  • What a fun store to explore! Come along for my first time shopping at Aldi. Aldi is not a store we have in Alaska, so I really enjoyed checking it out. Wish I could shop there more often for their great deals!

Fun Aldi fact, when they first opened, the employees that rang up the order not only had to key in each item, they had to memorize the price of all items in the store. Thank goodness for them that was improved on.

For future reference, if you don't have a quarter for your cart, most employees will loan one, Also, it is often the case that a customer will just give their cart to someone when they are done.

If you don't have a quarter, use a house key. Take it off your key chain and use the rounded end.

Aldi is a Swedish/German grocery store, so alot of their items are imported from Sweden and Germany. They also do things in a Swedish/German way.
You can easily tell what is an Aldi brand just by looking at the back of the packaging, just like Walmart.
Aldi charges a quarter for a basket so that you will bring it back. By doing this, they don't have to hire people get baskets from the parking lot. This is one way they keep prices low. Most grocery stores in Europe also do this, but they charge more per cart.
They don't give away free sacks. You either have to bring your own bags, buy their expensive bags, or pull an empty box off the shelf. Aldi is one of few stores that actually encourages you to take empty boxes so they don't have to break them down and recycle them or throw them away. These are 2 more ways Aldi keeps prices low.
Aldi was founded on the principle of making customers do a little more work so they can save more money.

Aldi and Trader Joe’s are brothers from Germany. I buy gluten free items from them both. I am very happy we got an Aldi’s. Oh, I go to Sam’s and Costco, too. Plus several local stores. No one has all the gluten free items. Enjoy.

I think you can ask for a quarter at the cashier. Then just return it. Also, lots of other shoppers notice people who don't have one and offer one for free. I do that all the time, or give my returned cart to them with the quarter still inside. It's a nice store.

  • @OMGitsaClaire

About 95% of Aldi is their store brand products with names that vary by food category. That’s one of the ways they save money. Another is the carts. Making you put it back to get your quarter back means they don’t have to employ cart wranglers. Not taking things out of boxes is another way they save money. (You could have picked up any empty box you saw to carry your loot around. That is encouraged.) another way they save money is they don’t play any music in their stores. Those ad-free music stations grocery stores use cost money! I like shopping there because their prices are great and to me the smaller stores with less variety of items is less overwhelming. I get a lot of basics mainly: fruits and veggies enough for the week, bread, snacks, milk, yogurt (theirs is definitely the cheapest) eggs, and pasta and sauce. I also will buy fun things too. Their cheese section is great and ever-changing with specialty cheeses from all over the world. Their chocolates are also fantastic and most are made in Europe. They have a sea salt dark chocolate where you get five snack-sized bars in a box and it feels super luxurious for just $1.99. I also really like their home finds section for all kinds of stuff. We got a 4 person tent over the summer. It’s not super fancy, but it’s pretty nice and I think it was $49.99. My favorite casserole dish I have came from Aldi and is a knock-off of the Le Creuset ceramic lidded ones. I think it was $19.99. They go all out with German stuff at Christmas too. It’s very fun. And at Thanksgiving they have the absolute best prices on turkeys.

      @SusanH578 7 месяцев назад +2

Many stores do not play music. Not because of cost savings but for the fact that they do not like music playing in the store that may be off putting to customers.

ALDIS is a German-based company 90% of their goods are imported from Germany. The most wonderful time to shop at Aldi‘s is in September and beginning of October they bring in all the fabulous German foods for Oktoberfest and the prices are so wonderful and if you hit it at a good time, they do have specials on their wines, meats, cheeses, and just all around kitchen stuff and household goods. Glad you got to experience a trip to ALDIS

We live Aldi! I was excited thinking you had an Aldi in AK. Maybe some day. You can always ask the cashier for a quarter. Sometimes they'll lend you one, or they'll give you change. Lots of their stuff is made my name brand mfg but it is all made to Aldi standards. They have a Twice as Nice Guarantee too. Their chocolates are so good. That goodie aisle is affectionately referred to as The Aisle of Shame or AOS. There a are Facebook groups devoted to Aldi fans. I'm glad you enjoyed your trip. Your boys are so good. Everett! I don’t go to Aldi as often as I’d like but they are amazing! If you are one who cares about food dyes and such, aldis is a great place to go. Most of their stuff if not all of it has no food dyes in it. So that’s a major plus for a lot of parents who try to stay away from the dyes.

