I can't help but wonder if people would agree that if Chopin would be alive today he would also believe that this is one of the best - if not THE best - performers of his music.
Thank you ADGO for this awesome concert with Mikhail Pletnev’s GENIUS at the keyboard. I am enjoying this magical concert on March 1 2023, supposedly,Chopin’s birthday (1840) according to a classical radio announcer in 🇨🇦. Maestro Pletnev is obviously celebrating Chopin too!
Mr. Pletnev brings original ideas and new possibilities to the interpretations of these great works of Chopin. And they are convincing!
Ballade 1 always brings tears to my eyes. That ecstasy in the midsection. I haven't heard to played quite like this. Wow.

Mikhail Pletnev is the master of silence and whisper.
I love his embellishments, especially in the Op 9 No. 2 nocturne, just gorgeous and mind-blowingly good tone.

A highly original pianist! I've never heard the Chopin Fantasie played in this extremely personal and wild way. It might not be "Urtext" playing, but it's utterly compelling. Mikhail Pletnev recreates the Fantasie in an unforgettably original manner--truly an extraordinary musician!

Forgive me for not knowing Russian. I've played the piano as an "ungifted amateur" for 50 years, but, yes, I can't claim to be "close to any performing tradition" beyond the many piano recitals I have attended over the years and many recordings I have listened to. I did get to hear Horowitz, Richter, and Gilels live, and for that I'm very grateful. Particularly for having gotten to hear Horowitz in Chicago. Even though it was a bad time for Horowitz, during his so-called "medicated period," and he had memory lapses, it was still the most incredible piano sound I have ever heard in a live recital. As for this performance by Mikhail Pletnev of the Chopin Fantasie, it does strike me as a highly original interpretation of this great work. It is "wayward" and almost feels improvised, something I've never heard in other performances of the Fantasie. It is a fascinating performance for me! For a more conservative but equally compelling in a different way, I recommend Youri Egorov's Carnegie Hall recital performance of the Fantasie. That's also a marvelous performance. @@Radiatoron88Yours are very interesting (and well-argumented, in my view) comments. May I ask you what do you think of Horowitz' sound in comparison to Pletnev's? Have you ever heard Pletnev live? I had the chance yesterday to attend a recital and thought: this has to be how Horowitz and Cherkassky sounded live back in the day (at least in part). Though there certainly are differences, for instance Horowitz was often vulgar in certain choices and always wanted to 'spell-bind' his audience, while Pletnev does not have such attitude (or at least the Pletnev I heard yesterday did not). Curious to hear what you think about this. Thanks!

I have never had a chance to hear Pletnev live, unfortunately. I have only heard him in a few recordings. I really love his performance of Grieg's "Carnival Scene." You can watch it by clicking on this link: ruclips.net/video/ATVjNW7upCY/видео.html
I suppose Pletnev is a more "intellectual" pianist than Horowitz was, for better and/or for worse. With both pianists, I find that I really love much of what they do but don't care for some of their interpretations. But that's true of any two pianists.
I'm not sure that "spellbinding" an audience is always a bad thing. I am just an ungifted amateur pianist myself, and am no doubt very far from having great intellectual insight into music and musicians. But I must admit that Horowitz's recordings have left their mark on me more than any other pianist I can think of. Actually, although the virtuosic Horowitz can certainly be spellbinding (in good ways, I think) as in his live recording of the Liszt "Scherzo and March," it's very often the depth and warmth of his tone that most affects me. For example, in his recording of the Schumann "Blumenstuck," "Humoreske," or the Op. 2 no. 1 Etude in C-sharp minor by Scriabin. There's a kind of "3D vividness" about his sound projection in that Scriabin Etude that is incredible. Not to mention the full-blooded passion that he brings to his interpretation. Clearly, I "imprinted" on Horowitz a long time ago, and he still has that mesmerizing effect on me--which I'm very grateful for! Horowitz's sound so often
was orchestral in a way that it was like he wasn't "just playing a piano," and that's something that has always really appealed to me. I can only honestly say that I have never heard another pianist in recital who had the kind of large scale orchestral, "multi-timbral" sound that Horowitz projected. You can still hear that sound even in "just" recordings. Of course, he could also be an immaculately pristine player as well--as in for instance his recording of Scarlatti Sonatas. But I most love his passionate interpretations of Romantic repertoire. I love his later recordings of the Liszt Sonata. They are not "technically perfect," but they really grab my heart!
Regarding what you refer to as the vulgarity in some of Horowitz's choices, although I sometimes feel that he overpowers some music, on the whole I'm moved by the passion that he delivers. His "not playing it safe" is something that I deeply respect and am grateful for. He once said in an interview that in order to perform music, he had to "have both the angelic and the demonic within himself" in order to do justice to the music. If not literally, then be able to identify with the angelic and the demonic in order to bring music to life. Horowitz is famous for having said something like "The music is beyond the notes." Meaning the spirit of the music. Wanda Horowitz said that Horowitz was the first pianist she ever heard who didn't bore her. One last quote from Horowitz: "A concert is not a lecture."
I love that in some of Pletnev's playing, we hear that he is not at all afraid to "leave his stamp" on the music. As a listener, I want to hear what a given interpreter feels in their interpretation. That is, I'm not interested in "urtext" performances in which the performer's own spirit doesn't come through as well in the performances. Although I might not always like a given performer's choices, I'm glad to hear--and want to hear--what they want to "highlight" in their music making.

