  • Kangaroo Bluff Battery is an historic site located in Bellerive, on Hobart's eastern shore (Tasmania, Australia). It is a short 15 minute (approximately) drive from the CBD.
Construction of the Kangaroo Bluff Battery was completed in 1884. The need for the battery was a result of the poor state of other batteries (located in Battery Point) and the presence of Russian warships in the Derwent River in 1873. Kangaroo Bluff Battery complemented the Alexander Battery (located in Sandy Bay). Alexander Battery was constructed during the same time frame.
Kangaroo Bluff battery operated into the early 1920s. The guns were then considered obsolete and buried. In the 1970s, the Kangaroo Bluff site was designated of historical significance. The two primary cannons were then unearthed and put on display.
References for the weights of the two main cannon indicate they were of 12.5 ton or 14 ton (sometimes using metric ton (tonne) and sometimes using imperial ton).
    There were four gun emplacements:
    - 2x Armstrong 8 inch cannon (numbered guns 2 and 3 in the battery)
    - 2x Nordenfelt 6 Pounders (numbered guns 1 and 4 in the battery)
    - 2x Nordenfelt machine guns (located to protect the main gate of the battery)
