 5th generation iPad mini, which gives us a better screen, better battery life, and a processor that's 3X as fast.
The Mooney is a fast, go-places airplane... but its cockpit is famously narrow. So what better way to test the perfect pilot's iPad than to jam it on the yoke and go fly?
In this video, I serve as safety pilot on an IFR flight from Chicago Executive (KPWK) to Monroe, WI in the MJ20. Howard gets some stick time under the hood as he flies the RNAV 30 approach into KEFT. I even try to copy clearances with the Apple Pencil.
Pencil. Is the way to a truly paperless cockpit?

Outstanding landing great communication between everyone. The aircraft commander had lots of stuff going on and that iPad is way too awesome for navaid.
Fuel 3.69! those were the days. Great job, nice video.
Isn’t it great? ForeFlight runs like lightning now! Nice video.
I thought this was interesting posted on a Mac forum today to show just how big of a difference there is between the new Mini and Mini 4.
“I did an unscientific comparison of photo import speed using an 8 G class 10 SD card with 1.35 G of black and white low res photos, 2,655 photos in all. Running iOS 12 on all three devices, used the clock timer app and Photos in split screen. Tapped Start when I tapped Import All, tapped Stop when the import counter hit 0. I used Apple brand SD card readers, same reader for both Minis.”
All times in min:sec.
Mini 4 17:51
Mini 5 3:37
iPP 11 3:04
Thank you! It’s been a long time coming. So happy Apple is continuing to support this form factor.
I do feel c172 and up.. you are good with the 10inch or 11inch ipad on your lap as well. Great video
I've been using my mini 4 since getting my IFR, fits nice on my Mooney's yoke. have used fore flight, but stuck with Garmin Pilot, testing FlyQ EFB 3.2.1 right now..love the ipad since moving away from a Galaxy.
I use a Ram mount attached to the side windscreen just out of gauge view. This allows me to use the ipad with 1 hand on the yoke etc.
I will get one flying looks so fun with you!!!
Thanks for that. I'm glad you found the video helpful.
Been waiting for a mini with pencil support ever since the ipad pencil came out! Apple... We want an iPad Mini PRO!!!
I would buy that. I love my 11 inch iPad Pro, but it's too big for the GA cockpit.
Rod Rakic I use mine no problem. I just don’t mount it. I have a knee strap for it.
Yoke mount? Blah. Side mount suction if u have room. Luv the mini tho
What cameras do you use? The gear view is really crisp
Thank you.
I’m using a GoPro Hero 7 for the in-cockpit view here.
A variety of other camera for the other views.
Great video, been waiting for the new mini for a long time. As an airline guy great CRM.
Thanks Steve!
That feedback means the world to me.
also on that Garmin, i would have loaded the approach using which ever IAF was appropriate, then direct to Xotiy when applicable...
BandKMUSIC69 on ForeFlight, loading the approach going direct to XOTIY (Which is an IF) wasn’t available.
Only the IAFs at DAVIS or GENZU are available. So I think I settled for loading vectors to final.
Does the Garmin app let you load it with the IF?
@@RodRakic I get that alot where the ATC sends me to a fix thats not the IAF or the IF.. So I take vectors as well.
Thanks for sharing the video. Can please you suggest if I should get one with LTE (for GPS) or pair an external GPS portable module.
I like using a seperate Gps u it. Cause you can get traffic and weather also. I use sentry mini
I recently bought a cellular iPad Mini 5. Its good equipment. Make sure you get the cellular version so you have GPS/A-GPS...
You have to pay for extra feel service monthly?
@@Hedgeflexlfz You don't have to have the cellular connected to use the GPS. And, I'm not sure if AGPS works without the cellular connection. At least you have GPS...
@@pokemonguy6579 I think I'll get the iPad 7th gen 32gb 10.2 inch screen with WiFi only
@@Hedgeflexlfz Cool! Although, It won't have GPS...
