- In this video, Mike from The Geek Pub fails at making an iPad arcade using an iPad Air, Sanwa controls, and an Adafruit EZ Key Bluetooth board. Lean why and experience the fun!
Note: At some point we will finish this video either using a different controller, or using an Android tablet.

I hate the electronics bits. I would have made sure that works (greatest uncertainty) before building the case (which has very little uncertainty)
Well, I sort of did. LOL. I tested it on an iPad Pro (the big iPad) which has different keyboard support. I had no idea the Airs were different. I will still make it work though. I bought an MFi game controller which bypasses Apple's keyboard routines and will tear it apart for its guts. Part two!
@@TheGeekPub Where is part 2? 😁 I know it's been 4 years but I'd still like to see it.
I think it's great you shared you fails. It's still great content. There were a few golden nuggets in here that I wouldn't have learned if you didn't published it. Plus it'll show us what not to do so we don't repeat the mistake.
I have a few fails I'll be sharing just for that reason.
Thanks a ton!
Android all the way.
dennis neo nah android is terrible
That's because Apple sucks! JK. I would be interested seeing this completed with an android tablet though. It's an interesting project.
even with this fail, you have earned my respect sir! :)
Well guys after spending the first weekend building this and then two subsequent weekends trying to get it to work I had to give up and move one. So I present to you my failed iPad Arcade video.
that's what you get for using Apple products!
+John R (FlatulentRage) I love all technology!
+TheGeekPub me too! Although I prefer android over ios for reasons just like this.
Turn it in to a pinball table
One way to possibly salvage the project is to rip the guts out of a ION icade stick. It is a six button arcade stick for iDevices that runs through bluetooth. Gamestop actually has been discontinuing the product, and selling them dirt cheap.
They do look cool, though :)
Thanks!
Failed miserably....
Hold your head down in shame..
Just kidding buddy! Excellent try.
I just like to raise eyebrows
I was surprised that you committed to building the cabinets before proving the electronics. I guess that is the lesson here. Thanks for sharing the failure--they say we learn more from failures than success. Maybe this could inspire a whole video about what you have learned from failures?
Bummer man! Ya win some, ya lose some, eh? But hey, you learned something and now since you shared it, I learned something! So thank you for that! Wish there was a way for you to fix it without ripping apart another game controller, but perhaps you could find a cheap one?
I think I did this wrong, my iPad screen now has T-molding in it and I have MDF glued to my face. I wish I read that this was a failed project more closely before starting it.
To fail is to succeed....YOU failed so WE could succeed! Thx for giving us a heads up on the controller issue with ipads....
Thanks for this can you try it out on a Samsung Galaxy?
Aw man, and it was going so well too. It's a good reason to get a new toy though! I dig the mini size arcade idea. Looking forward to the save video.
I will eventually finish this! ;-)
Hi, why not use some sort of usb controller? Is there OTG USB on these li'l bad bois?
Have you seen the "game Vice" ? Same concept correct? I would love to see you figure this out.
are you one of the arcade builder for arcades
Crap, sorry you went through all this to get stumped right at the finish line. I had two different Iphones since 2007 and while they work great for minimalistic stuff, I just prefer the ability of Android devices to do so much more with way less limitations, and no need to "jailbreak" just to do stuff a stock Android will do.
That’s how Apple Arcade was born.
Hi mike have you any new videos on the way?
6:48-----6:52 Dat how to basic sound though
Think of it as gaining more knowledge, not failing. Thanks for uploading it.
Hi! good afternoon. How are the specific names of adafruit and controls on Amazon? Could I make a video step by step? thanks from Spain
This really isn’t a fail.
I wouldn't class this as a fail, once you have found the correct interface device everything will be sweet. Great work and I enjoy your content
The left button should be lower than the right.
Dawg. Go build your own and shut the f*** up.
Kudos for sharing the failures too! The project looks great. Wish your electronic side of it could be solved more simply. Either way, thanks for the video. Absolutely no shame with the outcome. It took guts showing it. :-) Troy
It seems weird to thumbs up your fail. But ... Its not a fail if you learned something? :)
I wish my successes were half as good as your fails!
