    Ralfy
Lawrence gave me a bottle to try a dram and I was quite impressed. I have it right in front of me and I am enjoying it immensely. Always a pleasure watching your shows, take care and hope to see you again in Victoria

This was actually the first whisky I ever tried; obviously the taste was quite alien to me, at first, but, after a few tries (over a few months), I loved it, and it's now my favourite.

I'm drinking this as I watch, Ralf. Strangely, the first and second drams of this I had seemed nut-less, but now, on the third dram (spread-out over as many weeks, I might add!), I'm noticing the hazelnut at the finish. It's definitely very dry after a flash of sweetness as you first sip it, and sour/citrus as well. A hint of spice perhaps, but my palate isn't experienced enough to detect any peat.

Thanks Ralphy, always wondered about this one on the shelf with the odd labels while I was buying my single malts usually from Islay. Well I bought a bottle on the strength of your review and it now joins the 8 or so single malts in my everyday drinking collection as the only blend. It is quite simply delicious and astounding value. My bottle shop here in Sydney has four or five bottles left and I have two in reserve and given it is going out of production am tempted to get he rest for $38 aussie. Cheers Ralphy, all the best.

Yes, the label is a like reading the promo for a hollywood movie. Put me off a few times with the BS but finally tried it and saw your review. Glad I did both. (Bought in Aus from Dan Murphies).

Have you ever tried Milroy's of Soho Blended Malt? Very similar, but very slightly peatier and with a longer finish. Possibly the best £20 whisky I've ever tasted.

I am absolutely loving this stuff Ralfy, I've tried 15 year old single malts that don't have the style, complexity and depth of this whisky. I am so certain there is (Oloroso?) sherry cask influence in this drop - I can damn well smell it and taste it. Big sweet spicy nose, cinnamon and old orange there too. Definitely a tart zing on the palate with a medium to late arrival - dry finish and there is certainly a hint of smoke and peat in the background. Incredible to me that this sells for so little when others are going for so much ... surprisingly complex also, wow! This will be my regular dram no doubt.

Now discontinued Ralfy :-( just bought myself the last three bottles they had at the store to stock up. Will have to sip them slowly and make them last a lifetime! This is a real shame - goodbye old friend, my favourite blend.

I managed to get a couple of bottles in of this before it all sold out everywhere. Sad times and a shame Glenmorangie didn't see the use of a fine blend, now do I keep them or do I drink them? Keep up the good work Ralfy!

Brilliant review, I saw this in DMurphys (aussie) the other day, read the label and didn't buy because of the 'over the top' language! (bought a Big Peat instead, at double cost mind you).
Glad I watched your review, will probably buy now as its only $34 Aus. Thanks again, keep up the great work.

bought a bottle today on offer at a mere 15 notes. at the same price as JWRL and the ghastly teacher's highland hangover, I wasn't expecting much. pouring it in to a glass you notice how viscous it is. reminds me of the ethanol syrup that dribbles out of a good moonshine still. woop yeah! anyway. nose: if you were out on a cold day up a hill somewhere, I dunno, doing the fandance or some shit, you'd say this had no appreciable nose whatsoever. you'd be right. it smells of, err, nowt. in a warm room with some perseverance (and sniffing an emptied glass like the proverbial frank booth) there is a faint oaky floral nose. with definite sherbert and citrus tang. if you smoke or drink loads of coffee etc. you won't taste or smell a bloody thing drinking this. be warned. its very subtle and will appeal to super tasters a lot. arrival: gentle, warming, fizzes like cheap sweets before settling down in to a subtly fruity wave. its got wood. but its nice wood. not the sort of stuff to call the police over. a wonderfully sherbert tang. it made me suck my chops and go 'oooh that's got something going on there lovely!'. if you want an approximation of this, check Nicol Anderson - Glenmorangie - Bailie Nicol Jarvie Blend of Old Scotch Whisky. Gog's expression is exact. to a tee. I always find when drinking cheap blended whisky that I am looking for a nice flavour experience and dreading the inevitible horrible grain blast that ruins it. I didn't get that with this at all. its extremely subtle and pleasant - you need to stick with it and make sure your gob is clean before to avoid 'off notes'! seriously, if you've had any oil or vinegar or herbs beforehand, this will just make a mess in your mouth! ye be warned! I loved this blend. its a welcome change from sherried fertilizer bombs. hits the front of the tongue the most prominently. finish: definite floral/speyside that tails off to a truly pleasant syrup aftertaste. you can still taste the grain in this. it IS cheap blended whisky. so yeah. but there simply isn't anywhere near as much as there is in other blends at this price point - other blends taste like half decent young spirit married to horrible harsh grain brew. this tastes like good young spirit married to either a very tender grain or very small quantities of it. I can't tell not being an expert. verdict: if you like speyside and are fookin sick and tired of sherried cough syrup or the bloody awful debased 'former greats' like teacher's, the malt blast of grouse etc this is a lovely blend that in a very understated way, is very pleasing sipping. the only real competitor at this price point (and it isnt really, cos its usually 6-7 quid more expensive) is Johnny Walker Black Label. which is much more muscular and borders, at times, on a bit of a mess. despite tasting and smelling rather pleasant. I love drams like the Bailie with this floral, light, citrusy, understated, less 'you have no taste so here's everything we think you think you'd like' stuff myself. best enjoyed in front of a fire or a stove with wood smoke and wet dog appertif. and nowhere near your last meal. alternatively, be like ivan and go find some snow. set up your deck chair and plonk your bottle of Bailie in a chunk of scenery until ice cold. and enjoy. TOTALLY IGNORANT BLEND MARK 88. its really that nice. if you enjoyed those sherbert things that came in cardboard tubes as a kid and you coincidentally (and long sufferingly these days sheesh) enjoy non-sherried shyte whisky, and aren't a massive 'single malt or bugger off' snob, then I suggest you buy some. the 'grain' is bearable. very very bearable. buy some. now. the worst 'single malt' whisky I ever tasted, glenmorangie lasanta, is approx 2.2x more expensive than this. which makes no sense. so buy buy buy. bye bye!

I forgot I had six bottles of BNJ stashed away behind a pile of cheap blend whiskies (half-hearted prepper) as I just categorised them with all these other blends. Just pulled them out now and will certainly crack open one of them but am wondering if they'd have any decent value at all at the auction houses these days and would they be worth putting them out there even?

Entertaining as usual, Was the coffin in the hearse when you crashed it? If so bet you had more than one BNJ. I like you are not too keen on Bowmore, but I was at a tasting at DT Huntly and tasted the Tempest- bought 2 bottles, either i was drunk or the whisky made an impact on me as I never normally buy 2 bottles the same at the same time as i am a grippy Aberdonian loon ;-))

Hi Ralfy, I predict your reviews become legendary! Great stuff.
Quick question for you: I recently read a review of BNJ at another site and they spoke of it as a sweeter blend. However, seeing this review it doesn't seem so. Being Norwegian-blooded, I rather fancy anything sweet-tasting (a curse!). What would you recommend as some of the sweeter blended scotches? I'd love to taste a sweet, smokey finish (if I was aiming for perfection.)

  • @jagsingh5652

Hi Ralfy. Seen a bottle of BNJ being sold for £50. Have only seen and read very good reviews of this so am tempted but then I am thinking £50 is a lot of money for a blend given that I could get a whisky like Ardbeg 10 for less. Would you, or anyone who is reading this that has tried BNJ pay £50 for a bottle?

    • @thewhiskybothy
      @thewhiskybothy  7 лет назад

. . . it's a good bitter blend, but £50 is double what it sold for when retailed. Good luck with your decision.
