Damn, Fiio is going back to the roots of portable audio. It's crazy how we've come a long way in the portable audio segment.
This is awesome and a must buy for me. I turn 65 in three weeks and have been involved in audio either professionally or as an enthusiast for over 45 yrs. so I have quite a collection just waiting for a portable device like the CP13. Thanks Dave. Excellent review.
I was quite the cassette enthusiast back in the 80s. I made hundreds of home tapes of LP and CD using metal and Cr02 cassettes making sure the tape head, pinch rollers, tape guides, etc, were clean, setting the perfect recording levels to get a best recording I could.
I’m sure you remember all the noise reduction technology that was used back then (Dolby B, C, dbx) which has different effects on reducing tape hiss but I could get pretty darn close to the quality of a CD or LP. I rarely bought pre-recorded tapes as their sound quality was pretty bad.
I may have to buy one just for nostalga sake.
Any chance they would make a minidisc player? That's what I need badly.
Access to a speed control potentiometer would be greatly valued on Version 2.0. Plus equalization option for Type II and Type IV tape formulations.
It has a speed setting accessible by screwdriver
Again a great review, Dave! Thank you!
Do you plan to review the Moondrop Discdream?
You would need a pencil or pen when going out to save battery lol! Remembering those days :)
I have been eyeing these on Hifigo and really want to dip my toes back into the cassette tape water but I only have maybe a handful left... all my old cassettes are either long gone or my parents may still have them. Either way, awesome review and it's so good to see cassettes coming back kinda 😃
Sorry Dave.. …Can not get on board what so ever with a portable cassette player.
I’m a child of the 80’s and I had about 3 of those cassette units… I would carry them in an Adidas bag with 20 cassettes everywhere I went.
Now … I carry a tiny MP3 with 1000 flac albums on it! Heaven!
Nostalgia aside, I could never go back!
Unfortunately I believe only one or two factory’s are making the actual tape mechanism and head. The mechanism is pretty cheap and doesn’t sound nearly as good as they used to. Fiio put a pretty nice package around it though.
Imagine the scenario. You are able to travel back in time and visit the teenage version of you who is walking down the street listening to a Sony Walkman. You tap them on the shoulder and you say:
"You see that plastic window on your Walkman"
"Yeah, what about it?"
"One day you'll be able to get a protector for it"
Not mentioning CD's, MP3 files, IPods or streaming!
I spent a lot of time as a kid making mix tapes in the 90s. I'd love to bring cassettes back into my life.
DJ's were the bane of middle school me's existence because I recorded off the radio with the boombox I bought at Caldor's with all the money saved up from birthday cards and allowance lol.
I would like a dongle DAC that looks like that cassette player's window instead.
You have to listen to these in Porta pros for the full experience
Yet another banger,
Shinji would be happy to have that 😆
Sorry to be that "guy", but he had a DAT player and not an analog cassette player. Nice HEXA video btw.
Fiio geting into the niche cassette market, nice!
Fiio is getting deep with this one
Would have liked a review evaluating how it performs as a cassette player. There are concrete methods for discerning the actual quality of the cassette mech. You did none of them in this video.
My issue with this product is it's using the same cheap cassette mechanism as every other new cassette player today, because it's literally the only mechanism still being made. You'll be much better off buying a vintage restored player.
Yes but it will often look like a dogs chew toy for $100-300 or need service lol
This is a big step forward to the future of new, better players. The frequency response is quite good for a new player, it can hit above it's rated specs, and FiiO has said they're going to invest in making better models in the future.
I'll admit I am more amenable to it now that Cassette Revival did a sound test. In fact, I ordered one.
@@LSDScreen I got mine today, great quality!
Im planning to buy one, how is noise and hiss? How audible is it?
Why are feelings so important? I -feel- that you are lying about facts😂
Now all they need to do is make a high quality CD player with quality materials, an amazing built in DAC, and a rechargeable battery with USB-C charging
Id also like to see what Techmoan thinks about this cassette player and get his views on this new player
No
Why bother? It's a digital format anyway, there's nothing cool about CDs.
@@rafsnchz I know there is nothing cool about CDs, but that doesn't change my view that I would enjoy a Modern CD player with the things I listed to enjoy my CD collection
Fiio will make a CD player,- release later this year. I am waiting to see if it will play SACDs…
A cassete player that doesn't have a DAC chip is absurd! 😉
🙄
🤔 ?
Guys, it probably was a sarcasm. 😅😆
@@rafsnchz hence the rolling eyes
Cassette ? Really 😳 ?
I think the mp3 players are far superior in terms of storage, replay, playlist etc
no way cassette tapes are state of the art!
Correct - this unit is all about the journey, not the destination. Like albums, people generally enjoy the physical experience. Opening a cassette tape and pushing it into a mechanism and pressing buttons...what's not to like? It's like cracking open a nut...it takes a little time and it's a bit clunky, but somehow the experience is worth the effort.