You are too kind!
Would this work all the stuff you just did with a galaxy tab 4 10.1 ?? i think it would fit in the cabinet you made? Thanks
Have you since then tried to fix this issue? If not have you looked into trying to see if IOS has a keystroke emulator to connect the joystick and buttons through bluetooth? Because I know there is one that android and windows has and they work great!
I found what they call "bultrol" which is a bluetooth control application that you're able to install and configure a arcade joystick and buttons to your ipad - here are a couple links that can help you further resolve your issue.
1. 'Blutrol' Will Turn Your iPad 2 + iCade Into a Legitimate Arcade Machine - ruclips.net/video/rh9Cf6kSoz4/видео.html
2. Blutrol - Makes Virtual Controlled iOS Game work with Physical Joystick and Real Buttons - ruclips.net/video/ESrHCXUkcBE/видео.html
3. Link to where you're able to download Blutrol - www.mediafire.com/file/u87jorgwcjo274r/ch.ringwald.blutrol_3.5.1-1_iphoneos-arm_%2540CaraJailbreak.deb/file
Hope this helps!!!
The only way out of this one Mike would be to jailbreak the iPad.it opens up the software so you can instal android apps on it. I'm sure there is one out there that will map the keys perfect. Nice job on the cabinets anyway.
I wanted to do it without the jailbreak so anyone could make one. I have a way to fix it. Look for part two soon!
i dont think you failed ,just throw that rotten apple in the trash and bring home some of those Hyper Green Robots
what for real..lol.. go buy a Samsung tablet and throw it in there make it bigger show people how to think on the Fly. Come on bro..lol
Oh I will. I just have too many other pressing things to finish this one right now.
Always good to see the warts and all, I had one like that it took 3 months to finish
Still a good video mate you spelt learn wrong in you description
reminds me of the 80s table top arcades back in the day , frogger etc
great design and concept! hope you get it working correctly!
Not a fail, just work in progress!
well worth posting, enjoyed watching.
Thanks for being a fan!
Would a jailbroken iPad and some emulators work though?
I'm pretty sure most emulators (from Cydia or something) have the ability to use gamepads/input devices not supported natively.
I haven't been in the jailbreaking scene for a while now (ever since I got my 6P) so I'm not 100% about everything.
hey cat_toutcher i really like your idea thegeekpub schould see this
Apple being no good, when did that ever happen before :v
Id you jail break the iPad get mame can't you use it then?
I Have happy chick on my iPad and iPhone has emulator and games all in . I bought a remote 20 quid Bluetooth and it came with happy chick installation..
Anyway yea just get a tablet the same size it will work I reckon
Yes. But I wanted to this without a jailbreak. There will be a part two. ;-)
I ran into this with the 8bitdo controllers, they support iOS in keyboard mode not game controller mode and the app support is very limited. I wonder if there is a small Bluetooth controller that supports Mfi which is Apple's controller protocol.
I'm not sure. My plan when I revisit this is to rip the guts out of a Nimbus or some other MFi controller and sacrifice them to the Apple gods. I just can't spend anymore time on this project right now.
So glad I found your blog and the awesome info about that annoying spammer! I pinned it on several boards to help pass the knowledge and I report all comments I ever see by them. All RUclipsrs need to know they can set banned words so that they never pop up...Maybe you should do a video on this 😉
Thank you!
Happens to all of us, Mike! I appreciate seeing them!
so you build the whole thing before testing it? talk about doing thigs backwards ... but who would like to play on those super reflective screens anyway :p
No, I did test it. With an iPad Pro which has a different API. I explained that.
Honestly it's not a fail video, just a speed bump and "Too be continued...." I would say go with the Android device route when your ready to visit this again down the road due to Android is more accommodating and cheaper for a nice little tablet arcade! Enjoyed the video and like the honesty...looking forward to the squeal in the future!
put small screens in later that fit and do PI systems. its not a tablet but it fixes the problem lol. good job and not a fail just a black spot for IOS.
