Hi Chris. I’m THOROUGHLY enjoying your vlogs, even though we shan’t ever be in the position to build another boat. You are going to be such a help to other folks! 😀 It’s lovely seeing NB? Slowly coming to life…….. she will give you, and yours SO much pleasure . Quite agree about loo choice, a kind reversal to early days of ‘bucket and chuck it!’ 😆. ( get at least 2 spades, always have a spare!!!😉) Glad you did put the ballast in, makes her more yours…… have a great holiday. See you next year and you’ll soon be on the water 👍🌟👏👏🎄 joan
Hi Joan. Ah yes. The ? About the name. I have a thought, but I’ve still got some time before the sign writer puts the paint on the side. Still in dither and delay about the toilet. Doing more research which is giving me clarity. I’ll post my decision in the New Year. Boat bonding is great. The more I do, the more I understand. I do hope DIY boaters learn from these vlogs as I don’t think there has been an intimate view from a fit out professional point of view. I know others have covered it as DIYers and doing a great job, but, as I know, ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’. Recognise the Foxy Fellas and Captain Gary have vlogged their journey too. There will be a vlog next week. Managed to squeeze content about spay foam insulation to keep momentum going. Have a great Christmas. Thanks for your kind words. Spades at the ready!👍
Underfloor insulation is somethig I had thought about many times, but never seen on a narrowboat build video. To me, it just makes sense. Have a good holiday!
Thanks Peter. It does make sense doesn’t it. Like you I’ve wondered why it isn’t talked about more. Perhaps like cars, in a few years, it’ll soon be the normal in fit out or maybe it is! No, don’t think so. Merry Christmas.
Great explanation of the 'why and how' of all the work, Chris. Your boat looks a lot different with the floor down. Have a good Christmas and see you in the next video.
Thanks for the comment. The ‘why’ is important to me and the ‘how’ makes it happen. The boat is transformed with a floor isn’t it. More transformation next week. Merry Christmas and thanks for watching.
Glad to see your enjoying your bonding. It was great to see your video of our boats crossing over We have just spent our second week on NBHG and I can say it has been really good, few niggles, but Mark will sort them in the new year. Condensation has not been an issue at all and honestly it is warm and toasty. We have settled nicely into our marina and they opened up the canal again so we have had our maiden voyage. Looking forward to more of your videos, it's great to see your boat being fitted out, as you know we missed most of HG's because of covid. Have a good Christmas Chris...........
Hi Shaun. It was great to meet up with you on launch day, albeit for the briefest of moments as the car issues took priority. Pleased you’re happy with your boat; always nice to meet someone whose NB was build just before your own. Well have to catch up sometime soon. Perhaps Crick might be good if you’re going? Have a great Christmas and New Year.
I'm learning every time I go to visit. The bonding process allows me to understand. Life on the boat will be another learning curve. Thanks for watching.
Looking very good Chris. The attention to detail with elements of the boat that no-one will see is incredible. This boat is going to be very special... Have a great Christmas Chris and satay safe!
It’s the detail that creates the foundation. It’s why I believe the boat will look just as good in a few decades time. It’ll need looking after, but then, if it’s worth doing right, it’ll need the correct amount of care. I’m sure the boat will be special. Thanks for watching. Merry Christmas.
Great vlog Chris so interesting. Can't wait for the next episode the whole family are now strangely addicted ! Have a wonderful Christmas and break. Regards Sparky.
Strangely addicted! Addicted, I get…….strangely…….That’s a bit strong. How did you find out about the channel? Regardless, thanks for watching, have a great Christmas. Insulation next week. Who’d have thought you would strangely addicted to watching me talk boats and rubbish on the tube 😀👍
Thank you for sharing your journey Chris. Looking forward to the next instalment, but in the meantime, have a great Christmas and see you again in the new year.
Thanks for watching and support about the style. It’s a bit different perhaps, and for some, takes time to adjust to. My story is about my ‘Why’. I hope to continue to entertain but next Ep 13 is about batteries, so less entertaining and more about why I have chosen the batteries I hope to. Have a great New Year. Thanks for your support.
