- I wanted to start sharing keyboards that interest me and for the first one, I chose the Keychron Q9. This $170 40% keyboard comes fully assembled, sports an aluminum case, metal plate, and double gasket mount. In this video, we'll take a look in the box, tear it down to get a closer look inside, and talk about it.

Commenting for the algorithm, you already know I loved the video. Looking forward to more board reviews
Thanks for the video. This was super helpful.
so impressed with your ability to maintain a high wpm swapping between qwerty-staggered & ortho-colemak!!
i really embrace and still recommend Keychron to anyone interested in getting into mechanical keyboards: i think they provide an excellent entry point into the hobby.
while the Q9 isn't for me aesthetically, that's really just a testament to how chaotically open and subjective keyboards are.
I was kind of surprised at the insight on the stabilizers with concern to printing and building keebs; are DIYers really limited to just using plate-mount stabilizers? Is there not an option to 'heat-sink' threaded screw holes into a plate and then use screw-in stabs from there? i've been hating trying to get a test-print just right to work for some salvaged plate-mount stabilizers and would love to avoid it entirely if i can 😅😅
kudos on the review!
Haha, I wish I could swap between QWERTY and Colemak… I just rebind all my boards to Colemak. Swapping between staggered and ortho though is easy for me somehow.
I’m sure there is a way to make screw in stabs work and I’ll investigate it one day. To me it’s just simpler to use plate mount ones even with the tolerance issues that are common.
@@joe_scotto swapping between QWERTY and colemak isn't too bad! It took me about 2-3 weeks to be able to seamlessly switch between the two.
Many Thanks!
Very nice!
So cool!
Keep wanting to get this board. I'm really liking Keychron's "tape sheet" implementation in their recent boards.
Yeah, I thought that was a nice addition. A lot of keyboards just toss the PCB in there with nothing on the back.
I think one reason they went with backslash instead of backspace is that this way they didn't need to manufacture a unique cap for this keyboard only (backspace 1.5U). Just slap a common keycap and done.
Same thing with Tab, where Escape seems more logical.
spacebar is crazy kinda want one ngl
It will be VIA compatible out of the box once the pull request is merged by the VIA team. It was the same with other Q boards before, which now work out of the box. Not something Keychron has control over, unfortunately.
I started my Keychron journey with the K2, wanted something smaller, and went to a plank and then preonic. Recently went to the K6 Pro, and looked at the Q9. I'm concerned about the absence of the number and function keys, but can easily be compensated for with programming. For programming I prefer the standard QMK environment, I've not liked the VIA environment much, but also use the REMAP web application for the K6. Great videos..
I too prefer QMK. I use a lot of more advanced features along with sharing the keymap between all my boards. It just makes it easier if it’s all in code.
can you make an explanation video on keyboard knobs?
I have their split version (Q10) and it is amazing. I also had a same problem with VIA. It seems that it is a common issue.
I very much like Alice style boards, I just wish there were more 40% versions because 60% and above is way too many keys 😂
@@joe_scotto couldn't agree more. Also split keyboard from them would be also nice.
this looks pretty cool, I would buy it if i could
I hope they make a 'V' version of this, the value would be incredible!
it would be even cooler if they made a budget planck alternative but that might be stretching it, ahaha
then again, as mainstream as they are, keychron seems to listen to enthusiasts.
Yeah I really hope more big companies start making smaller boards especially if affordable.
But what about the numbers, functions and so. How friendly will we find it.
Poron gaskets are a typical material for gasket mount boards. I don’t know if that’s what Keychron is using here. If they degrade over time, it *should* be possible to get some gasket strips of the right thickness and cut new ones. It would take many years. Perhaps Keychron would sell extras. Seems like a nice board. Is the backing necessary to avoid shorts or just for acoustics?
This is my first experience with a gasket mount so that would make sense, I just always assumed they were some sort of rubber. They are just held on by adhesive so definitely easily replaceable. The backing shouldn't be necessary to avoid shorts and is more likely for acoustics. That said, separating a metal case from the electronics with an additional layer is always a good idea so it's welcomed regardless of the reasoning.
Definitely a super nice board I would recommend... especially considering it's $170 for everything!
@@joe_scotto It’s a valid concern. There is a thread on Keebtalk positing how lasting such things are. And some boards do use silicone gaskets or have the option for them.
Stupid question, how do you use a keyboard with no numbers? Do you have to use like in screen keyboard when you want to use them? It looks beautiful but I don’t understand if it’s practical
I hold one of my thumb buttons and then it activates my number layer on home row.
@@joe_scotto ohhhhhhhhhhhhh fuck !!!! That totally makes sense like a shift key but for numbers or arrow keys or what not. That’s actually really neat
That foam is normal gasket mount and what you are talking about is a gummy O-ring or older gasket mount
Cool so I am just dumb then 😂
do you recomendo the v8 alice keyboard?
If it’s built anything like the Q9 I have, absolutely!
@@joe_scotto ok thanks
About who reads the manual. well some of us do still. I am not even 30. Given is a well put together one, it shows me the though process of the engineer and sometimes for smaller documents it is good to have it at hand. especially if you are doing maintance on something like a pc tower and you want the mobo manual.
And for the who uses \ and | well "many" of us are programmers and/or write proves in latex. Many probably a hyperbola but you get what I mean.
Thank you for sharing your keymap, because I want to create a more advanced version of my ergodash qmk firmware and honestly sometimes a finished project is the best thing not because it is better than documentation, but because it has many finished ideas in there and it is like a cool filter to focus on some features.
Also thanks for the video on the keychron board. A friend that doesn't care about ergonomics, but cares about sound wants to buy a new board and videos like yours seem to point out to me that I am right to recommend them to her.
its a bit weird how you dont know how the gasket mount works; but its an extremely common material to use for gasket mount as it allows the keyboard to make the typing softer like you showed in the video. even holy grails like the singa kohaku use strip gaskets. Gummyworms are also 'gasket' but they're more commonly referred to as o ring mount to make it less confusing
non ortho 40 o.O
Shocking I know 😂