I find the nut area boxes the best with a lid if u need it. Ok then pile your needed items in. And walk, or you can go to the counter first grab 2 fancy reinforced bags fill them up as you shop and pay for the bags easy

First shopped at Aldi when I lived in Germany in the 1980s, as soon as they arrived in UK I started shopping there and now they are so popular and in nearly every town. They change their specials on Sunday and Thursday. These are seasonal and include Chilcare, Christmas, Halloween, Gardening, Crafts and many others. We always shop on Thursday morning at 8am normally the car park is empty but this time it was nearly full. The reason was they were having a wooden toy event and with Aldi events once things are sold out that is it. Mums were definitely shopping for Christmas the toys are good quality and price. It was interesting seeing how different the stock is. Hope all is going well with the pregnancy. 🎉

I read up on the history of Aldi's and its origins. Really interesting. Started by brothers who later split the company with one remaining in Germany/Europe and the other brother spread to outside Europe. From what I remember the company is split yet still under an umbrella company. In order to sell your items at Aldi's and its sister stores the product had to meet certain guidelines. I think Trader Joe's is a sister company too. What you saw is the general set up for every Aldi I have ever been to. Having a quarter, reusable bags and a willingness to experience unknown brands makes it a great place to shop and save money.

Aldi is one of the grocery stores I go to for specific things (we live north of Houston) ... their "lite" bread is very good and much less expensive than other brands at other grocery stores. I buy a fair amount of produce there and most of the cheeses that we enjoy. Their cauliflower crust pizzas are delicious, eggs and butter are generally less expensive ... and their frozen food selection is good. We went to an Aldi in Italy, I think, that had a fresh bakery where I got some delicious sweet rolls. Aldi is a favorite place!

FYI Trader Joe’s and Aldi’s are not owned by the same Company. The two owners are distant cousins both have the first name of Aldi, but, have never been in business together. The companies have always been separate.

Correct! People get confused because there are 2 “Aldi’s”, Aldi North and Aldi South (but in German, because they are German companies) and while both are owned by the same family, brothers or cousins, or something, they are not under the same corporate umbrella. One owns Trader Joe’s in the USA and Aldi stores in Germany, while the other has the Aldi stores in the USA. So same family, same first name, but separate ownership. 😀😀😀

    Hi Lauren
It’s great that you got to experience Aldi it does have a majority of home brands. . The fresh produce is always good value. I also love their special buys section which is generally in the centre of the store. Which can include clothing, gardening, hobbies. Gift ware for children is always at a good price.

I am not a huge Aldi fan when it comes to my grocery shopping but only because there isn’t enough variety for me and also I need to buy in bulk that being said, I do love their holiday area and plants

I haven't been to an Aldi's in over 8 years. Back then they ONLY had their brand, no name brand items. They're not convenient for me to bother shopping. Prices seem comparable to my area. I actually haven't been in any kind of store in probably 6 months. I'm physically not able to do much and I don't like shopping with my husband 😂. As always thanks for sharing!! ❤

I did. too, only problem is they had so many things for “purchase” in there, it left barely any room for my leftovers. 😂 Super cute though!

Love Aldi. Prices are reasonable. Good selection! At Christmas my family loves all the German chocolates 🍫 Most the stores similar as yours . Just remember bring your own bags & shopping carts 25 cents.

You’ll find Specialty Brand all over ALDIs. They made a chocolate peanut butter ice cream that tasted like a frozen Reese’s cup. For some reason, they quit making it

That is a pretty big Aldi, compared to where I live. That is at least 50% bigger than all of the ones in my State. And the Spekulatius cookies are the best. We wait all year for those.

In Europe, we need a coin (usually 1 or 2 euro/pounds/franks) for every supermarket cart, so we usually keep a few in the car. You often get coin-like tokens from places like car sales rooms, banks etc, that you can keep on your key ring, instead of using actual money.

Interesting! It is not a thing in Alaska so I didn’t even remember to grab something. I eventually grabbed an empty box to carry my loot in.

I shop at aldi weekly in NC. Unfortunately that pasta doesn’t cook up well, definitely cook it Al dente! The German snacks get me at Christmas! I buy and eat too many!
