  • After a rather long wait Apple finally released a new iPad mini. Due to there small form factor it might be interesting for pilots flying in general aviation. Let's look at the differences to the previous generation and find out whether it's worth the money.

    it is so perfect it's insane. love my mini 6 as EFB. clips right into the side window and is right there for use, and small enough to not be all up in the way of your view etc.

    Im using an ipad pro 12,9 on a Legacy 600 cockpit, but it is a bit big for it so i was looking for a better option.. some captains use the 10,9 ipad air but still seem to be a bit big for the cockpit i think ill go for the mini it looks great my worry was if the foreflight app (map and charts) would look so small what do you think about that?

    Hi great video. Would you say it would be sufficient to select the WiFi- only option and then connect to your mobile hotspot when in air and ensure to have location on all navigation apps? I ordered the WiFi-only option (11” air) but now I’m a little concerned it may not be good enough. I’d be mainly using it to study for my ATPLs and some flying here and there. Thank you in advance

    The large variety of productivity/entertainment uses for the Mini demonstrates how versatile it can be for so many people. Master of Nun - But Good at a lot of stuff - Fine by me!!!
    I bought an iPad Mini 2 Cellular 10 years ago. I do not browse with it - I'm an adult - so I use my 14" laptop to browse and an Apple TV for viewing.
    After 10 years of ownership - I use my Mini almost exclusively when I "TRAVEL" - to do the following (otherwise it sits in a drawer)
    #1- as a GPS unit in my vehicles - the best GPS ever (70%) That's after over 150K miles of road trips (FYI - lots of pilots use the Mini for realtime in-flight information)- when I need a GPS around town - my iPhone works fine.
    #2 - as a Sidecar or mirror screen to view video paired with a M2 MBA (25%)
    #3 - as an eReader (4%)
    #4 - the odd miscellaneous task (1%) This might change with the pencil.
    I will likely buy the new Mini 7 when it comes out @ year end. The Mini is simply a great portable high performance device that sits between an iPhone & MBA M2 as a complimentary but not essential device.

    Very nice and informative video, as always. I have a question: does the ADSB functionality of the Sentry work in any way here in Europe? Thanks and keep doing these videos, we all learn a lot from them!

    • @ASWISSPILOT
      @ASWISSPILOT  2 года назад +1

      Hi Joan, thanks for your comment and the compliments, means a lot ;)
      Yes the Sentry does work in Europe, it will receive ADS-B signals directly from aircraft that are equipped with ADS-B out. However in Europe only a part of the GA fleet is equipped with ADS-B out, you‘ll more often see FLARM equipped airplanes while some only have a standard Mode S transponder and others do not have any of those. With sentry you‘ll only „see“ other ADS-B targets (mostly airliners, business aviation and some small GA planes), that are within reach while it doesn‘t send your own position to others in any way. Also unlike in the US there are (basically) no ADS-B ground stations that transmit weather or the complete traffic image.
      So if you‘re just flying in Europe i‘d rather suggest buying the Skyecho 2 that will also receive flarm targets. Cost should be about the same.
      And by the way: If you happen to own an airplane, or shares of one, or be in a flying club where you have the possibility to bring in a motion, make sure the planes get equipped with ADS-B out. Because if we all receive others (i.e. using Sentry) but nobody sends out, the system won‘t work. If you wanted to get further information make sure to watch the second part of the video series on traffic avoidance that I uploaded here on the channel 😉

      @@ASWISSPILOT Thanks a lot, that was the video I was searching for! I agree with you, it's a collective effort to make our flights safer, I will definitely check the equipment in our flight school and future airplanes I fly in.

    Thank you for covering this subject so well, I’am close to starting my aviation journey and feel like after this vlog that the iPad mini 6 is the right choice, now I have to decide 64 or 256

      I had the mini 5 with 64 GB, nearly enough. So with the mini 6 I ordered the 256 GB and never looked back.

    • @ASWISSPILOT

      Thank you for the compliments! It has always been enough for me, I‘ve never heard any complaints so far. We have iPad Air (4th gen) in the airline flight deck where I work, these max out at 440 nits and this is still perfectly fine 😉

    RAM do have the X-Grip Universal Holder for 7"-8" tablets but I suspect you won't fit the apple pencil on the side with this mount.

    • @ASWISSPILOT
      @ASWISSPILOT  2 года назад

      Hi Paul, thanks for your comment! Yes we had these X-Grip Mounts in my Airlines‘ Flight Simulator because multiple airlines with different devices do their training in it and somehow I don‘t like the handling of these holders… 😕

      @@ASWISSPILOT Oh, I see. I'll also wait for the mini 6 roller holder too, it's also cheaper than the X-Grip.

    Not sure what other hardware I need as far as mounting on the yoke of a 1977 Cessna 172. Afraid to buy something that doesn’t fit. I’ve looked at Ram mounts, MyGoFlight and the Pivot.

      Hi there. Not sure if I can help you, I once flew a 172N with the Ipad mini 4 and the RAM-Mounts yoke mount which worked fine…
      I don‘t see why it shouldn‘t work with the upcoming RAM mount for the new mini 6.

      I came across a website called ipadyokemounts that sold them but unfortunately they didn't do it for a Piper but I think they do it for a 172 so you might want to take a look there.