I already have it working on iOS, I just haven't had time to make a video about it.
Solid effort! Still love the content!
i know you will finish it! im sure there are lots of devices you can fit in there... aaand you're a genius!
is this channel dead?
the newest video i can see is from 6 months ago(this one)
There will be a new one in about 5 minutes. I take a break every now and then.
oh haha ok
I love this channel
*very sharp razor knife*
Anymore videos on the way mike..?
I have 5 in various stages of completion.
Great videos you do a great job. I am sure you will find how to resolve this. If not you can use an ipad 2 lcd screen+hdmi controller board +rpi and do the same or more
I have an Android Tablet that I wouldn't mind trying this with if I have a chance.
Hey Mike, will you be making a video about arcade cabinets and emulators for android devices?
Make sure the USB cable is disconnected (not powered) when working on the other end!
Your-a arcade-man
Glad you shared! The form factor and shape are fantastic. I hope you make it back around to this one!
I learn even more from fails than from regular videos, so I'm glad you posted this.
That's why Apple sucks.
They all suck. Apple just "Sucks Different"
so cool
Can it work in Android
hey man where are you??? we miss your videossss
Life changes. I'll be back towards the end of January.
fair play mate, happens to the best of us looks kick ass though
Excelentes tus trabajos y proyectos ! lastima que este fallo ! me sorprende la excelentísima calidad de tus trabajos, sigue así .-
What is the name of the bit you used to cut the slot for the t molding? thanks.
T-Slot cutter
TheGeekPub thank you bro..
You can use a Raspberry pi and a old display.
Raspberry Pi Zero would be a good choice. How big of an area do you have? I have no idea how large an iPad Air is. There are HDMI screens in many sizes. If you have any problem finding a Pi Zero let me know.
I want that cabinet still. How much? I love it
Do you have plans to make a Computer case out of wood?
I hadn't thought about that, but it is an interesting idea!
Great Hope to see it one time , I subbed though there is plenty of cool stuff on your channel :)
If you can build a wooden box you can make a computer case out of wood. 1982, visiting my cousin's computer group, one of his friends had an original IBM PC desktop in a wooden case. It was ridiculously heavy.
Apple just sucks doesn't it?
Not really.
worth it i learned what t molding is
Check out my bigger arcades then! ;-)
Awesome concept! Wouldn't the button configuration be easier to use if the buttons went from bottom left to upper right and not upper left to bottom right?
There's not enough room. I'll cover that in part two.
ahahha you are a honest man...
shouldve used samsung...
he did not had a andriod or windows tablet at all
iPhones and iPads are garbage
Opinions are like assholes...
@@TheGeekPub yep....everybody has one and sometimes they stink.
Awesome! man the quality of your work is top notch!
Thanks for being a fan!
Just resolder it all to a bluetooth gamepad
Won't work. It has to be a mFI controller.
put another tablet in at this rate :/
not reason they wont fit
I already hacked and mFI controller and have it working. I just haven't made the video yet. Very busy time for me right now with my day job and family. I'll be back next month.
if you still have it you can just give it to me lol
another reason to stay away from crappy apple products
Use a raspberry pi 3 you can install something called ratropie and play old games
You must be new here.
TheGeekPub ?
I only have like 7 or 8 videos on that topic...
TheGeekPub well then
its ios :(
of course it didnt work !............because APPLE !!! lol :) not your fault it didnt work............the board and switches you used didnt have the chips with the apple codes in them ! :)
Did this channel die without anyone noticing?
No sir. It was just on hiatus for a little while. Follow me on facebook. Whole slew of videos in the works right now.
TheGeekPub Ah, OK.
The 99cent store sells "vr glasses with controler" for a buck, the controller is ios and android bluetooth. Take the controller apart, scratch up the button contacts and sodder the wires to it.
Just get a galaxy tab and replace the ios BS. Project complete. My total respect to you sir. No fail, great learning to you and all of us.
If someone can't work out an angle like that then I'm surprised they can even read a tape measure🤔
You might be surprised. ;-)