@@pokemonguy6579 yeah. I don't think I'll need one of there is a Garmin 750 in the plane I'll be using
Great video ☺️👍 what navigation apps are u using in the video?? Greetings from Germany 😊
Foreflight
Hi Rod! I'm considering buying the iPad mini 5 as EFB, one question, for having the GPS is necessary to buy the "cellular" version, is that correct?
Correct.
I always recommend to pilots buy the version with the cellular chipset, which includes the GPS receiver.
@@RodRakic its a big jump in price. IMO i dont think its necessary. especially when ADSB are linking just fine with the standard mini 5 version for a whopping $400
Thanks for the report. Except the stylus, what can't you do with this Mini 5 that you can't do with the Mini 4. Actually, I don't see much interest in paying almost twice the price for a v5 when my Foreflight runs smooth on my Mini 4.
I agree Vincent, the stylus is nice, but I didn't see a big upgrade in the legibility of my notes over just using my finger. Maybe with more practice. ForeFlight works great on a 4, and is still solid choice in the cockpit.
I too have a Mini 4 and my interest in the 5 centers on the screen - 25% brighter with anti-glare coating. My Mooney Cadet has a bubble canopy and the '4 gets washed out big-time in the sun. I may get a 5, try it out and swap it for an Aera 660 if it doesn't look better.
If you’re happy with what you have there’s no reason to upgrade. That’s true with virtually everything!
@@lorendjones I would love this philosophy but the release of a new iPad Mini will push Apple to end support to previous one, slowly but surely. You know the story of "iOS vXX.Y not supported on your whatever-iPad". So, after few days I think the Mini v5 without much interested features is not a good news after all...
0:50 As a pilot, and in life, I’m always looking for that optimal middle ground btw silly and stupid. 😂
Jk, Great content!
What circuit breaker do you suppose that is that’s tripped? 😎
I was wondering if anyone else saw that
Hey Rod! Is drawing on the taxi diagram a feature for one of the more expensive Foreflight plans? I have the Basic $99 a year and I cant draw on my diagrams. Thanks!
Andrew annotation should be availed to you regardless of your subscription level. Here’s the video about that. ruclips.net/video/G_xNqhUEic8/видео.html
Frustrating that they used the old pencil and not the pencil 2.
I hear ya. Being able to stash the pencil magnetically would have been handy.
Buy magnetic tape.@@RodRakic
Do you think that the Mini 4 is not up to task anymore? In my country the ipad mini 5 is more than the double the price of the mini 4.
What's the name of the app
Which app are you using on flight?
ForeFlight
Do you know about the "CRAFT" template in ScratchPad for IFR clearances?
I do!
I sometimes use it. But I typically forget about and just go freestyle.
so good - i'd like one too. what HD size would you reccomend?
When it comes to Apple products, I always aim for the middle.
@@RodRakic so only $300 extra then, got it;p
I kid. My wife and mother in law both swear by their iPads but i only recently thought about it as a flight computer. Thanks for getting back to me! Fly safe
What mount are you using to mount the iPad? I have the same iPad. Also, how are you recording underneath your airplane?
Here’s the yoke mount: mygoflight.com/products/sport-mount-flex-yoke
The underbelly shot was captured with a GoPro mounted to the step on the Mooney.
How has the Yoke amount from My Go Flight worked out for you? Is it worth the money? Bought one for $50 on Sportys but have to return it because of its movement limitations over some yokes.
I use it everywhere.
If you find it limits the movement of a yoke, I’d recommend revisiting the geometry of how you position it. It’s very flexible.
Good video. Probably going to buy one for flying.
The video would be nice with some background engine noise, gets really quiet :)
How much storage would you recommend? (64 or 256 GB) Is 64 GB enough? Cheers!!