Love seeing narrow boats being fitted out, both by professionals like yours to DIYers and yours looks amazing. The attention to detail is great. Looking forward to seeing more and hope you get more involved as works progresses as im sure you will benefit from it. So all the best for Christmas and the new year Chris.
Thanks Nigel. I believe the process will be fascinating and can’t wait for the launch. Meanwhile, there’s lots to do and I’ll get involved as much as possible. However, I’m afraid all the cabinet making, I’ll be there just to film. They won’t let me anywhere near any wood making after seeing my own work from a previous episode. You’re right, the attention to detail is great and will become more evident as time goes on. Have a great Christmas.
Hi Chris. Amazing how much different the boat looks with the battening, insulation and the flooring down. Some great "inside information too on the processes to reduce condensation - simple but so clever at the same time. Impressed too with the precision of the fitment so far, and how it all has to be done according to the plan or the "final bits" won't fit properly - must be a challenge on something this size. Looking forward to the next stages, and finding out why the battens get taped ! Thanks again for a fascinating video. Have a terrific Christmas and our best wishes for 2022. George and Trish - CaravanningMacs.
Thanks George and Trish. The boat does look different and have managed to squeeze in another vlog with spray foam for next week. I managed to create something to keep momentum going with a few tips for those wanting to insulate using spray foam. I’m learning lots and doing boat bonding was always going to be a good thing. Have a great Christmas and New Year. Thanks for watching.
Great vlog Chris boat looking good like the fact all the battening is screwed and not glued like a lot you see lately on you tube have a good Christmas and looking forward to more progress in the new year
Thank you Stephen. I must admit, I’m impressed by that myself. I’m sure that’ll not be the only thing that impresses me during the build. The roof bows is another good example. Merry Christmas.
Thanks Jackie. I think it’s a great company with some talented people working there. It’s the culture that shines through. Quality work and the very best of standards are expected from themselves. Happy Christmas.
I’m so Happy for ya it’s really coming along. looking like it’s going to happen for ya new home for the new year Merry Christmas Chris I really enjoy your vlogs 🥰🎁🥰Lots of love from Louisiana ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🎄🎄🎄
Thank you Susan. It’s looking great after only 2 weeks. I’m pleased you enjoy the vlogs. Next year can’t come quick enough. May is a great time, should all go to plan. Thanks for watching in Louisiana. Appreciate it. Happy Christmas.
Hi, gorgeous boat and lovely to see so much attention to detail, question if I may, are all the softwood I batterns treated? It would seem like a missed opportunity if not! Thanks simon
What a difference now the floor is down. I can’t think of anyone else who I’ve seen putting ballast bricks in who have put roofing felt underneath, I expect the boat yard said to do that, others have spread tile spacers under them. I’ve seen comments about this very thing but you have explained the condensation/air flow very well and it seems like a good idea to me, maybe others will now do the same. Have you mentioned you will be having spray foam insulation? I can’t remember, it could be the reason you taped up the batons. Anyway, have a merry Christmas Chris, stay safe and look forward to the next vlog.
You’re all over it Bob. The bitumen and roof felt was put down by the The Fit Out Pontoon prior to me laying the bricks for ballast. Maybe other builders may consider the roof bows in due course. It isn’t known if any other fit out or boat builder does that as standard. The tape will be explained next week but you’ve got the idea. Never considered it I’ve seen other people cut away foam but that too makes sense when it’s explained. Happy Christmas.
Really interesting, your going into depth about control of condensation, even for someone with no interest in owning such a boat.. Good to hear about the bitumen and roofing felt under the bricks and the thought given to the circulation of air. I’m sure this video will be of especial interest to those coming along behind you in that they’ll know what questions to ask and what to look for. It’s really starting to look good, Chris. I can see that Mark has high professional standards just from the way they keep their chisels and the care they take in sharpening them. That’s why it’s interesting to see the inclusion of clips of the work being done and little details that some might consider trivial. Another excellent video, Chris. I hope there’s one next week to help us survive the Christmas equivalent of water boarding. Finally, what was the purpose of the Sellotape you were laying down the vertical battens?