A cosmically huge account and interpretation of a bonafide colossus. He makes it sound like a symphonic fantasy for piano! It is like I heard for the first time. Pletnev makes this masterpiece uniquely his and ours. PWG
One of my all time favourite is the Polonaise Fantasie op. 61, he played at 44:17. Richter and Rubinstein played it more convincing, but Pletnev, even with his strange tempi and change of rythm, everthings sounds interesting with such a golden tone (only reminding on Gilels). Great artist.
Beautiful recording. Pletnev’s Chopin recordings have made me love Chopin again. A lot of his playing (with Rachmaninov as well) is as if I’m hearing the piece for the first time, that makes him to me so outstanding.

Pletnev is one of the few imaginative pianists around today. He has great respect for Chopin's writings as exhibited in this recital. His tone is luminous and his phrasing is original but within the bounds set by The Poet of the Piano. Niktok.
Anyone who has ever seen a page of Chpin knows this aint ever been Chopin's style nor one condoned by any of the schools of piano on any continent . Itis what jazz rtists do to standards .rthought.its wonderful. Chopin for our times !

Pletnev is different . He must have conviction to be at the top and yet do these strange unchopinish things. Still , it is a fascinating mind meeting Choin like Gould meeting bach cuz what Gould does to Bach ain't marzel tov either ut most of us love it. I wonder if crazy Landowska ever heard him .I know she heard Tureck and she might have been the one she saiid youplay himyour way and i himplay him his way . The woman's solo Mozart is really the most unthinking piano playing besides my own Ive ever heard . Second hearing of Pletnev's Fantasie amazes may be as idiosyncratic as Hofmann or so many of his generatio. If Chopin didn't like Beethoven he would have hated these sfzorzandi and impossible , frightenig Sectralist schol of bases . After the concert the basses were still giving off pussyheat and harmonics . Pletnev will one day be lauded applauded for his affair in Tobago,Philliines,Thailand or wherevr dee hell it was .His recordings from the teen are exciting as Horowitz almost . I would love to kow what other pianits kknowledgable about past and present Chpinplaying think about this revelatory stuff. It aint Chinbut it's riveting music . Then again this is done in jazz and IS JAZZ ETHIC as brought to he fore in Pogorelich's playing .Its about time too!

Великолепно! Браво!!!!! Гениальное исполнение Шопена! А вот режиссёрам звукозаписи - позор! Тупо убавлять громкость звука и тембры на громких местах,а прибавлять на тихих - это отвратительно! Очень мешает при прослушивании. Без ушей что-ли совсем?!
I love Pletnev but not in Chopin... I hated this Fantasy and forget about the Polonaise Fantasy and f minor nocture... :) and remember, "de gustibus no est disputandum."
Whether you LIKE it or not is of no moment, The point is that his playing is absolutely SPELLBINDING. It is impossible to be INDIFFERENT to it, and that alone make it marvelous. I couldn't help but note his interpretations of the works I studied and performed, myself, struck me at first as bizarre, distorted, and borderline unacceptable, -- probably because it never occurred to me -- or any of the great teachers wth whom I worked -- that anything like that was even faintly possible. (!) HOWEVER, the mazurkas, and the first nocturne he performed transcended the limits of mere piano playing and transported me, as if by magic, to a realm of wonder, beauty, and prayerful contemplation I never dreamed existed. Would I play the Fantasy, the G-Minor Ballade and the F-Minor Nocturne as he did? No! Of course not, -- even if I could --, but that doesn't stop me from being grateful that PLETNEV did.

May I recomend to you something ? please listen Chopin from Richter, or Pollini or Michelangeli or some chinese pianist like Wuya Wang (or something like this) Theirs Chopin interpretation is possibly much more close to your imagination and musical taste and fantasy. PS They do not have even a wrong key, !
