Was just watching his life changing performance of the preludes, thinking how much I'd love to hear him in these little worlds, and here we are. And it is every bit as satisfying as I could've imagined. Pure magic in this man's hands.

Always great to hear some Pletnev live recordings, as his recording repertory is not as large and he can play so differently one day after the other. And this particular recording is marvellous, he has such a flair for those mazurkas !
Forgoing any superlative adjectives, Mikhail Pletnev has unraveled the uncanny ghost of transcendent pianism. He has the most beautiful tone quality, and his remarkable technical command of the piano is simply employed for musical purposes. His pellucid pianism reminds me of the Kontarsky Borthers, Now, what makes these former pianists so remarkable is the sparkling quality, that is to say, their playing is neither digital nor monochrome or monotone, and therefore, they stand as brilliants clouds shining above the glaucous lake of reflections, imitators and replicas in the world of music. So many pianists can scoop out as many pellucid notes (clarity of touch) out of the string-board, but only a handful of pianists have been able to create their own distinctive, pearly quality, and fewer have been able to have a seance with the spirit world of the piano. As an organic instrument, it is believed that the secret to those haunting notes lies in the damper pedal, but also to a keenly, if perhaps unteachable, sense-perception of the piano timbre...who knows what it is?
I think you meant "Forgoing", and there is one superlative in your paean. But, yes, you're right. Fortunately, there are still pianists who can do all these things. I'm thinking of Sokolov and Volodos in particular. As for younger pianists, do listen to Alexander Gadjiev and Nicolas Namoradze. The Golden Age of pianism is not over; you just have to look harder for the nuggets.

One of the most interesting recordings of the mazurkas I've ever heard. Somewhat in the direction of Michelangeli's more abstract approach, though he doesn't render the mazurka rhythm as angular as ABM does. You can love or hate what he does in op. 17 no. 4 or op. 68 no. 4 but the mastery and originality are out of this world.

A very deep and personal interpretation. From ordinary dances he created small philosophical introspective works full of unexpected musical richness. That is exactly why M. Pletnev is the greatest pianist of our time.

His playstyle if fabulously suited for the Mazurkas. I don't think he oughta touch the nocturnes, though. With mazurkas, what he is doing is an honest and heartfelt original interpretation, whereas his nocturnes feel forced and squirrelly.
The most wonderfully capricious and imaginative interpretation of the Chopin mazurkas I've heard. The F minor mazurka at the end is absolutely heartrending the way he plays it.

Чрезмерно "разжёвывает" форму, чрезмерно "расталдычивает" динамику, акценты преувеличены... Тут этого (слава Богу!) ещё нет.
