AS soon as I saw how loose those incoming tails were... i mean even as a DIYer (i dont do it any more though) i know what contact resistance is and that stuff should be done up TIGHT to prevent it being an issue.

While it would be a good aspiration to be able to link an electrical installation (through the CU) to an electrician, there are a huge number of issues around how it could be set up and maintained (let alone what happened if it was found an electrician was selling off CU's, etc).
You just have to look into the difficulties that have been exposed in cladding scandal (even being able to find the companies who built the blocks of flats has been problematic)

Couple things, I think its wonderful that you are helping the lady. I would love to see some more volunteer work for people in need, just even one time a quarter would be great. Basically help use the RUclips revenue to help those less fortunate. That goes go a long way and says a lot about your company, to be able to donate your time and small amounts of supplies or even all of them. Giving back to the community is a big thing in my book. Pay it forward! 👍😎 I know it takes time out of your paying schedule, but maybe working with some of the vendors or wholesalers you would be able to get free or reduced cost items you would use on the project and give them some PR as well for the donations.

Agree in some ways with your comment about only allowing qualified people to buy boards but then you are at the mercy of the electrician. I had an extension built. The builders electrician came to me and said I would have to get a new board because he couldnt source the mcbs for my board anymore. My board is a crabtree starbreaker which was less than a year old. I said no. Went down to screwfix and bought the mcbs over the counter and knocked it off the builders bill. Board is now 15 years old and I can still get the mcbs and I'm still finding the mistakes the builders electrician made. I'm a chartered electrical engineer and even though I can design electrical disribution systems I can't install one in my own house. Bearing in mind I started doing domestic electric in the mid 80s. I've had numerous cases over the years where I've spec'd something for a trade defined the manufacturer, parts and equipment to use and come installation the trade has done something different and can't give me a good reason why. So if I wanted a consumer unit I would much prefer to buy it myself to ensure that I got the installation I wanted.
@@adamsharp201 I think really my point is that if only Electricians can buy boards you are at the mercy of what the electrician buys. What I generally find happens with a lot of trades is that they quote for the most expensive and when they get the job they buy the cheapest. Yes I realise that master Bundy and his apprentice, whatever his name is, arn't like that, they do appear to do a good job, but its very difficult to get good trades and most are out to do the bare minimum. Personnelly I prefer to buy what I want then get the trade to fit it, but I am also willing to take advice. If I spec something I would expect the tradesman to come up with a good reason why we couldnt go down that route, not to say things like the board is obsolete we cant get the MCBs we will have to fit a new board when the board is less than a year old.
I have the same issue, I'm not a sparky but a electronics engineer working on systems that generate 150KV from three phase supplies. As an engineer I follow the building regs if I do electrical work and as money isn't the defining motivator for doing the job but wanting to make sure it's done correctly, having some rule that says only a electrician in the trade can buy consumer units or RCBOs doesn't seem at all fair in my particular case. It's not like all electricians do a first class job as I've seen first hand! Having said that Nick does do some excellent work and would hire him without hesitation. Just need to hire a little old lady fancy dress costume for some free work. 😁

Regards to serial numbers.....mixed thoughts, yes it would help stop cowboys instorling and doing dangerous fittings!
But as you both say there's a few out there that work above the regs and do fantastic work.
I'm not 18th edition, but I work on generators so still have to work, test and inspect our equipment all time......
Yes IV done work at home, it got my sparky in to sign off and he's bollocked me for going ott all time....

Restricting purchase would be impossible to police as you would just end up with knock off or re-used old kit. Just you boys keep doing a good job and making the customers smile. There are so many things you cant control and will never be able to. Just look at what is happening in the world today says it all.

Said many a time, it needs to go ELECTRASAFE (like GASSAFE) route where all electrical works carried out by a register electrician. Then customer pays with confidence. Builders will get round it no doubt but someone number will be assigned to it

never understood how much of a psychopath you need to be, to feel no guilt while LYING to a customer for no reason just to take their money, they feel NO shame in doing a botch job, and they carry on grinding through the entire job without any sense of dread that they don't know what they're doing. If there's ever a reason for regs to exist, it's those kind of people.
And unlike a real electrician they've connected up a new board to a load of unsatisfactory wiring. Obvs no testing etc before restoring power.
I agree, but these people clearly don't follow the regs, so they may as well not exist.
@@moskaski I think a wide publicity campaign is needed so people are aware of Part P - and oeople know they should demand certification for all work (even non notifiable still has to be inspected, tested and certified). Whatever a builder, kitchen fitter, DIY friend etc says about their competence, teach people not to pay for work till a certificate is issued, that they can verify with a phone call. The certificates need a serial number, as a legal document.
@@tobysherring1369 as a practicing worker, i hate all the regs but then I enter houses where these horrors are becoming more and more common so if spending 5 mins on a stupid piece of paper keeps the house next door from burning down, sign me up.
Well done for offering your services for free. Of course if the DNO equipment is unsafe, you should contact the DNO and leave a warning notice. However, the DNOs equipment does not come under 7671 and as such should not be included in the EICR.

