  • Should your carry gun have a compensator? Gun Talk's Ryan Gresham and Kevin "KJ" Jarnagin discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages to doing so, the new pistols coming from the factory with a compensator - like the Springfield Armory Hellcat RDP and the SIG P365XL Spectre Comp, aftermarket comps, and holsters for a comped gun. This Gun Talk Nation is brought to you by Timney Triggers, Savage Arms, Hodgdon Powder Company, and Smith & Wesson.

"if youre willing to take the chance for the improvements..." Im not. Also theres added wear, and heat, two things that could add distortion

Gun writer's, GunTubers are about chasing gear because it's your job and the manufacturers are always pushing gear at you. In reality nothing ever gets a negative review because GunTuber's don't want to stop the free stuff coming their way.

It would be nice to see a video of multiple guns compared. Hellcat RDP with and without comp, 365 Spectre comp, the aftermarket Faxon comp on a Glock43X and a ported barrel Shield plus or 365SAS with slow motion video and a MantisX10 data.

You missed one aspect of how a comp works. It’s not just directing the gasses up. It’s also taking the forward energy of the gasses slamming into the wall of the comp port. And directing some of that energy into a forward and down energy in the gun.
And using one in a competition takes you up a class. And most people aren’t willing to step up to the next class.

i disagree that you giving a top level competitor a hipoint will still allow them to do better, unless they are really good at throwing

No need, their answer is always that a prosecutor will twist whatever you did and you’ll get life in prison. I’m starting to question their ability if doing anything will automatically land their clients in prison forever.

Various companies have offered ported guns on production pistols and revolvers for at least 30 years.

Last I heard, muzzle brakes on defensive guns was a no-no simply for the massive concussion in doors factor, and compensators are just sideways muzzle brakes. Odds are, if you have to use your gun defensively it's going to be inside, and gunfire inside is loud enough without the compensator. I don't need the blast to blow my brain out through my ears if I have to get into a gun fight.

Kind of a stupid comment. Youre shooting a firearm… indoors… its going to be loud af no matter what you do unless its a 22 with a suppressor using subsonic ammo. The last thing your will be concerned about is noise. What you will see is the problem, hopefully your pistol sight on said problem, and the slide moving and the problem no longer being the problem. I bet the blast will almost be inaudible. Last I heard from all the people who have actually used a gun to kill people inside and outside structures.

glock used to sell comped magnaported in the 90's..... and its still a bad idea for a carry gun.... why? imagen having to draw and fire at the holster, close to your body... where is that blast going?... right in your face...