I am currently flying with my iPad mini 5 64GB. I have not run into any storage issues. My iPad is pretty much only for aviation. Other than Hulu and RUclips everything else on it is aviation related. I have Garmin pilot and ForeFlight with everything I need downloaded, and have used less then a 3rd if the storage. With that being said, if you want to use it for more then flying, and can afford the bigger storage I’d go for that.
@@erikchristopherson9700 Do you have the wifi or the cellular one? And will Foreflight work on Wifi only?
@@baldaslove I have the cellular one. Yes ForeFlight will work on the WiFi only. Although, I am pretty sure it has to be connected to a gps. The cellular version can use a WiFi source as well. The cellular version has a built in gps where the WiFi does not.
please indicate which support ther use for ipad
Should i buy a ipad or an laptop for flight school ?
hridaya bisural you’ll get a lot more out of an iPad for at Flight School.
I fly a Cessna 172. Would you recommend a kneeboard or yoke mount?
Yoke mount
Do you need the LTE to fly with thus or do you use a Hotspot
Hope you see this despite me being 4 months late haha. All you need on the iPad is the cellular model because of the gps. Without the gps inside it kind of becomes useless for you. You don’t actually need a cellular plan and the foreflight team actually recommends you turn off cellular to save battery life. It is obviously ideal if you have ads-b but if you don’t, you can always use your phone for weather or as a hotspot, or just pay for the cellular plan anyways because you have the capability. If you don’t have the plan though, just make sure you have all your stuff downloaded and up to date at home before you leave for flying.
Is cellular necessary when i have a flight lesson? or real flight?
Only iPads with cellular have GPS chipsets as well. Here I’m using the external Stratus for position data, but I recommend the cellular version.
What yoke mount are you using?
Bret I’m using a yoke mount and iPad case from MyGoFlight.
I have the 11 pro just WiFi, will I be okay to use it for flight school?
The WIFi only model won’t have have position unless you pair it with an external GPS receiver.
Hi mate ,should I get the cellular version
Yes. Even if you don’t activate service the cellular version gets you the GPS chipset.
Which app do you use?
I use ForeFlight.
ruclips.net/channel/UCETBXGcXCzXEEOQmBRWAwnA
Rod Rakic thanks
What are you using for GPS to drive the tablet?
I’m connected to a Stratus unit via WiFi.
@@RodRakic Thanks very much!
What are you using to capture the Audio?
I captured cockpit audio with the GoPro camera using an audio cable from Nflightcam.
Rod Rakic I have that. It has a nasty high pitch sound in the background.
AV8R Tom I’ll guess that’s your alternator not being properly shielded.
@@RodRakic I noticed it when the engine wasn't running, but the other day I went for a flight, and noticed my Mic was picking up everything. Even when I wasn't talking. I'm going to try turning down my mic sensitivity or playing with my squelch to see if it helps.
You are looking like that you use only one app during entire flight. Can we get the name of your iPad app???
Enes we’re running ForeFlight on the iPad. Connected to a Stratus receiver on the dash.
What app where you using?
I was using ForeFlight.
Can someone tell me what’s the name of the app he used in the iPad pls. 🥺
It’s ForeFlight. m.ruclips.net/channel/UCETBXGcXCzXEEOQmBRWAwnA
I also got
Android 4 life ;-)
Shock Cooling is a myth.. Good articles by Mike Busch and others .. Or talk to any Jump Pilot.
Oh.. Great video otherwise...
Also.. Nice Mooney... Great landing... If you can Grease a Mooney in, you can Grease anything brand C or P has... C model driver here.
You are welcome to your opinion. My experience differs.
@@RodRakic wondering if you can share your experience. I've never been able to find any proof of it, so I'd be curious to learn more
capybaras The 182 would come back from 2 weeks of glider tow ops with a cracked cylinder everytime. Then years when it didn’t tow, it would be fine. Simply my experience that repeated high power / low power ops cause damage.
Rotten music !
Not very informative, sorry guys.
Sorry you didn’t find it helpful. I look forward to your video on the topic.
