- Well, here's quite an interesting & somewhat cool laptop I own. What we have here is an HP Pavilion N5170, running the infamous Windows ME.
There are A LOT of strong feelings about Windows ME. Most people call it Mistake Edition, Major Embarrassment, etc. As it has the reputation of being the WORST OS made by Microsoft. Both in regards of hardware problems (as Windows ME is VERY picky when it coms to hardware), and also making no sense to many.
But in reality, Windows ME did bring some new features that OS'es before didn't have. Like System Restore, Movie Maker, the availability to run ScanDisk within Windows, etc. And also, Windows ME CAN run smooth on some machines. And I can vouch for this. As this laptop runs it fairly smooth. And also my Dell Dimension L800R PC (from my childhood) has ran Windows ME since the very beginning. And it has NEVER given me an ounce of trouble ONCE. Throughout my time using that computer growing up lol.
But anywho, moving on. So HOW did I get this laptop? Well, this was yet another eBay purchase I decided to make back in January of 2021. However, this was a RANDOM purchase. That I did NOT intend on making. But when I saw the listing for it......$60 (and $15 shipping), parts only, but it came with ALL of the original software & books for it. So it was definitely a shot in the dark/a gamble. Worse comes to worst, it actually didn't work & I wasted about $80. But I was optimistic, and bought it anyway lol.
And the day I got it in the mail, I spent not even 10 minutes working on it. And it started working! All it needed, was just a few power cycles! And it was up & running. So, definitely quite a score in my book. A decent Windows 9x laptop (that was in good shape), came with all the original books & software, for under $100. I was definitely happy & impressed. Not that this laptop is anything to write home about, of course. But still a cool piece of history to own. And again, this laptop runs Windows ME pretty flawlessly actually.