Thanks Martin. It’s the detail that tells the story, much the same as the detail that I’m sure will be put into the boat. My motivation was to assist others in making their boat with some ideas from a professional fit out company. I’ve held some content for next week to keep momentum. The taping of the batons will be revealed then. The result saves an enormous amount of time if you were doing a DIY fit out. Happy Christmas.
@@chrismears-inslowtime Thanks Chris. So you’re going to keep me guessing about the tape for a whole week? Well, at least I know there’s a video next week - the Sermon from the Boat - that’s something to help me survive all the Christmas nonsense. Very best wishes for Xmas, 2022 and your future as a narrowboat pilot.
Hi Chris. Thank you for sharing your vlogs. They are a massive help to us as we are currently in the process of fitting out our nb. Your depth of information, content and your thought process is fantastic!! May I just ask about the holes drilled out into the ceiling steel struts. Do they have to be a particular size? Keep on vlogging please. Best wishes with your build. Lee & Ali.
Thanks for watching Lee and Ali. I suppose, as I didn’t actually do it, the holes are big enough to put the nozzle of a spray foam gun to force the foam in. I think it’s a bit of trial and error. If I were doing it, I’ll put as many holes in the first 2-3 to work out if the foam is getting through as needed. Once happy, just the one at either end. Tips like insulating the roof bows is priceless. Things coming up, engine size and reason this Tuesday. Electrical system, very near future. Had a meeting last Thursday. So when that kit is bought, I’ll align the vlog. Toilet, again shortly. Lots of background activity along with the actual fit out. Lights will be a good one too. I hope you’re in the right point of your fit out to take advantage. Good luck. Hope to meet you floating about.
Hi Chris, thank you so much for taking the time to explain and reply to us , very much appreciated. We had not seen that done before but made a lot of sense . Looking forward to your essential vlogs in the future, for us anyway. Keep it going.Yes it would be great to see you out and about on the cut one day! Lee & Ali.
Looks good. The insulation below the floor boards is a great idea that's where most of the cold damp air will come from. Are you going to insulate the ceiling as well? It seems with that big metal roof you will have a lot of heat pushing down into the boat without it. It will also keep the heat from escaping on cold nights. We have an additional room that has open beam ceilings that looks great, but on hot days the heat just pushes through it and on cold days all the heat escapes, this room is about 10-15 degrees (f) different than the rest of the house.
Thanks Paul. More about insulation next week. I’ve saved content to keep momentum going. This time next year I’ll no doubt be stating how warm the boat is without much heating. Merry Christmas.
Your boat is looking great. Thanks for explaining things. On the ballast, do all narrow boats have ballast covering the entire lower area of the boat, or does it depends? Happy Christmas.
I think it depends on the interior fit out. I don’t think mine is too tech. The Fit Out Pontoon is a bespoke build. There are boats that truly bespoke with all different requirements and designs. I think mine is more traditional in my needs. The front bay and the end two at the back are free from ballast. It can be added later for trimming should it need it. Some boats have a ‘Range’ cooker which can take the need for ballast out of that area of the boat. Thanks for watching. Have a great Christmas.
adding the ballast, taping the batons prior to spray foaming, do you get a little discount on the price or does the boat get finished quicker or is it just so you can say you did your bit to help? Merry Christmas to you Chris.
I just want to do some bonding and understanding about how it all fits together. If it goes wrong, at least I’ll have a little knowledge of what’s gone on and how it could be put together again. I don’t get a discount, I have saved two days in time so I hope it’ll be finished 2 days quicker. I know it doesn’t work that way. Spray foam next week. Merry Christmas.
I’m loving watching this come together Chris. A question I keep asking, is cost. So maybe a post Boxing Day filler and breakdown from startex to endex? Merry Christmas mate.
Make you hair curl Jack. I’ve considered going through the cost. I know people will be interested and I will, in due course, go through the big ticket items. I’ll relate it houses that people can identify with. Merry Christmas too Jack.

I think the spray foam happened shortly after (I did video it) and the under floor insulation was something I'm so pleased I got. The floor is cold enough as it is. I hate to think what it would have been like had it not been laid.
You certainly know how to create emotion in a vlog, Chris. The London segment along with the music was up there mate.
