At This Buffet Restaurant, You Pay As You Wish

  • Since 1986, Annalakshmi in Singapore has been serving pay-as-you-wish meals to people based on the Hindu philosophy of 'Atithi Devo Bhava" (guest is God), so that no one will be turned away just because they could not afford a meal. Using recipes passed down orally by grandmothers and mothers from the first generation of volunteers, the restaurant has seen close to 700 recipes originating from different parts of India! For some, it may just be a buffet spread but for many of the regulars, it is a familiar taste of home.

      Dessie Stone lot of times I think it has to do with social pressure and the feeling of responsibility and community. I bet something like this would work much better in a small close nit community where everyone knows everyone. I know a similar thing kinda happens where I’m from. There are a few restoraunts which wave your bill because it’s cash only and you only have your card. It would be super easy to just not ever pay, but you know the people and you feel bad about it, so you enevitably pay the bill when you have the money and give them a signed card for the hassle.
      Home town dynamics can be a wonderful thing.

      Yeah it is his business because if people do not pay who is losing out him. But if some people over pay them I guess it evens our balance. But if he is doing this for his religion and wants people to pay as much as they want then this is perfect because then in the eyes of his religion who is he to question how much ppl give it’s their offering of donation.

    As a Hindu Indian, single and vegetarian, I was struggling in Singapore when it came to food. I was in tears when I found this place and had a truly satisfying meal. I was there whenever work permitted me during my 4 years of stay there. Almost twice or thrice a week. Please accept my heartfelt thanks. This place deserves an exclusive award for the concept and for the food quality. There should be many many more such loving spaces in this world. So, i am half Chinese half Nepalese and i wasn't "smart" enough to study in Chinese government school so i moved to nepal as you would expect i could only spend $3 on meals everyday so i would skip meal sometimes i used to go at this cheap restaurant where i used to order only half the dish and pay half the price the owner noticed this and i was a regular customer so one day he decides to give me a full meal and a half meal and says i only need to pay for 1/2 meal and it wasn't necessary to pay for the full meal and this continued for a month and i finally got a job so i went to the restaurant to pay for all the meals i hadn't paid for but unfortunately the restaurant was bought. They went bankrupt because they would do the same for other college and highschool students that couldn't afford to have a full stomach. I wish i could one day meet the owner and give him a hug 😥.

    Fun fact: Thousands of Hindu temples in India provide free food to thousands of people everyday regardless of religion. They won't charge you a single dime. If you enter the temple, pray and come out without eating food, it's considered inauspicious. Cuz the food made in temple for the devotees is blessed by God. So the devotees always have the delicious food. This makes me feel proud of my Hindu culture.

      Tbh one of the main reasons why such a concept can work in singapore is because there is a very low chance youll find homeless people nowadays.. plus singapore is a small country so that makes it even more unlikely to have homeless people visit the restaurant.

    • @Nevermore-xf2sy

      Why not? If I were to do this in either city, I would make it a niche restaurant. Then I'd make sure the people understand we run on donations and in return we donate half the proceeds. I would also try to offer something extra you don't normally get a restaurant. Finally add quality ingredients and quality customer service. Want and example? How about a local food only restaurant where you get locally grown and locally caught food. Add something extra like being able to dine with an elderly person from a retirement home. Think "rent a grandparent" type situation but for donation only. Can even make the elderly the recipients of half the proceeds. Or how about a virtual reality restaurant where, as you eat, you go on a guided vr tour of some place historical. In either situation people would want to donate because they would want to come back and they know their donations are going to something positive. That's how you make this business model work.

    I had two tutors in childhood who were like this. They never asked for fees and never told how much they wanted for their fee. Whenever we asked them, they replied "give whatever you want". So all of us students together decided to give an average tution fee that tutors used to charge in our city. There were however some shameless guys who have studied for years but never paid a penny.
    There is also a milkman in my grandmothers city, who provides milk everyday but never asks for money. He does have a price for his milk and service but he never asks you to pay. There is one shameless woman who is taking milk from him since last 7 years but has not paid for it just because he doesn't ask her to pay. And she tells everybody about it proudly thinking that everybody will praise her for being a smart woman. She doesn't realize that everybody thinks her as a stingy woman.

    • @learnprogramming123
      @learnprogramming123 5 лет назад +49

      @Sabah Zarid India and more or less the entire Indian subcontinent is a very socialist society so this is not something very rare. There are people who even buy food from restaurants everyday in order to distribute it to people free of cost. There are many who cook food everyday to distribute it to people for free. There are temples of both Hindus and Sikhs which feed millions everday for free. Steve Jobs used to eat in one such temple during his days of poverty.
      But what I was emphasizing in my comment was the other people, who abuse the generosity of good people.

Most of them are not so expensive but some key ingredients like Kashmiri Kesar range in 10s of thousands of dollars a kilo. Also you need a lot of expertise to know how to use those spices. Indians ourselves are not able to cook stuff perfectly and the only people who can pull it off are professionals or elders who have a lotta experience. Anyways the price of Indian herbs and spices multiplies in other countries for some reason.
