    DIAGNOSING ALERT. My deck was making a god-awful screeching and clicking noise when the blades were engaged (more on the right side). Everything… spindle, idlers, etc seemed tight. Took off clutch and it appeared fine. Installed new spindle. Still making noise. Replaced new idler. Still making noise. Finally took off clutch again and disassembled. Plates appeared scored. MUST be the clutch. After replacing with new clutch…STILL making noise. $hit…. Turns out it was the metal cup just above the blade that keeps debris out of the bearing that wore loose and spinning. Probably due to mixing and matching different parts from different spare spindles there was a bit of play. Wedged a bit of twine around it (yeah, its Macgyvered) to snug it up and back to normal. Just something to keep in mind.

    i put on one new spindle also and it's still making a noise so I need to inspect. The one I replaced actually broke while running and was making a major noise. Not as bad now and it's cutting fine but still an irritating enough noise so I will inspect the deck.

      @@MunkyWrench yes indeed I just wish I would have investigated when I first started hearing the noises. It ended up breaking the spending when I even try to JB welding LOL. I actually cut 4 maybe 5 or 10 minutes or so with it fine until it started vibrating a little bit. Will do

    So the higher pitched scraping sound that the spindles are making when you turn them manually is NORMAL? And the lower pitched scraping sound is abnormal? Interesting. I came looking for a fix for that higher pitched scraping sound thinking it was a problem. Hmmm. I only hear it when I DISENGAGE the blades and the spindles "scrape" to a stop. Can someone shed some light for me? Offer some confirmation?

      Usually the higher pitch scraping sound you here is the brake pad touching the pulley when you disengage the blades.. those pads are very hard and there's usually dirt and rust on them and the pulley so you usually hear scraping.. that is 100% normal.. you can take some sandpaper to the pulley and it will quiet it down.. I have even sprayed a little oil on the pads to keep them quieter.. its not like brake pads on a car where u never put oil on a pad.. all it does it put a little friction on the pulleys so they stop.. many machines I work on have removed the pads.. just be aware the blades will take a while to stop so keep your toosies clear.. the spindle bearings are more of a low pitch grinding noise often accompanied by a slight wobble.. hope this helped.. I am always here to answer questions

    What does it mean if my pullies are wobbling? And will that kick the belt every 10 minutes fme

    • @MunkyWrench
      @MunkyWrench  2 года назад +1

      If your pulley is wobbly the center bearing is probly worn or failing.. it will definitely kick belt off.. need to service or replace.. pulley is cheaper than belts lol..

    I have a mid 90s Troy bilt and found my double pulley was set up for a tractor with 20" wheels my tractor has 23" so it's basically about flipping the pull so the welded on nut screws on first but because of the stress it wore the brass/tin bearing bushings out on the 2 tensioner brackets causing the drive pulley to grind against the deck.
    My question?? Does anyone know the easiest way to install the new brass/tin bushings into the steal sleeves it's a Troy bilt or bolens 48" model #14052 mower deck thanks
