@Jared Bradley I was more so praising the rhythm of the sentence, rather than the specific choice of language (other than the half-rhyme, which does lend itself to the rhythm) and whether it was conventional for the period. It feels that the sentence alone has an elegance and flair that is missing from a lot of game writing.
The writing in this game is really something. From the actual story to the random letters you can find around the world. Even minor characters have a story. R* really has some talented and creative minds

That waterfall stunt must have attracted a crowd so it's rather odd that they left Desiree just laying there after her death. And she should look less "fresh" by now.
It's totally possible the barrel got caught underneath the roaming falls and over time, Search efforts are established but you know... The late 19th century. They most likely gave up looking for her corpse or her barrel after a few days and by the time John or Arthur find the barrel, Search efforts are long gone and her cylindrical casket quietly floated ashore just a bit before Arthur comes.
TL;DR. IM OVerexplaining game goofs. It's all good here.

@@jurassicparkboy I don't want to give a detailed description of the process of putrefaction but if she spent a longer while in that barrel either A) her remains would be "sticking" inside that barrel or B) after an ever longer while all that would be left is a skeleton.
@@Davo It's not the kind of stunt you can rehearse unless trying a smaller waterfall first and she would always require help dragging that barrel around. Sitting in a closed barrel it would be difficult to push herself in the water.
There is no way you can make this plausible : the crowd would have gathered exactly where she washed ashore, an ideal viewpoint to see her descent. And she would have to look as that family who died from carbon monoxide poisoning or the 2 boys who starved locked up in their home. (RDR2 is such an uplifting, positive game)

I'm beginning to think the easter eggs were written to tie in with the main themes of the storyline. You know, knowing when to stop, like this lady dying of one last stunt, this actor dying of being too long "in the game", this ice skater having an accident, his past digging him out ... I think many of these stories can be seen from this angle.
How do you connect them with the story?

I think the ice skater actually lived there for a long time and trained to ice skate since his childhood. Because if my ice skater career ended because of an accident I wouldn't leave my ice skating shoes on top of my table just to remind me of the good old days.

Cool, I never saw that grave so I'll have to look around and see if I can find it when I play next. Also, Mary-Beths book she wrote that she *spoiler* gives John in the epilogue is definitely about Grimshaw and Dutch.
Also, on the sign for the Rhodes church (I think it’s Rhodes), it says the pastors last name is Grimshaw. Not sure if there’s a connection or not tho

With each new video i'm like "it's over, Strange man found and explained every hidden details in the game by now", and the next week you still find something new to tell us about. Both the game and you really impress me.
When I found the Nevada hat behind the waterfall I also found a complete map of the otis miller treasure. I dont think I found the letter there but I always go there to get the map.
I think the ice skater guy who's grave was desecrated was possibly his kid. When you showed the tomb, I saw it said "war verteran, father" so I assume the child desecrated his grave because he left them after knowing he could no longer ice skate. He held ice skating more dearly than his kid who cameback to write "No Ice in Hell" as a way of showing his resentment to the dad.
That or the father was so absorbed in his skating career that he never gave his son the time of day. Son stages an accident, figuring that he’d have no career so he’d be forced to spend time with him. Dad instead goes to live on a frozen lake by himself. Son disowns father, and when the father dies the son digs him up.

Me too...and that is really a shame. But, thank to Strange Man, I'm discovering a lot of things that I didn't know had such interesting background stories. I've always treated all of them only as Easter Eggs, and nothing more.

You know the first two weeks “4-6 hours playing each day” i stopped at chapter 2 and kept exploring! I was astonished and attached to the game
I mean I barely found out today you can get robbed in saint Denis at the gunstore some guy will bump into you and Rob you of 300+ dollars
I did the same! :D As soon as we went to Horseshoe Overlook I just dropped everything and went on to explore. I also studied ~90% of animals in chapter 2 :D Now I still have 2 species missing, one bull and something else. I just don't want to check it on the Internet. I want to get everything myself.

Me and my friend made a theory that the ice skater purposely caused a rival of his to ‘have an accident’ to make sure he wins. After his death, the rival defaced his grave to get the last laugh.
I'm a bit late here, but this makes perfect sense to me. If you look at the corpse, it seems like the pants are torn on the right foot. If he survived an accident like that a few years ago, he'd still wear normal pants and he might just fold the missing leg part like Mickey the war veteran does with his missing hand and his coat. So maybe this man's rival was the one that had the "accident" and when he heard of his rival's death, he went to deface the grave and took his revenge by cutting the corpse's leg off
But he was a war veteran, probably lost his leg in war.
The attention to detail in this game is second to none. I remember finding all these mysteries and just thinking this is just things the devs put in just for the sake of it. I love how it all has a back story. Brilliant.

With the missing leg and the apparent depression the ice skater felt, I can't help but think of real life Nancy Kerrigan. She was a proffessional ice skater who almost couldn't participate in the 1994 Winter Olympics when a friend of her rival nearly broke her leg before the Olympics. Don't worry though, she recovered and won Silver.
Maybe whoever defaced that grave was a rival who lost against him year prior? Maybe someone who lost against him while he lived, caused the accident in which he lost his leg, and then defaced the grave as an added insult.