Hi Nick, As a competent electrical DIYer I agree only qualified Electricians should be able to buy Consumer Units, I have rewired almost all of my house myself but I had to contact my DNO to get an old 6mm earth changed out for a PME and then because I needxed to move the Consumer unit, I thought well I may as well upgrade to a metal one so hired an Electrician. Although not a rental property I asked him to do an EICR to check my wiring was upto scratch and the only thing he pulled me up on was i had forgotten to mark a switched live in a 2 way switch. Ended up having an argument with the wife for spending £1200 on something she knows I am competent to do but I wanted a professional to sign it off so money well spent in my mind. Sometimes wish I had retraded as an Electrician but cant afford the paycut now to train up lol
In Ontario, Canada, a homeowner/resident is allowed to do electrical work in their residence, but we have a third party permitting and inspection system, so regardless of who does the installation, it has to pass inspection.
If someone is doing work on a property they don't own/reside in, and particularly if they charge for work, they MUST be a qualified electrician.
While this still has potential downfalls, since the permitting authority has to be called in/informed, it means that the people who DIY (and there are always going to be people who do DIY, making it completely illegal just means there's no way to oversee that work) can have fully checked and certified properties.
I think this is a good compromise.

#1 reason to maintain the IP ratings on the boxes is to keep bugs snails rats and slugs out because by jove they WILL find the hole and they will HAPPILY go to their eternal rest across the live and blow up the fuseboard or set it on fire.

Top video as always Nick and Adam, sorry for being thick but how did you remove the tails when the main fuse was still in place or did that mess somehow have a double pole isolator?
I guess he has a good relationship with the DNO who allowed him to pull the fuse and arrange a visit.
At least there was an SWA to the shed, not a bit of flex buried in the garden.

What is a board at the end of the day? It's anenclosure with a bit of DIN rail, a hole of a particular size and some circuit breakers.
I've bought boards and not used any of the breakers, and equally I've put breakers in things that aren't "distribution boards" or "consumer units". If you're building a panel and you need circuit protection, you use appropriate breakers. If you need a convenient box with a cut out in the front for holding metering or a PLC, then often a small DB is the best way to go.
ABB used to make (they may still) a very handy bit of kit which was a window that you could cut in to the front door of a large enclosure and would give you a water resistant cover over a section of DIN rail. I used a lot of them mounting mini PLCs, with all the MCBs, contactors, drives, terminals, etc. mounted in the back of the case out of the way.
I know of one 'board' (I wont say where) that's just a box (not a consumer unit) with din rail in it. The cover has broken off but I was told it was ok because its in a locked cupboard. None of the wire colours has ever been correct - it looks like an old 3 phase cable had been used for single phase and not re-labelled. What really takes the mick is they spent more than I earn in a year having the whole building re-wired. Luckily the building is due for demolition soon.
Same place, I looked at some 32 amp C-form sockets where they were complaining about nuisance tripping. I took the sockets off (isolated of course) and the wires just fell out the back. Worse, all 4 32A sockets were fed from a single 32A breaker... No wonder it was tripping.
But what do I know - I just work in IT (with a background in stage lighting and electronics). I wonder if some of these people even understand how electricity works.

Playing devil's advocate for a bit, and I hasten to add I don't think what you're describing is good or correct, you could argue that as the requirement is that the enclosure must need a tool to open it and a key is a sort of tool, it meets the requirement. Much as some people put single insulated cable in a meter cabinet.
But if you're accessing that cupboard for non electrical use, like to read a meter or store tables, then I don't think that washes.
Equally having a bunch of 32A sockets off one breaker isn't dangerous though is potentially very annoying. Think about a 32A circuit with ten double outlets: you could draw 260A but taking diversity in to account you're unlikely to.
Maybe demolition is a blessing but seems a shame to rewire it just before doing so!

Nice one man! It's horrible how you two have to fix someone's mess and they proabbly robbed that old lady to do that botch of a job! Defo think serial numbers or some sort of accreditation checks done before consumer units are sold but there is always the Internet to get round that.

