      When people state 'it's obvious', it's only obvious when you know about it and then you think, how come I didn't think about it. Experience allows common sense and my hope is others will have an easier journey if they are doing a DIY fit out. Also, in the comments last week, there were people who realised what the masking tape was for. It's out there, but not well known. Batteries next week. Have that 9v battery ready to suck on to keep yourself awake!

    I have been watching your build from the beginning Chris and its coming along very nicely. As I have said to other Narrowboat vloggers, I have never owned a boat and only stepped foot on one recently for about 5 minutes, so to see how one is build from the plates up is interesting. I think it has an effect on The Fit Out Pontoon too. While I believe their work is outstanding, to have their work shown on film can present a risk. I do like to keep on top of the project in an understanding way, but I’m mindful of presenting myself as being overly difficult for them. Fine lines in getting the best content for me but not being in the way. Thanks for watching and your support.

    Another great informative vlog Chris. I have watched numerous vlogs where boaters have had their boats spray foamed then spent weeks cursing and swearing chipping it back off the batons with scrapers and multi tools. Then go round the boat with expanding foam where it's been damaged.

    Hi Chris. Another excellent video for all, whether you've got a boat, are thinking of getting one, are having one built or are just interested and curious like us ! We also now see how taping up the battens is useful - one of those steps that seems ingenious but is really simple when you see why it's done. More great progress Chris and somehow the boat instantly seemed "warmer" with the spray foam done as we watched - not sure if it actually was ? Thanks again for another really enjoyable and informative vlog. Looking forward to more. Cheers and Happy New Year. George and Trish - CaravanningMacs

  • @martinrubenstein7943
    @martinrubenstein7943 3 года назад

    Now I understand why you were taping up last week. That foam is horrible stuff to work with, no matter how careful you are, there’s always a horrible sticky mess to deal with afterwards,. The foam man deserves a king’s ransom for doing that job. I can well imagine it taking days to remove the stuff off battens - and making a real mess of the battens in the process - when the masking process is less than perfect. It’s really satisfying to watch all the stages of the build. Another brilliant video, Chris. Just looking at that foam makes you feel warm, but I get what you kept saying about patching up any missed areas, nooks or crannies: the water vapour in the air will seek out the cold spots like bees finding nectar and will pool and sit there. And, like when the nectar’s concentrated in one tiny area,, with the bees all fighting to get at it, any cold-bridge spots would cause you big problems with corrosion and wood rot. It’s the 7 Ps again!

    • @chrismears-inslowtime
      @chrismears-inslowtime  3 года назад

      Thanks Martin. Mentioned the Ps in a previous comment today. But it's absolutely correct. More so in this case where if you miss something like condensation and not filling the gaps with foam, will have a horrendous effect. As you know, never straight away, but in years to come when the damage is much worse. Foam fella was great. Have a great New Year.

    Following on from when the floor went down, you spoke of the air flow between the floor beam and sidewall/hull of the boat. If this area is not insulated, could this be an area that moisture and condensation could build up in? I also noticed the gap between the upper horizontal wall batten and the ceiling batten. Will this be foam insulated by the fitout pontoon before boarding commences? Nice to see progress being made Chris.

      Thanks for the comment. Area between sidewall/hull allowing airflow. Good question. I don’t know. Will ask. However what I do know is when the side wall boarding goes up and the main floor is fitted, there is no room or gaps. Mark prides himself on that. 1mm is too big a gap. I assume, if air can’t get there, no, but…….

      Hi Lee and Ali. I’m pleased the videos are of some use. I’ve looked at this weeks video where I discuss briefly the importance of design and battening out the boat and how it can save time and I think money. To answer your question. There are batons all around the side hatch as when that was boarded on the wall, it gave Dom the freedom to put screws where needed. And it was easy to judge. I think Ep 17 could be of use. If you want some hot gen, let me know and I’ll ask the lads. Baton out before spray foam. It’s easier. Also double tape the batons before hand. The foam protects the wood form rotting as well.

      @@leealibuildingtheblackswan2098 I think if you watch the videos closely and not pay attention to me waffling on, you can see how the boat is battened. I have two hatches. One at the dinette and one in the office. Both are battened the same with wood all around to enable the boards to be glued around the hatch and screwed around the outside of the boards. Try not to listen to me…..well do so but watch what is behind me. Believe or not, some of the time it is filmed with the background in mind to assist DIY fit outs. I needed to really watch my own videos to offer an answer. It’s a bit bad really but, I’d rather offer a more correct and honest answer. Just to film what is useful doesn’t make good general viewing. I’m not engaging enough I’m told. Their right to a certain extent but filming the fit out was to assist others in their homework.