"No ice in hell" : maybe he killed himself. No paradise for those who have committed suicide. The gravestone mentions "father" ... perhaps it was his family or a member of his family who was mad with rage at having been abandoned. After having found him, having noticed his death, in a burst of anger, the family member would have written this words...
No paradise for any other sort of sinner as well, which according to the bible, all of us are, especially those who think they aren't and that they're "not that bad"

I've found the Nevada hat(one of my favorites)and note. Never found the woman in the barrel in all my play thrus. Found the cabin and the ice skater. I've always wondered who desecrated his grave. Wife or child due to him being gone so much. Ice skating competitor because they believed he sold his soul to win. Or a veteran on his side or enemy from the war. Who knows who did this, not enough clues to figure out.
Maybe someone who thought a famous athlete would be buried with money. It’s not like Arthur won’t loot bodies.

As for who defaced Felix Hawley's grave, his body is missing his right leg, from his accident in 1874, and we can assume he was wealthy and famous enough to have a decent prosthetic leg made for himself in the years following his accident. Now who else in the game is missing his right leg? One is Hamish Sinclair, a fellow Union veteran who sports a fake leg nicer than any a normal Civil War vet would have, and who when we meet him has lost it in his horse's stirrup. Maybe Hawley served with Hamish in the army and for whatever reason was to blame for Hamish losing his leg, so when Hawley died years later (I think the stone says 1888) Hamish came by for his revenge, got a nice fake leg out of Hawley's grave, and still isn't totally proficient in its use by 1899 when Arthur comes by. Another possibility could be Joe Butler, the Confederate veteran hanging out at the Rhodes general store, who also lost a bunch of brothers in the war, and is also missing his right leg, though he does not have a prosthetic. Did he stop bitching about the Grays long enough to travel to the Grizzlies to avenge his dead brothers?

this could be a story about Valentine Bialas He qualified for the 1936 Olympic team as an alternate, but could not participate in those Olympics because he was injured in an auto/train collision which occurred in an icy downpour on the way home from a skating meet. He lost his leg in the collision.

I’m not sure what kind of horse she was, but I am pretty sure that the horseshoe that Arthur keeps next to the picture of his father, his dog, and him with Hosea and Dutch at his camp belonged to her.
Maybe it's the horse we see on the rdr2 trailer ?

Great video as usual Mr Strange Man. My one and only complaint is that it's pretty obvious that ice skater had lived in the cabin for a very long time. The cabin has a frozen lake wouldn't it make more sense that he skated on it rather than 'he moved here to painfully remind himself of the good ol' days', no one does that. I'm paraphrasing of course but you get the idea.
It really makes you want to know who dug him up and what the accident was, it's very interesting. Rockstar is phenomenal at painting just enough of a picture without spelling out the poetry in these stories, it really makes content of your videos great and makes the game feel alive.

If you ask me Rockstar made the barrel rider is a two in one reference to LOTR and Annie Edson Taylor because the ‘Mysterious Hill’ home or the “Hobbit House” is not too far from Donner falls and obviously the woman and the poster represents Annie Edson Taylor.

I found the ice skating one myself, I was just exploring the map and stumbled soon that cabin. I thought his accident was that his leg was cut off while he was skating but I’m not sure.
(Also, the difference between Arthur’s and John’s drawings is a nice detail, Arthur’s are better than Johns, the more detail he puts into it makes his drawing seem mature/older while John’s seem younger.)

What if Old Hamish, the sweet war veteran, was in the other side of this ice skater battlefild a long time ago? and they had some beef between them? And after hearing about his long time enemy death, he went up the mountain and got the leg for himeself and wrote "No Ice in Hell" on the grave. If you do a long-form video of the Civil War secrets in the game, it'd be cool. The Lemoine Raiders are just the tip of the iceberg in that department. There are also characters like Major Hobart Crawley (encountered in Saint Denis. He has a statue dedicated to him and those who served under his command in Rhodes), Joe Butler, Hayden Russell, and Hamish Sinclair. Events that could be covered are the Battle of Fort Brennand (with items left over at the site), the Battle at Scarlett Meadow (the Civil War battle, not the fight against the Lemoine Raiders), and the actions of General Quincy T. Harris (as well as everything surrounding this unseen character: his cigarette card, grave, the memorial hall named after him, newspaper clippings, his statue, and the NPC who says Harris who showed cowardice in the face of the enemy). There's also the corpse of a Corporal Garfield that can be found at the site of Scarlett Medow and the letters from his lover, Martha. This Martha is the same Martha who can be found in Martha's Swain in Ambarino. You could also throw in characters from the main story like Dutch's father being killed at Gettysburg or Henry Favour's dubious war record.

I think on the dead ice skater's tombstone it says "father" underneath the red painted message, so perhaps a scorned lover or an abandoned child he may have ditched when he went to live in the mountains after his accident, might have come back to vandalise his grave later on. or maybe a bitter skating rival or family member of a war victim (possibly from the opposing side) came to get revenge.

Given that the skater was a war veteran, maybe he killed someone in the war and that person’s family member swore vengeance. It would make sense as to why they think he’s in hell.

Got a video idea that I haven't seen anyone else touch: According to what I have read, you can find the cheats scattered in the world all across the map (the abandoned Native American site has one on the wall and the shipwreck on the very eastern tip of the map near Annesburg also has one) but those are the only two that I have been able to stumble across. A video listing out where all of them are located would be really cool. If you think that is a dumb idea then so be it, but keep being awesome regardless Strange Man!
Yeah they're scrawled into various drawers and even into the ice up in the mountains, there's lists of them already online though so I don't know if a video would be worth doing exactly, though I suppose knowing their locations would be a good excuse to explore again!

Maybe this is completely not relevant but maybe the story of the suicide note is linked to sheriff Malloy of Valentine since he is also wearing the Nevada hat and even changes the model to an older looking person during the rdr2 story.
Also don't forget about his relationship with his wife which might depress him.