With the S/N on fuse boards, all that would happen is cowboy builders will just accumulate old units and swap them about. A better option would be to require a EICR before the sail of a property. This will allow DIYers to do what they do, and if it is wrong, that's on them.
But This will remove any DIY/cowboy shenanigans before a house is handed off, preventing legacy Bodge jobs from continuing when out of the hands of who made the mess. The last thing you want is more government restrictions involved. Especially in the UK where they are full blown nanny state, to the point that they will arrest you for a spicy tweet.
well nick , me personally think builders should not be allowed near electrics UNLESS have a qualified electrician with them and he is up to standard with his regs and can certify his work as safe.
It's why I do my electricity myself, at least I'm sure it's secure

If you're taking a board off, reterminating all the cables etc, what's the difference between that and fitting a replacement consumer unit... without getting into semantics. Wouldn't that constitute an EIC?

The issue with "only sparks can buy boards" is - what is a spark? I work in commercial - and likely have different qualifications to you - which weirdly seems far less regulated than Domestic. I routinely buy boards - but arguably couldnt fit one in Mrs Jones' house (despite playing woth 3 phase day in day out). Likewise my qualifications are different to my coworkers. If the route to being a spark was simplified this would then start becoming viable

A DIYer myself but agree about main fuse boards being 'owned' by trade. Need to have a foolproof one for DIY though for those small jobs like sheds etc. Would be more expensive with everything fitted already but that would put the cowboys off anyway.

It's an nice idea that only a competent person can buy a fuse board but it just won't work, I'm a gas engineer and they tried about 10 years ago that you could only buy boiler parts with a gas Safe card. Only a few places asked and that didn't last for a year.
It a shame that people think gas/electrical work is easy and you can do it without any training or knowledge.

The only thing that's going to happen if you seriously restrict the sales of electrical quipment is that DIYers and builders will switch to using stuff they found in the back of the shed, flex or even speaker cable instead of T&E etc..

And this is just because it's 'his' industry. Imagine if every industry demanded this.
Mechanics: "Brake calipers should be serial numbered"
Tree Surgeons: "Chainsaws should be licensed"
Kwikfit: "Tyres should not be sold to the general public"
Builders: "Bricks should require a license to purchase"
All these things if used incorrectly can endanger other peoples lives. Your brakes could fail you didn't torque the calipers on tight or maybe too tight, your tree could fall on the neighbours house, your home fitted tyre could be poorly fitted or backwards and cause a crash, your brick wall could fall on a small child.

You said it was TT, so you should have changed the main switch for an S type / time delayed RCD (no lower than 100mA, re selectivity) - see section 2.2.6 of the OSG for the explanation why. In essence, commendable as your efforts were, you've left it potentially dangerous.
The Earthing Conductor need only be 4mm2 on TT [see e.g. OSG, table 4.4(iii)]. 6mm2 MPB is perfectly fine - half the size of the EC, subject to 6mm2 minimum, 25mm2 maximum (544.1.1).
Being fed by overhead lines, no mention was made of installing type 1 (not type 2) SPD's, though she can of course decline them (if you do install them, better they're upstream of the RCDs, but will need to be installed with CT 2, as per appendix 16).

I was in the exact same situation today! A “mate” of the customers fitted the DB, he told him he was NAPIT registered but wasn’t. Turned out he was an electricians mate on site and not qualified to do any such work!!! The board was ruff and agin a BG split load probably from Screwfix. To make matters worse, the socket circuit (whole house) tripped the RCD which has been plait into to radials? Something i need to investigate and fix amongst many other things. I say it all the time “nothing surprises me anymore “ but then it does!!!! Totally with you on the fuse board accountability thing. Something needs to be done!!!

personally nothing mate, in my experience bg boards around my area are fitted poorly because they are a lot cheaper to but than other brands, normally brought and installed by builders around here
Our trade definitely needs more control. Your suggestion about boards makes sense especially around domestic. Sadly though I think it'd just push it all underground. You can buy literally anything if you know where to look. I've even seen second hand D.B's & MCB's being sold at car boot sales. Gas Safe as we know doesn't stop anyone off the street buying boiler parts and fitting them. It's a tricky one.

As for the serial numbers on the fuse boxes I really don't see that working. What happens when Joe homeowner gets a new panel and then in two years puts in something new or changes something and causes the house to burn down. Who's fault is it, would they come back to you? I understand the seals thing, but a burned down house it might not be there anyway to prove one way or another. There would be a black market for the panels out there, just buy one in another country and bring it into the UK for example that might not have regulations. Would be another law that could be side stepped. Unless you have inspections yearly to verify the seal is still intact etc, which would cost a lot of money and having to check every house each year in the country, there would be the whole EICR "drive by" certificates thing that happens now.
