Way to go man! This is exactly the reason why I decided to stay in the Philippines after graduating college in California. I get the same exact questions of why stay when everyone's leaving. Who else is gonna be the gamechanger? How do we make an impact in our country when we leave it for other countries? Awesome talk.

My aunt is a nurse in the UK. She admitted that if only workers in the Philippines are paid more, she would’ve stayed here. She could’ve been motivated to work and gain a fair salary in order to feed her family. But she couldn’t. Everytime she visits the Philippines and comes back in the UK, she would always miss her home country. Circumstances would be much better in the Philippines if families gain a fair or higher amount of salary in order to feed or provide themselves.
This is why the youth should change their perspective. And not have a close mind into just living abroad. They should live not just to survive, but in order to innovate, create, and contribute to their home country. Because sadly, more and more young people today are indifferent when it comes to contributing their country.
The Filipino youth today only study in the Philippines in order to live and work abroad once they become adults. In which, this should change.

We may basically have an inferiority complex due to other countries being so modern and advanced compared to PI. That's why they have the thinking of JUST Google Philippines. Sigh. Filipinos don't know just how FUN it really is in PI as well. How beautiful and natural with the trees and mountains instead of concrete and buildings. The Philippine values, the HAPPY predisposition we all have despite the hardships, the singing :) I may be in another country right now, but I will go home someday to my homeland, and be able to contribute as well and help out however way I can.

Thank you for your insight. Can one imagine if we had a critical mass of the likes of Alex De Leon? The Philippines would be an awesome country with beautiful 7,100 islands and persevering, humble, happy, successful, loving, creative, inventive, kind and JUST people. We will throw away the other meaning of JUST that is negative the word JUST that Alex is talking about. It belongs NOT in the mind of the Filipino people, especially the young generation. Celebrate the successes of others.

Interesting view. I came back from the USA to the Philippines and maybe I don't get the subtle jabs of why come back. I hang out with mostly expats and everyone has a positive view of this beautiful country. I learned something new.

Interestingly, I also have plans of going to the States to study, and then coming back here in the Philippines to share what I learned there. Because I do believe that our country can be so much more than "just Philippines" if its people work hard to uplift it and not to keep dragging it down by being intimidated of other countries.
Good talk, by the way! 😊 Oh, and the speaker's too cute for my life hahaha! 😂

I beg to differ...There is"enough" of this mentality...the reality is there is not enough of the right high paying jobs to sustain it. Eventually the reality of economics do kick-in...altruistic and nationalistic behavior is best supported when all basic needs are met sufficiently.
Make no mistake on the glaring fact that Filipinos born or working in a foreign land had always had a positive impact for the Philippines for many generations now. You can thank its government for wasting that capital and why it never translated to local progress.
Why do you think in reality the Philippine GDP is affected in great part by this so called "remittance" coming from all parts of the world?
And as much as Google would like to push the belief that they are doing this as a business with a heart...NO...there is no better investment in power than laying the core foundation to better information sources...information leads to control...control IS power...fortunately...most elitist and middle ground foreigners do make the mistake in assuming a few of the Filipino "hidden" core value with regards to work and service...and that value has served Filipinos since organized community structures have been developed.

Hi - thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. If you listen to the content of my presentation, I'm not making any commentary about why people decide to leave the Philippines. There are economic realities that you mentioned which are very fair. All I did was share my personal experience of coming back home and my disappointment with how people reacted. It shouldn't be 'sayang' to move home and there shouldn't be a distinction between Google and Google Philippines. Those are unassailable truths, in my opinion.
Finally, I disagree entirely with your last statement. My coworkers put their heart and soul into rolling out tools like Google Person Finder after Yolanda happened. It was one of the largest natural disasters in history and at one point in time, there were more than 100,000 records in Person Finder. To state the obvious, Person Finder is not monetized in any way so there is no financial incentive for it to even exist. By assuming that a team of fellow Pinoys would only work on a project like this in order for 'control' and 'power' is exactly the kind of negative crab mentality that needs to change in our country.
